>> announcer: now from abc 7, live breaking news. good morning, everyone, i'm chris nguyen. breaking news out of san francisco, two people are dead after a wrong way driver was involved in two separate incidents. nine other people are hurt and have been taken to the hospital. officer burt diaz from chp joins us live on the phone with more on the investigation under way. officer diaz, i understand this happened around 2:30 this morning. looks like we do not have officer diaz on the phone right now. but what we can tell you is that this happened at around 2:30 this morning. this happened on highway 101 northbound. that's where multiple lanes are closed right now. officer diaz, are you on the phone with us? >> yes, good morning. >> good morning. what can you tell us about this

investigation? >> yes, so it looks like at approximately 2:35 this morning, there was a wrong way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of u.s. 101. this was just south of cesar chavez. that wrong way driver then continued and collided with two separate vehicles. and it continued wrong way, it collided with a third vehicle in a head-on collision. that third vehicle was a passenger van that was carrying six passengers. the wrong way driver and the driver of the passenger van were pronounced deceased on the scene. and the front passenger inside that van was transported with major injuries and is currently in critical condition. the other five passengers were also transported with unknown injuries. right now we have northbound 101

at alemeni. we expect a closure until 10:00 this morning. >> we're looking at images of the crash scene right now. we understand the wrong way driver likely got onto the freeway at the vermont street entrance. what can you tell us about the vehicles on the roadway? have they been towed away yet or is that still happening within the next hour? >> yeah, that's correct. so we do have units out there as well as our investigative team. they're looking to clear up the scene as soon as possible. i do know that there was a total of five vehicles that are being towed away for evidence. but as of right now, the closure continues and they're still working the scene. >> you talked about that estimated reopening time of 10:00 a.m. this is going to have a huge impact on traffic, especially on the sunday morning. the nine injured, can you tell us about any of their conditions?

the golden bay. mild spot is san jose at 57. you can see the wind blowing here from our sutro tower camera, and it does look threatening, doesn't it? 51 in petaluma and winds in the upper elevations are breezy to gusty, 30 miles an hour out of the southwest, mt. tam, mt. diablo. visibility reduced in the san carlos airport. walnut creek had a shower in the past hour. we have showers throughout the day. we'll look for a bit of a break by the evening hours, then it will increase again tonight with some heavy rain, gusty winds, and we're talking perhaps another half inch to an inch, then very low snow levels. i'll detail the full forecast in a few minutes, chris. >> lisa, thank you. a large tree came toppling down in san francisco last enue., near gillette onat it hit two cars and took utility lines were it. city crews were

that same storm earlier brought down enough rain to get this creek roaring and raging between bush drive and bonsall, just above zuma beach, which forced the city of malibu to shut down the road, warning drivers. homeowners a few minutes away put up a sandbag barrier. >> that's the tree branch that olivia used to hang on, woo! >> reporter: laurel thorne captured the flooding field behind her home. this is farmland which has been in the thorne family since the 1940s. you can see where flames from the woolsey fire scorched trees around and next to her property. >> the last fire was 20 years ago. this was a very unusual fire. i think after this year, we're not going to be having this for a couple of decades, ever, or maybe never again. >> reporter: this week's storm spooked laurel's dog happy. she ran away. neighbo neighbors eventually guided her

home. as creation flooded, the l.a. river rose to incredible levels, high enough to bring this father and his 5-year-old son, aptly named river, to the overpass for a teaching lesson. >> i've never seen it like this before. we've come here to this spot, normally we call it the oasis because there's all these animals and birds that live there. but today it's completely covered, completely flooded. >> reporter: i've only seen rain two times and this is the second time. the fires and the flooding are making life much more unpredictable. in malibu, jade hernandez, abc 7 news. in the east bay, a library has received some criticism after announcing its plans to host a drag queen story hour. even so, the county library is standing by its decision. abc 7 news reporter carlos saucedo spoke with the drag queen at the center of this controversy.

is a black gay man in america. people are still saying that he's lying about the fact that he was beaten. >> yesterday the group celebrated the 110th anniversary of the nation's oldest civil rights organization. the theme was looking back to move forward. they said equality must still be fought for. and that even a successful and well-known actor isn't above the horrors of racism. happening today, kickoff for super bowl liii in atlanta is just hours away. a live look at mercedes-benz stadium where the teams will play. quarterbacks tom brady and jared goff both grew up in the area. goff is competing for his first ring while brady is hoping for his sixth. >> reporter: the differences when it comes to age, experience, and even what the expectations were when they came into the nfl. they grew up just about an hour apart from each other, at different times.

where we just keep getting wave after wave of energy that will continue the showery regime throughout the day today. the rain is going to pick up tonight and we'll have some cold showers mixed in with low level snow tomorrow. looking at the south bay, the peninsula, woodside, 280. some wet weather down around the santa cruz mountains. in the sierra nevada, temperatures around freezing. it's been snowing for a good day now in the mountains. so the snow will be adding up. still a winter storm warning through tuesday afternoon. so we're looking at at least three to four feet. this is at about 5,000 feet. then you go up to around 7 or 8,000 feet, even more than that. as you look at the resorts here, 52 inches in donner. 57 in kirkwood. a live look outside, right now the golden gate bridge, plenty of clouds. 52 in the city, 53 in morgan hill. mt. tam, breezy, 45 miles an hour in spots. cooler in the north bay. we'll see that cool air spread all over the bay by -- you won't

feel it today but certainly by tomorrow. winds gusting to 20 miles an hour, half moon bay, san carlos. no advisories but tonight the winds will get breezy with the incoming system. we're cooler in the north bay, kind of mild on the peninsula and the south bay. so we're looking at those 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts now. mt. tam, you saw the picture. 40 miles an hour on mt. diablo. the rest of the numbers here still pretty breezy. the view in the mountains is certainly snowy. what we like to see. morning showers, then cooler this afternoon with a few showers. but by tonight, say, after 9:00, the rain gets heavy. we'll see some brief downpours. and this will take us into your monday morning commute. today it's a 1 on our storm impact scale. you can get out and about and expect to dodge a few showers, less than a half inch. timing it out for you, 11:00 this morning, a few downpours in a few areas. throughout the bulk of the afternoon, notice they're just isolated. through the early evening, maybe a heavier shower over the east

bay, 6:30. this is what's to come, this is what we're looking at by 9:00 tonight. you can see the intensity, it pushes over the bay area while you're sleeping. and unfortunately, as you wake up to your monday morning commute, still having a few showers. and this is when that next system will move in, bringing the cold air. not a whole lot of moisture associated with that monday system, but enough to keep things soggy throughout the day. the first system throughout the day today, maybe a 10th or third of an inch. scattered showers on monday takes us from 3/4 inch to over an inch. certainly adding up, the rainfall totals, with each of these incoming systems. highs today, your sunday, cool, in the mid-50s. it will be breezy and we'll see the showers, they will continue to increase late tonight. and look for the breezy conditions. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a 1 on our storm impact scale today, tomorrow, and tuesday. but boy, tonight you'll be hearing that heavy rain.

wednesday night, but last night, golden state faced the lakers at oracle arena. abc 7 news sports anchor mindi bach has highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, everyone. the warriors found out shortly before tip-off last night that lebron james would not play in the primetime game for load management reasons. i guess that's a technical term for he's sore from playing 40 t before the game, andre iguodala pranked mcgee with an empty box that was supposed to hold his championship ring. the oracle crowd gave the former warrior a standing "o" for his contributions to the championship last year. steph curry, behind the back to klay thompson and nice splash. kevin durant found the open lane. he had 21 points in this one. then it's thompson's turn with an easy layup. he had 23 of his 28 points in the first half. the warriors led by five. then they trailed by ten in the second. look at demarcus cousins. over kyle kuzma. that absolutely woke up the warriors. he had 18 points, 10 boards in

i had some frustrating moments in the game tonight. you know, the frustration over this past year just, you know, everything bottled up and i kind of had a chance to release it. well, the sharks had a nice ten-day break. they were back in action saturday night against the coyotes. they're without erik karlsson, though, who missed his fourth straight game with a lower body injury. you know the nature shows where the male puts on a display to impress the female? yeah, she's not having any of it. more into that ice cream. second period, sharks trail by one, but brett burns with a shot and kevin la bank is there to bank it in, his sixth of the season. look at the hand-eye coordination. then, 44 seconds later, the breakaway and the rebound. good to go! hi28 othyear. but this game went to overtime burns gets the game-winner, backhand to forehand, his tenth goal of the year. sharks win 3-2. they are now headed out on a four-game canadian road trip. and congratulations to former cal bear tony gonzalez.

to about 20 miles an feet, and we've got 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts. we don't have any advisories but another vigorous system offshore that will be arriving tonight. between now and then, it's scattered showers. it's been kind of damp, an on and off thing this morning, mainly from the peninsula, redwood city and higher elevations. this is woodside, 280, wet into the south bay from campbell. prospect road, cupertino, stevens canyon road and in the sierra nevada it's been snowing steadily for the past day. it will continue today, into tomorrow. that's why the national weather service has kept the winter storm warning right on through tuesday. and local amounts at our ski resorts are anywhere from three feet, but then you go up to 7,000 feet and we could get greater than five feet, even seven feet in some areas. you can see the totals, which keep on ticking upwards at 52

inches in donner. emeryville, cloudy start, 57 in san jose, good morning to you. kind of blowy and rainy here from mt. tam. temperatures in the low 50s. you have fog as well in santa rosa. pier 39, lots of clouds out there. looking for morning showers this morning. then by the afternoon, it's cool. we'll still see a few showers. and then tonight, the rain becomes heavier. it will be breezy. but i want to get you up to date on rainfall so far from santa rose is a. 90% of average in oakland. 80% in oakland. san jose, 82%. 86% in san francisco. mountain view at about 72%. doing quite well with this past system. two more to go, the one tonight and then another one monday into tuesday. today's is a 1 on our storm impact scale. scattered showers, less than a half inch. you can see by 11:00 we'll have a little bit of rain here and there. and then it becomes more isolated throughout the day. so here is 1:30.
