sleep. >> do people come out of the grocery store and offer groets ris? >> yes. >> a lot? >> yes. >> don says with severe arthritis it's harder being homeless at age 68. he sleeps at a carpet store. the number of homeless seniors went up 88% during the last count sfwl we're seeing an increase number in seniors that are first time homeless. showing up at shelters. at 85 years old with no place to go. >> it's heartbreaking. for the staff and everybody. >> 66 year-old mike is one of them. >> how are things changing out here in the homeless community? >> big bags. there's more women than men. they have children. >> this dog is 53 year-old's only child.

she was a teacher. but a dui and missed rent payment put her on the streets. >> your landlord is gouging. they they're struggling too. they will put you out for somebody that can pay. real quick. so. you're one check away. >> one paycheck away from homelessness in the expensive bay area. that number is expected to go up. as the results are released in april. now all of the homeless i talked to today here and bay point told me they are seeing more children and especially more women out here on the streets homeless. i talked to several homeless women who say they have to booby trap the area the they sleep in to keep male sexual predators away at night while they sleep. >> that is so scary.

see you at 6:00. alameda county counted its homeless population this morning. oakland mayor was out on the street viewing the problem firsthand. we caught up with the mayor. >> final r finding people tucked away. and counting them. was the goal of the morning in the oakland. this view of one encamp. gives an idea of the size and difficulty of the assignment. we caught up with the mayor. who was impacted by the experience. >> it's emotional. the point of this count is also our way as a community of saying that our unsheltered residents count. >> the number will be higher than it was when they counted two years ago. the mayor says the cost of housing is to blame. but not the only issue. >> we as a county a state, a country, are not addressing the mental health crisis.

and the drug addiction. these public health crisis have to be addressed. >> we're in a crisis. which is a reality. up and down the west coast. yes, it's solvable. >> the homeless coordinator says being out there counting people drives home how real the issue is. he wasn't discouraged this morning. saying the city is working hard to get people into housing. >> already the city is doing innovative things. we have the community cabins. housing hundreds more people in emergency shelters. we opened a new transitional housing facility. we'll open more. >> the count is required in order to secure federal funding to address the homeless issue. the city of oakland thinks it will have the final number sometime this spring. >> as we reported oakland has three shed sights. the people living there were counted as homeless.

the first site opened in january last year. and recently closed. which the city says was part of the plan. most of the people there are in permanent housing. >> 76%. three out of four are in some form of real housing. that's great. those are numbers we can be proud of. >> last week the city opened a site in east oakland and two more planned to open in the next couple months. >> in 2017 the census there found close to 7,400 homeless people. only once in the past ten years has that number dipped below the 7,000 mark. we want to hear any of your ideas about the issue in the bay area. use the hash tag better bay area. >> good samaritans pulled two drivers out of wrecked cars today moments before the vehicles caught fire. the crash happened this morning in fremont. sky 7 showing us the after math

it's causing the on top of the train to go higher than they should. it's causing all kinds of problems. the switches are a vulnerable point in the system. if they fail you have delays. if you don't have to use the switch. >> that metro rail is like cal train. in san francisco. to imagine this, only 10% of the ridership was on the trains today. many people across the city not going to work or school. this is probably going to happen again today. >> we compared our transit systems. we also have something else in common. the homeless crisis. you have that in chicago. about 80,000 in your city. there must be extraordinary efforts right now to bring people in. keep them off the streets and warm. >> that's an ongoing problem

here. and i have to say, it has been amazing to watch all the city services and of course people like the salvation army taking their trucks and getting out there and reaching these people. the city says there's 6,000 homeless that number 80,000 comes from the chicago coalition. obviously it's something in between. the big question is as it is in san francisco respecting peoples atonmy. i haven't seen a lot of homeless people in the street. hopefully they're well taken care of tonight. hearts break for them everywhere. >> thank you so much. usually midwest head south to find warmer temperatures in the winter. they might shiver less if they head north. this morning windchill plunged to 70 below 0 in minnesota. chicago temperature dipped to minus 23. it's warmer now in alaska.

disaster or another. it has tremendous impact on you as a person. i always ask the question, if you only have five minutes to go into your house, could you get your stuff? what i mean by that the important documents that identify who you are. what you're doing. all your bank accounts. the fact you own a house. a will and a trust. you'll need those to make sure everything is right. so you have to be able to do this within five minutes. so we have had all the disasters happen. more and more frequent. to make it easy, use your iphone. take pictures of everything you own. and documents. if you have to prove something you have a record. down load it and store it. away from your house. >> it's not there to burn up. or whatever. now you have to be saving money.

it's different saving for this and clelk college education. >> it's a different kind of money. actually for a disaster, you want to keep cash on hand. maybe a store many in your house. generally you want to keep one month salary. because when it happens, the atm can be closed. the electronic system can be down. you may need cash immediately in the middle of the night. we suggest having that cash and keeping it hidden. you have to remember where you hid it. >> don't fetell anybody about i >> you need cash cash. >> because you'll have to buy water. if you haven't prepared water. you'll have to buy food. you have to have money available. >> you had a month worth. that's the general rule. >> for you it might be two. it depends. the concept is you have to have
