night's meeting as parents, teachers and students fought to save roots international academy. the school board voted 6-1 to close the school. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the details from oakland. >> reporter: protesters brought the oakland school board meeting to a halt. board members forced to leave the stage. >> we will not be divided and conquered. >> these parents, students, and teachers fighting to save roots international academy in east oakland from possible closure. >> y'all want to shut us down. at the end of the day, we're still a family and we're going to always remain strong. >> reporter: the district says roots academy has poor test scores and only 266 students. >> roots is a quality school. i'm tell you this, despite what you see. >> when we strike. >> we win. >> meantime union reps begin monday to begin a strike vote for oakland teachers.

the immediate and the long-term. >> officers found her beaten in a park in visitation valley three weeks ago. ghaith ron faces charges for crimes. we should no later today the date for his preliminary hearing. the 35 day shutdown is over. this morning we're learning how much it cost. the congressional budget office estimates it cost the economy $11 billion. as abc reporter serena marshall explains, lawmakers are trying to avoid a second shutdown. >> reporter: good morning. the government has been open less than a week. already the assessment of what was loss is much greater than expected as another shutdown looms in the future. $11 billion. that's how much the u.s. economy lost due to the 35-day shutdown of the sobering new estimate from the nonpartisan congressional budget office much greater than expected. but it wasn't just the economy that saw repercussions. ntsb says critical evidence from

all right. let's talk about what's going on. you can see heavy rain totals coming. not to the sierra. not yet. we'll talk more about that. here is a look at our fog. once again san joaquin valley, dense fog. visibility 200 to 800 feet. that's pretty dangerous especially when you're talking about speeds up to about 60 to 65 miles per hour when it takes 150 to 200 feet to stop.

here is a look at what's going to go. ou can see rain falls apart, creasing sunshine and mid-60s until you get to the southern parts of the state. 62 in los angeles. i'd say 72 in los angeles, excuse me. here is a look at lake tahoe. snow starts wednesday and keeps snowing through the weekend. >> mike, thank you. this morning on the peninsula, police want to find the thieves behind a series of car break-ins. video captured the pair in the act on the west side of san mateo. in the back ground there, you can see one man get into two cars, one right after the other. police say the burglaries happened saturday between midnight and 7:30 in the morning. the thieves got into both unlocked cars and smashed the windows of locked vehicles. >> if you recently bought nectarines at costco, check the label. there's a recall because of possible wisteria contamination. 4 pound plastic clam shells

than the one next door. while i was on a combat patrol my c in baqubah, iraq,nned out. a rocket-propelled grenade took my arm off at the shoulder. when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay.

"nightly new everything pretty dry. by 7:00 it starts to roll in and dampen our commute. fairly light but doesn't take much. heavier rain from 7:00 through thursday morning with a half inch, 3/4 around the bay to more than an inch up in the north bay. it's going to be our first soaker of many. reggie. >> thank you, mike. a new bill would make animal cruelty a felony across the country. republicans and democrats in the house of representatives introduced the bill last week. a person convicted of animal cruelty could face a fine or up to seven years in prison or both. all states have laws against animal cruelty on the state level but this would give prosecutors more scope on the federal level.
