>> this didn't last too long the clouds rolled back in and more rain in the forecast. >> let's check in now with the weather. >> the clouds are thickening and the rain will be widespread in a few hours. here's a look at the moment. seeing just scattered showers and strong wind gusts in the high elevations 26 miles per hour. 45 miles per hour atop the mount. this ranks 1 on the impact scale. we could have brief heavy downpours over night. the forecast later tonight after about 9:00 we'll see another wave of steadier rain. heavier rain. moderate to heavy downpours. through the morning commute. it would be a wet and slow one with slippery pavement and strong gusty wind. >> thanks. now like he mentioned more rain is on the way.

we're in the between storms you can say at the moment. don't let the break in the clouds and sunshine fool you. live in san francisco. with a look at what we have been dealing with in the bay area. >> a few hours ago actually an hour ago it was beautiful. blue sky and a few clouds. sunshine. now the sun is set. it's getting cooler and we are expecting more rain later on tonight. this morning if you were out, it was quite wet. take a look at this. mud sliding down a hillside off highway 9. this morning. blocking a road. some cars tries to get through there. often a trouble spot in the area. and look at this. hows of runners in san francisco were maneuvering around big puddles and slippery sidewalks this morning for the half marathon event around golden gate park and the ocean beach area. if you took time today to look up you might have seen a few

rainbows. there have been beautiful sightings around the area today. something to keep in mind after storms like this. we are looking at some more rain showers in just a few hours. so be on the lookout for that. they will continue through your morning commute tomorrow. >> all right. in the north bay the library closed again because of the roof leaking. the closure is expected to last for two weeks. just days after the library reopened following a renovation project. workers replaced the heating and ventilation system to accommodate the library offering extended hours. >> drivers may fa delays because of several feet of snowfall across the sierra. chains are required on interstate 80 and highway 50. a winter storm watch will remain

in effect in lake tahoe until tuesday afternoon. >> no matter where you look, we're seeing the effects of this latest storm. some places are getting hit harder than others. everyone is getting a taste of the wet weather in some form. >> particularly hit hard is southern california. a dramatic rescue over the san bernardino an elderly man got trapped in his car and nearly swept away in the raging water. crews plucked the man to safety. he had hypothermia but is safe tonight and alive. >> this video out of malibu. a sink hole in the middle of the road and swallowed the front end loader. the operator got out okay. >> mud slides are a concern where the woolsey fire burned. this is one of the flows the heavy rain caused. the river of mud onto the pacific coast highway. there are still evacuation

uber. >> he was a really hard working guy. he came to u.s. about four years ago. to look for a different opportunity and better life. >> he leaves behind seven children. a go fund me has been established to help the family with funeral expenses. nine people were taken to the hospital. one with critical injuries. the crash is still under investigation. authorities say drugs and alcohol may have played a part. >> east bay thousands of oakland families will find out tomorrow if public school teachers voted to go on strike. oakland teachers have worked without a contract since july of 2017. they want a 12% raise over three years. the school district says it can't afford to increase salary. that much. other key issues include reducing class size and planning to close 20 schools. >> it is a critical week for congress and president trump as they head back to the

negotiating table to fund the government. the president is spendsing super bowl weekend as his florida resort but has a lot of work ahead of tuesday's state of the union address. where negotiations stand now. >> golfing with stars. ending his personal golf shut down with tiger woods. the weekend get away ends the longest stretch of his presidency without a round. and it kicks off a critical week of government shutdown negotiations with congressional leaders. >> the president is dead set on keeping his campaign promise. i support border security. >> everything can be on the table for discussion. but clearly this needs to be about the facts. >> lawmakers have until february 15. to agree on border security funding. the government was shut down for a month. afte a border wall. congressional leaders return to capitol hill to work out a deal,

trump appears to be signaling a border wall or nothing approach to the negotiation. >> you need a wall. anybody that says you don't, they're playing games. >> in an interview, he said several options including another shut down were on the table. >> it's that alternative. it's national emergency. it's other things. and there have been national emergencies called. >> another shut down looms in the distance, president trump will need to finalize tuesday's state of the union address in between golf outings. and both sides of the aisle hope to make progress on capitol hill. >> we have a chance this week to move things. will we, we don't know. we could be wasting or our time. >> sears is around for now. what could decide whether the future of the retailer and its tens of thousands of employees as early as tomorrow. >> a sweet moment for some of the campfires youngest victims.

a 4.4 earthquake shook far northern california just a few hours ago. according to the united states

geological survey it struck just after 2:00 p.m. and had a depth of four miles. there are no reports of damage or injury. >> hearing tomorrow could decide the fate of sears. the u.s. bankruptcy court will address the future of the company. and its 45,000 employees. it will also address sears plan to sell off more than 400 stores to the chairman. he has been accused of stealing assets misconduct. they fired in october with the hopes of remaining in business. >> small steps this weekend and putting smiles on faces as well. the sheriff office posted this video from the an ideal give akilauea. t away. this year tripled in size. a total of 600 bikes were given away. and the sheriff office helped that effort. >> there is one place where you

it seems the common bond of being from california is enough to sway feinstein interest on super bowl sunday. >> supporting the rams as they take on the patriots. that might raise a few eyebrows. she was the mayor of san francisco when the 49ers won the super bowl. we all know about that rivalry. >> to the north bay now. some students are resting their arms and legs after a 24 hour row a thon. jr.s took turns rowing on stationary bikes. this is the 27th year for the fundraiser. which raises money for youth programs with rowing. more than 160 students participated to help replace old equipment. >> we're trying to raise money to buy new equipment and boats

and ores. a lot more people are getting involved. >> good to see how many people are involved. so far they raised $85,000. towards the $100,000 goal. it will take a few days to count the final amount. >> a city in indiana is finding a creative way to melt the mounting snow. the solution? vodka. sort of. the street department is using a chemical made from vodka to keep the roads clear. ice be gone is a solution and a natural by product of the popular liquor. most cities use salt to clear the ice and snow. but salt will only work if the temperature is above 15 degrees. this works just as well as 30 below. >> it gives us a bit more protection. and keep the roads clear of ice build up or slick conditions. >> if it's added to the brine

features. showers and winds tonight through tomorrow. with occasional downpours and powerful wind gusts from time to time. cold air moving in midweek. chance for mixed precipitation. rain and snow higher elevations. current storm is ranking 1 on the scale. light intensity. we expect more showers and maybe brief downpours over night. most locations will see half inch to an inch of rain. winds could be gusting to 35 miles per hour. at times. 7:00 p.m. by about 10:00 tonight we'll see the next wave of steadier organized rainfall. moving on shore. notice the dark colors the orange and red. indicating heavy downpours and there will be lots of them. widespread going into the over night and early morning hours. even the morning commute 5:00 a.m. we'll have more widespread showers. some will be heavy. and falling in a pavement that's already wet. it might be a slow and slippery morning commute. everyone later in the day as the

storm breaks up, we'll continue to see the stead demovement of pockets of shower activity and some again will be locally heavy. into the evening hours tomorrow night. of course that means snow in the sierra. rainfall potential. about an inch or more. nearly an inch in the east bay. low temperatures tonight will be generally in the upper 40s. and high temperatures tomorrow under breezy conditions once again. will be in the low 50s. we mite see a high of 54 don in san jose. as mild as it gets tomorrow. over in the sierra i warning int 4:00 p.m. tuesday. most locations above 5,000 feet. see five to ten feet of snow by the time the storm is over. higher peaks up to 15 feet of snow. 7-day forecast. so the current storm that continues through tomorrow.
