why he was outside in the middle of the night. driving conditions have been treacherous. this car lost control slamming into a police patrol car in iowa. in upstate new york this was the scene north of syracuse where up to three feet of snow is expected by this morning. meanwhile, overnight some good news for people in michigan, they can finally turn the heat up in their homes again after being asked to conserve earlier this week because of a fire at a natural gas facility. we'll take a closer look at the weekend forecast and the warmer temperatures coming up in less than five minutes. we turn now to the other big story this morning. what's being called the largest fentanyl bust in u.s. history. the drug is 50 times more powerful than heroin. a massive shipment has been stopped at the southern border and now authorities are revealing how they found it. border patrol in arizona calls this the biggest fentanyl bust ever. nearly 254 pounds of the deadly synthetic opioid worth an

estimated $3.5 million. >> the drugs that you see next to me were attempted to be smuggled into the united states from mexico. >> reporter: agents became suspicious of a tractor trailer carrying cucumbers which was trying to enter the united states states through a border checkpoint. the load was sent for a secondary inspection when this truck mounted x-ray found hidden compartments in the truck. >> they like to use vehicles with hidden compartments that they're able to track say instead of between ports of entry. >> reporter: they say the amount in this shipment was enough to provide 115 million lethal doses of the drugm which is now blamed for the majority of overdose deaths in the united states. >> it is said that a quarter milligram or the size of a few grains of salt of fentanyl, which is a dangerous opioid, can kill a person very quickly. >> reporter: also on the tractor trailer, 395 pounds of meth, the third largest seizure of its kind in the u.s. data from customs and border protection shows smuggling of

meth and fentanyl is on the rise. and the ports araces for smuggl drugs through the country. >> most hard narcotics seized are at the ports of entry and that's the case here. >> reporter: this bust comes as president trump continues to push for a border wall. overnight the president responded tweeting, our great u.s. border patrol agents made the biggest fentanyl bust in our country's history. thanks, as always, for a job well done. agents say a 26-year-old mexican national was driving the truck containing the drugs. he is under arrest and agents say they are looking for others who conspired with him. president trump appears to be giving up on reaching a deal with congress as another government shutdown looms telling "the new york times" that border security talks are, a, quote, waste of time, and he is suggesting that declaring a national emergency is likely so he can free up money for his wall. the president has also made a stunning about-face on his intelligence chiefs now saying the media misquoted their testimony to congress earlier this week.

abc's serena marshall is in washington. she has the new details. good morning, serena. >> reporter: goodning. and it wasn't just one contradiction on foreign policy but it was on isis, iran, north korea and now the president is saying they didn't contradict him at all. president trump contradicting his own contradiction summoning his intelligence chiefs to the white house on thursday and claiming their tuesday testimony before congress and broadcast on live tv was mischaracterized by the media. >> they said that they were totally misquoted, and they were totally -- it was taken out of context. >> reporter: the reversal following this statement only four hours earlier. >> i disagree with certain things that they said. i think i'm right, but time will prove that. >> reporter: and came after the president berated those very same hand-picked intelligence officials tweeting wednesday, they are extremely passive and naive and they are wrong. the back and forth all over these public discrepancies. on isis, the president has said --

>> we have won against isis. >> reporter: but his director of national intelligence says isis -- >> still commands thousands of fighters in iraq and syria. >> reporter: on iran -- >> we do not believe iran is currently undertaking activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device. >> reporter: while the president has claimed the country is close to acquiring a nuclear weapon. but on north korea the president has said they're willing to denuclearize. the cia director, though, says their intelligence shows otherwise. >> the regime is committed to developing a long-range nuclear armed missile that would pose a direct threat to the united states. >> reporter: in a "new york times" interview published overnight, the president standing by his latest comments saying, when you read their testimony and you read their statements, it was mischaracterized by the media. in that same "new york times" interview president trump said he never directed roger stone to correspond with wikileaks and that the outgoing deputy attorney general rod rosenstein told him he that he was not a subject of the mueller investigation.

kenneth, janai. >> a lot of details in that interview, serena marshall, thank you. today the trump administration is announcing a plan to lower prescription drug prices by shifting discounts directly to patients. the proposal would move away from the current system of hidden rebates among drugmakers, insurers and third parties. money would instead be paid directly to consumers when they buy their medications, but some democrats are vowing to fight the idea. they say the plan would force medicare recipients to pay higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs. the st. louis police officer charged with killing another officer during a russian roulette-style game is now under house arrest. court documents say the officer was on duty but had gone home when he shot fellow officer katlyn alix. the court papers also say he had been drinking. the city prosecutor is asking whether the police department tried to block testing him for alcohol and drugs, which prompted an angry response from the police chief. >> the accusation by the circuit attorney that any action taken by the members of our

investigative unit or our internal affairs division on this tragic morning as an obstructionist tactic was unwarranted, certainly untimely and absolutely irresponsible. >> reporter: the department had initially described the shooting as accidental. the officer is charged with involuntary manslaughter. time now for a look at your weather forecast for this friday. >> good morning. we've still got a little bit of chill sticking around for us as you head out this friday morning. some of those real feel values still below zero and there's also a little bit of snow, especially here along the mason-dixon line. some places could pick up as much as an inch of snow, a little bit more in some of those higher elevations but the big story will be the warm-up heading through for the weekend. saturday, sunday, into monday, some of our temperatures in the northeast will be in the 50s. i'm accuweather meteorologist melissa constanzer.

well, catholic leaders in texas are apologizing after identifying hundreds of alleged pedophile priests. they released the names of 286 priests and others who are accused of sexually abusing children. it's one of the biggest disclosures of names since last year's explosive grand jury report in pennsylvania. most of those identified in texas have already passed away. the driver of an armored truck accused of stealing an estimated $850,000 from louisville, kentucky, has been arrested in connecticut. police say mark espinoza tried to use a forged birth certificate to get a driver's license. once he was fingerprinted, they identified him as a fugitive and say a significant amount of cash was found at his apartment, but they would not reveal the exact amount. a new attempt to place health warnings on ads for soda has gone flat. a federal appeals court has blocked san francisco's law which would have required advisories on ads for sugary drinks. the court ruled the warnings would violate commercial speech protected under the first amendment.

quickly move in using a flash bang as a distraction pulling hartzell out safely taking down monk. thursday, the librarian receiving a medal of valor and the 19 arizona correction staffers who rescued him also recognized. monk was already serving a 97-year sentence. he now faces new charges for the hostage situation. danya bacchus, abc news, los angeles. a new jersey man has been arrested after he was caught on camera faking a slip and fall at his workplace. this video shows him tossing ice on the floor then he eases himself down. investigators say he stayed on the ground until someone found him and then filed an insurance claim. he is charged with insurance fraud and theft by deception. you see that video, just easing his way down. theft by deception there.

in health news a new study is warning parents to make sure your children don't use too much toothpaste. the cdc found too many children are using too much of it when they brush. the agency says overusing fluoride as a child can lead to streaky or splotchy teeth as they get older. kids under 3 should use an amount the size of a grange of rice. children ages 3 to 6 should use an amount the size of a pea. maroon 5's lead singer adam levine is addressing the controversy over his band's agreeing to perform amid the controversy over the nfl's handling of colin kaepernick and player protests. that controversy reportedly hampered the search for performers. levine tells "entertainment tonight" that he spoke to many people before agreeing to perform and says it's always been his dream to play at the big game. >> i'm not in the right profession if i can't handle a little bit of controversy. it's what it is. we expected it. we'd like to move on from it and

like i said earlier speak through the music. >> levine didn't give away any details about sunday's show but he said the band is trying to be a voice for the voiceless. l.a. lakers fans are celebrating the return of lebron james. he missed 17 games after straining his groin on christmas day. he came back last night and scored 24 points to lift the lakers over the clippers, 123-120 in overtime. the game also included comedian billy crystal behind the mike joining the broadcasters calling the game. he's a clippers fan. he's had season tickets since 1985. meanwhile in san antonio, the spurs game had to be delayed in the first quarter because of bats in the arena swooping down onto the court. while most of the players cleared out, security guards at the at&t center spent a few minutes trying to round up those surprise visitors, even trying to use a net there. you see those bats flying around there.

forecast. here's a look at the storm system itself. you can see it's still a little bit offshore. let me go through what to expect today. 3:00 this afternoon, to 6:00 tomorrow morning, that's when you have to have everything inside or locked down. winds could gust out of the southeast up to 60 miles per hour. we have the potential for flooding starting at 7:00 this evening through noon tomorrow. watch out for rapid rise in water just about everywhere. let's get a check of the morning commute with alexis. >> good morning, mike. i had to use my wipers a few times this morning as well. that being said, the pavement is mostly dry as we get the commute started. we do have a rollover crash already, though. this is in the fairfield area. westbound 80 around the state route 12 merge. a solo vehicle collision that rolled over, landed on its wheels on the shoulder. not a big blocking issue. no delays approaching that scene. i am keeping an eye on that. they have not cleared that vehicle yet. sounds like minor injuries to the driver. a quick check of the east bay. here's a look at walnut creek.
