live where you live, this is "abc7 news." rain soaking parts of the bay area tonight, and this storm is becoming more active. take a look at live doppler 7 now. tracking thunderstorms approaching the santa cruz coastline, with possible hail. heading into santa cruz at 11:15. morgan hill at 12:13. tracking moderate showers here, and a mix of rain and snow over mt. hamilton, and also up towards our radar site. i'll have the latest on your weekend storm, swhich is a cold one. an unexpected surprise from caltrans about the richmond-san >> joba foso live with more. >> reporter: originally, caltrans said work would not begin until monday, but that's changed. i'm going to step out of the way

so you can see that blinking arrow. that's what drivers see when they pull up here, letting them know that a lane has shut down. crews are doing work on the temporary repairs made to the bridge. as a tow truck driver, sometimes shawn finds himself going over the bridge multiple times a day. so when that concrete came down yesterday, he was in the thick of it. >> yesterday, it create quite a lot of chaos. >> reporter: caltrans isn't planning to shut down the whole bridge again, but from now until 7:00 a.m., one lane will be closed in both directions while crews replace the metal plate. >> i appreciate the fact that they're doing that at night. shutting it down in the middle to have day like that makes my job harder and i'm sure makes everyone's job a little harder than it should be. >> reporter: the repairs specifically is targeting the bridge's expansion joint. caltrans confirmed what we reported yesterday, that an

expansion joint caused the problem. it was worn down from heavy traffic. >> i was driving home, being very cautious. >> reporter: caltrans insists the bridge is safe. >> people's safety comes first. >> reporter: the repairs could impact saturday travel as well. but the commuters we talked to don't seem to mind as long as this doesn't happen again. if you have more questions this weekend about traffic conditions, you can check caltrans' quick map here. you can find it in your app store and permanent repairs to the bridge will begin monday. jobina fortson, "abc7 n "c7ews" whose vehicle was struck by the heavy debris. if it was just seconds later, the debris could have crashed through the windshield. he happened to see the falling debris moments before impact.

>> i would say eight or ten pieces. >> raining? >> a small bucket's worth. there was a fair amount of it falling down, yes. >> he says he felt lucky enough after the incident to buy his first ever lottery ticket. a stabbing forced police to shut down a san francisco b.a.r.t. station. around 7:30, there was a fight on a train at 16th and mission. police have a person of interest in custody. the station has now reopened. federal investigators are in san francisco trying to figure out what happened when a gas they pn to develop a timeline of wednesday's events and conduct interviews. one thing investigators will be looking into is why it took more than two hours to shut off the gas. the ntsb decided to investigate because of the extent of the damage. >> we were able to secure three or four -- three to four feet of

the pipeline that we may be sending back to our lab in d.c. for further evaluation. >> the california public utilities commission is also conducting an investigation. no one was hurt, but several buildings were damaged. luis pena is live on the scene with more people affected by this mishap. >> reporter: as you can see, crews are still working at the scene. right next to them, this restaurant. a popular restaurant here in san francisco, and a favorite to many, including shawn and britney, residents of the city who love the place so much they took it upon themselves to open a go fund me page to help the workers. for the last two years, shawn and britney have made hong kong lounge their second home. >> we probably spent the most time with him than anyone else in san francisco. they know our order by heart. >> reporter: they tell me that it was their selling point.

but with time the staff and cooks became their friends. >> they were one of the first families we experienced in san francisco. >> reporter: so much so, that this saturday they had a reservation, now canceled by the gasline explosion that damaged multiple buildings. >> after we saw the news, we put together our story and started reaching out to everybody we knew with our go fund me. >> reporter: so far, they've raised over $2,000. their goal, to hopefully get past the $10,000 mark. >> oh, goodness. we just want them to be back open. we hope the best for them d buig hekleberry fected which the fire programs. >> the building is unusable. >> reporter: they have gotten calls from multiple businesses ready to extend a helping hand. >> we have agencies in the community, who have stepped up and said we have office space.

"abc7 news" is committed to building a better baby looking for improvements and solutions, that includes public transportation. in the south bay, a welcome sight for computers, b.a.r.t. trains running between fremont and san jose. testing along the new extension begins next week. amanda has the details. amanda? >> reporter: that familiar sound of construction will soon be replaced by buzzing b.a.r.t. trains. you heard me right, test trains on a ten-mile extension track from here to fremont.

testing along the line to san jose starts next week. the transportation authority is heading up current testing. b.a.r.t. will take control later this year. >> there's been some technical difficulties that delayed the opening of it. but this is a good step forward. >> reporter: he emphasizes the extension is a big deal for the bay area. commuters are hoping testing will deliver a better sense of timing for station operations. >> i took b.a.r.t. and i'm going to take a lyft to san jose. >> reporter: the extension she says would ease her track to see family in the south bay. how much does that put you back in terms of time and money? >> it's about $30. and i want to save an hour or 45 minutes. >> reporter: when trains carry travelers along the extension, ridership is estimated to start at $23,000 a day, doubling after 15 years. many say they're already on board. >> maybe some inconvenience.

i would rather be more convenient with public transportation. >> reporter: more than millennial inconvenience, many say it makes sense. how does this build a better bay area? >> i think having a ring of rail to completely circle the bay area is very important. >> reporter: now, the opening of the b.a.r.t. station is tentatively set for november. there are plans to extent b.a.r.t. into downtown san jose. in san jose, "abc7 news." >> amanda, thank you. all week, "abc7 news" follows the bay area b.a.r.t. experience. see what it's really like to ride now and what track the transit system will take next. because a safer b.a.r.t. means a better bay area for all of us. if you rely on b.a.r.t., you'll notice a big change on monday. trains will run an hour later, because of oversize seismic retro fitting. the change will affect about 2900 commuters.

in the east terrifying trip to the bank when four men robbed a wells fargo and took hostages in pleasantonl here's david louie. >> reporter: you can see employees consoling each other after three or four men walked in to rob the bank. the suspects took three hostages, who were outside at an atm and forced them inside. one of them was the father of assignment editor dave russo, who describes the conversation during the holdup. >> one of the people forced inside of the bank made the comment to the suspects, don't hurt me. i have family. and the suspect shot back quickly at that victim, well, we have families, too. >> reporter: the suspects took off in a white gmc yukon.

an officer pursued them, and shots were fired from a rifle through the back window of the yuk yukon, striking the front windshield of the patrol car. >> shots fired, shots fired. coming from the rear passenger window. >> reporter: the officer received a minor injury and treated at a local hospital. the suspects then carjacked an suv and got away. police blocked off several streets. residents were surprised by the incident. >> that is my bank. so i bank there all the time. >> reporter: what do you think about somebody coming up with a gun? >> i feel like i'm in a movie or something. that's strange. nothing ever happens like that here. >> reporter: and it did happen tonight in pleasanton. police are reminding us that the three respects are still at large and considered armed and dangerous. the fbi is still working here on

the investigation. and we are happy to report that the three bank customers, the hostages who were held at gunpoint, are doing okay. david louie, "abc7 news." a police dog helped officers end a standoff in campbell. "abc7 news" was on avenue. a man tossed coffee on a truck driver and thesimployeesety after they called police. this is not a drill. that's the warning the city of seattle is sending out tonight. >> there is a major winter storm bringing heavy snow to the pacific northwest tonight. seattle is expecting accumulations of six to eight inches. >> grocery stores in the area have been jammed with people stocking up for the storm and they found empty shelves and long lines.

done yet. there's a winter storm warning in the hills of lake county until 4:00 p.m. sunday. you can see why. that's a mix of rain and snow right now and they will be seeing a few inches of snow towards the weekend. there's a colder storm that's coming after this one winds down. this is the same one that's bringing heavy snow to the pacific northwest. it's going to track southward over land, so limited in moisture, but that's the same snowstorm that could bring us some snow at low elevations here in the baby sunday. snowing in the sierra. all roads leading to tahoe requiring chains except for 50. hold off on travel. whiteout conditions in the mountains. expect up to five feet for the peaks. and the back country of the sierra under an avalanche watch heavy snow and gusty winds right now. 30s, 40s, this is a cold system. south beach cameras showing you
