we've had snow lower than that. you see the north bay clearing up, other than the mountain. after 10:00 it will head further south and taper. everything on my storm impact scale is around the morning hours for rain showers, snow sticking at our highest peaks. matt keller at the santa cruz mountains where it is snowing right now and sticking. here is a look from the east bay hills. rain and snow at 7:00, the chance will taper. a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon and a high near 50. here is alexis. >> good morning, mike. we're looking at soggy conditions. not seeing snow, sthangfully. we are seeing wet roadways. that is a tongue twister at 5:00 a.m. i did double-check, no metering lights but it does look heavy pretty early. normally that doesn't happen

until 5:20,ee if they have to t those on. no issues on the bridge but high wind advisory issued once you make it on the span. ace canceled due to a freight train derailment in the area. the union pacific main line is fully blocked. they should give us updates on the other ace trains in a few minutes. as soon as we get that info we'll pass it along to you guys. >> thank you. right now snow on the ground in santa cruz mountains. >> matt keller is live there. >> hi. you want to know how i feel on the inside? this is how i feel on the inside. frozen, cold. i actually put this together and spent the last 15 minutes with my hands on the truck's heater trying to warm them up. the snow seems like it's just stopping. we had light snow for the last 10 minutes or so. plows came through again on highway 17. caltrans has been parked up here at the summit. every time it snows they come through with those plows just to

make sure the snow is taken off the roadway here. chp also pacing all of these cars, making sure everybody is going slowly over the santa cruz mountains because it can be extra dangerous when it rains. i'll be honest with you, it's so rare when it snows, i'm not sure how it is when it snows. it can't be good. it's terrible when it rains. it's certainly cold. we've been seeing snow come through. really sticking on the ground, it's beautiful up here. it really is amazing. you think someone would wear gloves when they are coming up here. i could not find mine last night. i searched through the closet, the trunk of my car. i couldn't find them. i would recommend anyone coming up here to check out the snow, bring gloves. it is certainly cold. cold enough to snow. when you're coming up here, be extra safe, drive slowly and bring those gloves. back to you in the studio. >> put your hands in the pocket. >> your snowman, that's some skills right there for a man who doesn't make them. we're impressed.

the snow was falling in the east bay overnight. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield has been on the search for it. she joins us live from livermore. hi, amy. >> good morning, jessica. i've got some pretty pictures to show you. look at this video of snow falling in, can you believe it, the livermore valley. that's how much cold and precipitation there was overnight all around 1:30. it was on the road close to the vineyard. just a few miles away. there was enough for it to accumulate, or a few inches of it. some of it looking so pretty on the pine trees there. we did spot a four-legged friend who doesn't quite know what to do with all of this. he illustrates how we all kind of feel about this. this does make driving dangerous. mines road is not a heavily traveled road at this hour. we just drove s out on the road. we took it very slowly. i'm sorry to report our flash of having a winter wonderland has

come and gone. the snow has melted. it just wasn't cold enough here for it to stick on the ground through the morning. so it is gone. we do want to warn there could be black ice remaining because of this weather we've had. while driving we did experience freezing rain hitting our windshield. atmosphere morning to be very careful. it is unpredictable. definitely weather we are not used to. it is still very cold. it's kind of surprising the snow is already gone. don't let that pull you into thinking it's warm out her, you do want to warm up. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. take a look at this. in sausalito, wet and icek conditions led to this crash between two cars on 101. take it slow out there. messy mixture of rain and hail covered exits last night making driving especially treacherous. one driver was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.

three lanes of southbound 101 were closed for more than an ho hour. it's reopened now. >> this was not donor pass, it's mount diablo in the east bay. snow started falling yesterday afternoon. park rangers locked the gates to keep people from crowding the mount diablo parking lot summit. they walked at the ba-- parked at the base and walked in. >> we would like to see your pictures. post them with hashtag abc now. you can track nap abc app. this is video from the vigil outside uber's hub in daly city. a 43-year-old man was killed when 21-year-old kayla wilson from san jose hit his minivan

head on. this happened sunday on highway 101 in san francisco. wilson also died. nine others were hurt, including several passengers in his vehicle. >> when we do that, we're putting our lives at risk for the better of our community. something like this tragically happens. >> the chp is still investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role. a gofundme campaign to help etimad's family has raised $170,000. a doll continue fa washed ashore on baker beach has died. this is video you see only on abc news. workers from the marine mammal center found the dolphin pleading from the tail area. vets sedated it and took it to their facility in sausalito. unfortunately it didn't survive. when animals come out of the water they typically have severe health issues. atherton, police are on high

quickly snow up to mount hamilton. we've got rain only 880, 580, hayward, oakland, san mateo bridge, san mateo belmont. in the lower elevations we're dealing with what you're seeing here on the embarcadero in san francisco. that is slick streets. caution for the morning hours, the wet and frozen conditions. east bay 39 to 44, 8:00 to 10:00 with a chance of showers. then a mixture of clouds and sunshine. we'll reach about 51 this afternoon dropping quickly in the 40s at 8:00. if you've been dying to wear that sweater or heavier coat, today is one of those days to break out some of the clothes we haven't had to wear all season so far. chance of showers 8:00 to 10:00 on the peninsula. then we hover near 50 this afternoon with a little more sunshine. under the stars 45 by 8:00. in the south bay 40, chance of showers. lower elevations.

coming up on 5:14. my concerns hydroplaning this morning. snow on the roads in the mountains. theres a high concern for that. flooding on the roads if you get under one of these cells there could be minor ponding. downed trees and flooding nonexistent. we'll have more on the storm coming up next. new overnight at least 10 people are dead, dozens others injured following an apartment building fire in paris. police arrested a 40-year-old woman for arson. officials say she has a, quote, history of psychiatric problems and that she was drunk when officers arrested her near the building. this is the deadliest fire in paris since 2005. >> new this morning we've learned a lifelong dodger fan died days after a foul ball hit her in the head. our sister station reports linda goldblum celebrating her 59th

birthday and anniversary with her husband in august. the 93 miles an hour foul ball went over protective netting and hit her in the head. she was rushed to the hospital but died four days later. the coroner said the cause of death was blunt force trauma. a mural of former 49ers quarterback was destroyed last week when crews tore down a building. it was about a mile from where the super bowl was played. artists have responded by putting up new murals including this one. a total of eight are planned at different locations throughout the city. the iconic duck boats are planning to carry new england patriot in boston. this is the sixth parade. this year the team will not have a rally at the end of the parade. officials executive huge crowds once again. past parades have drawn half a million to 1 million spectators. mayor walsh is warning them not

about over. as we head into the afternoon hours we start to destabilize the atmosphere once again. a few showers in the north pay at 5:00. then as we head over the ocean, that's where they will be during the overnight hours. look at these temperatures, redwood city 32, san mateo 39, san rafael 38. those are warmer spots. if you're inland you're likely freezing tonight and tomorrow night. look at highs in the low- to mid-50s. that's warmer than today. we'll stay in the low- to mid-50s with chilly rain friday, saturday, and sunday. alexis. >> taking a look at the roads. i have two new spinout crashes to tell you about. maybe some folks who were not driving for conditions here today. this started off as solo vehicle crash. unfortunately this person took a couple vehicles out with him when he started spinning across the roadway. 101 near ralston blocking one lane. so far not causing a back-up. we also have reports of a person traveling at a high rate of speed, spun across all lanes and landed on the shoulder.

mountains due to snow, 17 highway 1 to los gatos, no delays. thanks. you are waking up to a rare morning in the bay area. >> matt keller live in the santa cruz mountains. matt, what does it look now that the snow is back? >> the snow is back, coming down heavily here. you can see, it's nice to hear from alexis saying everything is clear on 17 because the sfo is sticking on the ground. we've been seeing the snowplows coming through here. i'm seeing caltrans just up the road here on 17 starting to move. so they will be coming through and plowing. they have been doing that all morning long as the snow has really just picked up in the last three, four minutes here on highway 17 at the summit. can you see people are taking it slow. chp also pacing people, making sure that people are taking it slow. obviously a lot of people enjoy this. this is really beautiful and it's rare up here in the santa cruz mountains.

it happens every once in a while, but not too often. a lot of people up in the mountains are enjoying this. the commute, of course, is going not people are able to drive it safely. as you can see it's starting to accumulate on the road. this is probably the heaviest it's been this morning. i expect to see those snowplows come through. chp actually ended up closing highway 17 in both directions last night, just after midnight. they close it for a half hour before the snowplows in place. those caltrans snowplows are in place. the wind is picking up as well. it's blowing that snow into my face, which doesn't feel so great. it is beautiful up here. i wish i wore gloves. my snowman is doing pretty well. he survived for at least a half hour. i'm sure a lot of people will be making their own snowman up here this morning. back to you in the studio. >> yeah. he needs some friends out there. all right, matt. thank you. stay warm. coming down pretty good right now. her is video of snowfall in the north bay as well. 2 to 3" sticking to highway 29

a vehicle lost control and hit a couple other vehicles on the way to the shoulder there. southbound 101 before ralston avenue. sounds like fire crews are there and blocking the lane. hopefully they will clear those lanes soon. we do have some type of hazard. sounds like a large piece of metal debris. possibly one or two vehicles hit that eastbound 580 before foothill road. trying to confirm if we have any lanes blocked but definitely seeing a delay on that approach. we'll have at least one shut down in that area. quick update on ace. ace 1 was canceled this morning. there was a freight train that derailed in stockton and that was blocking union pacific main line. no way for ace trains to get around that. we did just talk to ace. they said ace 3 is officially delayed right now. they may have to cancel that one as well. we are standing by for information. next traffic update coming up in a few minutes. thanks, alexis. a missing san francisco couple found safe.

9:00 the best chance is going to be again in the santa cruz mountains. as we head into the afternoon hours, notice it gets quiet over the top of us. that's when the sun starts to come up. after 5:00 we'll keep our eye on the ocean. look at that, scattered showers over the ocean. some of those may bump into the santa cruz mountains during the overpass hours. we're going to keep an eye on you. you may have a little dusting tonight while the rest of us will be very cold with temperatures in our inland valleys in the upper 20s to mid-30s around the bay mid-30s to near 40 but places that always get cold like palo alto, redwood city, down near cupertino, they may be in the low 30s. that's one of those areas where we can see black ice. we're going to be in the mid-50s after these frigid morning and rain rolls in friday, saturday, sunday. right now, 1 on the storm impact scale. >>th rds this morning. we did have good news. a sig alert in the north bay for all of the morning.

it started 12:30 last night. some icek conditions northbound 101 alexander avenue. they have three left lanes closed. just got word from chp they have lifted that closure. all lanes back open. it never was a big deal traffic wise, we didn't see collisions, never had a back-up on the counter-commute side. that is clear. nothing you have to worry about now. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, the approach this morning. the official metering lights on at 5:26. everyone has to wait unless you're using carpool lanes. a quick check of drive times. all things considered decent, highway 4 to the maze, 19ments 11 minutes bay bridge. san francisco to sfo you're in the green at 9 minutes. not a great day to travel to the sierra. at least 70 miles of sbrg 80 are closed in the sierra due to whiteout conditions. you're looking at interstate near don nodonner summit.

the san ramon valley, even freezing cold temperatures redwood city down into the south bay. >> a lot of you have been waiting for southwest airlines to fly from here to hawaii. today they are going to take a big step. they are running a test flight from oakland to honolulu. the flight will have no commercial passengers on board. the main purpose is to test their long range capability on the 737 aircraft. flights like these are pretty much the final phase for southwest to get approval to start service to hawaii. the government shutdown delayed their launch. the airline recently said it's likely to start flying people to hawaii this spring. another airport has overtaken atlanta to become the busiest in the u.s. for the number of flights. chicago's o'hare international airport surpass hartsfield-jackson airport for the first time in four years. o'hare saw more than 903,000 arrivals and departures last year. atlanta had 895,000. however, atlanta remains the busiest airport in the world for the number of passengers.

here in the bay area sfo is number one. it saw 470,000 flights last year. that's a 2% increase. oakland saw 241,000. that's also up 2%. san jose saw a big jump, 9 1/2% to 195,000 flights. women's clothing chain charlotte russe will close stores next month. the retailer cited for chapter 11 bankruptcy citing major drop in sales in store traffic. they plan to liquidate if they can't find a buyer. charlotte that 500 stores nationwide including downtown l.a., daly city and fairfield. all right. taking a look at the roads here this morning. we obviously have wet roadways, slippery roadways, a little bit of everything for the tuesday morning commute. i am keeping a close eye on highway 17. that is where matt keller is for us. that is where we've got all that snow coming down. chp really doing a nice job of pacing traffic through that slick area and plowing, too, to
