correspondent pierre thomas will start us off from the desk. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. even as the russia special counsel investigation nears a close, this morning an investigation of donors to the president's inauguration is escalating and causing new legal troubles. sources tell abc news that federal prosecutors are seeking documents and records related to the donors to the inauguration fund which as you said raised $107 million, the most in history. we're also told the subpoena is seeking a list of attendees to the events surrounding the inauguration and top level benefits for donors like photographs, opportunities with the president of the united states. federal prosecutors appear to be examining whether a number of crimes were committed in connection with the inauguration ranging from fraud and money laundering to illegal donations from foreign nationals. a spokesperson from the southern district declined to comment. >> they say they'll comply. mueller's -- some signs that mueller's investigation is coming to an end, but this is just one sign that the investigations will continue on many fronts.

>> actually it is, george. the southern district investigation will continue and as we know, congress is just gearing up to start investigating the president of the united states. >> okay, pierre thomas, thanks very much. this as the president prepares to deliver his state of the union address tonight, his first ever to a house chamber controlled by democrats. our chief white house correspondent jon karl, mary bruce covering it from both ends. let's first talk about the speech. aides say he's been work on a message of unity? >> reporter: yes, they say the big theme will be unity. the president coming after this brutal government shutdown really couldn't imagine a worse start the president has had with the new democratic congress shutting down the government over the wall, but he will talk about areas that he can work with democrats and he's going to remind them of one major bipartisan accomplishment he had last year on prison reform. areas he can work with democrats include dealing with prescription drugs, the prices

of prescription drug and also the question of infrastructure spending, so, yes, the theme will be unity. >> mary, we'll be able to see nancy pelosi's reaction in real time right over the president's shoulder. >> reporter: that's right, george. the power struggle between these two on full display. everyone watching her image after the president's shoulder throughout the speech. as yon jon mentioned, this is a very different crowd for the president, for the first time speaking before a divided congress and a sea of opponents. while you're still likely to see applause the president should face a fair amount of stoney silence speaking to several democratic members who have already announced they're looking to replace him in 2020 as well as a new generation of democrats. we'll be closely watching to see how the new rising stars in the party are reacting to their first state of the union as well. >> jon, one big question how he deals with the shutdown and the border wall and maybe declaring a national emergency to keep the government open. >> reporter: yeah, now, with a big caveat here, george, that

the speech is still being edited and nobody knows what the president will say until he comes out there. what i'm told is the president will make it clear that he does not intend to shut down the government, again, and i am told that he is not going to declare a national emergency. again, you don't really know what he does until he steps to the podium but they say the theme here will be unity, not government shutdown, not bypassing congress with a national emergency. >> mary, democrats making an unusual choice for their response. the failed senate candidate down in georgia, stacey abrams. >> reporter: yes, george. this is an unprecedented move. stacey abrams down in georgia will be delivering the democratic response. a pretty high-profile opportunity for someone who just lost in the midterms but she is known as a fierce advocate for voting rights and many are encouraging her to run again possibly even for senate then, of course, you have all of the democrats who will invite guests to help underscore their agenda and their positions. many have invited immigrants,

many survivors of gun violence and victims. then you have alexandria ocasio-cortez, one of the prominent rising stars in the democratic party who invited one of those protesters, one of the survivors of sexual assault who had that encounter with senator flake around brett kavanaugh's supreme court nomination. >> i'll be on it tonight. that starts at 9:00 eastern tonight. >> now to the latest on ralph northam facing a fire storm over that racist photo still refusing to resign despite nearly universal calls from members of his own party and now the man in line to replace him under fire as well. tom llamas covering it all from richmond, good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. governor northam's allies which are few say he will stay and fight this out. but fellow democrats say by dragging this on, governor northam is putting his ego over the state. this morning, virginia governor

ralph northam ignoring mounting calls for his resignation including from fellow democrats who say he's sticking around only to improve his legacy, not the state. >> i think he's trying to rehabilitate himself and there is a place to do it but it's as a private citizen. it's not as the governor of virginia. >> reporter: you think now this is more about him than about the government? >> i think it's more about his legacy than it is about the government, yes. >> reporter: northam's trouble started after this racist photo surfaced from his medical school yearbook page. >> i believe then and now that i am not either of the people in that photo. >> reporter: but northam admitting he did appear in blackface when he dressed up as michael jackson for a dance contest in 1984. >> i had the shoes. i had a glove and i used just a little bit of shoe polish to put under my -- or on my cheeks. >> reporter: right now northam is trying to stick to power and asking for forgiveness. >> if we get to the point where we feel that we're not

effective, that we're not efficient, not only for our caucuses but the commonwealth of virginia, then we will revisit this and make decisions. >> reporter: next in line is lieutenant governor justin fairfax who says he's ready to lead the state if northam resigns. >> there's a lot of uncertainty right now in our government. but we always have to be prepared to assume our roles and responsibilities that are given to us. by the virginia constitution. >> reporter: but this morning, fairfax himself is under fire after an unconfirmed report surfaced about an alleged sexual misconduct accusation from 2004. an allegation the lieutenant governor vehemently denies. >> this is 14 years ago. in fact, when this thing was not only from left field, it's from the planet mars because it did not happen in the way it's described. >> reporter: the situation down here in virginia getting even more complicated. now, back to the governor. what about the possibility of impeachment? state lawmakers said yesterday they don't want to go down that

route but they don't think this meets the threshold for impeachment which usually has to do with a mental or physical impairment, they hope the governor does the right thing and steps down. >> we'll see what happens. tom, thank you. overseas to that devastating fire ripping through an apartment building in paris. killing at least ten people and injuring dozens more. residents running up to the roof or climbing out windows to escape. james longman has the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this was a catastrophic fire. the true scale of the devastation is only really becoming clear this morning. apocalyptic. that's what firefighters called this huge fire in paris overnight which has killed ten people and injured more than 30. look at the strength of the blaze, orange and purple flames shooting out of windows. roaring for six hours as emergency services battled to get to those trapped. access nearly impossible.

residents winched to safety, some rescued from the roof. 250 firefighters on the scene, 8 of them among the injured pushing through the smoke, balancing on balcony edges. this woman says an alarm went off a little after midnight and smoke was already everywhere. living on the eighth floor she had to go from balcony to balcony to get away. others joined her huddled in a corner waiting to be rescued and all possibly started deliberately. a woman in her 40s who lives in the building and has psychiatric issues was found in the street and immediately arrested after the fire. witnesses say she may have been drunk and tried to set light to a neighbor's car following a dispute. many of the injuries are thought to be very serious and now firefighters face the grim task of going door to door trying to see if there were any more victims which means unfortunately the death toll

could rise. michael? >> just devastating, james. thank you so much. and now we'll turn to that dangerous weather that's hammering the west right now, several states are facing avalanche warnings as much as nine feet of snow falling in some areas. kayna whitworth is in lake tahoe, california, with more. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. sochl people calling this snow storm epic. the national weather service calling it life threatening. the local mountain closed after they got more than four feet of snow. we're talking about 54 inches of this light powdery snow covering the lake tahoe area and look at these drifts. this one behind me halfway up that building. some of them are about ten feet deep. for folks in the area this is the second blizzard warning they've been through this season alone. if we go a little further south, people in mammoth lakes, california digging out of an unprecedented seven feet of snow at the base. ten feet reported at the summit.

when we arrived in town we met a guy who left his car outside for one day and then could hardly find it. not that you would need it. most of the major highways were closed because of white out conditions. when the wind starts blowing snow you can't really see anything. michael? >> very dangerous conditions. thank you kayna. we'll bring in ginger who is tracking the tomorrow. you have the latest on its path. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, impacting so many including seattle, washington. you know, they only average in february 1.7 inches. they had 2 to 3 in the last two days. see the people trying to push the cars out there. a mess on the roads. a lot of schools closed and speaking of a mess down in southern california where san bernardino county had up to 11 inches of rain in the last week. that's a lot. so you had mudslides and debris flows and rain for the next 12 hours but then it's going to be

the snow in the sierra, windchill advisory really cold air here, very warm air here. that means ice, ice in the middle right on chicago tonight in an ice storm warning. you could see a tenth, up to 0.4 inch from chicago over to parts of central michigan. robin? >> ginger, thank you. new developments in that deadly california plane crash. this morning we're learning more about the pilot as new video emerges showing that plane falling from the sky. our chief national correspondent matt gutman remains on the scene. scene there in california. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we know now from investigators that it was a wing from that plane full of fuel after takeoff that slammed into that house causing that massive fireball and, of course, claiming the lives of four people inside. now investigators are turning to eyewitness testimony and new video to help explain why this plane

neighborhood. this video captures the twin engine cessna free-falling before bursting into flames showering this southern california neighborhood with blazing debris. >> witness reports say that they saw the airplane coming out of a cloud at a very high speed before parts of the airplane such as tail and the subsequent wings started to break off. >> reporter: the pilot now identified as 75-year-old antonio pestini, killed along with four inside the home who gather there had to watch the super bowl. debris littering a four-block area, at least 15 houses pelted with parts of the aircraft, on monday, investigators began the arduous task of gathering up the parts of the plane. you can see the flatbed has been going around the neighborhood picking up pieces of debris. right there is the nose of the plane. this appears to be part of a wing. i think a tail is in there. investigators tell us that the scale of the debris field is enormous. some residents running for cover as the debris fell from the sky. >> saw part of the airplane come down and saw the wing fall down as well. heard a loud crash.

>> reporter: the wing of the plane which houses a fuel tank, smashing into this home and bursting into flames. now, all those plane parts, the ntsb will take them to a warehouse in phoenix and literally reconstructing the plane. i'm told another factor they are also going to examine is the weather. it has been raining here for days and it is feared that that pilot became disoriented flying through the clouds. >> >> okay, matt, thanks very much. new details about the attack on "empire" star jussie smollett and the chicago police released the incident report of what happened that night describing smollett's account of what happened. alex perez is covering it in chicago. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, that's right. those new details coming from this newly released police report. some parts have been redacted. now, according to reports, the actor initially did not want to report the incident but was convinced by his creative director to notify authorities. now, the star of the show "empire" told investigators his

attackers, two masked men, actually referenced the show and called him racial and homophobic slurs before battering him in the face, putting a noose around his neck and pouring an unknown chemical on him. the report says he was bruised and indicates the attackers used hands, feet and teeth as weapons the police report also reveals that smollett was sober and was able to show authorities where exactly the attack happened. so far no arrests have been made. george. >> okay, alex. still looking for answers there, michael. >> definitely are. we'll turn now to boston. you can see the crowds are starting to gather to celebrate the patriots' latest super bowl victory. number six and police say more than a million people are expected to line the streets for the traditional duck boat parade today. and with the weather set to be unseasonably mild the turnout could be more massive. the patriots beat the rams 13-3

we are back with a case of a kentucky mother of four who went missing last month. pris police say she was taken to a home nearly 40 miles from where she was last seen. abc's linsey davis is here with the story. good morning. >> reporter: police are now saying she went to that home with three men who she did not know prior to meeting them at the bar. they also say they haven't been able to confirm if she ever left that residence. this morning police are searching for a missing mother of four. she was last seen on this video leaving a bar in richmond, kentucky, with three men on january 4th at 2:34 a.m. but now police say they believe she wound up at a house with them 40 miles away from the bar.

spurlock who had given birth to twins weeks earlier was on the phone with her mom when she left the bar with the men. >> the gentlemen with her, the last time she was seen on the surveillance cameras could know where she is or know more than they're letting on. >> reporter: her mother says she said she'd be home by morning but she hasn't been heard of since. police say her phone which has not been located was turned off around 8:30 that morning. >> she could have been taken against her will because all the signs so far point to that. >> reporter: police say they questioned the men she was with but released them. no suspects have been named. friends and family have been combing nearby areas hoping to find any sign of her. >> we walked through trees and brush near the embankments of water. i mean, we've looked anywhere we could possibly think she might be. >> this person was someone's daughter, someone's mother, someone's sister. if you know anything, we beg you

[ applause ] and you took me on one heck of a journey. how does this start? you know, how do you begin a search like this?

>> we have a fabulous team, chief genealogist named johnny cerniy and another named cece moore and their work came to bear on finding your english ancestry and i'll tell you how. we found a woman, your great great grandmother named harriet meade listed in the census with eight children, but a widow. when we looked at your dna it was all tracking to a family named bishop. we went back to the paper trail. guess who was living next door? a white man named william bishop. >> somebody was creeping. >> sneaking and creeping we call it and they had four children together. and when we traced four ancestry back through your bishop life we found your 11th great grandparents got married in 1600. shakespeare was alive and in 1630 they moved to the massachusetts bay colony and then through them you descended from king john of running

meade with the magna carta. we found your 44th great-grandfather who was anulf, the bishop and they're your family. >> to be honest i wasn't surprised by my royal roots. i can imagine when you do this for people, some people might find surprising things. what are things that surprised you even? >> well, one of the most surprising things was l.l. cool j's story. and l.l. cool j, is, of course, todd smith. very close family, very close to his grandparents. it turned out we found out that his mother unbeknownst to her had been adopted in 1947 and we have a protocol. you know, we can't reveal certain things live because it's quite traumatic and i had to call him to say, todd, you know, your mother was adopted. and he goes, what are you talking about? you know, i'm close to my grandparents.

i said they are not her biological parents. and he said, what am i supposed to do? i said, call your mother. she had suspected it. she had suspected it. >> i'm just curious. do you feel like a detective when you do this type of work? >> i feel like i've been blessed. i feel like each of us has an ancestor on our family tree waiting to tell a story and my job is to open the window so they can poke their head out and tell you all about themselves which is telling you about yourself. >> well, i tell you what, you definitely did that for me and you opened up a window i never knew. i thought i knew about my family history until i met with you and a lot of things even surprised my parents who i shared all of this with. i really appreciate this and this is amazing. if you haven't done it, make sure you do. dr. henry louis gates, thank you so much. you can see "finding your roots" tonight on pbs. make sure you check it out. we'll be right back. on pbs. make sure you check it out.

we're back with liam neeson who has a new movie out called "cold pursuit." 24 hours ago he made headlines for talking about an incident that happened decades earlier involving a very close friend of his who he says was assaulted. and, liam, first of all, i really appreciate your willingness to have this discussion because when it comes to race, it can be very uncomfortable for people and it just caught people off guard. how you responded when you were asked about revenge and do you want to explain what you said. >> yeah, we were doing a press junket and it was, you know, the topic of our film is revenge. it's a dark comedy too but it's base is revenge and the lady journalist was asking me how do you tap into that? and i remembered an incident

nearly 40 years ago where a very dear friend of mine was brutally raped and i was out of the country and when i came back she told me about this and she handled the situation herself incredibly bravely, i have to say that. but i had never felt this feeling before which was a primal urge to lash out. i asked her did you know the person? it was a man. no. his race? she said he was a black man. i thought, okay. and after that there were some nights i went out deliberately into black areas in the city looking to be set upon so that i

could unleash physical violence and i did it for, i'd say maybe four or five times until i caught myself on and it really shocked me this primal urge i had. it shocked me and it hurt me. i did seek help. i went to a priest, heard my confession and i was a catholic. two very good friends that i talked to and believe it or not, power walking. >> power walking. >> two hours every day to get rid of this and i'm not racist this was nearly 40 years ago, but because i was brought up -- maybe i'm rabbiting on. i was brought up in the north of ireland and brought up in the troubles, the '60s, '70s and early '80s. >> can you explain to people what that is.

>> the religion -- >> there was a war going on in the north of ireland. and i had acquaintances who were involved in the troubles. the bigotry, one catholic would be killed the next day a protestant would be killed. one catholic pub would be bombed. a protestant pub would be bojed but i was never part of it. because i -- >> excuse me. no, no, no, i appreciate your willingness to discuss and to explain and to put it into context. i know you have heard from people or the reaction from people. >> sure. >> and one of them, one response is the fact that when asking your friend and i'm glad she's okay. >> she passed away by the way five years ago. >> sorry for your loss. >> thaw asked about color. that you didn't ask the person was tall or short, big or small.

>> i asked all those questions too. i did. i did. but i did ask about race, yeah. >> because what we heard and saw was it was only asking about color. you did ask about other aspects. would you have had the same reaction if your friend said it was a white manage. >> definitely said an irish or a scott or a britt or a lithuanian. i know i would have had the same effect. i was trying to show honor to my -- stand up for my dear friend and terrible medieval fashion and i'm a fairly intelligent guy and that's why it kind of shocked me when i came down to earth after having these horrible feelings. luckily no violence occurred ever. thanks be to god. >> do you think you actually would have -- if a -- >> yes. >> if it was a black man who had nothing to do -- >> that was my feeling that i did want to lash out, yes. because my friend was brutally

raped and i thought i was defending her honor. and i admit that and it's a learning curve and -- >> what is a teachable moment? you said you wanted to -- it doesn't matter what you say, some people are going to be outraged. others are going to say, well, at least he's admitting -- he's being honest that this is a feeling that some people have that never really acknowledge it. >> yes, sure. >> but what is the teachable -- what are you hoping people will learn from you making these statements? >> to talk, to open up. to talk about these things, you know. we all pretend we're all kind of, you know, politically correct. i mean, in this country it's same in my own country too. you sometimes just scratch the surface and you discover this racism and bigotry and it's there. i remember when we were shooting "schindler's list" in poland 25 years ago, 26 years ago almost,

and hearing remarks from drivers who were taking us to the set thinking to myself am i hearing this right? this guy is making anti-jewish comments to me who is playing oskar schindler in the back of the car and it happened on several times and sometimes driving to the set we'd see swastika signs painted on walls knowing we were -- been driven past this area to go to set. >> what do we do? how do we have -- it goes beyond dialogue and conversation. >> you tell me what the teachable moment is. please. i'm going to throw it back to you. >> i think the teachable moment is we have to own up to when we -- the one point i want to make out is that this wasn't discovered by somebody -- you admitted this. this isn't a gotcha. so i give you credit there. but also having to acknowledge that the hurt, even though it happened decades ago, the hurt of an innocent black man knowing

that he could have been killed for something he did not do because of the color of his skin. >> no or people -- or they could have killed me too. at the time. at the time. >> but to get beyond it being a -- a difficult conversation and understanding that we do need to get to the root of it, to stop just talking about it and not -- i know that you're getting cru getting crucified before saying what you did. >> sure. >> you're not shying away. you're admitting that it was wrong. you've learned interest that. but have to also understand the pain of a black person hearing what you said. >> of course, of course, absolutely. you're absolutely right. yeah. and at the time even though it was nearly 40 years ago i didn't think about that. all those things surprised me but it was this primal -- >> yeah. >> hatred, i guess that really,
