now, to the arctic weather bringing the coldest temperatures to the middle of the country. here's the radar, across the great lakes and the northeast. behind it, life-threatening cold. >> people digging out their cars in milwaukee can look forward to single digit or negative temperatures all day today. schools there are closed. they are also closed today and tomorrow in minneapolis. >> airports were clearing runways every half hour. more than a thousand flights were cancelled at chicago's two airports. our brave and incredible correspondent there on the ground abc's alex perez is in the very cold windy city. >> reporter: the deep freeze and all the problems that come along with it already moving into the mid-west, this region bracing for temperatures that could feel like 50-to-60 degrees below zero the next few days. the snowy, icy conditions created countless problems, crashes, spinouts. drivers are struggling to stay

on roadways. in minnesota, more than 130 crashes in ten hours. snowplows fighting strong winds as they tried to clear roads and highways. police in chicago sunday rescuing a man who jumped into an icy lake michigan to save his dog and became trapped. at chicago's airports, more than 1,100 flights already cancelled. many school districts across the mid-west will be closed until at least thursday. and authorities are warning people to stay inside, if possible, with the temperatures this cold, it takes as little as five minutes for frostbite to begin on exposed skin. alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> unbelievable shock there with alex in the snow just coming down. you know, it's freezing. >> i was going to say, you remember a week ago, i was in chicago for news coverage. it was cold. it was only about 25 degrees i think. >> right. >> especially compared to this. that was nothing. >> right.

to the end. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: we got something we never get, specific guidance of where things stand with the mueller investigation. matt whitaker says he has been fully briefed on the probe and the investigation is close to being completed. he was not more specific than that. our sources have told us the mueller investigation could be done in the next few weeks. so far, 34 people have been indicted by the special counsel. there have been five conviction, the latest trump adviser roger stone who said he will plead not guilty. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. in washington hundreds of thousands are back on the job. the financial impact is staggering. the non-partisan congressal office stills the shutdown costs $11 billion and $3 billion will never be recovered. president trump is warning if he doesn't get his border wall, there could be another shutdown on february 15th. president trump is now set to

deliver the state of the union next tuesday, a week later than originally planned. house speaker nancy pelosi invited the president to give the speech to a joint session of congress after sending the initial invitation because of the government shutdown. president trump's former fixer and attorney michael cohen has agreed to speak to the intelligence committee behind closed doors. he postponed a public hearing before another house panel, citing threats from the president. cohen has pled guilty to lying to congress and campaign finance violations as he continues to cooperate in the russia investigation. his legal team announced a shakeup. he is replacing two of his lawyers with a pair of top criminal defense attorneys. people in cuba are cleaning up after a deadly tornado ripped nation. they say 50 people were killed and 200 were hurt when the twisters spawned in savannah. this is the strongest tornado to

in the shoulder, he has already been released from the hospital. but two others remain hospitalized as they recover from this incident that happened while they were trying to execute a narcotics search warrant. at some point gunfire erupted at the house authorities have surrounded and four officers were shot. a fifth was injured. they were all rushed to the hospital in houston here for treatment and we saw those pictures of the life flight helicopter landing at a local hospital here as well as ambulances that took various officers to the hospital. we also know this morning that two suspects who police say were involved in this shootout were killed. the governor has called this a horrific attack. he says that it was a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice that law enforcement make every single day and jenay and kenneth, these were experienced police officers. two of them are sergeants in their 50s. the youngest officer who was injured is 33-years-old. this morning the community is hoping for their speedy recovery.
