a soggy saturday. live doppler 7 shows us the rain and you can see the green on the screen indicating where that precip is falling right now. the front moving through on this saturday morning. thanks for joining us. it's february 2nd. i'm chris nguyen. let's get right to meteorologist lisa argen who's tracking the conditions where you live. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris, it's going to remain quite damp and breezy behind the front as we see scattered showers throughout the day. we've got a 2 on our storm impact scale. gustier winds will continue. downpours moving through by the evening hours with an additional quarter to half inch of rain and the possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon. you'll notice in san francisco we've got some light showers over into the east bay, some heavier rain in the hills there east of hayward, highway 880 is wet. by san quentin, 580, you can see

the peninsula some spotty showers and into the south bay and santa cruz mountains it remains damp with the light rain. mt. tam, more rain is coming down with low to mid-50s so it continues even behind the cold front. here is the view from sutro where gusty winds are allowing for the camera to shake. you can see the low visibility. 54 in napa and livermore. the concern today will be for hydroplaning, localize flooding, looking at the possibilities of power outages, that winds warning until 10:00. those streams may be coming up over their banks. we are looking at the flash flood watch into clear lake and ukiah throughout the morning hours. the rest of the bay area, a coastal flood watch through noon. also looking at the winds. we've talked about those. they have been gusty. maybe not quite as gusty as we were forecasting, but still anywhere from 20 to 25 miles an hour from the east bay and the south bay. go up about 1,000 feet in height

and we've got the winds from 40 to perhaps near 50 miles an hour. we've got 65-mile-an-hour wind gusts over the east bay early this morning. we're in the 50s and we'll continue to stay in the mid and upper 50s with scattered showers through 2:00. then by 5:00, 6:00, more rain gets organized, it becomes widespread. we'll see those downpours. if you have evening plans tonight, saturday night looks soggy, it looks breezy, and we'll add in the totals. but it looks like supgd sunday is looking a bit brighter. we could see some snow on our local hills. chris. >> as lisa said, the rain continues to fall, the wind is also an issue. we saw a lot of activity in the north bay earlier this morning an that's where we finding abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard who is live in novato for us. some spots are seeing a break in the rain for now but the roads remain slick. , you sd, morningor iv chris, i n rainas bnle, a aig .

we're off highway 101 near ignacio boulevard where traffic is pretty much at the limit right now, but, you know, just a short time ago it certainly was not. this morning we saw lots of accidents related to the storm. the chp escorting traffic around a spinout near atherton avenue on highway 101 in novato. this pickup truck struck the center divider. the condition of the driver is unknown. the rain was torrential overnight. it was pouring for hours, making driving downright dangerous. lots of hidden patches of flooding to make hydroplaning a possibility. many people thought the rain would never end. >> i have a thin ceiling, so i could hear it coming down pretty good. we have a lot oldtrees, so branches and such fall. >> reporter: the storm has also caused some pnocoty. large tree bringing down power lines on bohemian highway this morning.

pg&e and fire crews are on scene to remove that tree from the roadway and assess the damage. lots of people are also without power up in sonoma county. the marin chp taking to twitter, asking people to please drive carefully. the rain will continue through the day and roads will be slick. it will be dangerous, so take it easy out there. live in marin county, novato, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> we're also keeping an eye on conditions in the south bay. the city of san jose starts winter preparations in the summer so they have been getting ready. right now the san jose department of transportation has about 20 crews standing by to respond to any potential flooding or downed trees and power lines. in other parts of the south bay, one los gatos resident isn't taking any chances. his home suffered flooding in thlike two weeks ago in the big

storm, my property, i live up in los gatos, it was flashing and flashing under the house. we dig it out and put some tarp, i put concrete all the way around. >> nearly 20 sandbag stations are spread across the south bay. they're open 24/7 and we have a list of those locations on our website, abc7news.com. in the east bay residents are dealing with power outages. this is what it looked like in fremont last night where power lines tangled with tree limbs. several pg&e trucks were on kimbrough street. neighbors say the power lines sparked as the wind whipped the limbs, so they called 911. >> the neighbor called to tell me that she thought it was the box on the line in the backyard that was sparking. and so i came down and looked and it was -- looks like two power lines were hitting each other within a tree. as it did, it just sparkled like

fireworks. >> for now there are no reports of damage to any property there. you can check for outages online with pg&e's interactive map. in the north bay officials have closed the manzanita park and ride in mill valley. that area sees plenty of flooding during storms. the health and wellness camp in san rafael set up a severe weather emergency shelter. the shelter has food and space for 80 people to sleep. >> people can check in as the storm is present and affecting the areas they may be inhabiting. the creeks, the rivers and such. there will be a shuttle taking them to st. vinny's for breakfast if they'd like. or leaving on their own. >> marin county is urging residents to sign up for alert marin to make sure you get texts or calls with critical information during the storm. officials expect strong winds to knock down trees and power lines throughout the county. taking a look at sfo where

the windy weather is proving to be a headache for some travelers this morning. flights have beenen't any circle cancelled so far only three have about cancelled at oakland and san jose. if you were planning to drive to tahoe, just don't. travel to the sierra is not advised. conditions there are messy and dangerous. chains are required on interstate 80 from placer county to nevada county. a winter storm warning is in effect through monday. you can always track the rain and check the weather conditions where you live with the abc 7 news app. enable push alerts to get the latest news as it happens. with all this rain you're probably not thinking about the drought, but others are. this issue is part of our commitment to building a better bay area, focusing on problems that affect our quality of life, like the environment. look at the side-by-side comparison. last week is on the left, this week is on the right. the amount of california that's not in drought went from about 8% to nearly 24%. water officials are still urging residents to adopt a

conservation lifestyle. the santa clara valley water district has launched a new rebate program to help with those efforts. some people dread the rain, but paul bame of san jose isn't one of them. >> the same water that is coming down on our roof be the one that goes into the plants to help them grow. >> knowing that the storm was coming our way, he installed this rain barrel on his family's property. >> it took me a few days. and i won't tell you that it was completely all fun, but it was a good challenge. >> customers can cash in on the rain as part of the landscape rebate program. >> it was a boost, an incentive to go out and do it soon as opposed to putting it off. >> rain barrels, rain gardens and cisterns which can keep rainwater onsite for the landscape is eligible for a rebate. old a fantast

your roof or the clouds above us. >> in this case he received a $35 rebate for installing this 50-gallon rain barrel. he paid just over $100 on the materials and installation and hopes to recoup the cost in water savings in the next couple of years. >> you may not see a huge benefit to the environment, i may not see it, but by using less water we have actually more water for wildlife, for fish in the rivers and streams. >> the district says it should have enough funding to cover every customer who qualifies for the program. >> spring water works miracles in the garden. so i'm glad to be recycling the water that was part of that miracle. >> almost all of the bay area counties have suggestions for harvesting rainwater. some also provide rebates. we have links to that information on our website, abc7news.com.

the problem. >> reporter: pebble beach is where the rich and famous come to play golf. it sits directly on the california shoreline, just steps from some of the most environmentally sensitive waters on the west coast. but look below the surface here and this is what you'll likely find, thousands of golf balls. >> seeing the sea floor completely covered in trash, it was like a straight shot to the heart. >> reporter: the carmel coast has been part of alex weber's life since she could walk. her dad took her diving for the first time when she was 15 and she was stunned by what she found. >> it was incredible. we would go out and dive and pick up 2500 golf balls. two weeks later we'd pick up another 2500 to 3,000 golf balls. >> reporter: as alex picked them up, she wondered just how many golf balls are there >> the more we researched, the more we discovered that it's a completely foreign topic. no one has ever looked at golf balls under the ocean. >> she sent me an e-mail saying she had read some of the papers, scieific artics atame

out of my ph.d. work. >> reporter: alex teamed up wit just how big the problem is. >> it's so rubbery. i said, you know, why don't we put together a report and try and publish a scientific article of your own that actually states the scope of the problem, the intensity of the problem and what we can do about the problem. >> reporter: with matthew overseeing her research, alex went to work collecting golf balls in the ocean and on the beach near three coastal golf courses, carefully sorting them by their condition. >> we start with something like this with the polyurethane shell and the gloss. as it breaks down, it loses the gloss, it loses the paint, it loses the shell. >> reporter: over time the balls roll around on the ocean floor and break into pieces. >> this rubber band that's in this golf ball, there's 275 yards of it and that will continue to unravel and get tangled up in the kelp and its buoyant so it sits on the surface of the ocean. >> reporter: alex found that the balls had been deteriorating for decades. pebble beach has been a golf

course since 1919. >> and so it's not the problem of golf balls are constantly being hit into the ocean and refilling these spots, it's that there's 100 years of golf ball pollution out there and that that pollution is continuing to wear down. >> reporter: that waste could potentially impact wildlife, including fish, the california sea otter and endangered species, sea lions and coastal birds who may eat tiny pieces of plastic. >> there's not a lot of study done on the chemical compounds that are in golf balls and how that might affect organisms that are consuming this material. because again, until alex had really discovered this problem and looked into it in really great detail, no one had really studied this problem and its potential effects at all. seriously, how do you think this happens? >> reporter: after two years of work, alex and matthew just published their scientific paper that concluded most of the balls came from pebble beach. they found more than 35,000 in the water right off the golf course. when alex added those balls to ones collected in the same area

by the monterey bay national marine sanctuary and pebble beach corporation, the total found went up to more than 50,000 golf balls. collected approximately 20,000 additional golf balls. >> reporter: pebble beach says it's taking action. >> the fact there were so many accumulated offshore in certain locations was new to us. unless somebody dove in that area and brought it to our attention, we didn't know. >> reporter: pebble beach is telling caddies and golfers to make sure their golf balls stay on the course and out of the ocean. they have worked with the monterey bay national marine sanctuary and monterey aquarium to identify key areas to clean up. >> we now have a collection planned 18 times this year to 11 separate locations, so almost 200 separate dives, and pick up golf balls that are accidentally hit into the ocean. >> reporter: the marine sanctuary has agreed to work closely with the golf course to make sure the cleanup is done right. >> we're going to be looking

over their shoulder the whole time. >> reporter: the sanctuary lifon coast. >> it's been very interesting to get to the bottom of the golf ball issue and realize that there could be other areas on the coast that we need to take a look at. >> reporter: alex will be heading to uc santa barbara soon to study marine ecology. she's excited to see her hard work turn into action. >> golf courses should be responsible for picking up these balls. >> reporter: the california coastal commission tells us plastic golf balls into the ocean is not acceptable. they're looking at all options to clean them up and to keep it from happening. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. good morning to you. post frontal showers and also looking at scattered downpours. live doppler 7 right now taking you into the east bay around 80. we're looking at the wet weather. further south a bit of a break from san leandro, but it's pretty soggy with light rain

from dublin to 680, and the hills looking at the heavier rain from fremont boulevard to milpitas. back westward along the peninsula and the south bay, saratoga, it's pretty damp for you, but the heavy rain is here along the coast from mon tara and further south on highway 1, certainly down through pescadero. so the cold front moved through, maybe you were sleeping, and now we're in the scattered shower element. but the rotation here around it shows what's to come. it's an area of low pressure that will move over the bay area by dinner time and we'll see more heavy downpours. we do have rain in the mountains changing over to snow and it is raining all the way down into southern california. it's a 2 on our storm impact scale. the rest of the day today will feature breezy winds, a quarter of an inch to half inch of rain additionally. you can see the wind vane there blowing. winds are gusting to 30 miles an

hour here to about 40. you can see the rain moving across the screen there. 52 san francisco and san jose and walnut creek. a few peeks of sun here. looking at the current wind gusts from 7 miles an hour at the san carlos airport up to 20 to 25 miles an hour along the coast and the livermore valley. but you go up to about 1,000 feet and there through about 3,000 feet were 30 to 40 miles an hour from mt. diablo to the east foothills and mt. tam. the view from sutro, it's foggy, misty and windy conditions. that will last throughout the day. we have a chance of a thunderstorm and heavier rain tonight. the cold sector of the storm arriving tomorrow into monday and low snow levels locally. so 11:00 today we've got spotty showers. this continues throughout the mid-afternoon. and then by 5:00, 6:00, more rain pushing along the coast over the entire bay. if you have plans tonighte'

look for the rainfall totals to be additionally anywhere from about a tenth to an inch from ben lomond. this is 10:00 today through 11:30 tonight. we'll keep the breeze with us but the high wind warning will expire about 10:00, but the win will continue anywhere from 10 to 25 miles an hour along the coast. this is through tonight and the afternoon hours so it's going to be breezy and wet. the winter storm warning continues throughout the weekend into monday and tuesday. this is going to change over into snow. right now it is 36 degrees in the mountains with light rain. snow level at about 6,000 feet. once it changes over, it will all be snow and we'll be measuring it from 5 to 8 feet possible here. also an avalanche warning in the mountains as well. so highs today underneath the clouds, a few peeks of sun. scattered showers, perhaps some downpours, windy conditions.

storm has moved through but not the second half, that is going to be later on tonight. in between we're stuck with scattered showers, maybe heavy downpours and gusty winds. an additional quarter to half inch of rain possible along with scattered thunderstorms. that's a 2 on our storm impact scale. you can see the heaviest rain is in the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. as we go into south city 280, you've got some light rain there. higher elevations east of fremont a pretty good downpour. into campbell and los altos hills some very light rain. morgan hill and gilroy looking at a few heavier pockets. you can see the break from the golden gate bridge with those puffy cumulus clouds. that will be an unstable atmosphere, low 50s right now throughout the afternoon. and the drops on the lens with temperatures from the low 50s in petaluma, 54 in livermore. still have a coastal flood advisory through noon but the flash flood watch has been lifted because heavier downpours will come in later on tonight. so we'll look for that around

9:00. in between now and then, it's still breezy to gusty, 22 to 25-mile-an-hour winds from oakland to livermore, out of the south, and upper elevations we're up to 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts from mt. diablo to the east foothills. throughout the 10:00 hour, cloudy, scattered showers, upper 50s. by 2:00 we still have a few showers, but the bulk of the afternoon looking at the scattered showers. by 6:00, 7:00, they begin to increase in coverage. by 10:00, 11:00 they're more widespread and we're looking at isolated downpours along with those gusty winds as the area of low pressure moves overhead. so we still have the actual low to move in tonight and we're going to talk about a drier sunday and time out that rain for you, including the totals, coming up in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. the steady rain is causing problems throughout the bay area.

>> pretty floody. we haven't got flooding in the yards yet, but we flooded a couple of years ago, so we're hoping we don't get it this year. >> reporter: luckily his home did not flood. the storm has also caused some problems up in sonoma county. a large tree went down, also bringing power lines down on bohemian highway this morning. pg&e and fire crews are on scene to remove that tree from the roadway and assess the damage. the marin chp, in fact the chp across the bay area making sure that everyone stays safe. certainly the rain has -- is not over and the danger is not over either. roads are still very slick. if you are traveling anywhere today, please take it easy. live in the north bay in novato, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thanks for that live report, cornell. there are some outages in parts of the bay area this morning. according to pg&e, 335 customers are without power in the north bay.

618 in santa cruz and nearly 2,000 customers are in the dark in the east bay. yosemite has announced the possibility of road closures because of the storm. highways 120, 41 and 140 could all close over the next several days. the park service says yosemite will remain open. caltrans has temporarily closed highway 1 in the big sur area. the road will be closed at paul's slide in the north and mud creek in the south. those sections of the highway are particularly prone to rock falls and mudslides. the area near mud creek was just reopened in july after a massive mudslide in 2017. caltrans says it will update the status of the highway on monday. in the south bay, heavy rain is falling in the santa cruz mountains. some people started preparing yesterday, stocking up on food. abc 7 news reporter david louie rted caninstm btsack in june, debris like this that clogs them and leads to flooding. so do pumps that stop working at underpasses when the power goes

out. this spot along santa clara street near sap center is a known problem area. >> a lot of the pump stations have backup power, but we are able to provide portable pumps in areas where there are concerns. if something like that happened, we'd obviously have a lot of coordinating to do, but we have stuff on site able to respond. >> reporter: rick scott of the transportation department has 20 crews standing by to respond as the storm intensifies, but there's a limit to what they can do. >> we can't stop flooding if there's too much water. so at that point our real priority is safety, closing roads, making sure people know not to drive on flooded roads and flooded areas because sometimes we just require time for the water to clear out of an area and make the area safe again. >> reporter: sandbags are available to residents if water encroaches on garages and homes, although no one seemed to be in urgent need of them so far. in the santa cruz mountains which got slammed with the heaviest rainfall, residents are stocking up on food and preparing to be without power. >> i've got a fireplace,

flashlights, candles, the whole bit. >> so you can go for two or three days easily? >> two or three days. but i really can't complain, compared to what they went through in the midwest. i mean geez. >> reporter: rachel survived the 1982 love creek flood and mudslide that took ten lives and destroyed 30 homes. she's getting ready for this storm. >> make a big pot of soup that will last a while before the storm hits. that's pretty much what i do to get ready. >> reporter: some hot soup sounds pretty good about now. san jose will have its crews standing by for the next 24 hours. they'll then ratchet back a little bit but they'll be on standby still because there is always residual damage, trees and slides happening days after a major event. david louie, abc 7 news. >> you can always track the rain and check the weather conditions where you live with the abc 7 news app. enable push alerts to get the latest news as it happens.

developing news out of monterey county. salinas police have confirmed that officers shot a suspect in the parking lot of a safeway store. it happened just after 10:30 last night. police received a call about a person pointing a gun at customers inside of safeway. officers shot the man. he was taken to the hospital. his condition is not known. the five officers who responded to the call were wearing body cameras. the monterey county district attorney's office is currently reviewing that footage. still ahead on "abc 7 mornings," ayesha curry is a chef, wife, mother, spokeswoman and author. now she's adding one more thing to her plate. >> we have kitchen textiles, so aprons, dish towels, oven mits. >> her pop-up store is opening today in oakland. how ayesha says she's handling it all. first, as we head to break, a live look outside from our mt. tamera. you can see it is windy up there in the higher elevations in the bay area. lisa will have your accuweather

good morning to you. our high wind warning and our flash flood watch have been allowed to expire. we still have showers around the bay area starting out in south city around brisbane, just pulling out here moving over the bay waters. 580 is wet, university avenue over in berkeley and emeryville, berma road. taking you further south into the south bay where we have more activity from mt. hamilton, the santa cruz mountains. the yellows are where it's raining, pretty much south of san jose into big sur. a lightning strike right there. the wider perspective shows we are behind the front. the area of low pressure is still to come and we'll get into that tonight with more renewed rain and more gusty winds, but we're sort of in a lull now so it's a 2 on our storm impact scale. we'll have the winds with the downpours later on this evening and an additional quarter inch to half inch when we get that final push of rain probably by 5:00, 6:00, lasting through the evening. we'll see the possibility of

thunderstorms. here's why. you can see with a little sunshine we have that cold air cumulus and the colder air will be moving in behind this system. 52 in san francisco as well as san jose. a pretty shot there. from the golden gate bridge loking at traffic going pretty well, 52 petaluma as well as livermore. so looking at the winds, breezy with the downpours, but right now not bad. anywhere from 10 to 20-mile-an-hour winds. still quite gusty along the coast. san jose a gust to 31 miles an hour. you go up in height and have the 30 to 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts. we'll look for breezy winds throughout the day today. you can see from this vantage point, our sutro tower camera, the camera is shaking a bit. it's cloudy, we do have poor visibility. delays of over two hours at sfo. so we're looking at the rain and wind winding down but still have scattered showers throughout the day, a chance of a thunderstorm and colder air moving in for tomorrow. so tomorrow evening looking at more rain. today, though, let's time it out for you. you've got the scattered showers

11:00. you can see them popping up anywhere around the bay, but not widespread until about 4:00 on the coast. through the 8:00 hour we'll get the downpours and breezy winds accompanying this final push. this is where we have the most unstable air so it may be a little bit of a wild evening. from 10:00 this morning through 11:30 an additional third of an inch in novato as well as fremont with the santa cruz mountains picking up about an inch. so the winds will continue to be breezy to gusty on the coast. as we go through the afternoon, the blue indicates the lighter shading, 15 to 20 miles an hour. it's still going to be a raw and wet day out there. in the mountains, they are skiing but still have the winter weather warning, winter storm warning right on through tuesday. even though the winds are not upwards of 70 and 80 miles an hour, they're still getting the snow, the an snow. so the possibility of shutting
