happening now, brutally cold and below zero windchills are paralyzing major midwest cities. at least eight people have died from the cold weather. in chicago, temperatures registered at minus 23 degrees causing sea fog to rise from lake michigan. the coldest windchill in the country was in minnesota, which hit minus 66 degrees. the governor is asking residents to turn down their thermostats to avoid overstraining the system. yikes. it's unimaginable. it's hard to tell people to turn the heat down at a time like that. >> we're grateful to be here and not there. >> absolutely. we're dealing with wet weather this morning. mild temperatures, most of us in the low to mid-50s. the exception los gatos at 48. santa rosa at 49. clear lake 47. ukiah at 45. let's look at what's going on in san jose. here's a look at 101 and 880. we have steadier rain falling right now. as we head through 7:00, we'll

rafael to san francisco looking good at 15 minutes. thanks, alexis. we're tracking breaking news. multiple cars are on fire there. you're taking a live look at it. you can see a big response. many firefighters on the ground already, at least a dozen cars are said to be on fire. this is all happening on a top deck of the parking lot for terminal c. according to our sister station in new york, wabc, no one has heard. newark airport is a major hub for united airlines. this doesn't appear to be impacting airport operations right now. we'll have updates throughout the morning. it's also very cold in newark this morning. they're kind of battling this fire under conditions that are not ideal. tourism is a key industry in the bay area. for some who live near tourist hotspots, it can ruin the day-to-day lives. >> abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area which means we dig into the issues where you live. according to theil

>> he was going to sexually assault one or both of the children. a federal judge berated pg&e saying the company puts profits ahead of safety. u.s. district court judge william alsup said they made excuse toss turn off electricity during times of high fire danger. the judge is overseeing a criminal conviction against pg&e after a deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno in 2010. t we tried to get a response from the interim ceo after a court hearing yesterday. >> to the consumers who worry about the wildfires for this coming season. mr. simon, the judge is clearly worried about this. >> in court, pg&e said it was not able to complete tree trimming near electrical lines because of lack of qualified tree professionals. the hearing came a day after pg&e filed for a chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

this is the third time the parole board side wd her. but former governor jerry brown refused to release her. in the north bay, nearly 100 marin general hospital workers plan to go on strike tomorrow. union organizers say 20 engineers and 65 imaging technicians will protest the green hospital demand that they pay hundreds of dollars more a month to keep their health plan or accept a lesser plan. the contract expires today. the imaging technicians have been working without a contract since october. let's look at live doppler 7 showing you where the extent of the rain reaches north. it's in san mateo bridge, belmont, redwood city right down 82 and 280 and 101 into the south bay. the heaviest of the rain is over for the south bay right now. but you have plenty of puddles left over from the moderate rain that came through the labs couple of hours. we have scattered showers moving through the east bay right now. if you're coming through the altamont pass, it's wet also.

680, walnut creek, everything is pretty much wet from the overnight rain as we expected. your commute really heavily favored towards this morning with slick conditions for the roads, umbrella if you're taking mass transit. a wet morning out on the bay. here's a look at the east bay. by 8:00, we're starting to see mostly cloudy conditions. low to mid-60s from noon all the way through 6:00. 57 at 8:00. you'll need the sunglasses eventually up in the north bay. we'll turn to partly sunny afternoon. noon 64 at 4:00. for san francisco, cloudy at 8:00. a little drizzle and we'll see full-on sunshine by 4:00 and 61 degrees. pretty mild temperatures once again. we've got a bigger storm tomorrow. we'll talk about that. want to hope you had a great time off. >> thank you. >> the commute back wasn't very kind, was it? >> not wasn't. we've got soggy conditions and a few collisions as well. want to take you to the

low pressure bringing us rain. going to slide down the coast and move into so cal as we head into the afternoon hours. low to mid-60s there. mid-60s through the central val which sunshine as you head up to tahoe. let's look at the snow pack today. 101%. it is shrinking but that's about to change. we have a winter storm watch starting at 4:00 tomro evening through 4:00 monday. that's the entire weekend.

that threat of thunderstorms with it. for the afternoon hours, we'll have low 60s in about all neighborhoods. santa rosa, ukiah about 63 degrees along with oakland some of the warmer temperatures. lows tonight in the upper 40s to low 50s. pretty comfortable out there. little bit of fog will develop. could sneak into the east bay. here's a look at the bigger system coming at us tomorrow. notice a much longer plume of moisture. that stronger storm is going to have faster wind. let's look at the potential with that storm. here it is. yep, we've got a general area of thunderstorms over top of us. it's a 2 on the storm impact scale with heavy rain and the key to this one is the strong winds. look at the rainfall totals. half inch, 2.5 inches. winds that could gust up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. i'll show you that in the next weather. let's focus on the timing. 7:00 tomorrow morning, cloudy, light rain, especially in the north bay, before we get to noon with some heavier rain moving in

and steadier. you can see the yellow moving in at 4:30 into the north bay. that will spread across the rest of the neighborhoods as we head into the evening hours. overnight, it pushes to the east and wake up with a chance of scattered showers towards saturday morning. then saturday afternoon, we'll still have showers around. a cold rain possible super bowl sunday with a shower possible as we head back to work monday and drying out in the 50s next week. alexis? >> taking a look at the roads this morning. it is soggy. we fortunately don't have too many problems. but we have a new issue on the bay bridge. the westbound 80, i believe it's just in between the two cameras. i'm not seeing anything in the bay bridge toll plaza or the south beach camera. it sounds like we've got a disabled vehicle in the left lane. you can see the haze and a little bit of mist and lowered visibility under the streetlights. we're not seeing major delays due to that.

three years. three bay area walgreens stores could have pharmacy licenses revoked. they're accused of having a pharmacist perform without a license. the map on the left shows fremont, milpitas and san jose. the state board of pharmacies says the woman handled more than 700,000 prescriptions between 1999 and 2017. she no longer works for walgreens. the company says it has reverified the licenses of all pharmacists nationwide. the chief financial officer at tesla is retiring again. the palo alto-based company announced that he will retire. he served from 2008 to 2015 and starting again in 2017. the vp of finance will take over the role. elon musk says he will stay on the job to become a senior adviser for tesla tore years to come. here's a look at my storm

concerns friday into saturday. we'll have pretty intense rainfall rates that would cause puddling and flooding on the roads. the winds getting up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. trees toppling and power lines down. moderate and small stream flooding will be low. noon friday, they pick up around 10 to 20 miles per hour. fabser along the coast. they peak about 10:00. 35 miles per hour for most of us. even 50 along the coast. they do taper overnight through saturday morning. it's going to be a breezy saturday also with 25 to 30 mile per hour gusts. easily, we could have the most damage to the storm. >> the south bay this morning, not looking too terrible. you can't see the wet pavement on state route 87 south of mineta san jose airport. certainly has some slick roads out there this morning. the ramps, the curbs, slow down and take it easy. hydroplaning could be an issue. we're looking excellent so far
