as part of our commitment to building a better bay area, we're digging into issues like homelessness. >> part of the solution to ending homeless crisis in our area is knowing exactly how many people are currently living on the street. >> today a count is happening in the south bay. abc news reporter matt keller joins us live from san jose. ma matt. >> reporter: yeah, reggie, the count started very early. volunteers are out driving around san jose just like we are right now and other places to start this count. this is the first of two days they will be doing this. here is video from about a half hour ago. mayor sam liccardo and others taking part in this count near highway 87. about 400 volunteers and others from community organizations are collecting information on people living in emergency shelters and transitional housing as well as people sleeping on the streets, cars, abandoned properties and other places. so why is this done? required by u.s. housing and urban development of all jurisdictions receiving funding for houses and services for

around 8:00 a.m. wednesday. she ran away from him. police released these photos of the man's dodge van. they say the man appeared to be in his 50s with gray hair and a beard. anyone with information asked to call vallejo police. police are investigating the attack on a man on his way to fisherman's wharf between columbus and hyde saturday night. the 32-year-old man was going to argonaut hotel when a group of men attacked him punched, kicked, threw the victim against a brick wall. they were seen hanging out in front of see's candy store on beach and hyde before the attack. >> alone walking around this neighborhood, especially at nighttime, it's terrifying, especially a group of people sitting and waiting to do something, then it's like really terrifying. >> officers are reviewing surveillance video to try to identify those suspects.

the victim remains in the hospital. police say he's improving but in very serious condition. the democratic presidential hopeful kamala harris touted truth and unity during a town hall meeting with voters in iowa. >> enough with these powerful forces trying to sow hate and division among us. that is not who we are as americans. >> cnn hoesed this town hall meeting. senator harris spoke about her support for health care for all, gun control measures and opposition to the death penalty. she addressed critics who think a man would make a better nominee. >> in my entire career i heard people say when i ran and ran as the first woman who would win, people aren't ready, it's not your time, nobody like you has done that before, i haven't listened and i would suggest nobody should listen to that kind of conversation. >> as a senator, harris said she supports border security but will not vote for president trump's wall under any circumstances. let's look at a new poll out

from abc news "washington post." either showing you president trump's odds at winning the 2020 election. >> it appears mr. trump has enough support to secure the republican nomination. the poll shows he's the clear favorite among republicans and gop leaning independents. 65% of republicans say the party should nominate him again. 32% say the party should nominate someone else. president trump's lead is less certain in the general election. only 28% of registered voters across the company say they would definitely vote for mr. trump in 2020. 14% say they would consider voting for him. 56% of voters say they would definitely not vote for him. the poll shows there's no clear front-runner on the democratic nomination. take a look at that side. 43% have no opinion who should be the party nominee. 9% want former vice president joe biden. senator kamala harris ranks second at 8%.

all right. here is a look at live doppler 7 showing a heavy slug of rain. some of this is reaching the ground but very light. i just checked rain gauge. just about all of them are saying we haven't reached .01". if you look at the cams you see a sheen on the road. a look at future radar starting at 6:00. a chance of light rain through

>> the caller say they were in the elevator since friday. >> they have been in the elevator since friday. >> new at 6:00, firefighters rescued a woman who was trapped in an elevator for three days with no food or water. she told authorities she was cleaning a private townhouse in new york city on friday when she got stuck in an elevator. no one came home until the monday morning. she was found barely conscious and is now recovering in the hospital. what a nightmare. >> that is horrifying. >> four houston police officers in the hospital after they were hurt in a shoot-out, a suspected drug house. the governor of texas describes it as being horrific. the officers faced gunfire when they searched the home yesterday. police shot and killed two suspects. this morning two officers are in critical condition, three others in good condition, one has been released. a tip from a neighborhood initially led police to the home. the dmv's request for $40

million to hire extra workers has been delayed. the money would have helped reduce those long and frustrating wait times. the state department of finance made that decision to wait on the funding until lawmakers finish an audit of the agency. californians have endured extended wait times as people have swarmed dmv offices to get driver's licenses and id cards that comply with federal real id standards. >> former governor jerry brown started getting his pension. it's $120,000 a year. our partners report brown is getting nearly $10,000 a month after more than 33 years of service. he served a record years as governor. he's going to a ranch his family has owned for 150 years. just say no to winter. >> that's what they are trying to build up work forces by attracting people to warm

billionbas. pg&e estimates its liability from recent wildfires are more than $30 billion. now the bankruptcy filing means fire victims will have little chance of getting c punitivlaim. pg&e released a statement overnight about the filing saying we are fully committed to enhancing our wildfire safety efforts as well as helping restoration and rebuilding efforts across the communities impacted by the devastating northern california wildfires. there is, though, a lot of upset people this morning. one investor, blue mountain capital management is calling for the entire board of directors to be dumped and replaced. reporting live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. pg&e stock has had a wild ride in the last few weeks with trading just getting under way this morning. here is a look at where it stands right now in the new york stock exchange. we haven't seen any movement yet

i there. hi, matt. >> since we last saw you we went from downtown san joseo san jose. another group doing a count. that includes the councilmember of san jose. they started at 4:30 and they will go to about 8:00 a.m. here is video from an hour and a half ago. mayor liccardo taking count near west san fernando and highway 87. 400 volunteers and others from community organizations are collecting information on people living in emergency shelters and transitional housing as well as people sleeping on the streets, in cars, abandoned properties and other places. this is required to receive federal funding. it also helps local governments get information on the success or struggles of their programs. >> it's telling us what is working, what we need to focus our dollars on doing, which we know increasingly is preventing homelessness with rental vouchers, rapid rehousing programs. we think those are getting some
