peop police got a call from a taco bell employee last night saying a driver was stopped in the driver lane, slumped over. when the police arrived they said the driver was initially unconscious and had a gun in his lap. police say the driver started to move and despite warnings to keep his hands up, went for the gun. officers fired, killing the man. an investigation is now under way. we have new details this morning on a plane that crashed at mt. diablo. the plane, seen in this new video, was discovered yesterday afternoon just hours after it crashed. officials with the faa will arrive sometime today to investigate. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan has more. >> reporter: investigators are combing through thick brush, trying to reach the plane. >> the only reason we were able to find it at the time we found it was the clouds had lifted high enough to see it. >> reporter: in an e-mail to abc 7 news, the faa confirms the

small single engine mooney plane took off from the airport friday night. mt. diablo park rangers say they only learned of the crash saturday afternoon. >> it's very unusual to have planes crash at mt. diablo. it's a remote area. the park closes at sunset. if it went down last night, there would be no one to see or hear it go down. >> reporter: you can see how tall the bush is that the plane crashed into and how dense and thick this fog is, which is making this investigation so difficult. along with the poor weather conditions, they aren't ruling out possible mechanical failure. investigators haven't identified the pilot but believe he was the only one on board. the crash site is blocked off with the pilot's dead body still inside the plane. park rangers have been ordered not to remove the body until faa and ntsb teams conduct their investigation. >> they thought it was unusual and wanted it to be treated as a

crime scene until they could get on scene. >> reporter: they'll be back on sunday. anser hassan, abc 7 news. gunfire erupted at an east oakland strip mall, sending people running for cover. a red suv was peppered by bullets at the strip mall at interstate 880 just before 5:00 yesterday. no one was hurt. police responded to the mall but the shooter was able to get away. investigators did not release a motive for the shooting. in san francisco, the ntsb continues to investigate last week's natural gas pipeline explosion triggering a massive fire. yesterday investigators met with the heavy equipment operators who are believed to have ruptured the pipeline. federal safety investigators say they also visited pg&e's gas pipeline control center in san ram ramon. the team was able to see what pse&g crews saw when it caught fire. they'll take a closer look at how long it took for the utility to shut off the natural gas. >> in the 1981 accident that the

ntsb investigated, it took pg&e nine hours and ten minutes to shut off the pipeline. in 2008, it was two hours and 47 minutes. in 2010 in san bruno, it was 95 minutes. >> the ntsb says it took about two hours for the gas to be shut off in this most recent case. a preliminary report is expected in the next ten to 14 days. officials with the ntsb also say they'll be looking into the credentials, background, and qualifications of the excavation crew. cal osha has said an employee for a subcontractor was operating an excavator when the gas line rupture. the subcontractor said in part, kilford continues to support all authorities in this investigation and will actively contribute to it in the search for answers and in the interests of improving safety. maintenance at the caldecott

two passengers were killed and a suspected wrong way driver crashed on highway 1. it's the second deadly crash involving a wrong way driver in the bay area in less than a week. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> reporter: there is little left of this toyota prius, reduced to a twisted chunk of metal. the chp says its driver was going the wrong way on highway 101, traveling south in northbound lanes when it crashed head on with a chevy pickup at clarendon road at 4:15 a.m. >> two passengers died on the scene. the driver of the prius was transported to the hospital. >> reporter: the driver of the pickup and his passenger were injured and taken to the hospital. it's unknown where exactly the prius driver got onto highway 1.

but the chp says he may have been driving the wrong way for miles. >> we do believe that it was closer to 280. >> that's actually fine, you can barely see it at night. >> reporter: alana butler isn't surprised someone may have accidentally got onto highway 1 the wrong way. >> as you know, those signs are not lit, the "do not enter." people don't really understand. if you're not from this area, it could be battd. >> reporter: last sunday, a suspected wrong way driver took the life of a father of seven from concord. he was an uber driver. his passengers were injured. the wrong way driver was also killed. >> the driver of the prius was listed in critical condition at san francisco general hospital. chp says two people riding in that car were not wearing a seatbelt. authorities don't know if drugs or alcohol played a part. the investigation is still under way. in pacifica, cornell barnard, abc 7 news.

happening today, former governor jerry brown will be in the south bay today for the lunar new year. he'll be celebrating the year of the pig at the san jose dynasty restaurant. san jose assembly member evan low will be at the event. the celebration starts at 5:30 tomorrow. brown completed his final term as governor just over a month ago. a little rain over oracle park yesterday wasn't enough to dampen fan >> reporter: baseball season is upon us. >> we love the giants and i have to get the little one involved. >> the excitement here at the park always makes it feel like we're getting back into baseball season. >> this is a great time of the year, you have the energy and excitement, all the players are getting together for the first time as a it's incredible. >> go giants! >> i came out here with the weather. i didn't really care about the

the ultima pass, mt. diablo, snow for you. further down the prince to el granada, looking for snow. we'll continue to rotate through for the next three or four hours. we'll look for the snow in the sierra nevada with the winter storm warning right on through tomorrow. and looking at, so far, a couple of feet. and about a half a foot left to go there in the mountains. a live look outside and you'll notice that the sun is out melting some of that snow. 42 in san francisco as well as san jose with 38 in morgan hill. and from our roof camera, it is breezy as well. so certainly a cold start to the second half of your weekend. 37 santa rosa, 41 in petaluma and livermore. we're looking at temperatures colder this morning, from 3 to 10 degrees colder. the mountains, the resorts, looking at dicey travel on the

roadways. with seven inches left, expected in kirkwood. the hills in south bay, a beautiful view. i think everyone has been able to take advantage of what has come down through the overnight hours. the cold morning showers left with us for the next few hours. it will be chilly but dry this afternoon and more rain is expected as we go into the week ahead. 95% normal in san jose, 92% of normal since october 1st. about 90% in the city, with 85% in oakland and mountain view 82%. so doing just fine in the rainfall department. here we are at 10:30, and notice, still looking at the accumulating snow and a few showers that will rotate through the bay. this is 1:00. can't rule them out right on through the early afternoon. then by about 2:30, most of the bay is dry except for the south bay. perhaps a renegade shower there. and the amounts will be very light. we are looking at just a couple of hundredths between now and the end of the day. you can see the blue representing that.

as we go through another day and a half, we'll enjoy a bit of a reprieve from the rain, because it has been with us on and off, and we like the off, so we can catch up when more heavy rain is to come for the week ahead, and certainly the middle of the week. 54 in concord today, 52 san francisco. breezy on the coast. tomorrow morning, no problems. it should be dry, maybe a few showers in the afternoon. and then as we get through your you remember tuesday, another dry day. so we have two mostly dry days. look what happens by late tuesday, 9:00, rain in the north bay. and for your wednesday morning commute, we're painting it soggy. this one looks like a heavier system. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 1 on our storm impact scale for the early afternoon. then we're dry the rest of the day into monday most of tuesday. download our accuweather app, really lit up with the pretty colors this morning. a break on thursday. looks like more heavy rain friday and saturday.

chp has shutdown interstate 80 from colfax to the nevada state line due to visibility. these images of the scene and kingveil were taken in the last half hour. crews are working to clear that snow and the road will be closed. the chp is encouraging people to use chains and drive safely. "the national inquirer"'s parent company facing new allegations, more big names accusing ami of making threats and attempts at intimidation. abc 7 reporter lana zak has the story. >> reporter: there are more allegations against "the national inquirer" and its publisher, ami, run by david pecker, a long time friend and ally of president trump. investigative journalist ronan farrow acknowledges while he was looking into "the national inquirer"'s relationship with the president, he received similar threats to what bezos

outlines in his blog post. he says ami urged him to "stop digging or we'll ruin you." actor terry cruz says after this interview with "gma," another ami publication threatened him with a false story about prostitutes, even allegedly creating fake receipts. he claimed they backed off after he called their bluff. >> this is big trouble. i think ami is panicking. >> reporter: federal prosecutors are trying to determine if the tabloid company violated its immunity deal made after feds looked into possible campaign finance violations that involved the tabloid killing stories potentially damaging to donald trump before the election. as a condition of immunity, ami was required to commit no crimes whatsoever for three years. that's now in question after allegations that ami attempted to extort and blackmail bezos by threatening to release compromising photos and texts between the billionaire and his alleged mistress lauren sanchez.

according to bezos, ami demanded he back off from his investigation of the tabloid and issue what bezos called a false public statement about ami's political motivation. >> on abc's "this week," george stephanopoulos sat down with ami ceo david pecker. he said ami's negotiation with bezos was not blackmail. >> how is that not extortion? >> bezos and ms. sanchez knew who the source was. any investigator knew who the source was. it was not the white house. it was not saudi arabia. and the libel that was going out there slamming ami was that this was all a political hatchet job sponsored by either a foreign nation or somebody politically in this country. >> the attorney said that bezos' claim that the story and the photos were politically motivated came after the first story. he also said that the source they had for the story and

liz. tara palmieri, abc news, the white house. police in southern california have uncovered an underground shooting range at the home of a known gang member. the underground range was accessed through a manhole inside the home. police in fontana say along with ammunition, they seized a 100-round drum for an ar-15 rifle. those are illegal in california. several suspects were arrested during a raid of the home. caught on camera, a car crashes through the front doors of a police department lobby. this happened in san pedro just before 5:00 a.m. yesterday. take a look, a woman was driving with her baby when she smashed through the glass doors of the station and into the lobby. an officer begins talking to her. but then she backs out. police believe she may have been driving under the influence. a source says she was upset the station was not open the last time she stopped by. prince philip is giving up his driver's license voluntary, after the 97-year-old british

east bay hills camera. you can see traffic right now passing on the right shoulder, moving very slowly. it appears multiple vehicles were involved in this crash. as you'll recall, maintenance repairs were being made in the tunnel earlier, although it's unclear if that led to the accident. we'll continue following this for you, and bring you more details on air and online on abc7news.com. all the snow in the mountains led to extended vacation for guests at one mountain resort. snow pretty much buried the sierra nevada resort and spa located in yosemite. guests and staff were stuck there for five days due to last week's storms. new this morning, hundreds of people in the pacific northwest took advantage of the snowmageddon there with a major snowball fight. as you can see, plenty of people made use of all that fresh powder in tacoma, washington. the event was put together by a woman the day before, hoping to see a large scale snowball fight. more than 3,000 people showed their interest on facebook and

jose, parts of the south bay, you'll notice around campbell, prospect road looking at some showers as well as blossom hill road and edenvale. there is the snow, highway 17. taking you to the north bay, offshore we have showers here. we've been dry for a while now in the north bay but the rotation with that cold air and that next impulse still bringing in some morning showers. over into the east bay from mt. hamilton to mt. diablo. the rain/snow mix, livermore awfully slick out there. you'll notice we still have activity and moisture, some radar will be filling in throughout the next couple of hours for still some morning rain out there. as we look at the sierra nevada, boy, you heard about it, tough to get there. in fact the roads are closed, and we're looking at that winter storm warning through tomorrow. sunny spot here, sfo, where not snow around the peninsula, but

in the north bay, beginning to melt here. ous sig ot. tam. there early on, 37 santa rosa, 42 in fairfield, 44 in concord. 24-hour temperature change, we're looking for that to help us with the snow early on, 5 degrees cooler in napa, 6 degrees colder in san jose. there's the activity in the mountains. if you're there, lucky you, you get to enjoy that. otherwise you'll be there for a while, until that winter storm warning expires. cold showers throughout the morning hours lasting until 1:00, 2:00 in the south bay. chilly about a dry afternoon for most. looking at that unsettled weather pattern for next week. this one today is a 1 on our storm impact scale for the next few hours. that wintry mix, can't rule it out in the upper elevations. you see it here, 1:00, up towards clover dale, over into mt. hamilton. by 1:00 we're still looking at the activity in the south bay. and it's going to be 2:00 or
