fire. the fire chief says this started when construction crews working on an underground fiberoptic hit a gas line setting off the blast around 1:18 p.m. >> just huge ball of fire. it was really loud. you could hear it spewing. you could hear the gas spraying really loud. >> sky 7 was overhead after the gas exploded into a fireball right outside the hong kong lounge 2 restaurant on the corner there. we have live team coverage on the scene. amy hollyfield is gathering the latest from the scene. we'll check in with her at 5:30. right now, though, we want to go to abc 7 news reporter matt keller. he has reaction from evacuees. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. we have a bird's eye view at geary and parker. you can see a lot of work being done by pg&e crews this morning. many people are waiting to return home. some watched this terrifying event happen in front of their eyes. >> i was about to park and i saw -- i heard something and

when i looked, there was huge fire shooting up the sky. >> when the fire ignited, fire officials went door to door evacuating neighbors within a one-block radius. five buildings were damaged. the rough estimate of people displaced sent 100 people late wednesday. that late mandatory evacuation order. they were directly impacted by the fire and firefight. san francisco fire is hoping the number will be much lower once landlords account for the tenants. >> the electricity cut off, the gas is cut off. we're telling people to spend overnight elsewhere. it may be a few hours they might let us back in. they couldn't promise. >> reporter: dozens of people ended up returning home to collect important items that they then had to leave. now, pg&e says crews will be working around the clock to restore power and gas here in this area. reporting live in san francisco, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. understandably, there was panic

and chaos. >> you'll hear what the dispatchers went through in the first few minutes. >> get some water. we're not going to extinguish the main. get the water on the -- the building! [ inaudible ] >> on the top of -- [ inaudible ] >> it's craze what the first responders go through in the beginning of an emergency. dan noyes found a lot of information on pg&e and mass tech. >> that's the company that was digging a fiberoptics projoptics >> the company is mass deck, a construction company out of

coral gables, florida. it was their crew of 8 to 10 workers, operating that excavator that cut into the 12-inch gas main. video shows that the natural gas didn't immediately catch fire. the crew had a chance to runaway. no one was hurt in this incidents. cal osha tells us that they've had inspections with mass deck two in southern california and one from concord in 2015. the employees were demolishing power lines with other contractors when one of the workers suffered an electric shock cutting into a riser that housed a live power line. when someone is going to dig, they have to call 811 so pg&e can mark where the gas lines are to prevent an accident like this. pg&e said today mass tech did call and theer rked. but pg&e has faced problems with its 811 system. a former commissioner with the p.u.c. tells me she has questions. >> was there an inaccuracy in

the marking? what happened to the system and this is also why the investigation that the p.u.c. launched in 2018 was important into this very program. >> in december, the p.u.c.p.u.c. broken law. they found pg&e undercounted tens of thousands of late ticket each year between 2012 and 2016. then, of course, is the bigger question. why did it take more than two hours to turn off the gas? they apparently couldn't find a valve, so they had to resort to digging by hand in the street. finally i can crimping the gas lane closed. dan noyes, abc 7 news. verizon issued a statement about their role. we understand that company is cooperating with the investigators as they determine the root cause of the incident. the fiber installation has been halted pending the outcome of an investigation by local

housing. now more of it is coming to the south bay. they put aside funding to kick off construction of 1100 units. it comes from repayment of past redevelopment loans and fees. because of funding like this, one woman that we spoke with moved into her own place with her three sons. she beat out 1700 applicants for her three-bedroom apartment. she pays just under $1500 a month. that's at least half the typical market rate. >> i want to live like this with my kids. i have good neighbors, too. and the people work here. really nice with me. they're really nice. >> san jose is also adding a dedicated staff member to speed up the approval process for affordable housing developments. now for some not so affordable housing. governor gavin newsom is selling his marin county home for nearly 6 million bucks. the mid century modern home is in the kept woodlands.

governor newsom relocated to the state capitol. real estate agents say living in a former governor's home does add value. if he ever runs for president, well, it could be worth even more. in marin county, the numbers are in and they're impressive. for the salmon returning to the creek, according to a count by the water district, 350 pairs of coho dug nests. aquatic ecologists say that this is the best return in more than a decade. they say the numbers were as low as 50 to 60 fish in 2008. they credit habitat restoration effort for the population surge that has occurred, which is great to hear. now to a story bolstering the belief that maybe cats do have nine lives. >> a cat named fluffy lost her fluff, at least temporarily. take a look at this. her owners found the cat frozen in a snowbank last week. this was in montana in 10-degree

they're going to be out here. we have a few calls into them and haven't heard back. here is video of yesterday afternoon's fire. it started just after 1:00. it damaged five buildings here in san francisco, residential and commercial. no one was killed or hurt. the fire chief says more than 100 firefighters were out here fighting this one. it burned for more than two hours as they waited for pg&e to cap the gas line. >> on scene. it's complicated. there's a lot of piping under the streets and so forth. they're doing their best. >> reporter: the fire started when construction crews who were working underground on fiberoptics lines, they hit a gas line and then that gas spewed for a couple of hours. pg&e, though, still out here working on the situation. muni has rerouted the 38 bus line. they do expect delays on muni. also, expect delays if you're driving through this area. again, you can get through geary into downtown. reporting live in san francisco,

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. understandably, there were many questions for pg&e during the fire. >> spokesman blair jones explains why it took more than two hours to shut off the kbas gas. >> this is a complex situation beneath us. there's a complex web of utilities. multiple gas lines ranging from 2 inches to 12 inches. you also have water and fiberoptics and electric. it's not as simple as digging right in and isolating a valve or pinching a gas line. you have to go slow. that's for several lines. state law requires us, if we knw there's a gas line within 24 inches beneath the surface, we have to hand dig. you can imagine trying to hand dig into asphalt. it takes time. we need today go slow and put together a plan first. then slowly methodically hand dig to get to points where we could shut off valves or pinch lines to shut off service. i mentioned it's very cold right now. if we do this wrong and shut off

new clues could help san francisco police solve murders committed in the '70s. investigators released this age progression sketch of a murder suspect nicknamed the doodler, named so because he would draw pictures of his victims before killing them. a sketch artist made the new image on the right based on a sketch produced in 1975. you're about to hear an emergency call made in 1974 after someone found one of the doodler's victims at ocean beach. >> might be a dead person. i think. right across from -- street. >> $100,000 reward is being offered for clues in this cold case. so here's another look at the sketch from the '70s. the doodler targeted gay men and police believe he killed at least five people. let's take a look at what's going on with your neighborhood temperatures. who is not freezing in the north bay? guerneville is close at 33. same thing at napa.
