before it was too late. and now, her parents are opening up in an exclusive interview. was lauren's death preventable? >> yes. >> absolutely. >> reporter: this morning the grieving parents of lauren mccluskey are opening up for the first time since their daughter was killed on the university of utah campus by a man she dated for just one month. >> she was so excited about having a career, about, you know, having a family in the future. and, we won't get to see any of that or experience any of that. >> reporter: in october the 21-year-old track star broke up with this man, melvin rowland, after discovering he was a registered sex offender on parole, who lied about his age and identity. after the breakup the 37-year-old began harassing her through e-mail and text. mccluskey feeling threatened first contacted university of utah campus police on october 12th. >> university police and security, how can i help you? >> hi, this is lauren.

i called a little -- a few days ago about a situation. and i wanted to kind of give an update. >> reporter: the college senior calling authorities on campus and at the salt lake city police department over the course of ten days. >> i'm worried because i've been working with the campus police at the u. and last saturday i reported and i haven't gotten an update. >> one thing she did tell me is that she said, it feels like i'm bothering them because she was calling so much. and then i remember telling her, it's their job to listen to you, you know, if you're complaining about -- >> but they weren't listening. >> they weren't. they weren't. they weren't taking her seriously. >> reporter: then, on the evening of october 22nd tragedy struck. can you tell me? can you walk me through what happened? >> i was on the phone with her as she was coming home from class. and then, all of a sudden, she yells, no, no, no. and then the line was still

open. and then matt called 911. >> she was abducted while we were talking to her on the telephone so we heard her being assaulted. >> reporter: at that moment police say rowland grabbed mccluskey, pulled her into a car and shot her. rowland later took his own life. so this is laurp's room? at their home in washington state lauren's track medals still hang on the wall. the mccluskeys now say the university of utah failed their daughter. >> they should have investigated. they would have very quickly found his parole status and one call and we wouldn't be sitting here today. >> reporter: shortly after her death, the university of utah's president releasing an independent review of the case and announcing actions to improve campus safety. >> the report does not offer any reason to believe that this tragedy could have been prevented. >> the university president said that there was nothing that could have been done to prevent lauren's death. i just had a sick stomach for days after that. >> reporter: in a statement to

abc news, the university says they grieve lauren's loss and that their report, quote, identified areas of deficiency in the university's systems and processes and made 30 recommendations for ways to improve them. the university is acting immediately to correct the deficiencies. >> if that's true, if there was no way, then why are all of these reforms being implemented, these changes? it would be pointless. >> reporter: when asked about this directly, theniversity again acknowledged serious mistakes were found and is now working to correct them. this as the mccluskeys start a new foundation in lauren's honor hoping to improve campus safety and celebrate their daughter's life. are you angry? >> mostly sad. >> you know, the sadness is so complete, i don't have room for anger. >> but we do want change. >> reporter: the university of utah says they are increasing training for officers and hiring a victim advocate who will work

his diagnosis and getting right back into the pool. victor oquendo is here with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. nathan adrian says like the 100-meter freestyle life can come at you fast. but now he's turning his battle with cancer into a lesson for others. olympic swimmer nathan adrian is known for racking up medals in the pool. >> and nathan adrian now, putting a show on. >> reporter: now he's embarking on the challenge of a lifetime out of the water. the five-time gold medallist sharing these snaps from his hospital bed on instagram, announcing that he's battling testicular cancer, writing recently i went to the doctor as something didn't seem quite right. after a few tests and visits with the specialist, i unfortunately learned that i have testicular cancer. but the 30-year-old is in good spirits and says thanks to early detection his future is bright, telling his fans he plans to compete in 2020. i have already started treatment and the prognosis is good. i will be back in the water in a few short weeks with my sights fully set on tokyo. now he hopes to share his journey to help break the stigma of discussing men's health

former campaign aide, has been arrested in florida, charged by special counsel robert mueller with obstruction, witness tampering, making false statements to congress, all connected to what he knew about the hacking of hillary clinton's e-mails during the 2016 campaign. and what he told the trump campaign about those leaks. let's go back to pierre thomas for all the later. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. stone is charged with obstruction of an official proceeding and five counts of making false statements and one of witness tampering. george, this is all about wikileaks which obtained hacked information about the dnc and clinton campaign chairman john podesta and then released the documents during the 2016 campaign. the u.s. intelligence community concluded that the documents, which had embarrassing information about clinton, was hacked by the russian government in an effort to help the trump campaign. according to charges, in the summer of 2016 stone spoke to senior trump campaign officials about wikileaks and the damaging information it had on clinton. the special counsel alleges that senior trump campaign officials

in this case, it's alcoholism. and it has a treatment. and by the way, rigorous hone honesty, which is what he's doing here, is a key ingredient in his sustained sobriety. >> but all parents struggle with how much honesty is good for children at what age. you know, how much information should you pass over. >> right, george, two issues here.can begin talking to them, as soon as they can understand in your opinion and don't want to force the information down their throat but where is dad going in the evening? he goes to these meetings. you don't them to seem secret. or peculiar. he has a condition. it's associated with some behaviors and for him to stay well he goes to these meetings and all the kids want to know is that dad is okay. now, in terms of how honest to be, george, there is a wrinkle here. if you are not an alcoholic, an addict, and want your kids to be abstinent, to have zero tolerance as your goal do not talk to your kids about what you did or did not do in high school or college, but never be dishonest to your kids.

it's just you don't have to answer every question. you just say look -- >> announcer: this is an abc news special report. now reporting, george stephanopoulos. >> good morning. we are coming on the air now with breaking news in the russia investigation. the president's long-time political adviser, roger stone, has been charged this morning by special counsel robert mueller. seven counts of witness tampering, false statements and obstructions of proceedings. he has just appeared in aurfo,0 arraigned in d.c. next week. that's the scene in home in florida where fbi agents showed up around 6:00 a.m., went in to arrest roger stone, took materials from that apartment, also his homes in harlem, new york. again, another indictment here in the russia investigation. seven counts of false statements and witness tampering. i want to go straight to our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. >> reporter: george, this is

about roger stone reaching out to wikileaks trying to get information allegedly hacked by the russians. the other key is that he apparently kept some senior campaign officials aware of his efforts regarding wikileaks and they wanted regular updates which he allegedly provided. but there's no allegation of collusion where stone or any of these campaign officials are accused of directly working with the russians but this could be the first hint that the russia investigation is nearing its conclusion, ge>>no fm previous indictments by mr. mueller that he believed that wikileaks was getting information from russian intelligence but there's no allegation here that roger stone communicated directly with russian intelligence. >> reporter: that's correct, george. the key here is that everyone suspected based on the stories that had been published in the summer of 2016 that these documents that wikileaks was putting out -- they put out some right before the democratic convention as you'll recall. people suspected that the russians were responsible for that hack. now the allegation here is that roger stone sought to get more and more information from

wikileaks and then when he heard that there were congressional investigations, hat tthat the fs looking into it, he sought to cover his trail. that's what the special counsel is alleging. >> and that he had communications with multiple officials on the trump campaign. i want to bring in dan abrams for more on this. one of the things that pops out of the indictment is the communication supposedly after the first release of wikileaks documents july 22, 2016 where mueller writes that a senior trump campaign official was directed to contact stone about any additional releases and what other damaging information organization one had regarding the clinton campaign. stone thereafter told the trump campaign about potential future releases of damaging material by organization one. one of the key questions that raises, who's the senior trump campaign official? who directed that person? >> right. and that's now the discussion about the trump campaign. let's be clear, trump campaign is mentioned 28 times in this indictment so there's no way to talk about this indictment and

ignore the reality that the trump campaign is mentioned numerous times here. and when talking about who directed it, i mean, that's the big question. who ordered him? who directed him? and i will promise you that mueller has an answer to that question. he's just not answering it in the context of this indictment. so that and it's important to note, george, there are two sets of releases here, right? you've got the release of the dnc documents which were hacked, but then the question becomes, all right, what's going to happen next here? ultimately the documents with regard to john podesta were released in october but now we have to ask what exactly did the trump campaign know, for example, about the podesta documents before they were released. and i think the fact that roger stone is talking to the trump campaign throughout this process becomes a critical point to look

at moving forward about the possibility that the trump campaign was aware of not just the dnc which was public but specifically that any information about the podesta e-mails that wasn't public. >> dan, the other question that could flow from that as well, did these other trump campaign officials, multiple campaign officials, tell the truth about their dealings either to the congress or the special counsel. >> correct. so you have at least two different trump officials mentioned here, specifically i think there's sort of references to more here, and most or all of them were probably questioned by the special counsel. it's now clear from this that the special counsel has answers to a lot of things that we are still asking questions about, and we'll have to see did they tell the truth in the context of that questioning because that

could be potential problems for other folks specifically in the trump campaign. >> dan, we are getting our first response from the president himself from his lawyers, from others in the white house. i want to go for that to terry moran at the white house. the first tweet just moments ago from the president. >> reporter: an angry tweet, george. greatest witch hunt in the history of our country, the president tweeted out just moments ago. no collusion. that's in all capitals with an exclamation point. border coyotes, drug traffickers are treated better. who alerted cnn to be there, referencing the cnn camera crew that was on the scene when the raid went down. they said they were watching grand jury activity and knew something was up. here at the white house, nothing to see here. that's what press secretary sarah sanders told cnn this morning. she said this has nothing to do with the president, certainly nothing to doas omhing that affects tone us here in this building. when asked directly, does she

know? she was on the campaign. who on the campaign told roger stone according to this indictment, go check with wikileaks, see what other kinds of e-mails they might be getting from the russians, she did not answer directly but she said there was no collusion, that this is all a witch hunt. so she did not answer that question directly. she said that's a legal document. i haven't read it yet. but she emphasized what the president has, nothing to see here, no collusion, whatever this most recent close associate of the president is indicted for has nothing to do with the president or the white house. that's the line here. >> that's the line there. we're hearing from democrats on capitol hill that they believe that there's more to investigate here. i want to go to tom llamas, our senior national correspondent there at the courthouse in ft. lauderdale. i take it, tom, that roger stone now getting processed to be able to be released at least for today. >> reporter: that's right, george. it was quite a striking scene inside of that courtroom. i'll take you inside. it was a tiny federal courtroom here at the broward federal courthouse.

there wasn't a single seat that somebody wasn't sitting in, everyone looking at roger stone. if you've seen roger stone you know he's a dapper person, his hair combed perfectly. he looked disheveled in handcuffs. the only thing he said in court was, thank you, i understand, your honor. he will have to undergo a drug test and once he passes he will not have to be drug tested again. as you mentioned, there was a $250,000 bond but he's going to be released without putting money down. he just can't miss any court tes. a restrictions. he can only travel here to the southern district of florida, to the southern district of new york and d.c. he's going to go straight to d.c. he'll be moved there. that's where his next hearing will be. but quite a scene also right here outside the courthouse, george. i'm going to take you around. we're waiting for roger stone to come out. he possibly could speak. there are dozens of reporters here but there are also

protestors, spoupporters that he been fighting with each other a little bit, arguing about donald trump, russian collusion and other allegation and other roger stone confidante are here to show support. i did not see close members of his family, and/or his wife in the courtroom. we'll see what happens once he leaves, george. >> tom, thanks very much. i want to bring in chris christie, former republican governor of new jersey and long-time friend of trump. we heard, chris, the president's response right there but now with this indictment we now have six, six associates of president trump who have been cited by robert mueller, the southern district of new york for lying or false statements, including his former national security adviser, michael flynn, michael cohen, paul manafort, robert gates, roger stone and george papadopoulos. you see the president surrounded by people who for whatever reason have not been telling the truth either to congress or to

robert mueller. >> that's obvious and i think as a former u.s. attorney, george, when i read this indictment this morning it once again proved out just how smart and careful robert mueller is being. he has roger stone, according to this indictment, dead to rights on the perjury charges. and listen, the other thing in here, and dan mentioned this as well, this has got to be a very disturbing day for some senior members of the trump campaign because, for those folks to now be in this indictment, referenced in this indictment, as having given any kind of direction to roger stone, it opens up a whole new avenue of inquiry that i'm sure mueller has already done, and i think one of the things that people always discount is the prosecutor almost always knows more than you do. when they went and sat with the special counsel, i think the other thing they've all got to be concerned about is whether they're going to be facing charges on false statements to the prosecutors as well,
