>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> we can't be more thankful as a, as a community here. >> tonight san francisco giants fans are remembering the man that helped keep the team in town and got them a new ballpark. peter mcgowan, former giants managing general partner for 15 years has died. good evening, thanks for joining us. i've eric thomas.>> iansco's cit up giants orange tonight in honor of mcgowan. mayor london breed did that saying she is joining giants fans in honoring him. >> abc7 news kate larson joins us from the ballpark that mcgowan helped to build. there's lets of reaction tonight. >> reporter: absolutely. and not only did peter mcgowan

help keep the giants here in san francisco, he helped create a winning team. he signed barry bonds back in 1993 to a huge contract and then he went on to high the leaders who took the giants to three world series championships. he's also known for sitting with the fans right behind the giants dugout. growing up in manhattan, his favorite team was new york giants. years later in 1992, mcgowan, current ceo and group of investors had a chance to buy the san francisco giants and keep them from moving to florida. >> peter's never say die attitude was instrumental in keeping the giants in san francisco. otherwise, here we are in 2019. we'd be watching the tampa bay giants. >> reporter: bayer spoke to us by phone after his gaethje us battle with cancer. he called him a close friend and mentor and reflected on his pioneering personality that led him to find private funding for

the new stadium that opened in 2000 originally called bac bell park. >> some are liked, some are disliked, peter was a loved donor. >> i'm just heartbroken. what a prince. >> reporter: it's not hard to find a giants fan who isn't grateful for mcgowan keeping baseball in san francisco. >> he was such an extraordinary influence on the city and for any of us who cared about baseball. >> he was the kind of owner that cared about the team and cared built fans and loved the sport. come to ownerships. >> reporter: larry hayes is the giants tour guide at the newly renamed oracle park and credits him for ushering in the new team. >> where we are standing now would be dilapidated warehouses peistence, the lovf cgowan, lary bear, and the entire giants ownership group brought to this project.

>> reporter: actually just this past week, the giants announced that mcgowan would be inducted into their wall of fame during their fan fest event. larry bayer tells me because of mcgowan's passing, they will probably postpone that ceremony. mcgowan is survived by his wife, five children and 12 grandchildren. kate larson, abc7 news. >> kate, thank you very much. taking a last look at city hall. funeral services for peter mcgowan will be private. the giants say in lieu of flowers donations can be 345id to the peter mcgowan field for kids pro fund. and we'll be sure to keep you posted as the giants reveal more details about that wall of fame ceremony. >> well, senator kamala harris officially launched her presidential campaign today. oakland police say 20,000 people attended a rally in her hometown of oakland. >> harris outlined her policies and wasted no time critiquing those of president trump, including his immigration

[ cheers and applause ] to $500 a month to help america's families make ends meet. >> abc7 news reporter katie yudis is live in the newsroom with what political experts and the people are saying about the bay area candidate after today. katie? >> reporter: eric, with nearly or more than 20,000 people in attend anxious, there's clearly a lot of local excitement for her, but political experts say it's too early to say who will pull ahead as a democratic nominee. senator harris has things going both for and against her.

>> in my whole life, i've only had one client, the people. >> reporter: from prosecutor to presidential candidate. >> the fight for justice is everyone's responsibility. >> reporter: democrat kamala harris has represented california as a u.s. senator for the last two years. >> she may have less experience than some of them, but i think the current president and his predecessor showed us that voters don't necessarily need a huge amount of experience in government. >> i've been following her since she was attorney of san francisco. >> reporter: following seven years as s.f. district attorney, she served as california attorney general for six years under governor jerry brown. >> so, we went after the five biggest banks in the united states. we won $20 billion for california homeowners. >> reporter: in national politics she's made a splash during senate hearings with her prosecutorial style of questioning. >> when i heard jeff sessions, you know, you scare me, you know. well, it's not about being scared. she's holding them accountable and that's what we want.

abc7news.com/politics. >> after a hazy sunday, spare the air alert goes into effect tomorrow. >> abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma is here with details. drew? >> eric and deon, over the next 24 hours, our air quality will be declining thanks to our stagnant weather pattern we've been under several days. our air quality will be poorest in the north bay over the next 24 hours. elsewhere, from the coast to the inland eastbound and the south bay, we'll have moderate air quality. so it's for that fact the spare the air day is in effect tomorrow. that means it's no wood burning. that's illegal the next 24 hours. so what to expect under these air quality issues tomorrow? you'll notice haze in our atmosphere especially in the afternoon, that's when we'll find the worst air quality during that time of the day. so it's a good idea if you have respiratory issues, you do want to limit your time-out doors. the good news, this poor air quality will not last all that long. rain returns to the forecast this week. we're going to detail that when i see you for the full

accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> we'll see you then, drew. police are investigating an attack on a muni bus in san francisco. video shows a man in an ambulance with a gash on his head. the attack happened around 8:00 tonight on the 8 bay shoreline while the bus was near 5th and howard. we reached out to both s.f.p.d. and muni for more information. >> oakland police arrested a woman for a hit and run crash that critically injured a teenage boy. the accused driver faces charges and police say she was on probation for a similar crime. abc7 news reporter laura anthony salt do sat down with the boy's family. >> reporter: the woman shown in this cell phone video who allegedly ran over a teenager with her car and left the scene is now behind bars in alameda county. 36-year-old leah is now facing multiple felonies for the january 2nd hit and run that left 14-year-old carlos prieto iii severely injured. the boy was riding his bike in

the fruitvale district when a car driven by connor struck him and dragged him several blocks. the allegations include assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. connor was already on probation after her conviction three months ago for felony dui with injury. and evading police related to an incident in sonoma county in march of 2017. >> he undergoes a lot of surgeries about every other day. >> reporter: the boy's grandfather was among dozens of people who gathered at the fruitvale bike ride and fund-raiser to help the family. >> he's a fighter. he's a strong individual mentally, physically. he's going to pull out of this with the help of god. >> he's holding in there. he's fighting, staying strong. so that's all we can pray for. >> reporter: the riders ended up on macarthur boulevard where vendors and local artists set up booths to help raise money while carlos continues to recover, connor is set to be arraigned on tuesday morning.

surf rider foundation led its monthly clean up effort today. several nonprofits will count which company's products were found on baker beach. volunteers know they will always find one item that people discard at the beach. >> cigarette butts are a real big deal because they're the number one source of pollution at our beaches and our cities, everywhere all over the world. every year in the bay area alone, 3 billion bucks are lit erred. >> the surf rider foundation also leads to clean up events in san francisco's ocean beach each month. >> in the south bay, after nearly 73 years of san jose radio station is set to go off the air at 11:59 tonight. kliv a.m. has been broadcasting since 1946 when it began as kfm. they changed to kliv in 1906 during an ownership change. it has forecast a myriad of formats, mostly country, media

partner mercury news said they are considering donating the station to the city of san jose which will allow it to go back on the air. a five-time olympics swimmer adrian nathan is expected to go under surgery after he revealed he's battling testicular cancer. he shared photos from his hospital bed. his wife also shared a post saying, they hope the surgery will be the cure. it appears he is being treated at an oakland 4079 and he's optimistic about his diagnosis and getting back in the pool to continue training for the 2020 tokyo games. >> a's 911 dispatcher is being praised for taking the time to help a young caller who had a math emergency. >> 911. >> i had a really bad day and, um, i just -- i don't know. i just have tons of homework. >> oh, okay. what subjects do you have homework in? >> math. >> what's so difficult?

dry in the next 24 hours. the picture east bay hills, great visibility from this vantage point. it's a really quiet night out there. tomorrow the highlight is going to be the air quality, moderate to poor across the roegion. it's a spare the air day. a mild afternoon. we're back in the 60s, if not near 70s in our warm est cities to start out the week. cooler, much more winter-like air will begin to filter in here wednesday and thursday and that's ahead of our best chance for rain. that looks like friday. we could see some widespread showers across the bay area. so looks like our storm door may begin to open once again. live doppler 7 along with satellite tonight, though, high pressure is firmly in control over california. you can either thank or blame it for the warm weekend that was upon us. this is not moving over the next 24 hours. that's why we're expecting another mild day tomorrow as well. but underneath high pressure in the wintertime, what you have is

agely sinking air. and that acts like a lid in our atmosphere and unfortunately it trapped pollutants in our atmosphere right at the surface. that's the reason why we are going to see that poor air quality in spots tomorrow. the reason why we have that spare the air day in effect as well. it also causing a mild night out there. these numbers are still in the 50s in a lot of cities right now. not typical of late january numbers for this time of night. 56 in san francisco right now. we're holding at 57 in fremont. 54 in concord. one of our coldest spots now, santa rosa, only at 49 degrees. overnight tonight, it's another mild winter night. most spots will drop into the 40s over the next 12 hours. under mixture of stars and clouds. so, the 12-hour day planner on your monday, if you like the weekend, temperature wise it's pretty similar. we'll start with sunrise at 7:16 in the morning. then through the afternoon it's a mild afternoon, but again, you're going to notice that haze in our atmosphere thanks to the spare the air day in effect. so we will have that poor air

quality in spots and temperatures going to the 60s in most cities. highs on your monday, it's a mild 68 in concord to start out the week. 64 in the city. 65 in san jose, about 65 in fremont. santa rosa up to about 67 degrees, even half moon bay along the coast, you're mild at 65. what will begin to usher in that cooler air on wednesday is a weak ripple of energy. future ripple showing you by wednesday night as it skirts along the coast line, we could have a little bit of spotty drizzle, but a much better chance of widespread rainfall will come on friday. future weather, it looks like we'll have some steady light showers to kind of finish out the workweek ahead. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. put it all together for you, tomorrow all about that poor air quality in spots. it's a mild start to the week. mild weather continues tuesday. there we go on wednesday. some cooler air moves in. there's that slight chance along the coast of a sprinkle. but a better bet comes on friday with light rain. next weekend, guys, much cooler than this weekend. to round out on sunday, could have some more showers in the picture. a lot of changes the next seven

threatening to shutdown the government again in three weeks, or even declare a national emergency if he doesn't get $5.7 billion for the border wall. daria albinger, abc. >> national parks and spaces are reopening now that funding has been restored. only drake speech road remains closed at port reyes sea shore. in washington the smithsonian museum ands national zoo will reopen on tuesday. visitors to any of those sites should check dhr website for the latest information on opening schedules. >> famed news anchor tom brokaw is apologizing for comments he made on nbc's "meet the press" this morning that many are calling offensive. the comments about hispanics came during a discussion about the proposed border wall. >> i also happen to believe that the hispanics should work harder at assimilation. that's one of the things i've been saying for a long time. they ought not to be codified in their communities, but make sure that all of their kids are learning to speak english and that they feel comfortable in

the communities. and that's going to take outreach on both sides frankly. >> in a series of tweets tonight, brokaw apologized and said he feels terrible he offended people. >> huntington beach is fighting back against the state creating dueling lawsuits about home building in california. huntington beach is a wealthy community southeast of los angeles. last week governor newsome's administration announced it's suing the city, saying it is deliberately blocking affordable housing which is against state law. now huntington beach is suing the state to overturn a different housing law. this law accelerates approving housing projects if they offer affordable housing and meet other conditions. the lawsuit says the law is an overreach into city matters. state senator scott weiner from san francisco wrote that law. he says the lack of housing in california means the state needs to set standards. >> tonight sag awards brought wins to oakland-based artists the 91st academy awards less than a month away.

ali born in oakland and raised in hayward won best supporting actor for green book. "black panther" also gained momentum tonight winning outstanding performance by a cast in the major motion picture. the film was directed by oakland native ryan coogler who said he wanted to make a film encouraging kids to be proud of their african heritage. the sentiment was shared by the movie's leading actor chadwick boseman. >> we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world, that we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing. >> it is so well said. boseman also called coogler a genius, saying it was an honor to work with him every day. now, they could even reel in more awards. the oscars will be held on sunday, february 24th, and abc7 is the only place you can watch the oscars. >> still ahead on abc7 news at 11:00, thieves on social media trying to steal the identity of

from her instagram page including fake accounts with them. >> they're trying to scam people by saying that this is their daughter and she is ill and they need money for treatment. it's a pretty sickening feeling to see that as a parent. >> talk about low. at one point the user behind a fake account said they would only stop if the tisdale family paid them $30,000. instagram says it keeps disabling accounts but recommends people keep their accounts private for protection. >> an oakland woman walked away from shark tank with a deal, but not without some difficulty. we introduced you to zara on a midday live program on friday. she brings the montessori method of learning to kids under the age of 3. the sharks raised eyebrows along the way, not seeing the novelty of her program and frustrated with her negotiating. she ended up walking away with a deal with star kevin o'leary
