temporary deal to reopen the government and didn't rule out supporting it, even without money for the border wall. >> would you offer temporary spending without a wall? >> i wouldn't be happy with it, i wouldn't be happy. we have a lot of alternatives. >> even if it doesn't have wall money? >> i have other alternatives, if i have to. i'll use those, if i have to. we want to go through the system. we have to have a wall in this country. >> reporter: this is after the president backed down from the showdown with nancy pelosi over the state of the union address and the speaker's demand that the speech be delayed is, quote, reasonable. >> what she said is actually reasonable. we'll have the state of the union when the shutdown is over. >> when do you think that will be? >> that i can't tell you. that, i can't tell you. we have a lot of alternatives, but we need border security.

shrouded in uncertainty. opposition leader, juan, considers amnesty as well as embattled president, nicholas maduro. the u.s. ordered nonessential embassy workers to leave the country. other u.s. embassy staff aren't complying with the order to get out. >> reporter: the u.s. made clear the maduro regime does not have the authority to order american diplomats out of venezuela since the u.s. doesn't recognize maduro as president. the state department is ordering nonemergency employees to leave venezuela because of growing security concerns. this is amid escalating chaos in the night of looting and violence. despite the ordered departures, the u.s. embassy will remain open. martha radditz for abc news.

an arctic blast will continue to chill the region. this icy look is from interstate 29 in fargo, north dakota. in the midwest, an ice jam caused severe flooding near cleveland when it broke out. a dozen people had to be rescued from their homes. severe storms wiped out this home in central florida, near orlando. power lines and trees were knocked down on the radar here you can see skies clearing in the northeast. colder weather is coming in for the weekend. an investigation is under way in southern california into the death of a former prosurfer. authorities are confirming the body of 48-year-old chris brown washed up on a beach last weekend. he won several titles in the '90s. in recent years, he worked as a commercial fisherman, but known as a surfer. he leaves behind a wife and daughter. investigators cleared

embattled utility pg&e for the tubs fire. it was the second worst fire in the state's history. the 15-month investigation finds the homeowners private electrical systems sparked the flames that consumed 5700 square miles of california's wine country. the october 2017 fire killed two dozen people and the fire destroyed 5600 buildings. >> reporter: general mills is voluntarily recalling bags of gold medal unbleached flour because of salmonella concerns. specifically, the recall involves five-pound bags with a better if used by date of april 20, 2020. they discovered it during routine sampling. you can check our website for more details. a study finds sea air isn't the only thing cruise ship passengers are breathing on the water. johns hopkins found engine emissions from the vessels might be harmful to "your health." mo

guilty and pay fines to get the case over. the state department says it is providing assistance. back here at home, families have been forced out of an apartment complex in orange county, california by a giant sinkhole. >> it opened up in a courtyard between two buildings, stretching nearly 100 feet long. this morning, this might be something worse. we have the latest. >> reporter: authorities are investigating what caused this hole in an apartment complex in orange county, california. >> a shocker to me. >>like an earthquake. that's what i thought it was, but nothing was shaking. >> reporter: instead, the ground collapsed, crumbling the sidewalk and toppling trees. >> i have never seen anything like that. >> reporter: they diagnosed the problem. they believe a concrete box that transports water collapsed. crews are chopping down the trees behind me. several condos under voluntary evacuation.

the league, but josh and i were the first same-sex marriage in the nfl. it's a landmark they knew was coming at some point. >> jf waknn r his fearlessness on the field during his rough and tumble years as a linebacker for the cowboys and even making it on the cover of "dallas cowboys weekly." jeff says, along the way, he dated a lot of women, all while ignoring his sexual orientation. what was your first inkling you were different? >> i mean, people are born gay. i mean, that's just the way it is. i always managed it and i didn't practice it so it was not something that i knew enough about to say, hey, i'm gay. >> reporter: so he lived a life he thought was expected of him. during those years, did it ever occur to you he could be gay? >> not at all. >> reporter: it was only a few years ago, in his early 50s when jeff truly began to face his sexuality. >> when jeff and i met he never had been in a public space with a man, and he did not have gay friends and he was not going to gay bars or gay clubs. >> we met randomly at a

restaurant in west hollywood. josh was sitting close and we started talking and 2 1/2 years later here we are, we are married. >> reporter: since his wedding, jeff says the response has been overwhelming. >> i have heard from a lot of my dallas teammates. i have heard from a lot of my yale teammates. >> reporter: you expected polite silence? >> i was scared. there were nights i would cry myself to sleep. it was horrible. they don't want to tell people they are gay. my lesson is that it's okay, it's not easy but once you do it you will be a lot happier. >> jeff played for the dallas cowboys for seven years and his husband, josh, is an esthetician. a friend of the stars. his clients are on "real housewives of beverly hills." >> great report there from juju. it's tough to talk about this. he was so open about it. amazing to watch. >> amazing, modern family. the mix is next. amazing, modern family. the mix is next.
