regular californians. >> the campfire was the deadliest and most destructive fire in history. the cause of the fire has not been determined. as part of our effort ongoing effort to build a better bay area, we are looking at big issues that we face here. homelessness is one of them. and a big camp in oakland is now being removed. the village sits at the base of the 22nd avenue bridge. you have seen it between fruitville and lake merit's station. laura anthony is on the story. >> reporter: piece by piece, public works crews began dismantling the large homeless encampment known as the village in east oakland.

how does it look? >> it is smashed. >> reporter: tammy has lived here for a year in a camp that was sanctioned by the city. >> i think it helps clean up the garbage, but we're not garbage. >> it has been a problem spot for a long time. >> reporter: residents were warned months ago that this day would come. >> this is about to become a construction zone to the retrofit of this bridge. we need this entire area cleared so what we have been doing over the past few months is outreach and a census of the individuals living here. >> reporter: two large fires of the village last fall. also growing concerns about health and safety at the encampment and about residents illegally tapping into power on
