[ applause ] >> he did a good job tonight. the president gets an "a" from me tonight because he did what he had to do and in some respects it was against character. >> our thanks there to our incredible powerhouse political team working some late hours in the past few hours, and we have more analysis on the issues plus a fact check on the president's speech right now on abcnews.com. now to virginia governor ralph northam and word this morning that he's not resigning any time soon despite widespread condemnation over a racist photo on his medical school yearbook page. one of northam's closest friends, a republican state senator, tells abc news that he thinks northam can withstand the pressure to quit. meanwhile, the democratic party of virginia is evaluating the sexual assault allegation against lieutenant governor justin firefax saying the claim should be taken with, quote, profound gravity. fairfax strongly denies the

allegation. an urgent manhunt is under way near chicago after two shootings on a highway which have some people fearing a serial shooter could be on the loose. the first shooting on interstate 57 left three people including 2 boys wounded. just hours later and a few miles away a postal worker was shot and killed while driving into work. 55-year-old tamara clayton's daughter says her mom didn't have an enemy in the world. >> i wanted her to see me get married. i wanted her to see me start a family. she is my absolute best friend and i lost that because someone decided to just take it away from me. >> police have not made any arrests. at this point they say the shootings appear to be unrelated but state police are promising to increase patrols on chicago area highways. a disturbing discovery in a wealthy new york city suburb. a woman's body was found stuffed into a suitcase along a road in greenwich, connecticut. police say she was between 18 and 30 years old and her hands and feet were bound. the medical examiner is trying to determine her identity and how she died. investigators believe she was

killed somewhere else. health officials in washington state say they figured out how the current measles outbreak began. they say a person from a foreign country was the first to contract the disease then that person came in contact with a large group of unvaccinated children. officials say those kids then went to public places infecting others. at least 50 cases are confirmed. more than 100 other people are being monitored. turning to the weather now, a dangerous ice storm is threatening parts of the midwest and great lakes making for a treacherous morning commute. let's take a look at your wednesday forecast. looking at the radar you see the storm in the upper midwest. a quarter inch of ice is possible across parts of the great lakes and northern illinois today. the morning commute in chicago will be slick, and minneapolis gets more snow. meanwhile, some ski resorts in california's sierra nevada are trying to dig out. they got up to 117 inches of snow since saturday. as for today's temperatures,

of a tv special that he'll make a decision by the end of the month on whether he will run, and his family will play a key role. the 46-year-old democrat gained national attention when he ran against senator ted cruz. a new revelation this morning about presidential hopeful elizabeth warren. "the washington post" is reporting that senator warren listed her race as american indian on a texas state bar registration card in 1986. overnight warren's spokeswoman repeated her acknowledgement that she is not a citizen of any tribe and only tribes determine tribal citizenship. she says warren is sorry that she was not more mindful of that earlier in her career. alabama's attorney general has decided not to bring charges against a police officer who mistakenly shot and killed a man at a shopping mall thanksgiving night. he says the officer acted reasonably while responding to an earlier shooting at the mall. authorities say the officer saw the 21-year-old victim carrying a gun and assumed he was the shooter. the victim's family is outraged.

man, and the backlash has now affected his movie premiere. this morning, fallout is growing after liam neeson's startling admission that 40 years ago he sought to carry out revenge after a friend told him she was sexually assaulted by a black man. >> there were some nights i went out deliberately into black areas in the city looking to be set upon so that i could unleash physical violence. >> reporter: hours after his appearance on "good morning america," the red carpet and photo opportunities kicking off the new york premiere for neeson's latest movie were canceled as his story set off a debate across social media. >> i'd never felt this feeling before, which was a primal urge to lash out. >> reporter: neeson first admitted the revenge plot during an interview promoting his new movie. >> i went up and down areas with a cosh hoping some black

[ bleep ] would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know, so that i could kill him. >> and it really shocked me, this primal urge i had. it shocked me, and it hurt me. >> reporter: the actor then saying -- >> i'm not racist. this was nearly 40 years ago. if she'd have said an irish or a scot or a brit or a lithuanian, i would -- i know i would have had the same effect. >> reporter: observers are now considering what's next for neeson as some praise his honesty while others are sharply critical of his actions. >> i think he doesn't -- he hasn't had a chance to really consider the impact his words have on black fans, on black people, but i'm not sure if he's so remorseful of telling the story or of the actual action of wanting to exact revenge, exact violence on a black person. >> reporter: neeson saying his hope now is that this will encourage more frank conversations about race. >> we all pretend we're all kind of, you know, politically correct.

standing in the summit, snow was falling down on us, there was snow sticking on the ground this morning. really just a bunch of wet spot from the melted snow. this morning, the biggest concern, ice on the roads. cruz hado say about it in tweet. that was f lasted. keep in mind, we may have ice on the roadways tonight and into the morning. my photographer ian drove highway 17 from santa cruz over the summit into redwood estates. the roads were wet but not icy at that time. but that can change with the temperatures. black ice forms making it hard to detect. they had tips for driving on black ice. drivers on highway 17 know what often pops up around lexington reservoir into los gatos. if you hit black ice, remain calm and do as little as possible. don't break and keep the wheels straight. if you feel the back end of your car sliding gently turn the
