and that is without in the windchill. >> that's ridiculous. the system has been extremely brutal as we know blamed for 15 deaths. the snow is still coming down this morning in some areas. so it the not over yet. abc's whit johnson is starting us off in upstate new york, good morning, whit. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. this lake-effect snow not letting up. take a look at the park here. the trees, everything, completely smothered. it's up to my knees as i try to walk through it. some parts of upstate new york getting more than three feet of snow. the deadly polar blast not done yet. this morning, that deep freeze that has claimed the lives of at least 15 people is on the move. whiteout conditions a common theme on northeastern roadways where driving was impossible. we've pulled over the car to the side of the road to wait it out. take a look in front of us. that's all you see, nothing but snow falling at a rate of 2 to 3

inches per hour. north of syracuse, highways littered with vehicles sliding off the road, stuck in thick snow. drivers left stranded everywhere you turned. in paterson, new jersey, the polar blast freezing that town's great falls. a driver badly injured when ice from a vehicle several cars in front flew off and into the truck's windshield. the temps being felt across the midwest. the chicago river now a thick block of ice as the city passes the 80-hour mark in these treacherous conditions. in cedar rapids, iowa, police telling abc news they responded to more than 50 accidents in the city on thursday. watch as an out-of-control car slides right into a police suv. the officers had been directing traffic for a different accident when the driver hit them. take a look at the consistency of this snow. as it hits the ground. it's light and fluffy here. but with these sub zero wi

new york city, i'll be standing here on monday at 53 degrees. so major improvements coming but, of course, there's a whole slew of things that happen with that which i'll have in a bit. >> of course you're tracking it all. we're going to move on to washington now. and new developments in the russia investigation. president trump overnight told "the new york times" he's been assured by the deputy attorney general he's not a subject or a target of the investigation. he's also touting new reports he did not receive calls from his son don jr. before that infamous trump tower meeting with russians. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning. those calls involve blocked numbers leaving some democrats in congress to openly question whether donald trump jr. was communicating with his father just before and after that meeting at trump tower with the russians. three sources familiar with the matter have told abc news those calls were actually between donald trump jr. and two family friends, nascar ceo brian france and real estate developer howard lorber. both men have close ties to president trump and actively supported his campaign. jooefr night, the president clearly feeling vindicated,

tweeting -- just out. the big deal, very mysterious don jr. telephone calls after the innocent trump tower meeting that the media and dems said were made to me, his father, were just conclusively found not to be made to me. they were made to friends and business associates of don. really sad. a quick response from the president, george. >> quick response from the president and from democrats as well. they had been touting the possibility those were calls to president trump but democrats are not done investigating here. >> reporter: no, house intelligence committee chairman adam schiff said he's still not convinced and continue to look into whether donald trump jr. ever told his father about that meeting. george? >> and, pierre, in the meantime, the president telling "the new york times" that the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein has assured him he's not a subject or a target of the mueller investigation. >> reporter: well, that is interesting news because we still have not seen the final report but, again, so far none of the allegations from mueller have involved allegations of a conspiracy involving the president so far, george. >> okay, pierre thomas, thanks very much. cecilia. >> you just mentioned the president gave a new interview to "the new york times" and in

it, he is slamming congress' border wall talks as a waste of time, even though those talks are just getting under way. terry moran joins us from the white house. he is also giving us a pretty head-spinning contradiction about his national security leader saying they were misquoted even though the world saw this public testimony play out on live tv. >> reporter: you're right, cecilia. there's no question. good morning to you. the president is on tear in this new interview. he's going after the media, of course. he always does that. he's threatening the congressional negotiators with declaring a national emergency. and he's determined throughout to present his version of reality. overnight in a wide-ranging interview with "the new york times," president trump trashed the crucial ongoing negotiations in congress over border security that began after his backdown on the shutdown. >> i think it's a waste of time. >> reporter: and he hinted strongly that he's going to take action himself to get that border wall. >> i've set the table. i've set the stage for doing what i'm going to do.

favor, including earlier in his political career when he referenced a person he called an alleged drug dealer, he called this person t-bone. but several reports say t-bone wasn't an actual person, but rather a composite of people booker had met. we know in the coming weeks senator booker will be in iowa, south carolina and new hampshire, george. getting out there early and to important state. >> watching him in the senate and, tom, thanks very much. he will sit down with the ladies of "the view" later this morning and you can watch it here on abc. now to that breaking news overnight, that missing tennessee teen found safe nearly 700 miles from home in wisconsin. erielle reshef joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning after that nearly three-week search that spanned more than four states, a missing girl found. but now a chilling break in that case. the teen's adoptive father arrested for sexual assault. we're now concealing the girl's identity as authorities say she could be a victim. this morning a 14-year-old is safe three weeks after she mysteriously vanished from her

ten -- tennessee home, bringing an end to a desperate multistate search. and now a major twist in the case. just days after pleading here on "gma" for her safe return -- >> we want you to come home. >> reporter: -- the girl's adoptive father randall pruitt now arrested on sexual assault charges. >> did she leave out of her own will, fleeing from a bad home situation? >> we believe so. >> reporter: authorities discovering the teen in wisconsin, nearly 700 miles from her family's farm. >> she's in good health. she's safe. she's warm. she's been fed. that's a very good ending to this, as far as we're concerned. >> reporter: now, so authorities say that the girl had relatives in wisconsin but they're not saying who she was with when she was discovered. according to investigators more arrests are likely in this case. but the good news is she is safe. she is cared for. >> yep, that's the best news. let's turn to that stunning new report in the catholic church abuse scandal. texas identifying nearly 300 priests and clergymen credibly

accused of sexual abuse. abc's linsey davis is here with more. this goes back to 1941. >> reporter: yes, cecilia. we are talking about 286 priests and clergymen going back decades. this one is of the largest collection of names to be released after that one in pennsylvania last year, which detailed seven decades of abuse by more than 300 predator priests in that state. at least 70 catholic dioceses have come forward with credibly accused priests. during a press conference on thursday, the president of a survivors network, tim lennon, himself a survivor of abuse, says that the church needs to do more. >> the church needs to reach out to every parish, every community, every victim and offer comfort, support, and help. it's not enough just to release names. >> reporter: according to one analysis more than 6,800 u.s. catholic priests have been credibly accused. and there are at least 19,000 survivors. the head of the archdiocese of

galveston in houston issued a statement saying they decided to release the names now because it is right and just and to offer healing and hope to those who have suffered. and went on to offer his sincerest apology. george? >> still so much to reckon with. thanks very much. we get the latest on "empire" star jussie smollett. his family speaking out about the late night incident that left smollett with bruises and a cord around his neck, as police ask for anyone with information about it to come forward. abc's alex perez is in chicago with the story. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. there are about a dozen detectives that are working this case. this neighborhood has countless cameras but authorities say they have not been able to track down any video of the attack. >> it's a horrendous, terrible thing. a cowardly thing, to be quite frank. >> reporter: this morning, chicago police providing details about jussie smollett's attack. >> we have no reason to think he's not telling us the truth.

>> reporter: police say up released surveillance video shows an unsettling image of the "empire" star. >> we did see him with a noose around his neck. i can tell you that. he was battered and bruised. >> reporter: overnight, his family breaking their silence to support the actor and directly ard those doubting his story. we want to be clear this is a racial and homophobic hate crime. jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. his story has never changed. the president weighing in from the oval office. >> that i can tell you is horrible. i've seen it last night. i think that's horrible. >> reporter: the pair seen walking along new street in the general area where smollett says he was assaulted. the actor told investigators that at about 2:00 a.m. he was heading home from this subway sandwich shop when he was attacked by two men.

i've never seen that before. >> a lot of animals in peril this morning. >> they call that one northern canadian problems. we move to that drama surrounding the super bowl halftime show. adam levine spoke out in a new interview overnight, addressing criticism of maroon 5's decision to take the stage at the super bowl on sunday. abc's t.j. holmes there in atlanta. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning to you, george, and they've been criticized from the moment that it was announced that maroon 5 would be the halftime show performance. but their new round of criticism came this week when the halftime press conference for the performance was cancelled. a lot of people saw that as really a way for them to dodge kaepernick questions, but adam levine now says that cancellation was not their decision. adam levine is speaking out about the controversy surrounding his band's decision to perform at the super bowl halftime show. >> no one thought about it more than i did. no one put more thought and love into this than i did. i silenced all the noise, listened to myself, and made my

decision based upon how i felt. >> reporter: the maroon 5 front man tells "entertainment tonight" he expected the backlash. >> i'm not in the right profession if i can't handle a little bit of controversy. it's what it is. we expected it. we'd like to move on from it. and, like i said earlier, speak through the music. >> reporter: when asked why the band canceled their traditional pregame press conference, levine says it was the league's decision to pull the plug. >> the nfl canceled the press conference. you'll have to speak with them. >> reporter: the grammy award-winner seems to hint that the halftime show would acknowledge the critics of his decision to perform despite the nfl's handling of colin kaepernick and players' rights to protest. >> i'd like to think that people know where i stand as a human being after two decades of doing this. so what i would say is, you know, look, we're going to keep doing what we're doing hopefully without becoming politicians to make people understand, we got you. >> reporter: this on the heels of kaepernick's attorney mark geragos calling out the halftime show performers including maroon 5, travis scott and big boi for

crossing what he calls a picket line by choosing to perform. now social media is buzzing about ways the performers could find to pay tribute to kaepernick. one user saying make a statement on the stage, not for you but for the people. on facebook, pink floyd's roger waters calls on the performers to take a knee on stage in full sight. over 100,000 people have signed a change.org petition urging the same. and, george, controversy for the halftime show is not something new. remember last year justin timberlake in minneapolis, criticism for whether or not he should include a hologram of prince in his performance. the year before that, lady gaga, after the inauguration of donald trump, how political should she be? but this is the first time, george, it's unique that the nfl is at the center of the halftime controversy. >> yeah, they are at the center and also colin kaepernick at the center and his attorney, mark geragos joins us. right now. mark, you just heard what adam levine said about why he's doing what he's doing. he wants the music to speak for

johnson in pulaski, new york. good morning, whit. >> reporter: it has been snowing like this all morning long, relentless. it just hasn't stopped. this prompting a winter storm warning and a windchill advisory. some parts of upstate new york getting more than three feet of snow as exhausted residents continue to dig out. this morning, that deep freeze that has claimed the lives of at least 15 people is on the move. whiteout conditions, a common theme on northeastern roadways where driving was impossible. take a look in front of us. that's all you see, nothing snow falling at a rate of two to three inches per hour. a state worker in new hampshire badly injured when ice from a vehicle five cars in front flew off and into the truck's windshield. the bone-chilling temps felt across the midwest. the chicago river now a thick block of ice in these treacherous conditions. in cedar rapids, iowa, watch as an out-of-control car slides right into a police suv. the officers had been directing traffic for a different accident when the driver hit them.
