2020 rolls around. lady gaga won three trophies. we'll have a complete wrap-up ahead. those are some of our top stories on this monday, february 11th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." so much to get to, breaking down, you know, all the big news from grammys, the grammys, the big night in music. we begin this half hour with not one but two winter storms hitting the u.s. >> one from texas and minnesota to the atlantic, and the western storm has two parts from the inland mountains and the pacific northwest. >> and even hawaii is not immune. huge waves are rolling ashore. temperatures overnight are only in the 60s. >> the 60s. mild 60s. on the mainland it's colder and snowing along the pacific northwest coast. >> and seattle schools are closed today. let's get more from the weather

from abc's rob marciano. >> reporter: old man winter working overtime with several storms hitting the country, one pummeling the west with snow, ice and wind and with two more storms in the pipeline. washington state rushing to recover from a record-setting snowfall. nearly 11 inches in seattle so far this month, the most snow the normally mild emerald city has seen in 70 years. roads across the state turned into skating rinks, while the driver of this car needed to be rescued from the drifts. 60-mile-per-hour winds toppling trees north of seattle, knocking out power to 140,000 at one point. portland also struggling after nearly five inches of snow there. vehicles going nowhere on some icy roads. tow ropes getting a workout. moving east it's winter whiplash. wild swings in temperatures leaving this entire community in illinois caked in ice. these cars marooned in snow that

melted, then refroze. in wisconsin a blast of snow and then this multi-car pileup. ahead of a major winter storm threatening millions in the midwest all the way to new england as we start the workweek. snow, sleet and rain impacting the rush from d.c. to philadelphia and pittsburgh. a more potent storm developing for monday night from chicago in through the mississippi and ohio river valleys where flood watches are posted, and that area of precip will get into the new york and philadelphia area tuesday morning for a messy commute with sleet and snow. then to boston, they could get a half foot or so of snow. meanwhile, another one, actually two systems rolling into the pacific northwest where it's likely to be a record setting snow month in seattle. rob marciano, abc news, new york. >> seattle getting hammered with that snow. ov>>he ithitting other roblock government is set to shutdown again. >> border security negotiations

have broken down on the cap of the number of migrants officials can detain. president trump is making another trip to texas with no compromise in sight to the promised wall. abc's dara has more. >> reporter: as the february 15th deadline looms, talks appear to be at an impasse. president trump venting that lawmakers are getting nowhere close to his $5.7 billion demand or a border wall tweeting they are offering very little money for the desperately needed border wall. his chief of staff warns there could be another shutdown. >> if you end up someplace in the middle, what you probably see is a president say, yeah, okay, and then i will go and find the money someplace else. >> reporter: lawmakers also disagreeing over the numbers of beds available for undocumented imgrants in detention centers. number hoping to lim agessi deny pe a deal wo reached by monday t sems unlikely. are aver the

place. i think the problem here is it has become an ego negotiation. >> reporter: on saturday, a democratic delegation traveled to el paso where they received a briefing from federal law enforcement. >> we came to learn how should we invest the american taxpayers' money. >> reporter: president trump also set to visit el paso monday where he will host an evening rally but there are no plans for him to visit the border this trip, as the border security battle drags on many are worried. >> seeing another shutdown a couple days away on the horizon is scary for anybody. >> reporter: 800,000 federal workers could, once again, but furloughed or forced to work without pay. abc news, new york. the mystery over who gave racy pictures of bezos could be solved. the attorney of the ceo of the tabloid says a reliable source

provided images. multiple reports say sanchez, the brother of bezos' mistress. sanchez also has ties to people within the orbit of bezos' rival, president trump. police were calling this a senseless killing. the 24-year-old was shot in an alley outside his home. police charged five boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16. they say the kids first robbed him of his wallet but shot him when he refused to give up his car keys. this pass interference during an nba game is no longer a laughing matter. it happened twice during an indiana pacers game giving rise to many jokes and health officials say anybody that touched the bat with bare skin is at risk of rabies since the bat was never caught, nobody knows if it was infected. so far there are no reports of any contact. the most decorated skier in

the man in line to succeed northam -- northam asked about the situation of sexual assault. governor northam asked about the accusation. >> if these accusations are determined to be true he won't have any options but to resign. >> reporter: at this time, do you think he will resign? >> that's going to be a decision he needs to make. >> reporter: a woman says fairfax forced her to perform oral sex in 2004. another woman says fairfax raped her while at duke in 2000. both women said they would testify if there's an impeachment hearing. >> my client felt a moral and civic duty to come forward. >> reporter: in his latest statement, fairfax says i did not sexually assault or rape meredith watson, vanessa tyson or anybody else and is calling for the fbi to investigate. >> a message for citizens of virginia? >> we'll have our say.

>> reporter: it would make a complex situation even worse. the virginia constitution doesn't explain how to fill the vacancy, so a massive political fight would likely ensue. zachary kiesch. abc news, richmond, virginia. >> our thanks to zachary. sticking with politics, talks over border security stalled as the white house refuses to rule on the the possibility of another government shutdown by the end of the week. >> congressional negotiators clashed sunday over demands of democrats to limit the number of undocumented immigrants to be detained. there's still no deal on funding for the president's border wall. the president is heading back to the border today. president trump is holding a rally in el paso, texas. in mexico, the four migrants from el salvador tried to swim across the rio grande into the u.s. the men nearly made it, but were forced to turn back after being spotted by u.s. security patrol agents. security on this stretch of border has been tight as the trump administration cracks down on illegal entry into the u.s.

amy klobuchar is running for president. the president mocked klobuchar on her stance over global warming announcing it was bad timing because she looked like a snowman standing in a blizzard. she tweeted back that she looks forward to debating the president about climate change and then got personal, wondering how his hair would fair in a blizzard. she did not mention the president by name during her announcement. she promised to represent every american. >> i am running for every parent who wants a better world for their kids. i am running for every student who wants a good education. for every senior who wants affordable prescription drugs. >> klobuchar responded to a report that she mistreats her staff. she acknowledged she can be tough but pointed out she has many staffers that has worked for her for years. and we are closer to finding out who gave the private pictures of amazon's ceo to "the enquirer." multiple reports say the focus

is on the brother of jeff bezos' mistress, a man who happens to back one of bezos' big rivals, president trump. here's abc's lana zak. >> reporter: the attorney for pecker, head of a.m.i. is denying the "national enquirer" tried to blackmail jeff bezos, the billionaire and his alleged mistress, lauren sanchez. >> it's extortion and not blackmail. the story was given to the "national enquirer" by a reliable source that had given information to the "national enquirer" for seven years. >> reporter: according to bezos, the tabloid threatened to publish naked photos unless he stopped his own personal investigation into who revealed the details of his private life. >> i am not permitted to tell you or confirm or deny who the source is. i can tell you, it's not saudi

arabia or president trump. it was a source well known to mr. bezos and miss sanchez. >> the "washington post," the billionaire suspected of his mystery could be the source. according to the paper, sanchez, who firmly denies any role in the revelation reportedly says he was told by multiple people at a.m.i. the "national enquirer" set out to do a takedown to make president trump happy. they deny it. federal prosecutors are now investigating if the tabloid violated an immunity deal after the feds looked into possible campaign finance violations just before the election. >> are you worried at all that these revelations have put the cooperation of the agreement with mr. pecker in the southern district in jeopardy? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: according to that

look for heavy snow around the great lakes region, 6-12 inches in duluth and minneapolis to name a few. for the northeast, we have a chill in place. a mixture of rain, sleet and snow creeping its way northeast. janai, kenneth? >> thank you, paul williams. the snow fell fast and furious in california over the weekend. >> five feet blanketed areas near lake tahoe. it was three feet in the town of truckee, which left residents dealing with a wall of snow. it also led to street snowboarding. >> that's pretty cool. in tacoma washington, there was a massive snowball fight. hundreds of people showed up after word of the battle spread on social media. >> i love those stories. so many people get together -- they are like big kids. >> you still are missing out on another snowball fight. >> i am. somebody send me to seattle. schools are closed in seattle because of weather. >> yeah, they don't get it that often.
