good morning. i am janai norman. >> i am kenneth moten. here are some of the top headlines we are following on "world news now." >> the new england patriots won their sixth super bowl and by the biggest margin of any of the championships. the pats and los angeles rams set a record for the lowest scoring super bowl with a final score of 13-3. virginia governor, ralph northam is still clinging to his job despite calls from fellow democrats to step down over a racist photo in his yearbook. he first announced it was him in the picture and then announced it was not him. several more people have been diagnosed with measles in washington state, bringing the total number of cases to most of the young patients are not immunized. power has been restored at a new york jail where inmates spent a week without heat or electricity.

officials with the bureau of prisons are blaming a fire for what they call a partial outage. those are some of the top stories on this monday, february 4th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with breaking news. a deadly plane crash in a southern california neighborhood. >> we just learned five people are dead after parts of the plane fell on a home engulfing it in flames. the pilot, the only person on the two-engine cessna plane, died along with four others who were inside the two-story home. >> at least four other homes were damaged when debris from the plane was scattered across four blocks. >> reporter: chaos in yorba linda, california. residents rushing into the streets after a small plane crashes into a home in their neighborhood. >> i have a single family residence, four people missing.

we're going to establish chain of command. >> reporter: firefighters responding to the scene. >> they found a well-involved residence, a two-story family dwelling with fire showing from all sides. they did notice there was some debris from a small aircraft. the rest of the aircraft was located to the rear of the residents. >> reporter: from above, you could see the extensive damage, a huge hole. firefighters working quickly to stop the flames from spreading to other homes. >> we did a search and found two fatalities, and we have two patients transported to the local burn center. >> reporter: one firefighter suffered minor injuries. smoke from the fire could be seen from miles. witnesses in the area described hearing a loud boom. >> we heard the plane whining, and then there was an explosion, and it shook our house i immediately went to the ground. >> reporter: debris scattered throughout the neighborhood. a small piece of wreckage could be seen burning in the street, and one neighbor trying to douse those flames with a garden house.

the twin engine cessna crashed shortly after taking off from the airport. investigators are heading to the scene to investigate the crash. abc news, new york. a major storm system is blanketing california from one end to the other and bringing snow to the northern plains. >> the torrential rains in california produced mudslides and turned streets into raging rivers and lakes. abc's marcus moore has the details. >> reporter: mother nature's wrath on full display across california as millions brace for another round of punishing rain and wind. >> when you are bracing for what you already know can happen, yeah, you get a little nervous. >> reporter: torrential downpours transforming busy roads in los angeles into rivers. this santa barbara neighborhood hit hard by earlier wildfires inundated with mud and debris. the saturated earth hampering cleanup efforts. a sinkhole in malibu swallowing

last night just days after the alleged attack. he grew emotional talking to fans. >> these last fours days i would not have been able to get through it without my family, but also the support from y'all. the hateful rhetoric that gets passed around, it has to stop. it has to. guess what? it stops with the people that believe in love. we have that power. >> police say smollett told them he was beaten up by two hooded men who shouted racist and homophobic slurs and tied a rope around his neck, but so far investigators received no tips in the case and after reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance video found no attack caught on camera. president trump sat down for a super bowl sunday interview sharing his thoughts on a wide range of topics on the idea of his son playing football to the prospect of another government shutdown. abc's tara palmeiri has the details.

>> reporter: with less than two weeks until the latest funding bill runs out, the president not ruling out a government shutdown. >> would you shut down the government again? >> we will have to see what happens on february 15th. >> reporter: you are not taking anything off the table? >> i never take anything off the table. >> reporter: he and nancy pelosi set in their ways. she says under no condition will there be budget money for a wall. >> there is not going to be money. >> reporter: but trump is facing opposition in congress on multiple fronts. a large group of republican senators recently passed an amendment rebuking the president's plans to pull troops from overseas fighting terrorism. trump announced he would be reducing the amount of troops in afghanistan and syria, but now seeming to waiver on if it would be a permanent solution. the concern is you could in that vacuum see a resurgence -- >> we will come back if we have to. we have very fast airplanes and very good cargo planes, we could

come back very quickly. >> reporter: and a more personal comment from the president, saying he would have a hard time letting his son, barron, play football, what he calls a dangerous sport. >> i just don't like the reports i see coming out having to do with football. i think the nfl is a great product, but i really think, as far as -- well, i have heard nfl players say they wouldn't let their sons play football, so it's not totally unique, but i would have a hard time with it. >> reporter: in that interview president trump said he will leave the decision to release the robert mueller's report to the attorney general. the pentagon confirmed more than 3,700 additional active duty troops are headed to the southern border. the troops will support customs and border protection by assisting in surveillance and stringing wire between the ports of entry. they are expected to be deployed next. some of the troops already at the border will be pulled back. a border patrol agent was struck and killed over the weekend during a traffic stop in abilene, texas.

the agent was called to the scene to discuss the legal status of a driver that turned out to be undocumented. when she got out of the car she was hit by the driver of a different vehicle. doss had been an agent for 15 years. jury deliberations are expected to continue for el chapo guzman. there have been weeks of testimony including bribes from top officials in mexico. prosecutors accused the 61-year-old guzman of trafficking cocaine, heroin and other drugs into the u.s. guzman's attorneys say he is the victim of conspiracy. he faces life in prison if convicted. overseas a historic visit by pope francis on sunday. he landed at the united emirates, there for a three-day trip and he is the first pontiff to visit an arab gulf state. he is hoping to improve relations with the muslim world.

hitting and biting the officers. her father witnessed the incident and said it could have been avoided if the school followed their intervention plans. now turning into a standoff outside cincinnati. >> a 20 year veteran sheriff's deputy was killed as the suspect recorded himself and posted live on instagram before the s.w.a.t. team moved in. >> reporter: a veteran's sheriff deputy dead and his partner wounded outside cincinnati after a gunfight with this man, 23-year-old wade edward winn. deputies responding to a call saturday night of a suicidal man barricaded inside of an apartment, with a weapon. he documented the standoff on instagram, posting he needs help. >> they have now fired back at me, but only once or twice. >> reporter: authorities say winn was involved in a burglary attempt. despite threatening suicide, began firing at the arriving officers.

i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay.

a piece of the engine landed in the bathroom and wreckage from the plane was scattered across the yorba linda neighborhood. witnesses say it felt like an earthquake. marcus moore has details. >> reporter: parts of a southern california neighborhood, in flames after a cessna slammed into it. emergency crews on the scene. >> we have a report of a possible plane crash here. we figured that you guys might need assistance. maybe get people to the hospital. >> reporter: eyewitness randy watched as the plane went down. >> all of a sudden, we saw two pieces of airplane on fire. just falling from the sky. >> reporter: the flames engulfing a house. >> we are currently still in the operations mode and search mode. >> reporter: the small plane departed the airport. ntsb and faa will investigate what led the plane to crash into yorba linda. investigators will be at the devastating scene to see what went wrong. one of the things they will consider are the storms that

manhunt. authorities say he escaped from a prison transport van that stopped at a mcdonald's as he was being extradited from michigan to temple, texas. he's accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend and her friend. he is a person of interest in the 2009 disappearance of his son's mother. another recall involving chicken products. pilgrim's pride is recalling 58,000 pounds of frozen, uncooked, breaded chicken because it may be contaminated with rubber. it was shipped to public supermarkets in florida. possible rubber contamination prompted tyson foods to recall chicken nuggets last week. perdue and taylor farms recalled chicken products because of undeclared allergens. the super bowl was low scoring. there was another super bowl where the score was high, 59-51. not the super bowl, but the puppy bowl.

manchester firefighters were on a call when the lieutenant spotted teigen. he has cerebral palsy and can't speak. he used sign language and taught him a new sign for firefighter. his parents were deaf, and his mom is thrilled by the interaction and hopes it educates others. grammy nominated rapper, 21 savage is in federal immigration custody. the rapper was arrested on sunday morning in the atlanta area in a targeted sting. immigration authorities say the british citizen entered the country legally in 2005, but overstayed his visa. >> it expired back in 2006. now the 26-year-old is facing deportation. his attorney calls this a misunderstanding. 21 savage is up for two awards at next week's grammys, including record of the year. >> and a lot of talk on social media about this one, and folks said they had no clue he was a uk citizen. >> right, absolutely.

i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay.
