city council tonight. >> we know that public schools are the heart of the community. >> abc7 news was at oakland city hall, president of the teachers union spoke during a rally before the city council meeting. asking for 12% raise over three years, district offered 5% raise over same period. teachers went to ask for city support. oakland unified members show roughly 2,300 teachers in the district, over 36,000 students not including at registered charter schools. all sporting programs cut last summer except for bowling are running again thanks in large part to donations to keep the programs afloat. stranded for days in mendocino national forest, hear from local couple who survived. months' long battle over rvs

campers told us can't afford to pay rent anywhere else. homeless services will be contacting the campers. imagine stuck in the snow five days. couple returned home after camping trip took a dangerous turn, rescue crews found them in mendocino national forest. >> reporter: after a successful night of snow camping they decided to drive further into the mendocino national forest on snow covered track but adventure quickly took a wrong turn. >> got stuck. >> reporter: that was thursday, not expected back until friday night when the storm blew in. this is the jeep they got stuck in and survived in better part of week. soft top of the jeep broke off

day two, had to cover entire back of the jeep and insulate with all their supplies. 18-year-old maya's first time in the snow but was experienced camper, rationed food and posted sign at trailhood but was worried. >> 4:00 and no one coming, started getting emotional, want to go home. >> reporter: 30 minutes later a search party found them and jeep half buried in the snow, towed them to safety where families were waiting. >> want to say thank you, how grateful both of us are. without them wouldn't be here. >> reporter: if you get stuck in the woods, seek shelter so you're easier to find. >> amazing. more about the weather coming our way. >> sandhya patel is here. >> going to be icy cold for the
