isas the scene on highway 29 just north of calistoga. here's another beautiful picture of the snow in the wine country. this was mt. saint morning. quite a treat for an area that rarely gets to see this weather. >> it was a snowy day at the summit. it was slow going for drivers as they made their way. some people decided to pull over and take advantage of this winter wonderland. take a few shots and feel what that snow was like. >> wo see, is gone now. the frigid temperatures will hang around a bit longer. >> just how cold it will get. >> well, you're going to freeze.

phone or tablet. here on abc 7, we are committed to building a better bay area. that means digging in deeper for the challenges we face. one of the biggest is the high cost of living. it's been driving people away for years. 46% of residents plan on leaving within the next few years. that's a problem. two thirds say they want to get out of the state entirely. destinations include texas, oregon, arizona and nevada. what can bay area businesses due to keep people from leaving? leslie brinkley looks at some tactics businesses are taking and if they're working. >> workers in the bay area are more likely than not to say they bail on living here. liz and her husband are packing up to move to arizona from their long time homes in benicia in

one family, they were brand new. they're hopeful their story will help protect other families. the mom thought she smelled natural gas in her condo last week. there was a carbon monoxide scare in december. she didn't really trust her nose so she did trust 911. she sent her husband out for carbon monoxide. >> she activated them and tested them. since it was late at night, they have she temporarily left one on the dining room table and another above the door in her son's bedroom. that night, an alarm next door alarmed prompting him to get everyone out of the building. hers, though, did not go off. when the firefighters arrived,

they measured 33 parts per million and 100 parts per million where he she didn't have a detector. they said because it was 100 parts per million, pg&e expedited their response. >> i don't even think there's something wrong with my detectors but i don't know what else i can do to protect us. the unit above us which had lower carbon monoxide ratings than we had, their detectors went off and they have the same brand. >> the company was at a press conference with the san francisco fire department and oakland fire department to educate consumers about carbon monoxide safety. >> what i would caution everyone is that placement of carbon monoxide alarms is critical. make sure to read manufacturer instructions and match the instructions to your particular environment. >> reporter: neither the fire department can say for certain

why her detectors didn't alarm. >> c.o. mixes with the air and it matters what concentration enters into the environment. >> reporter: they said never place it near forced air. have at least one on every floor and outs sleeping areas and bathrooms. and test them. and make sure you know the difference between a carbon monoxide detector and a smoke detector. she didn't realize the ones in her home were smoke detectors, not carbon monoxide detectors. the boiler has been turned off until it can be repaired. if you smell natural gas, you should heave your home immediately and call 911. it is odorless. having them in hon'tgati liv im but it could save your life.

abc7 news. >> all right. thank you. more than 100 victims of the camp fire have been told they need to leave their hom hom homh paradise. they've been living in rvs. yesterday they rescinded it saying they're not going on pay for debris clean-up because of people living on burn property. it is not clear where they'll be able to go now. sometimes a story just hits too close to home. today, david louie was with his photographer working a story in downtown san jose when they found themselves a few feet away from progress. >> you know, these kinds of crimes happen all the time. this time a reporter just happen to be there and saw it. and he was there to tell us what it was like. >> reporter: terrifying.

i have to say it was terrifying. it was a complete shock to suddenly looking up over shooting a story here to see a woman sobbing, a man coming to her aid, and spauktd robber appointmenting a gun at us. we immediately ducked for cover until the coast was clear. then we saw something truly remarkable. a hero in action. you can see how the good samaritan stood by. he saw the robber happen right after she left the service station. they didn't realizeett trying to run away with a we were on santa clara street preparing to do a sidewalk
