now from abc7, live breaking news. >> before it's over. >> that will breaking news is chaos erupting after oakland unified school district voted to close a school. good evening. i'm ama daetz. emotions ran high all night as parents, teachers and students fought to save their middle school. cornell bernard is live in oakland where a vote happened minutes ago. cornell? >> reporter: the board just voted 6-1 to close an east oakland middle school. parents, teachers and students very upset about there tonight. oakland teachers are getting ready to vote on a possible strike. >> keep cuss open >> reporter: protesters brought the school board meeting to a

halt. board members forced to leave the stage. >> we oppose any school closures. we will not be con quered these parents, students and teachers fighting to save roots international academy from possible closure. >> you all want to shut us down. at the end of the day, we're still a family and going to remain strong >> reporter: the district says roots academy has poor test scores and only 266 students. >> roots is a quality school and i'm telling you this despite what you say >> reporter: union reps met monday to begin the process of a strike vote for teachers. teachers could be on the picket line s as early as next month. their demands have not changed. >> our students have had smaller class size is, increased investment in student support, such as kerls, nurses librarian. >> reporter: the union wants a 12% salary increase over three years but the district says it's growing deficit won't allow

stop this now >> reporter: commission members unanimously approved the utility's plans to secure new loans and obtain credit. that speeds up the process of declaring chapter 11 bankruptcy. pg&e we vealed its plans to do so earlier this month. the utility says it's facing at least $30 billion in liability following several deadly wildfires. new at 11:00, democratic presidential hopeful kamala harris touted the power of truth and unity during a town hall meeting with voters in iowa. >> enough with powerful forces trying to sow hate and division among us. that is reflective of who we are as americans. >> harris spoke about her support of medicare for all, new gun safety measures and opposition to the death penalty and addressed a question about critics who think a man would make a better nominee. >> in my entire career, i've heard people say when i ran and ran as the first woman who would win it's not people aren't ready. it's not your time.

san francisco's hyde street pier when it reopened today. some ships are still off-limits till they can be inspected for damage caused by storms a few weeks ago. police are investigating the attack of a san francisco man on his way to work near fisherman's wharf on beach street between clom bus and hyde saturday night. news reporter kate larsson joins us live with what happened. kate? >> reporter: well, ama, i have seen surveillance which shows a group of men running down the sidewalk ramp on beach street supposedly chasing the victim. sfpd asked me mot to reveal that surveillance for fear it might compromise their investigation which they say is still very much ongoing. police say a 32-year-old san francisco man was on his way to work at the argue go naught hotel saturday night when he was attacked on beach street near a backdoor to the hotel. >> again, victim not moving. blood is everywhere. suspect group of five or six

males >> reporter: police say the suspects punched, kicked and threw the victim against this brick wall. when help arrived, he was lying here on the ground with serious head wounds, slipping in and out of consciousness 37 but he was able to tell officers what happened. >> the male stated that he was walking to work and he noticed six males on the street. as he passed those males he noticed they were following him. moments later, he was attacked from behind and his backpack was stolen. >> the person who was attacked i hope he's okay >> reporter: sara sosoatu works at sees candy 20 yards from the scene. suspects were seen hanging out in front of the candy store before the attack when the store was already closed. >> it's terrifying especially a group of people sitting and waiting to do something. >> i'm not surprised. this area always has a lot of crazy peoples >> reporter: mabel also works here and says she gets straight into an uber or lyft after work

at night. >> when it's dark, we don't really walk around >> reporter: now, i have been in touch with san francisco general hospital where the victim is still being treated. sfpd says he has very serious injuries but fortunately has been improving. live at fisherman's wharf, kate larsson. >> hank you so much. in developing news, four houston police officers are in who the lopt after being wounded during a shoot-out the governor described as horrific. they faced gunfire serving a search warrant at a home. police shot and killed two suspects who fired. two of the four wounded officers are in critical condition. a fifth suffered a knee injury. the police chief says black tar heroin was being sold from the home the officers raided. millions of americans are dealing with extreme little cold weather tonight. forecasters can warn temperatures could soon plunge to you 30 below zero. in wisconsin, drivers spent part

a woman in the south bay says she was targeted for having an invisible disability and says she parked in a handicapped spot with a visible placard. when she returned to her car, it was covered in dog feces. manny has our story from san jose >> reporter: shellie nichol chandar says dirty looks come with her handicapped placard. she parked while showing a home to new clients. >> went in for about ten minutes. when we came out, there was just poop all over my car >> reporter: we blurred the feces but she documented the display on facebook. >> they decided to atmosphere dog feces all over my car. >> this was so violent and so cr s celo at just felt like i needed to do it in hopes that the person would actually see the video and feel kind of poopy

"black panther" is coming back to theaters. disney the parent company of abc7 announced today the film will play for free february 1st through the 7th at 250amc theaters nationwide. it's all to celebrate black history month. disney says it's also giving a $1.5 million grant to the united negro college fund. it was directeded by oakland born ryan koogler, nominated for six oscars including best picture. >> abc7 is the only place you can watch the oscars. they'll be handed out sunday, february 24th at 5:00 p.m. all right. time to turn to sports. mindi bach is here tonight.
