it's saturday, february 9th, good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris the weather. let's start with meteorologist lisa argen. >> we have a one on our storm impact scale. you know it's cold out there. wintery mix in the forecast for today and tomorrow, especially tomorrow, so we've got some showers, a few brief downpours and a chance of a thunderstorm as this cold air mass is overhead so you notice the purples there or the pinks, that's where we're looking at a little rain-snow mix around mt. hamilton, scattered showers, temperatures are chilly and you can see the snow in the

mountains. it is 45 in san leandro, 41 in union city and elsewhere, numbers are in the from santa rosa, 43 in pacifica so io is a raw feeling out there with a quarter mile visibility in livermore so as we go through the rest of the day, notice upper 40s will do it until about 10:00 and then by 2:00, we're looking at the rain becoming more scattered around the bay area, more focused from oakland to hayward and then showers continue to move through with those low snow levels. we'll talk in detail about your weekend in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. an alert now for drivers. some lanes of the richmond-san rafael bridge are closed for repairs. this comes after chunks of concrete fell earlier this week. let's take a live look at the bridge, not much traffic this morning but crews started shutting down lanes at 9:00 last night. abc7 news reporter jobina

fortsen has more. >> reporter: as a tow truck driver, he finds himself going over the bridge multiple times a day so when the concrete came down on thursday, he was in the thick of it. >> yesterday created quite a lot of chaos, especially on this side of the bay. >> reporter: caltrans isn't planning to shut down the whole highway but they'll replace the welded plate with a larger metal plate. >> i appreciate the fact that they're doing it at night because shutting it down in the middle of the day like that makes my job harder, i'm sure makes your job harder, makes everyone's job is a little bit harder than it should be. >> reporter: the repair is concentrating on the expansion joint. an expansion joint caused the problem. it was worn down from heavy traffic. >> when i was driving back home yesterday i was pretty cautious, looking around just in case something else did happen.

>> reporter: caltrans assists the bridge is safe. the repairs could impact saturday travel as well but the comuters don't mind as long as this kind of back-up doesn't happen again. permanent repairs to the bridge will begin on monday, reporting in richmond, abc7 new >> abc7 news met the driver whose vehicle was struck by the falling debris. graham edwards of sonoma was lucky the chunks only damaged his bumper. if it were seconds later, they might have crashed through the windshield. edwards happened to be looking up and saw the falling debris moments before impact. >> i would say eight or ten pieces. >> raining? >> a small bucket's worth of -- there was a fair amount of it falling down, yes. >> edwards said he felt lucky enough after the incident to buy his first ever lottery ticket. this b.a.r.t. station in san francisco is open after a

stabbing last night. police responded to a fight on a train at 16th and mission around 7:30 last night. one person was taken to the hospital. police have a person of interest in custody. the station was closed as police investigated. federal investigators are trying to figure out what happened when a gas pipeline exploded in san francisco. the ntsb plans to develop a timeline of weapons's events and conduct follow-up interviews. one thing investigators will be looking into is why it took more than two hours to shut off the gas. a third party breached the pg&e pipeline at parker avenue. the ntsb decided to investigate because of the extent of the damage. >> we were able to secure three or four -- three to four feet of the pipeline that we may be sending back to our lab in d.c. for further evaluation. >> the california public utilities commission is also conducting an investigation.

thankfully, no one was hurt but several buildings were damaged. abc7 news reporter shows us the businesses that were impacted. >> reporter: for the last two years, sean and brittany have made hong kong lounge 2 their second home. >> we've probably spent most time with them than we have with anyone else in san francisco. they know our order by heart. >> reporter: at first, they tell me that dim sum was their selling point but with time, the str staff and cooks became their friends. >> they were one of the first families we experienced in san francisco. >> reporter: so much so, this saturday, they had a reservation, no abruptly cancelled by the gasline explosion that damaged multiple buildings. >> after we saw the news, we started gofundme, put together a story and we just started reaching out to everybody we knew in san francisco. >> reporter: so far, the couple has raised over $2,000. their goal, to hopefully surpass the $10,000 mark. >> oh, goodness. we just kind of want the doors to be back open.

we hope the best for them during this hard time. >> reporter: the second building directly affected by the fire is the huckleberry youth programs. >> there's water damage, all three floors are damaged completely. the building's unusaable. >> reporter: the last two days, they have gotten calls from multiple businesses in the area ready to extend a helping hand. >> we have agencies, our peer agencies in the community, who have stepped up and said, we have office space, if you need something, you know, come and let us know. >> reporter: going back to that reservation of sean and brittany, they're still planning to come back to hong kong lounge today but this time around to look for the workers and give them the funds they've collected so far. in san francisco, abc7 news. abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area by looking for improvements and solutions. that includes public transportation. long-awaited sight for commuters. b.a.r.t. trains will be running between fremont and san jose and while it will be some time before riders are able to get on

board, testing along the new extension begins next week. more from the station. >> reporter: testing on the long awaited ten mile line to san jose starts next week. the santa clara valley transportation authority is heading up current testing. b.a.r.t. will take control later this year. >> there's been some technical difficulties that have delayed the opening of it, but this is a good step forward. >> reporter: council member emphasizes the extension ais a big deal for the bay area, built in his district, a distance way at fremont b.a.r.t., commuters are hoping it will develop a better sense of timing. >> i'm going to take a lyft to san jose so it would be pretty convenient. >> reporter: daily b.a.r.t. rider monique says the extension would ease her track to see family in the south bay, travelingg to stop for lyft is leaving her out in the cold. how much does that put you back? >> it's about $30 and like an >> reporter: when trains finally carry travelers along the bay area extension, ridership is estimated to start at 23,000 a

seismic retrofitting inside the transbay tube. this change will affect about 2,900 commuters. buses will stop at selected stations to get riders across the bay. you can find the new schedule online at abc7 news.com, just search b.a.r.t. 5:09 is our time and developing now, a dangerous winter storm is hitting the pacific northwest. this is new video from the seattle area. you can see cars stuck on the roads as the snow started falling yesterday. accumulations could reach 8 inches in some areas. hundreds of flights at seatac have been cancelled or delayed. this is the second round of snow this week. many people stocked um on essentials. at some grocery stores, customers cleared the shelves and waiting in some very long checkout lives. yosemite national park is reporting significant damage from the snowfall earlier this week. the park says about 50 cabins and another 50 to 75 employee housing units were either damaged or destroyed. all visitor services at half

yes, there is. no, there's not. yes there is. no, there's not! okay. all-new colgate total. do more for your whole mouth. good morning, everyone. time right now 5:13. we're taking a look outside this morning. slick roads to start. we'll get a check of the full accuweather forecast from lisa argen in just a little bit. first, in the east bay, a terrifying trip to the bank for customers in pleasanton. four men robbed a wells fargo, took hostages and shot at a police officer. this happened on hopyard road. >> reporter: you can see bank employees consoling each other after three and possibly four men in hoodies walked into the bank to rob it. the suspects even took three hostages who were outside at an atm and forced them inside at gunpoint. one of them was the father of

abc7 news assignment editor dave russo, who describes a conversation during the hold-up. >> one of the people forced inside of the bank hid -- had made the comment to the suspects, don't hurt me, i have a family. and the suspect shot back quickly at that victim, well, we have families too. >> reporter: the suspects took off in a white gmc yukon. a police officer pursued them into the neighborhood. shots were fired from a rifle through the back window of the yukon, striking the patrol car's front windshield and hood. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> copy shots fired. >> fluorescent colored shirt covering the rear passenger window. back window shot out. >> reporter: the officer received a minor injury and was treated at a local hospital. the suspects then carjacked a smaller honda suv and got away. police blocked off several streets as they looked for shell

casings casings and other evidence. >> that is my bank. i bank there all the time. yeah. >> reporter: what do you think about somebody coming up with a gun? >> well, i mean, i feel like i'm in a movie or something. that's strange. i mean, nothing ever happens like that in pleasanton. >> reporter: the three suspects are at large and considered armed and dangerous. the fbi is still working here on the investigation. and we are happy to report that the three bank customers, the hostages who were held at gunpoint, are doing okay. in pleasanton, david louie, abc7 news. authorities are warning north bay residents about a phone scam. callers are asking for money. police say the calls show up on the caller i.d. as the police department's business line. the calistoga police department says officers will never call to request money over the phone on behalf in petaluma.

sonoma county wildlife r veterinarians at uc davis has to euthanize the eagle after discovering it had lead poisoning. it is a federal crime to harm eagless. in the east bay, vets are trying to figure out how a beaver ended up in a busy street. the animal was rescued in martinez last week. leslie brinkley has more from lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital in walnut creek. >> she's got a small trackture of the tail. >> reporter: there are plenty of beaver x-rays veterinarians are poring over. nibbling on willow branches, this beaver looks content, but a week ago, it was found looking dazed in the middle of this busy intersection along alhambra avenue in martinez. a good samaritan wrapped the beaver in a blanket and rushed it to lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital. >> because she was found in the road, we were concerned she could have been hit by a car, she could have head trauma from being hit by a car.

there's also a concern about was there something else going on and that's why she wandered out. >> reporter: this beaver is a young, basically teenaged female. she should be afraid of me right now. so they're concerned about vision problems and neurological problems. her condition is guarded. she may not survive. the martinez beavers famously made headlines in 2007 when they built a dam on alhambra creek in the middle of the urban downtown. an effort to save them and prevent flooding put martinez on the national conservation map. >> we were in national geographic this year the martinez beaver story is a big part of our history. >> reporter: heidi started a nonprofit called worth a dam. there are t-shirts and an annual beaver festival. at their peak, there were seven beavers but they've moved upstream to a more excluded spot and now it's believed there are only three left. could the one found in the road be one of them or is it an

outsider moving into the area? doctors are working to save its life. in walnut creek, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. good saturday morning to you, a live look here from live doppler 7 and we do have scattered showers around the bay area, even some pink representing a wintery mix as we go in a bit closer in the north bay. along the coast here, balinas and also up toward the san pablo bay, yes, looking at a few scattered showers down through san francisco and the roadways certainly wet. here around mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, also looking at some of that snow. in the sierra nevada, heavy snow in south lake tahoe. temperatures in the mid 20s and our winter storm warning here continues throughout the next several days and also into lake county where we're looking at 8 to 12 inches of snow a up to 2 feet for the peak so limited visibility. we have a couple of systems coming in. the moisture will be limited

with the system on sunday, but nevada into moayo 4 feet, possiy 5 feet and as we look at the cities here, the snow areas, tahoe city, the resorts, 23 inches, 3 feet in kirkwood so it keeps piling up here. unbelievable. so, certainly welcome news but next week, when we get into more snow, you'll notice that the total's getting higher. hopefully you're going to stay with a cold system and not add rain to that. 109% of normal, 106% of normal pand statewide doing just fine n the mountains. certainly been a banner year for us and right now we're looking at those cold temperatures with 42 on the peninsula, 40 in san jose. that is cold for you with 39 in napa, 34 in concord. live look outside san francisco, it looks quiet but the roadways are damp. coolest showers today. the wintery mix, you saw it on

the radar there. also but we'll have less moisture and looking at an unsettled weather pattern into next week. let's go through it hour-by-hour, your weekend, and you'll notice that we start out with just a few showers, but as we go through the mid-morning hours and th afternoon, notice we get more rain in the north bay. 1:00 in santa rosa, looking at the showers, but then by 5:00, 6:00, it's a pretty damp evening out there and it's cold. you'll see the cooler weather moving into the north bay, so there's where we could have that snow on cobb mountain and then as we go through the rest of the overnight hours, we see less moisture but it's certainly colder out there. we're going to add up the totals from today, saturday, we're looking at anywhere from about a third of an inch and then we add in sunday, about a half inch so not huge amounts but still enough to keep your weekend wet and damp. 54 today in palo alto, 52 in san francisco and if you're headed over to oracle park today for giants fest, bundle up, it's

she was ordering a bouquet of roses online ended up getting one rose and an assortment of other flowers instead. she contacted "7 on your side's" michael finney for help. >> reporter: linda royce spends time in the garden in concord enjoying the fruits of her lemon tree. gardening is also something her daughter, barbara, enjoys, so for barbara's birthday, linda sent her flowers. >> and i thought, oh, my mom sent me flowers on my birthday, that's so sweet. >> reporter: linda received the picture from her daughter of the flowers that were delivered. >> there's one rose. there was a bunch of carnations, a lily, and a gerbera daisy. >> reporter: she says this is the picture she saw online of the bouquet she ordered. >> all roses and oak leaves. >> reporter: she called flowershopping.com to let them

thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the weather conditions where you live. >> hi, chris. it's somewhat quiet this morning. things are going to get more active later on today. we're bringing in our storm impact scale, a 1 for you today, allowing for scattered showers, maybe even the risk of a thunderstorm and that wintery mix with the cold temperatures still with us and a storm exiting today, another one coming in later. you can see just a little bit of green on the screen here from highway 1 over to mill valley. richmond and hercules, the showers continue to sink to the south and east and as we look east of milpitas in the hills, a little bit of snow there, more snow in the mountains, several advisories to pass on to you and

numbers in the low 40s. 46 in fremont as well as san francisco is 42 up in the north bay and in lake county, that's where we could see some snow coming down and boy, we're looking at an active pattern in the mountains. it's going to be a chilly day, the rain increases throughout the afternoon. happening now, crews are making adjustments to what was a temporary fix on the richmond san rafael bridge. here's a closer look at our richmond san rafael bridge camera showing 580. one lane of traffic will be closed in each direction until 7:00 this morning. chunks of concrete fell from the bridge thursday. crews shut it down for 10 hours, backing up traffic for miles. the abc7 news i-team confirmed an expansion joint worn down from heavy traffic caused the problem. this morn engineers are putting a larger metal plate over that expansion joint. >> i appreciate the fact that they're doing it at night. because shutting it down in the

middle of the day like that makes my job harder, i'm sure makes your guys' job harder, makes everyone's job a little bit harder than it should be. >> drivers can see another round of lane closures at 9:00 tonight if more work needs to be done. developing news, amazon ceo jeff bezos is accusing the parent company of the "national enquirer" of extortion and blackmail. now federal prosecutors are getting involved. here's abc's lindsey davis. >> reporter: federal prosecutors are now reviewing those bombshell allegations by jeff bezos, who claims the nation"th enquirer" attempted to extort and blackmail him by releasing pictures. the tabloid saying they acted lawfully and what they called negotiations with the amazon founder. but after he says he was threatened with those photos, he decided to go public, posting a lengthy blog which allegedly contained e-mails between him and representatives of the

"national enquirer," leaving in embarrassing details, writing, of course i don't want personal photos published but i also don't want to participate in their well known practice of blackmail, political favors and political corruption. it all started last month when just days after bezos and his wife announced they were divorcing after 25 years, private text messages with his alleged mistress, lauren sanchez, were published by the "enquirer." bezos, who also owns "the washington post," which reports extensively on the trump administration, hired his own investigation, he says, to determine how the tabloid got pictures of him and if they were politically motivated, referencing david pecker's close relationship with the president who has frequently gone after bezos. >> "washington post," i have to tell you, i have respect for jeff bezos, but he bought "the washington post" to have political influence. >> reporter: bezos says he started receiving threatening e-mails referring to those

personal photos that included a below the belt selfie and one of bezos naked wearing a white towel and a wedding ring. according to the e-mails, the company would agree not to publish, distribute, share or describe unpublished texts and photos. in exchange, bezos would stop his investigation and publicly state that he has no knowledge that the enquirer's reporting was politically motivated and one more major turn as prosecutors will now be reviewing whether the owners of the "national enquirer" violated an immunity agreement they reached with feds looking into a campaign finance violation that involved "the national enquirer" killing stories potentially damaging to the president just before the election. >> if the prosecutors in their discretion believe that a crime has been committed, that could wipe out that immunity agreement and lead to additional prosecution. >> reporter: lindsey davis, abc news, new york. now to the political crisis

in virginia. this morning, there are new calls for the lieutenant governor to resign, including one from california senator kamala harris. abc news reporter tom has more on the new sexual assault accusation against justin fairfax. >> reporter: the week began with demands that virginia governor ralph northam resign after admitting he once wore black face. it ends with calls for virginia's second in command to step down as well. >> we'll have our say. aisle confident in the truth. >> reporter: lieutenant governor justin fairfax now facing a new accusation of sexual assault. meredith watson, one of his classmates at duke, says fairfax raped her in 2000. tonight, the lieutenant governor calling the allegation demonstrably false, insisting, i have never forced myself on anyone ever. watson is the second woman to come forward this week. dr. vanessa tyson alleges fairfax forced her to perform oral sex in a hotel room at the

2004 national democratic convention. fairfax says their encounter was consensual. the lieutenant governor calling for a full investigation to clear his name. abc news, new york. new this morning, results of the president's second annual check-up are in. physician sean connolly says he is in very good health. connolly performed a medical check-up yesterday with 11 board certified specialists. details like weight and blood pressure were not released. dr. connolly said the 72-year-old would likely remain healthy for the duration of his presidency. today, oakland teachers are gathering to take notes on the los angeles teachers strike as they prepare to possibly hold their own. students from six oakland high schools staged a sickout yesterday to show support for teachers threatening to strike. some students stayed home. others marched toiation will ho a public forum to discuss strike tactics. oakland teachers are asking for
