>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> another round of rain hitting the bay area right now, a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can see the roads are already wet. it's a similar scene in the north and south bays. no one is being spared right now this time around. good evening, thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. right away let's get a check with spencer christian tracking the rain all day long. lots of green out there. >> a lot of green, dion and eric. numerous locations, let's take a close look at live doppler 7. it's raining now in many spots. we're get being reports from santa rosa and san francisco. north to south we're getting reports of light rain. it is increasing in intensity as we speak. the storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. tonight and tomorrow we can

expect showers, brief downpours. most areas will receive half an inch to inch of rainfall from the storm and winds will gust occasionally up to 35 miles per hour. here's the forecast animation. starting at midnight, at which point looks like a pretty good drenching will take place across much of the bay area. as we get into the overnight hours and approach the morning commute at 5:00 a.m., there will be lots of wet pavement out there. the rain will still be falling. not quite so widespread at 5:00 a.m., but there will be brief localized heavy downpours and that pattern will continue through the early morning hours into midday and i'll show you what's to follow in just a few minutes. eric and dion? >> spencer, thank you. the rain is coming down now in parts of the bay area. >> let's get to abc7 news reporter kate larson joining us live along the embarcadero tonight where we understand, kate, it is indeed raining. >> reporter: absolutely, dion and eric. the rain started to come down lightly 30 minutes ago. really in the past few minutes since the newscast started, the rain has picked up and so has

the wind. the bay area has been through a cold windy and rain-filled weekend. trees fell across power lines and cars had trouble on the roads. on sunday, mud came sliding down a hillside off highway 9 in saratoga, blocking the road and cars trying to get to a winery near the santa cruz mountains. >> it's not the end of the world, but it is basically an inconvenience definitely. >> reporter: and in san francisco, thousands of runners maneuvered around some big puddles ons slippery sidewalks for kaiser permanente's half marathon event around golden gate park in ocean beach. if you stopped mid afternoon you might have seen this, rainbows arched across a soggy but sun filled city. snow in the sierra trips to sports stores to gear up for ski trips. >> goggles, helmet. >> reporter: angie flew from australia to ski stateside.

push alerts to get the latest news as it happens. >> the news now, we have learned that an uber driver and father from concord is among the two people who died in a wrong way crash involving several cars on highway 101 in san francisco early this morning. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with the family friend. >> the family as friends we cannot still accept that it happened. >> reporter: friends and family are remembering wahid killed sunday when his mini van was struck head on by a wrong way driver on highway 101 in san francisco. >> the vehicle got on the wrong way heading southbound in the northbound lane. collided with two vehicles and head on with another vehicle. >> reporter: the chp says the wrong way driver was killed. the accident scene was massive. it closed northbound 101 for hours and sent nine people to the hospital. >> our crews are confronted with multiple extensive and detailed vehicle stri indication. >> reporter: several passengers riding with him were among the injured.

friends say he was driving for uber. >> he was a very hard working guy. he came to u.s. about four years ago to look for a different opportunity and better life for his children. >> reporter: he leaves behind seven children. a gofundme page has been established to help his family with funeral expenses. the chp says nine people were taken to the hospital. one with critical injuries. the crash is still under investigation. authorities say drugs and alcohol may have played a part. cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> it is beyond tragic. now uber reacted to his death by issuing a statement saying, quote, this was a horribly tragic incident and our hearts go out to the victims and grieving family. we will work with authorities to assist in the investigation anyway we can. archipelago oakland's public school teachers will announce tomorrow if they have approved a vote to go on strike possibly later in the month. the teachers have worked without a contract since july of 2017. union leaders oppose a plan by oakland school district to close

up to 24 schools over the next five years. teachers also want a 12% raise over three years. they claim oakland pays some of the lowest salaries in the bay area. oakland school district says it can't afford to give the teachers the raise they want. >> hopefully you've been paying attention, but the patriots have won yet another super bowl. >> did they? this is video of fans in boston celebrating tonight. new england beat the los angeles rams 13-3, the lowest scoring super bowl in the 53-year history of the game. >> i can't even keep track how many they've won by now. all right. today's super bowl featured many players with ties to the bay area. >> patriots receiver and punt returner julian edelman was born in redwood city and went to wood side high. tonight he was awarded the mvp award. >> you know, i was asked to make a couple plays, we were able to do that. there's a lot of plays by other guys. defense was unreal. holding that offense to three points. it's pretty crazy.

the nfl season is officially over, but local foot ball fans still don't know where the oakland raiders will play next season. late last year the team dropped out of a tentative agreement to play at the oakland coliseum in 2019 before the team's scheduled move to las vegas in 2020. raiders officials are angry tha the nfl with an anti-trust lawsuit for leaving town. meantime, abc7 news was in

oakland's jack london square when members of the group make oakland better today recorded a public service announcement supporting the lawsuit. >> for committing crimes against our greatest culture, people and fans worldwide violating their own relocation guidelines. >> up against an early february deadline to decide on their 2019 plans, the raiders are now reconsidering the coliseum along with levi stadium in santa clara and oracle park in san francisco. a source familiar with the situation tells abc7 sports the 49ers have not waived their rights to the san francisco market and the nfl hasn't approved any deal. both of those would have to happen if the silver and black were to play anywhere but the oakland coliseum. >> in the north bay, some students are and legs after a 24-hour row-a-thon. juniors took turns rowing on stationary bikes. this is the 27th year for the fund-raiser which raises money for youth programs with marin rowing.

more than 160 students participate today help replace old equipment. >> right now we're trying to raise money to buy new equipment, buy new boats, new oars. more people are getting involved. >> so far they have raised $85,000 toward their $100,000 goal. but it will take a few days to count to the final amount. >> in the north bay, the novato library has closed again because the roof is leaking. it was announced on the library's website and the closure is expected to last for two weeks. this comes just a day after the library reopened following a renovation project. workers replaced the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system to accommodate the south novato library is going to offer extended hours. >> all right. live doppler 7 offering up a lot of green out there. >> yeah, it's doing its work today. here's spencer with the forecast. >> it's working overtime today. here's a look, closer look at live doppler 7. the rain has arrived. it's raining in many locations already. certainly those close to the coast line and the storm as you can see contains not only green,

a lot of yellow and orange indicating heavier downpours and steadier rain so it's going to be a wet period for a while. here's the view from our rooftop -- actually the abc7 exloratorium camera across the embarcadero from the studio. you can see a couple rain drops have hit the camera lens already. it's 51 degrees in san francisco, low 50s just about everywhere else as well. oakland, mountain view, 52 in half moon bay. this is a view from the east bay hills camera which is shaking in the breeze up in the higher elevations there. looking westward along the bay bridge. it is currently 48 degrees in santa rosa, 51 at petaluma, at concord. emeryville shows wet pavement. it's wet across the bay area. it will be showery and windy through the night and tomorrow. occasional downpours and gusts and wind. some of those are about to arrive right now. it will be colder as we get into

mid week. in fact, we may see some mixed precipitation in the higher elevations of the bay area tomorrow. this storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale, a storm of light intensity but it will produce brief heavy downpours rg, as i mentioned earlier guchts up to 35 miles an hour at times. most of the bay area will see about half an inch to inch of rain from the storm. let's get to the forecast animation. starting at midnight we'll see the orange and red areas indicating very heaven and i steady downpours. it will be moving eastward during the overnight hours. cold air will filter in from the north and bring snow to mendocino county and northern sonoma county. pockets of sunshine in the day tomorrow. although some of those pockets may produce heavy downpours, may contain heavy downpours. mt. diablo may see snow falling by the afternoon and evening tomorrow. cold air is on its way behind the storm as the storm pushes over into the sierra. it will not leave the bay area

completely for a couple of days. rainfall totals by tomorrow night 11:00, we project will be generally right around an inch or more down in the south bay. just under an inch around the bay shoreline and half an inch or just above in most north bailo indications. lows will be in the upper 40s, highs tomorrow just above 50 degrees in noeft locations, about 50 to 53 for most of the bay area. and in the sierra, a winter storm warning remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. tuesday. we're talking about 5 to 10 feet of snow above 5,000 feet. perhaps 13 feet of snow up in the highest peaks. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. becoming chilly, in fact, cold by tuesday morning and we'll see mixed precipitation we talked about in the higher elevations. very cold, wednesday morning and thursday, inland valleys, temperatures drop down to or below freezing. dry on friday, more rain comes next weekend. >> after what the midwest went

building anticipation for his state of the union speech tuesday night. he said he'd reveal details about his second summit with north korean leader kim jong-un during the speech or shortly before. he also said he may use the speech to address whether he'll declare a national emergency to secure border wall funding. the white house announced last week the theme of the speech will be choosing greatness. >> abc news has learned embattled virginia governor ralph northam has called his top level staff members into a, quote, urgent meeting earlier tonight. northam faces widespread calls to resign after images from his school year book surfaced in black face and another in a klansman's hood and robe. northam denies he appeared in the photos. >> while i did not appear in the photo, i am not surprised in its appearance in the year book. in the place and time where i grew up, many actions that we

lamb pert has been accused of stealing assets and misconduct. sears filed for bankruptcy in october with the hopes of remaining in business. >> millions of employees are expected to be calling in sick this monday with super bowl fever. >> how about this. 14 million adults are expected to miss work the day after the big game. although more than 8 million of those workers will take a pre-approved day off, that is according to a survey conducted by the firm challenger gray and christmas. the day off cost employers more than $4 billion. foot ball fans we talked to said it shouldn't be a big deal. >> i'll probably drink a little too much, having too much fun. it should be a national holiday, if you ask me. >> i don't think it's a big problem. people want to go out and celebrate once a year, let them do their thing. >> don't feel too bad for the employers. bosses as well are also expected to call in sick or at least drastically cutback hours torrow. >> in the interest of full disclosure, neither of us will be here tomorrow. >> nope. >> but it's already cleared ahead of time.

san mateo, and the pride of redwood city, julian edelman named super bowl mvp. to atlanta for the super bowl, it was a slow start for both teams. a little boring in the beginning. patriots opening drive, picked off by cory little ton. rams couldn't do anything with it. then in the second quarter, brady was 21 of 35 for 262 yards. hits edelman. he was the mvp with ten catches for 141 yards. 25 right there in the rams territory. steven goskowsky who missed the kick earlier makes it 42. 3-0 new england at halftime. it took 7 minutes for the first red zone opportunity. look at the beautiful pass to rob gronkowski down at the 2 yard line. he had six catches for 87 yards. michelle takes it in for the touchdown. the only touchdown of the game, plenty of time for the rams and goff. but watch this.
