the deepening mystery and the desperate search for a teenager that disappeared from her home in tennessee more than two weeks ago. >> the fbi is on the case in an investigation now that spans four states. here is erielle reshef. >> reporter: a desperate plea to find 14-year-old savannah pruitt more than two weeks after she vanished from her tennessee home. >> savannah, i love you and we want you to come home. >> reporter: she was last seen heading to bed around 11:00 p.m., january 13th. the next morning, her siblings finding her window open, some of her clothes and bed sheets missing, but no sign of the tean. >> she was our life, and our life is gone. it's hard. i mean, it's hard to eat. it's hard to sleep. it's hard to think. >> reporter: authorities say her cell phone last pinged on january 14th, in corbin, kentucky, more than 140 miles from her home in tennessee. but no activity since. >> all the leads we have searched for at this point have hit dead ends.

this morning on "world news now," millions coping with below freezing temperatures right now. >> it's set to be colder than mt. everest in some parts of the country today, and shutting down schools, train service and even mail delivery, thanks to a polar plunge. we'll explain how dangerous these conditions can be. developing this morning, worldwide threats against the u.s. america's top intelligence chiefs talking about russia, north korea, iran and isis. actor attack. the search is on to find the people that assaulted "empire star" jessie smallette. details are coming in from detectives.

have windchills in the minus 20s. >> even atlanta will have a windchill of 16. we begin with abc's alex perez. >> reporter: whiteout conditions from lake-effect snow sending drivers sliding all over a michigan highway. >> westbound at kalamazoo. reported multiple semis. at least ten vehicles involved. >> reporter: this multi-car wreck pinning some inside their vehicles. at least seven taken to the hospital. the blinding snow charged by super arctic air that's pouring into the lower 48 like it hasn't in decades. chicago forecasting a windchill of 50 below zero, frostbite can begin in five minutes. >> your extremities, fingers, toes, and those are the areas most affected in a short amount of time, we are talking in minutes. >> reporter: anybody that has to work outside like these minneapolis firefighters, at risk. >> to give you an idea of how cold it is, they take off their helmets and the steam just pours off of them.

>> reporter: our eva pilgrim is also in minneapolis. >> reporter: it's so cold it's hard to talk if you have been out here for any amount of time. dangerously cold, and you can see with our thermal camera, even with four layers on, the heat is escaping from my coat any where it can. >> reporter: authorities warning drivers, be prepared. make sure your car's tank is at least half full so fuel lines don't freeze. they warn cell phones can stop working in extreme cold and medications like insulin can lose effectiveness if they freeze. and, part of what makes this cold so dangerous is how long it will linger here in chicago. those bone chilling piercing below zero windchills will be around for more than 80 hours. alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> i am thinking about all those working outside, alex perez, our crew, any folk out there that is supposed to work outside during these frigid temperatures,

>> all that purple. our thanks to paul. there are new details about a houston shoot-out that left four officers wounded and two suspects dead. officials say a husband and wife ambushed the officers as they executed a search warrant. the man firing at officers entering a suspected drug house. the two died during the encounter, and one of the wounded officers had been shot twice before. several thousand additional active duty troops will be heading to the southern border. the trump administration spent more than $200 million sending forces to bordering mexico. the arriving troops will support the efforts. the announcement comes as a bipartisan group of lawmakers prepare to meet today to discuss border security and president trump's demand for $5.7 billion for a wall. they are hoping to avert another government shutdown. america's top intelligence chiefs are making it clear that president trump had it wrong on

north korea, russia, iran and isis. they repeatedly contradicted the president's views before congress while outlining global threats to the country. martha raddatz has the details. >> reporter: the nation's top intelligence officials presented the most thorough assessment of the global threats facing our nation, and one of the clearest examples yet of how their conclusions differ starkly from the president's own. take north korea, which after last year's summit, trump proclaimed there's no longer a nuclear threat from north korea. this from the director of the cia. >> the regime is committed to developing a long-range nuclear arm missile that would pose a direct threat to the united states. >> reporter: and iran where trump last year warned of dire consequences if the u.s. remained part of a nuclear deal. >> in just a short period of time the world's leading state sponsor of terror will be on the cusp of acquiring the world's most dangerous weapons.

>> reporter: but from the director of national intelligence -- >> we do not believe iran is currently undertaking activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device. >> reporter: and isis, this was donald trump just last month. >> we have won against isis. we have beaten them and beaten them badly. >> reporter: intelligence officials making it clear isis is down, but definitely not out. >> the group has returned to its warfare roots, continuing to plot attacks. >> reporter: and finally after russia meddling in the 2016 election that trump often casts doubt upon, a stark warning that russia will be back at it again in 2020. in fact the officials said russian meddling and other foreign adversaries will continue to try and target u.s. elections, and they have adapted from the last time around.

martha raddatz, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to martha this morning. federal investigators will be look into the deadly crash of a medical helicopter. the chopper went down in a wooded area of southern ohio killing all three crew members on board. they were flying from one hospital to another to pick up a patient. closing arguments are set in the trial of the mexican drug lord known as el chapo. his defense rests after calling one witness that testified for less than half hour. the case now could go to the jury in new york as early as friday. guzman could face life in prison if convicted of the drug and murder conspiracy charges. a consumer alert. for the second time this month purdue is recalling the chicken nuggets. this involved fun shaped chicken nuggets. they are being recalled because they contain milk which is not listed on the label. the 12 ounce packages have a use by date of march 11th. they were shipped to the stores in the northeastern u.s. so far no reports of anybody getting sick because of the nuggets.

police are treating it as a possible hate crime. here is danya bacchus. >> reporter: police say the actor was filming and out getting a snack when he was attacked by masked men around 2:00 in the morning. the star of the popular drama series "empire" telling police he was approached by two unknown offenders yelling out racial and homo phobic slurs towards him and they beat him up, poured an unknown chemical over him and wrapped a rope around his neck. he told investigators the attackers were yelling. investigators believe this might be a hate crime. they are look into a letter delivered over a week ago threatening the actor's life. in real life -- >> there is no closet. there's never been a closet that i have been in. >> reporter: smollett publicly coming out on the ellen degeneres show, and his character is a gay man that wants to please his powerful

thursday. that means frostbite on exposed skin can begin in as little as five minutes. emergency rooms already seeing an increase in cases and bracing for more in the days to come. officials warning residents to not only bundle up, but consider not going out at all until the dangerous temperatures pass. part of what is making the arctic cold so dangerous is how long it will linger in chicago, and those bitter below zero windchills could be around more than 80 hours. alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> so cold. >> and it's incredible alex was able to speak that long in those temperatures. hundreds of flights to and from chicago are canceled today and amtrak suspended services there. >> the windchill will feel like almost 60 degrees below zero on the university of minnesota campus. >> what? >> this is what it does to you. frost covered part of the face of a student jogging along the mississippi river today. why was he jogging? >> why? that's crazy.
