doesn't always have to be aesthetic. sometimes, it's just mental sanity. don't worry about the status quo, what everybody else is doing, what the new trend is right now. go with what makes you feel good. ♪ my love for fitness started when i was little, little, little, and i used to open up the encyclopedia britannica to the anatomy section and look at the body. and i was like, "i want to learn all about that -- muscles and the tissue and movement." i've been dancing for a really long time. i've been blessed to be able to dance with some great nfl, nba teams in the bay area and in miami and being able to grow my community and the fitness world. i love all different parts of fitness. we're gonna be doing some exercises to tone, lift, and sculpt and tighten up that booty. this little beauty is a mini band that you can travel with anywhere. you can get it at amazon or perform better. great locations to buy from. we're gonna be doing -- show them what you're working with

lunges. get low squats. side shuffle. little exercises, lateral movement, and you didn't know jumping jacks. all right, are we ready to get this party started? [ applause ] welcome today. we're gonna be doing wonderful exercises for that lower body to help tighten, tone, and lift the lower half for any season you're trying to get ready for. i have my team behind me. hey, vanessa. a new friend that we just got to join in -- buddy, stella, and, also, another new friend, javier, that's gonna join us today to show you some great new exercises to use inside or outside. so let's start with that one. the lunge goes back. the right leg goes back. tucking under the pelvis. squeeze right here in that lower abdomen. knee drive up. this is progression one, right? option two -- knee drive up. bring it back. give you that donkey kick back. bring that knee back up. take it back into that lunge. show me a few reps on your own.

remember to breathe. working on balance. working on that standing leg. fall back into a lunge. reset that pelvis. tuck under, squeeze. belly button in. hands come up, either on the hips with prayer. little pulses down. little pulses down. where do you feel that burn, stella? >> oh, my glutes. >> that's right. javier -- new friend. new friend, boo. come on! everything's ready. sassy pants, what are we doing? what are we doing? 4, 3, 2, and 1. good job. can i get a what? >> what? >> can i get a boom? >> boom. >> can i get a pow? >> pow. >> let's get this party started. exercise number two -- sumo squat with som nice, wide straddle, right? turn those heels in. toes out. hands on the hips. prayer or out -- whatever makes you feel comfortable. deep, deep, deep sumo squats, please. always stay connected to your core. all right, option number two. you want to get a little sassy-fancy with it.

final exercise will be a combo of two -- "they don't know" jumping jacks with a nice side shuffle. let's start with the "they don't know." the reason why they don't know -- because this band is involved. keep that band right where it is, right? jumping jacks, basic. come on, come on. out and in, out and in. if you want a better burn, lower that band, just like this. a little lower, and it will intensify that burn. when they get a little sassy, that's when you know you're doing your job. let's go -- 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. the most rewarding part of being in the fitness industry is the community. there is nothing like connecting with individuals from all different walks of life and all different backgrounds and having something in common, and fitness really does increase your sense of self-confidence, pride in yourself, your self-love. and once you start to feel that energy, you start to share that with people around you. it's all about building community and having a great time while you work out. >> coming up, getting healthier

>> please drive the highlighted route. ♪ >> i help people learn the tools and the resources that they need to be able to go out into the world and live their healthiest life. if you want to get healthier, start one step at a time. just put one foot in front of the other. it's not a race. ♪ i am a strength-conditioning coach. i started out as an athletic trainer in san diego at ucsd, and from there i just kind of moved into the gym scene. and, then, when i moved to san francisco, i went to bauman college to get certified as a nutrition consultant, so now i incorporate all of those together. so, mostly in a gym setting, people come because they, number one, want to lose weight, or at this place, sometimes we get people who want to gain muscle. so either of those two things, there's a hierarchy of needs that has to be met, and the first one generally is nutrition. but when people think about nutrition, they think about all the things that they want to

change or all the things that are possible to change and because of that try to do multiple things all at once. and when people try to change more than one thing at a time, their percentage of success goes down pretty greatly. so what i help them do is figure out the thing that's gonna make the biggest impact for them, but it's the smallest change relative to their life. varying degrees of quality for protein powders. lots of times, we consider all of the things that they want to change. number one, we need to find an emotional connection to why they want to create the change. and so the deeper we get, the more of an emotional root they have to wanting to reach that goal. and so when you tap into the emotional aspect of it once you're in what's called the grind, right, which is like, "i'm doing this thing. i have to keep doing it. it's getting kind of boring. i'm losing interest." you can come back to that emotional attachment and really, like, the depth of why you want to create this change for yourself.

yeah? okay, now, why is this important to you? >> i'm getting older. i turned 36 in a couple weeks, and... >> there's, like, a set of six things that are really critical. so, generally, we'll just move down the list of things, and you can check off like, "yep, i do that. yep, i do that. ooh, i could use some work in that area." and so on and so forth. so, very quickly, our list is drink enough water, eat colorful vegetables, get enough protein -- and we generally talk about what that means for that specific person. include healthy fats, minimize sugar, and eat responsibly. so, when i ask, "oh, great. you want to lose 20 pounds. why is that?" and, then, they'll give me a reason -- "because i want to look better." and i say, "okay, great. why do you want to look better?" and then they'll give me an answer -- "because i feel like when i look better, i'm more confident." "okay, great. why do you want to be more confident?" so it's this series of asking why to get to the fifth, sixth, to the seventh answer, which is generally the more emotional

attachment that they have to wanting to reach that goal. see, we got a shark here. so, dan john, who's a really highly respected strength and conditioning coach, introduced me to this concept of shark habits and pirate maps. >> there's your shark. >> you can break habits up into two categories. the shark habit -- when the shark comes in, it bites once, and the thing is done. so, those examples are setting a dentist appointment or answering a phone call or paying a parking ticket or something that only happens once. it's not something that you have to do continually, right? lots of times, when we think of health, a pirate map is you have a point "a" and a point "b," and the point "b" is the buried treasure, right? so, like, what is the shortest distance to get from where you are to what you want? everything else is in the water with the shark, right? so it's just like take care of it as it comes, but don't dwell on that thing. like, get rid of it, get it off your plate, and then move on to the thing that's really important, which is the treasure

at the end of the pirate map. okay? >> let's go with... >> most common problem is they don't know where to start, 'cause they've tried -- you know, almost everybody has tried this diet or that diet or this approach or that thing, but it's so many different changes all at once. so really, like, breaking it into bite-size pieces and just focusing on one thing is really helpful in creating mastery so that you can move on to the next thing. i love it when people feel like they're empowered to lead themselves forward. i want to give everything that i can to a person who's, like, you know, ready to accept so that they have all of the tools that they need to go out into the world and, like, live the rest of their life in a healthful, meaningful way. >> coming up, healthy snacking is easier than you think. >> kids, grown-ups -- you get hungry, you grab the jar, you get a little handful, and it's just a really nourishing snack.

♪ >> hey, everyone. welcome back to "bay area life." we're about ready to head out to our next location. but first, what better way to get a view of what's behind you than with the multi-angle rearview camera? check this out. it's got three different views. there's normal, top-down, or wide. ♪ >> so, i'm a san francisco mom. i have three kids. i'm a freelance food writer, cookbook author. i write a blog called mom's kitchen handbook. and i've been a registered dietician for a really long time and writing, and, then, when i started having kids, i decided to take time off from work and be a full-time parent. so when it was time for me to start working again, i sort of brought together my passion for cooking and nutrition with my know-how around kids in the kitchen. ♪ people think of healthy food as

something that's really difficult to pull off, and i want to show you a handful of ideas for really healthy, kid-friendly, fun snacks that adults will love just as well. this is one of those snacks that everybody loves, and it's basically like a diy trail mix, and you get to have total control over what goes in there. so, i just pull out of my pantry all the different kind of nuts and seeds. i have whole-grain cereal. i have some pretzels here. and it's kind of fun, 'cause the kids can just come along and just kind of pick and choose what they like and come up with their own little trail mix. so it looks like that, and, then, what's nice is you can also do it like this, in a little to-go container so that your kids can grab it on the way out the door. and, then, often, this is what i'll have on-hand -- a bigger jar. kids, grown-ups -- you get hungry, you grab the jar, you get a little handful, and it's just a really nourishing snack. so, this is one of my favorite super-healthy snacks. just three ingredients. also works great for breakfast and great for lunch.

and, so, all i've got here is a whole-wheat tortilla and some peanut butter. you can use really any nut or seed butter you like. so you just make a nice layer here. and then you've got your banana. i have spent my life peeling bananas this way, when really, it's much easier to go from this end. so you just peel your banana down, and you set it on your tortilla and then just roll it on up. ♪ and you can cut it in half, like this, or you can cut it into little kind of nuggets. one of my favorite snacks is yogurt. the problem with yogurt is a lot of the store-bought yogurts are full of sugar and sometimes artificial ingredients, so my preference is to buy just plain greek yogurt and do all the sweetening and flavoring myself. so i'm gonna show you one of my favorite ways to do that.

i'm gonna make a little yogurt sundae. and so i've got an ice-cream scoop. kids always think it's sort of fun. and these are actually just two different fruits that i pulled from my freezer. these are wild, frozen blueberries that i've defrosted, and, then, these are frozen raspberries defrosted. and they're loaded with fiber and antioxidants. and, then, really, whatever kind of nuts or seeds or coconut you have you can add as a topping, like that. and, then, this is where the sweetening comes in. i usually add just a little bit of maple syrup or a little bit of honey, and, then, you've got this pretty, little yogurt sundae. parents are always looking for ways to get vegetables into their kids, and i'm gonna show you a really easy way to do that, starting with some store-bought hummus. and i've roasted a sweet potato. so, this went into the oven at 400 degrees until it was super tender. you can see how easy this is to slice open. and all you do is take a spoon and scoop the flesh of that sweet potato into a food

processor, add 1 cup of the hummus, the juice of half of a lemon. and if you like a little bit of heat, a teaspoon of sriracha. and, then, after just about 30 seconds in the cuisinart, you have this super-nutrient-rich dip that's loaded with all the nutrients of sweet potatoes, and kids tenderly love it. everybody loves food on a stick, and this takes that sort of fun idea and makes it a little bit healthier. so, what i've got here is some english cucumber, which i'm just gonna slice. and these are nice because you don't have to peel or seed them. and i'm gonna take a little skewer and start with our little cucumber. and then you can really add whatever veggies you want. i've got some cherry tomatoes. this is some cubed sharp cheddar, but you could use, like, those little mozzarella balls. and then i've got a whole-grain bagel, and then just keep building your little kebab until you have a really nice, little snack. so these are just some of my favorite ideas, but it's really

about what works for you. and the more you can get your kids involved i think the better, and just relying on real, whole ingredients, you're halfway there. ♪ ♪ >> coming up, how resistance is all you need for the u workout. >> we're working both ways, so we're getting double the work in.

>> what's going on, everybody? mario d'ambrosio here. welcome to kinetic playground. ♪ ♪ so, when you hear playgrounds, you know, you're stressed out in school. you're stressed out at work. you have these presentations. you have homework. you have all these things. but when it's recess, you get to go hit the playground, it's a place to just go do you. >> that's it. >> so, i mean, it all started young, you know, playing sports all my life. i went to de la salle high school, learned so much from there, had such great mentors. but the thing that really allowed me to understand who i was and where i was going with my life was a major injury back in college, portland state. snapped my right knee in half last game of the season. they said, "you know, we're gonna have to amputateit aty, ae gonna have to do immediate surgery." i was like, "you know, just let me get five minutes.

i need to see what my life's gonna be like now, what it's gonna look like in the future so i could better prepare myself when i wake up." so i wake up. first thing i said to the nurse was that "i have my leg." she goes, "yes, you do. but don't get too excited, 'cause the doctor said you have a 10% to 20% chance of walking again." so i laid back down on the bed, and i said, "well, i have my leg. i have one chance. i'm walking. i got to play with my kids someday. i got to play. i got to teach people the way to get back." so, not everything's engaged. legs are straight. we're nice and tight. our thing here at kp is really, it's not about reps. it's about really tuning in. that's what this knee really taught me, 'cause i still have no feeling in it. so just understanding how to really listen to what worked for you, so we take you through the right steps of really engaging. so, when you can really listen to what your needs are, that's when you're gonna become more successful. so, we're gonna show you some kinetic exercises. ♪ so, what we're gonna do, we'll go ahead and get on our forearms in a plank. so go ahead and match me. so, let's make sure that our forearms are nice and flat.

a lot of people will just be putting pressure down on their elbows. let's imagine squeezing those elbows together. that's gonna get everything recruited in the core. now, from here, let's go nice and high. use the obliques on the bottom to [inhales] lift and contract. and we're gonna lift with that bottom oblique, keeping those elbows nice and engaged. nice, guys, yeah. it's okay for the butt to be high here, 'cause we want to lift that extra weight through those obliques. and we're gonna try to tap the booty down. if it doesn't get down, all good. it's all about engagement and efficiency. so just keep breathing. >> slide it. >> yes, you got it. you know you got it. nice rotation. efficiency. you don't need a ton of reps. you don't need to kill yourself. let the body do the work. perfect. and relax. nice, guys. ♪ all right. here we go. so here comes the back-and-forth ball toss. so, what we're gonna do, we're gonna be working the booty, the core, the quads, the groin -- everything. so, what we want to do, we're gonna be nice and bent over. balls out in front. we're gonna try to find a nice, little rhythm, nice, little cane. so we're gonna go back and forth. we're gonna start nice and slow.

[ exhaling sharply ] and then we're gonna pick up the speed. it's all about the catch. keeping the body still, flat. engage. we want the heels drilling, knees tight, core tight. everything's constantly recruiting, getting everything where it needs to be. so, at home, if you have a bag of flour, you're on the tile or the hardwood, put a towel down, you can pull it, push it, pull it, push it. yeah, five seconds. 5, 4, 3, 2. love it. >> yee-hoo! >> don't. ah, ah! ♪ >> all right, so, the third and final exercise, a lot of people, "what can i do without weights?" so, one of the most beneficial things is manual resistance. it allows the body to recruit itself, so i'm gonna bring in a partner. so, talia, come on in, okay? so what we're gonna do, talia's gonna lay right underneath me. so, we're gonna be in a nice bent-over row position, and we're gonna link up. so, the whole point here, we want to get a nice resistance to struggle, but we don't want to fight. we want nice, efficient movement. so she's gonna resist me up, and then she's gonna pull me down,

and i'm gonna control that through my scap. we're working both ways, so we're getting double the work in. a lot of people might just pull, pull, pull. it's all about working both ways. so recruit that body, get all those compensations out, and then we would switch. but we got another idea for you, so we're gonna do some -- come on up. we're gonna do some push-ups. so i'm gonna be on my back, and this is what we're gonna do. so, i'm gonna get all my shoulder stability down here. i'm gonna retract my shoulders so my lats are on, and talia's gonna go ahead and do the same, but she's gonna be doing the push-up end of it so we get that natural push-pull. so we did a back exercise, and now we're gonna get the chest. so we're getting nice and even, and that's what it's all about, that natural recruitment. so love partner resistance. ♪ the biggest thing all of our trainers here do at kp is really understand how to read a body, 'cause there is no one-trick pony. there's no magic pill like everyone wants to take. you got to put the work in, but it's not hard if you can just make it routine and you listen. ♪

that came down because of the heavy rain this area has seen. across the area here in california, there were flash flood warnings. in malibu, there were mandatory evacuations from the wildfires months ago. we saw a true that caused damage there. further south in los angeles, drivers enduring dangerous conditions with high water there and in hollywood, there was nor waist-deep water as people went from place to place. an incredible scene in southern california. there is more rain expected tonight into tomorrow. meaning it can only get worse. abc news, malibu, california. >> a library in the east bay received criticism after it said it would host a drag queen event. >> the county li sbrear hosting

the event. we talked to the drag queen at the center. >> before you make up your mind, would you like to hear a center in. >> meet the drag queen reading to a group of kids for story hour. >> i wanted to do more community outreach and the lgbtq community. >> here identifies himself as a gay man and has been doing drag since coming out almost 10 years ago. he hasn't decided what to wear at the next event in brentwood. >> most people say we are trying to teach people what to be and that's not the case. we are just trying to promote self love and acceptance for families. >> he is referring to online criticism the county library received. after announcing the event at the brend rood community center.

>> we're had calls at the library and lots of comments. >> county officials received constituents and standing by the effect. >> there is nothing controversial about what we are doing. we do programming like this all the time and have story times on a daily basis at every one of the libraries. >> officials say drag queen story hour is about love and inclusiveness. that's what bella represents. >> everyone deserves respect and the right to be what they want. >> it will be the parents's decision whether to allow their kids to participate in this story time. abc 7 news. >> we're should point out similar events have run into issues in other states. people protested at a library where a drag queen was scheduled to read to kids. they got about 50 complains over

the phone. they said the facility is there for the whole community. this is from a drag queen in texas who writes a man with a gun tried to get to where she was reading to families and the man was kicked out. he was already banned from the library from other issues. he was a member of the media and had a concealed carry permit, but he was disparaging the event. >> developing news out of mountain view. one person was shot after a carja carjacking. a man walked up to employees at the americas tire store on west el camino real and shot one of the employees in the leg and took a vehicle. the victim is expected to be okay. work is under way to shore up the sales force transit abc 7 news was in san francisco as crews started fixing the cracked beams today. the repairs are expected to be done by the first week of june
