good morning east bay. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. now at 5:00. get ready for wet roads. live doppler 7 tracking rain around the bay area this morning. let's take a live look outside from the tower cameras. you can see our bridges in the area are wet this morning. careful on the roadways as you head out. of course, grab a jacket and umbrel umbrella. good morning. it's january 31st. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast with meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi guys. this is sandhill road and woodside. broadway street in redwood city around santa clara and benton street. all the areas getting rain right now. it extends down into the deep parts of the santa clara valley in the santa cruz mountains. it will be there for several hours. look at the thunderstorms heading towards santa barbara this morning. that's where the most intense rain will be the rest of the day. mears a look at 280 and 17. the wet weather coming down

there. expect it to remain wet, especially in the south bay through 7:00. i am tracking fog in the north bay and the east bay. i'll show you that coming up. it's getting pretty thick pretty quickly. mostly cloudy conditions at noon. mild, near 60. the sun comes out and push us into the low 60s by 4:00. away from the coast, we'll be 59 and very comfortable evening under the stars. 55 to 58. let's turn it over to alexis for that wet commute. >> we did start off with a crash on the san mateo bridge westbound 92. we could see it on camera. it was right here. last time we checked, we still had the flares burning. knows are out. the cars are gone. everything is back to normal. no residual delays from the toll plaza and crossing from hayward into foster city. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 16 minutes. heavy on the bay bridge. reports of a vehicle that ran out of gas before he got to the san francisco exit. you are now in the yellow. southbound 101 san francisco to sfo. >> thanks alexis.

breaking news from new jersey. at least a dozen cars are on fire at newark armt. this is new video from 30 minutes ago. you can see the hung response from first responders. this is all happening on the top deck of the washing lot of terminal c. it's not clear how the fire started. wabc, no one has heard from this. we're going to stay on top of the story and have updates throughout the morning. firefighters are dealing with brutally cold temperatures, 3 degrees in new york. millions of americans, in fact, are dealing with another day of the historic winter weather temperatures. they're so bitter cold. >> the arctic air proved to be dangerous. at least eight people have died across the country, including an 18-year-old university of iowa student. gerald bells was found outside a building on campus early wednesday. the windchill in iowa city was 51 degrees below zero at the time. officials have not received an

official cause of death. city officials are reaching out to the homeless. buses have been turned into rolling warming shelters. >> wow. >> new video from morristown, new jersey, showing a snow squall. snow squalls are bursts of heavy snow that move quickly. the snow blows sideways because of the strong wind. let's go over to meteorologist mike nicco for a look at what people are having to face today. >> we'll start with the temperatures. hi everybody. it is brutally, if not deadly cold once again in the upper midwest. it's 21 below noo chicago. 23 below in minneapolis. detroit, negative 13 degrees right now. you factor in the windchill, it feels like 25 to 35 degrees below zero. it is spreading to the east. look at places like cleveland now. 20 degrees below zero. that is going to slowly change today as the high reaches zero in chicago. congratulations.

still below 1 and negative 2 in fargo. it's almost over after today. happening today, pg&e attorneys will be in federal court in san francisco for a hearing on 19 preliminary motions filed in its chapter 11 bankruptcy case. the motions include requests for approval to continue paying employees and suppliers and to borrow $5.5 billion from banks. pg&e officially filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this week. the utility faces billions of dollars in losses from the past two years of wildfires. this morning, protesters will demand victims' families be compensated by pg&e for wildfires caused by the utility. demonstrators, including camp fire victims will march in front of the state capitol today. a cpuc meeting will also take place at that time. uber is reportedly opening a new office in san francisco according to the chronicle. they signed a lease for space on stevenson street between 1st and 2nd in so ma. the building has a financial

services company, lending club and children's clothing company, gymboree. it would be uber's smallest office in the city with 300 employees. uber has four office buildings set to open next year. despite several scandals, including alleged privacy violations and questions about handling of user's data, the number of facebook users is up. the menlo park-based company says it has more than 1.5 billion daily active users in the last few months of 2018. that is up the% from the same time in 2017. happening today, state water officials will conduct a second snow survey of the season. here's a look at the heavenly mountain resort. there's lots of snow from the last survey in early january. it was 67% of normal in this winter's first manual measurement. recent storms added to the state's water supply. the survey will be held at 11:00

a.m. off highway 50 and sierra at tahoe road. happening today, a local school is very clear about who it is cheering on in the super bowl. >> quarterbacks from both teams are from the bay area. only one went to marin catholic. amy hollyfield is live in kentfield. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning. jessica. the students here at marin catholic are working on a surprise good luck message for jared goff. they're working on that for him today. he was the star quarterback here at marin catholic about six years ago. he grew up in novato and went to play at uc berkeley. now he's head today his first super bowl. his high school is not only very exte ao veryoud.isf the at gone through our school. he's got this quiet confidence about him, but he's also kind of silly and he's a good friend. he's a good teammate. he's just a good person.

he's the kind of kid that you root for. that's really been fun rooting for him through cal and the rams. >> goff is known to come back to this school to visit. also, mentor student athletes. well, today they plan to do something for him. they are going to make a video with good luck messages for him. they're going to go out to the football field and spell out some encouragement. they'll send him the message that they're going to be bringing him love in person. his old coach here at the high school will be at the game on sunday. everyone says they know he's going up the greatest of all-time, tom brady, but they are going to be rooting for him, wishing him all kinds of luck and also praying for him. reporting live in kentfield, amy hollyfield. >> sounds like fun. thank you, amy. tom brady's high school in the sub for the ninth time. >> that's right.

today his parents are heading to atlanta. sports anchor, mindi bach sat down with his parents at their san mateo home. their den is stuffed with memorabilia from their son's 19-year career. that seems logical, right? >> tom brady is 5-3 in super bowls. the patriots qb says he wants to play football until he's 45. so four more years. the bradys say that's fine with them. >> it's getting to be a semi-annual ritual or annual ritual, but it never gets old going back to the super bowl. it's spectacular. that's what we all hope for. >> still get nervous for the game? >> just talking about it, i'm getting the shakes. >> when we finish, we'll go have a drink. >> i like that. >> the entire brady family, including the grandkids have traveled to each of tom's super bowls and they'll meet up again in atlanta. i mean, there's no doubt that it's tom brady's parents. the whole house has to be dedicated to him.

>> why not? they're very proud. as they should be. >> hi mike. hey guys. as a parent, what more could you want? wow. >> here's a look at the south bay. from downtown san jose out towards alum rock in the east foothills, jackson street, mayberry road. north capital avenue all wet this morning. notice how quickly the storm is sliding to the south and drier air is moving in. drier in the form of it's not raining. this is what's developing in its way. you can see fog on the roof cam as we look towards the ferry building and the bay bridge. most of this is centered around this morning. if you're out and about, you need the umbrella for the next hour or two in the south bay. for the bay, if you're out playing, it's dry this afternoon. there will be puddles if y exercising early this morning. east bay valleys, mostly cloudy all the way through the day with temperatures reaching the low to mid-60s from noon to 4:00. we'll see a little moth way of clearing by 6:00 and

smollett said two men yelled racial and homophobic slurs and poured a substance on him and put a rope around his neck. that was early tuesday morning. >> so far investigators have not been able to find video of the attack. senator kamala harris will be the first major democratic presidential candidate to get an official fundraiser. sources tell them this saturday harris will attend an event with a popular l.a. restaurant owner. she will then go to a fundraiser, universal's chairman is hosting. harris officially kicked off her presidential run this past weekend in her hometown of oakland. while she's accepting money from donors, she will not accept money from corporate political action committees. a political documentary could soon be coming to netflix. according to variety magazine,

where the drive for productiv h. at san jose state, i'm amanda dell castillo, abc 7 news. you know how i -- i don't do it 20 hours a day. >> 22 hours is excessive. >> at some point in my workday, my mind just starts to wonder about what i'm going to eat next. then my productivity goes down. >> my husband does it, though. he'll go days without -- he'll go a whole day without eating. >> really? >> the most i can do is ten hours. >> i get hangry. i do. my blood sugar will spike if i go too long without eating. imt when they say it's not for everybody, i'm living proof of that. i have to eat every couple hours to keep the blood sugar. good for them. i wish i looked as thin and healthy as he did. >> san rafael, you can see the fog is a little bit thicker. it will be dry with a mixture of

clouds and sunshine. along with that fog, we're driving on slick streets this morning because of the rain. we'll get a fwraek that rain until tomorrow when it gets heavy and the winds come in. we could have potential damage there. a chance of rain will linger through monday. look at the high temperatures today from 60 at half moon bay, san rafael, richmond, antioch and fairfield and santa rosa. tonight, another mild night. look at these temperatures. mid-40s to low 50s. we should be in the 30s and 40s. not going to happen. tomorrow's a 2. very strong 2. heavy rain, strong winds, chance of thunderstorms. half inch to 2.5 inches. winds reaching up to 50, 55 miles per hour. especially along the coast. higher elevations near the coast. we wake up pretty much cloudy and a lot of fog out there because of the moisture lingering around. it translates into light rain by the time we get to noon. it will be scattered by then. then it's steadier heading

towards 4:30. then watch the flood gates open everywhere as behead through the evening hours and overnight hours. then we wake up saturday morning and we'll be quiet for a while. but saturday afternoon we've got gusty conditions once again and a chance of showers, same thing for super bowl sunday and monday. then we dry out tuesday and wednesday with temperatures in the mid-50s. alexis? >> good morning, mike. i want to take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. yeah. not looking great here. we did have a car that ran out of gas past treasure island. that caused unfortunately, a backup into the toll plaza and the metering lights on pretty early. 5:19 i think they were on before that, though. this looks like this for longer than that. a delay on the approach unless you're using the carpool lanes. a quick check of drive time. westbound highway 80 to the range. southbound 101 to sfo, ten minutes.

a high likelihood of hydroplaning and flooding on our roads. number 2, we're looking at how weather is impacting traffic. we had an early crash westbound 92 on the san mateo bridge. just about a 22-minute drive from hayward to foster city. back in the green. breaking news from new jersey. a huge fire torched 15 cars at newark airport this morning. check out the flames within the last hour. it's not clear how this fire started. no one was hurt. number 4, at least eight people died across the country from the cold weather. that includes an 18-year-old student found on the university of iowa campus. the cause of death not released. number 4, protesters will be demanding victims' families be compensated by pg&e for wildfires caused by the utility. they will march at 9:00 a.m. in sacramento in front of the state capital. students in kentfield at marin catholic will be working on a message for gard goff.

across the bay area this morning. here's a live look outside. we're going to check in with matt keller who tells us, spoiler alert, it's coming down pretty hard there. good morning on this thursday, january 31st. thanks for being here. >> a lot of slick roads, alexis. >> yeah. >> we'll start with mike. a lot of rain in the south bay. >> absolutely. it is tapering back a little bit. welcome back, alexis. here's your wet commute. >> thank you. >> you're welcome. we're using the camera on mt. umunhum. it tapers quickly as you head to the north and the strongest of the storms. look at all the thunderstorms bearing down on santa barbara. what a noisy morning for those folks. the rain seems to have tapered as it's heading south rapidly. notice, everything is wet. there is fog for the morning commute. very mild temperatures. low to mid-50s. our highs this time of the year in the upper 50s, near 60. that's where we'll be at noon. warmer with increasing sun shine

hill. things have really lightened up in the south bay. check out this video from the santa cruz mountains. it was coming down hard on highway 17. the rainmaking it treacherous in the mountains drivers want to take it extra slow there. expected to be a rough commute. in san jose, big downpours as well. you have a lot of spots of localized flooding. the good news being this is all happening overnight. when most people are sleeping. but, of course, as we've seen the commute traffic pick up, you can expect some of the problems on the road. i was checking the pg&e outage map. there's a handful of outages throughout the bay area. that's the good news. i was talking with my photographer and he pointed out, there doesn't seem to be a lot of wind out here. that would cause problems with the downed trees and power lines. right now, just rain. back to you in the studio. >> thanks, matt. you can track the rain as the wind by looking at the abc 7 news app. you can enable push alerts and get the news as it happens. tourism is a key in the bay

area. it can be a bother in other spots. >> we dig into the issues where you live. look at this. according to the san francisco travel association, more than 25 million visitors came to san francisco in 2017 to spend more than $9 billion. last year, more than 26 million people were projected to visit and spend nearly $9.5 billion. tourists can put pressure on the people living near the must-see attractions. that's why the world famous lombard street is one step closer to a new reservation and ticket system. >> last night, abc 7 news was at a community meeting where residents gave feedback about the proposal. the san francisco county transportation authority has two proposals. both would require all cars driving down that section of lombard to make a reservation and then either charge 5 bucks 24/7 or make it go up to ten bucks on the weekends. >> i watch every weekend cars catch on fire.

suspect grabbed the other girl, pinned her to the ground and choked her. he ran when one of the girl's fathers became aware of the attack. he was going to sexually assault one or both of the children. >> a federal judge berated pg&e saying the company puts profits ahead of safety. william alsup says the utility made excuse toss avoid turning off electricity during times of high fire danger. the judge is overseeing a criminal conviction after a deadly gas pipeline explosion in san bruno in 2010. our reporter dan noyes tried to get a response from pg&e's interim ceo after a court hearing yesterday. >> the consumers, worry about the wildfires for this coming season. >> mr. simon, the judge is clearly worried about this. >> in court, pg&e said it was not able to complete tree trimmings near electrical lines because of a lack of qualified tree professionals.

the hearing came a day after they filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the clock is ticking for legislators to reach a deal to keep the government open past february 15th. the president's demand for a border wall remains the toughest obstacle. he made it clear in a tweet, no wall, no deal. in a new interview with the daily caller, president trump blames former house speaker paul ryan for reneging on a promise to give him the wall saying, quote, i was going to veto the omnibus bill and paul told me in the strongest of language, please don't do that, we'll get you the wall and then he went lame duck. house members have left washington and won't return until tuesday, the same day as the safety union. president trump said part of the speech will be border-related. a three-day traffic sting led to more than 300 arrests. investigators say 93 law enforcement agencies, including several in northern california took part in the sting. they rescued nearly 50 victims.

more than a dozen were children. it's unclear how many people arrested or were rescued from the bay area. in the north bay, nearly a hundred marin general hospital bourquers plan to go on strike tomorrow. union organizers say 20 engineers and 65 imaging technicians protest the hospital's demands that employees pay hundreds of dollars more a month or to accept a lesser plan. the contract expires today. the imaging technicians have been working without a contract since october. brutally cold and extremely dangerous wind chilts are paralyzing midwest cities. at least eight people have died from the cold weather. in chicago, temperatures registered at minus 23 degrees causing sea fog to rise from lake michigan. the coldest windchill in the country was in minnesota which hit minus 66 degrees. the governor there is asking residents to turn down their thermostats, though torques avoid overstraining the system.

as reggie pointed out earlier this morning, mike, it's hard to ask people to turn down the heat when it's so cold. >> absolutely. you do anything you can to stay warm at that point in time. your house, if it's 30 below outside and your house is 70, that little six-inch wall is keeping the 100-degree temperature difference away from you. that's amazing. the houses are expensive in minnesota. i built one. that's the reason why. because they have to build them for that extreme weather. instead of using 2 by 4s, they use 2 by 6s a lot to fit more insulation in the walls. couldn't even go in our attic. it had to be sealed and airtight just to keep it warm. here's a look at what's going on in san jose. milpitas into the depths of of the santa clara valley, we have the best radar returns right now. temperatures x look at this. we're in the low to mid-50s.

in the east bay valleys, we could be in the 20s and 30s. we should be in the 30s. we could easily be in the 20s. look at this. only 48 napa. santa rosa and fairfield and 47 los gatos. is it even a bit kind of chilly. the western span of the bay bridge, even though it's not raining here, it's wet. all this caution for the wet weather this morning. by noon, everything will be dry. in the evening commutet will be fine weatherwise. look at the temperatures ramp up from 55 where there's a slight chance of a stray shower at 8:00 to sun and clouds and 62 at 4:00. the north bay, we've got fog forming there right now. that will be around through about 10:00 and a mixture of sun and clouds. look at the mid-60s through 4:00. in san francisco, we have a chance of a shower through 8:00. then we'll have sun and clouds dancing through our sky and reach 61 this afternoon. now, we've got a very cold system coming our way, which means snow levels down to 3500
