out of virginia. governor ralph northam is speaking out about the political chaos that has gripped his state and about his own political future. chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas is here with more. good morning, tom. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. governor northam is reportedly reading "roots." he plans on having conversations about race throughout the state and isn't going anywhere. as he attempts his first steps into asking for forgiveness, already a slight stumble. this morning, virginia's governor ralph northam breaking his silence, refusing calls to resign but admitting he thought about leaving office. >> yes, i have thought about resigning. but i have also thought about what virginia needs right now. i really think i'm in a position where i can take virginia to the next level. >> reporter: but critics say, even now in his first tv interview since his scandal rocked richmond, the governor still sounds out of touch. >> just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured

servants from africa landed on our shores in old point comfort, what we call now ft. monroe and while -- >> also known as slavery. >> yes. and while we have made a lot of progress in virginia, slavery has ended. schools have been desegregated. we have ended the jim crow laws, easier access to voting. it is abundantly clear we have a lot of work to do. >> reporter: his problems started with this racist photo from his medical school yearbook page. northam claims he's neither of those two men but did admit to appearing once in blackface. complicating matters, shortly after northam's admission, virginia's lieutenant governor, justin fairfax, now accused by two women of sexual assault, which he denies. political science professor vanessa tyson said fairfax forced her to perform a sex act in 2004. meredith watson says fairfax sexually assaulted her while

both were students at duke university in 2000. >> i don't think he'll have any other option but to resign if they turn out to be true. >> reporter: both women say they'll testify if there is an impeachment hearing. fairfax is denying the accusations saying both encounters were consensual. he's calling on the fbi to investigate. guys, this morning there's a new development. there was a delegate who called for impeachment. he was going to introduce articles of impeachment this morning. he has gone back and announced after hearing feedback from his colleagues, he's not going to do that. he's reversed course. a lot of colleagues want investigations first. >> those results will be brought to them later. we're going to go to washington now and the looming prospect of another government shutdown. congress has until midnight friday to strike a deal, but talke ent sig again he might go around congress by declaring a national emergency to build his border wall. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george.

negotiators had hoped to announce a deal today. the two sides are further apart this morning than they were last week. and the big sticking point isn't just the wall. democrats are now demanding to limit the number of beds at detention centers. they're hoping to force the white house to focus on detaining undocumented immigrants with criminal records instead of otherwise law-abiding immigrants. the president says the democrats are acting irrationally and the top republican negotiator in the senate is putting the odds of a deal at just 50/50. so what comes next? the president has three options. one, he can agree to another short-term fix. two, he can declare that national emergency and go around congress. many republicans are warning against that move. or three, he could shut down the government again. the white house is not ruling that out. >> there is no appetite on capitol hill for a shutdown right now. the other thing the president is doing is going to el paso tonight, trying to make a case for the wall. not clear it will help. >> reporter: yeah, the president will be in the border city of el

paso outlining his case for the wall. george, he's been using that city as an example of his exaggerated claim that the wall would dramatically reduce crime. just while the president is speaking in el paso, one on his potential 2020 rivals will also be speaking out in the city, former texas congressman beto o'rourke. he will be making his case against the president's wall. >> beto o'rourke has not yet joined the race for the white house, but two new democrats got in the race over the weekend. minnesota senator amy klobuchar braved the cold and snow on sunday. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren had her official launch on saturday. our senior national correspondent terry moran is with us. the president didn't stop his attacks on warren on saturday. >> reporter: no, he did not. two presidential hopefuls, two more attacks from president trump. get used to it. we have a long way to go now. senator elizabeth warren of massachusetts making her announcement in the old mill

town of lawrence, massachusetts, promising big structural change on behalf of the middle class. she also went after president trump and his administration, calling it the most corrupt in living history. so, of course, given their feud, that required a response from the president, apparently. he tweeted, will she run as our first native american presidential candidate, or has she decided after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? see you on the trail, liz. mocking her claims of having native american heritage. and some people saying that trail, all caps, a possible reference to the trail of tears. the forcible relocation of thousands of american indians. was the president joking about that? some say he doesn't know enough history to say that. >> it wasn't that subtle there. meantime, senator klobuchar. another woman. another democrat, offering a contrast to senator warren. >> she does. she's now the fifth woman in the race, senator amy klobuchar. she's won three big blowout races in minnesota and taken a lot of farm counties, rural

areas and other strongholds. she's a moderate. she is a pragmatic person in the senate. that apparently also required a tweeted response from the president. he came out against her. he said amy klobuchar announced she's running for president. talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice, freezing temperatures. bad timing. by the end of her speech, she looked like a snowman. the president does this a lot, confuses weather with climate, and points to a place where it might be snowing that there's no global climate change. that is not evidence, as scientists will tell you. george. >> thank you, terry. we'll get a response from senator klobuchar in our next hour. she's going to join us live for an exclusive interview. michael. >> thank you, george. and now to those dangerous storms that are coast to coast. and parts of the midwest are facing dangeusrd s 37 states are on alert stretching all the way to the northeast. ginger is tracking it all this morning. good morning, ginger.

nba fans about rabies. health officials in indiana are nowi issuing an alert for anyone who may have come into contact with the bats that took over the court at the pacers game last week. >> look at the video. this was a pacers-clippers game just from last thursday. it was interrupted twice because of a bat that got down there on the court. the health officials there in the state of indiana are saying if you were at this game and came in contact with this bat, we need you to get hold of us or a health official because of the potential for rabies. the bat is gone. so it can't be t they just want to test to make sure. we've seen this at several games over the years. we saw it over the last couple of weeks at two spurs games. take you to the first one. several bats got down and were flying around. then the next game, they made light of it. the coyote, the mascot there for the spurs, dressed as batman, went and racked down the bat. but this was manu ginobili. do not do that ever. he picked the bat up and tossed it to the side.

messages to "the national enquirer" between the world's richest man, jeff bezos, the founder of amazon and then-married father of four, and his reported girlfriend, lauren sanchez. >> the story was given to "the national enquirer" by a reliable source. it was a source that was well-known to both mr. bezos and miss sanchez. >> reporter: according to the daily beast, one possible source of the leaked text, sanchez's brother, michael. a vocal supporter of president trump. >> was it michael sanchez? >> i can't discuss who the source was. >> reporter: bezos claims "the national enquirer" and its parent company, ami, threatened to release texts and photos between bezos and sanchez. and released a statement that it was not politically motivated.

david picker's attorney exclusively denying the allegations to george this week. >> jeff bezos says extortion, blackmail. >> it absolutely is not extortion and blackmail. >> reporter: hours after the billionaire's post, journalist ronan farrow tweeted while he was looking into "the national enquirer's" relationship with president trump, ami urged him to stop digging, or we'll ruin you, which he says he did not. actor terry crews claims that after opening up on "gma" after being allegedly sexually assaulted by a high-level hollywood agent -- >> let me tell you, i have never felt more emasculated. >> reporter: -- another ami publication threatened to run a false story about him involving prostitutes. that story never ran. >> this seems like a pattern of practice according to those journalists. >> i have never heard of those allegations. i am not aware of any attempt by employees of ami to blackmail or

"this is america" becoming the first rap song to win best record trophies. he reportedly declined his invitation to perform. >> god's plan! >> reporter: drake wasn't expected to show up, but he did, and took home the award for the best rap song for his song, "god's plan." but many viewers were upset that his powerful speech appeared to be cut off. >> if there's people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow,

the fiji water girl is being sued for, and i quote, biting the hand that feeds her. she's the model who launched 1,000 memes. kelly steinbach, the fiji water girl. she posed with bottles of water behind every star she could find. her instant internet fame even landed her an appearance in late night. >> are you the actual girl from last night? >> that's me. >> reporter: but now, fiji says her 15 minutes are up. they filed a lawsuit against steinbach. in their suit, fiji accuse her of trying to capitalize on her fleeting 15 minutes of internet fame and extort fiji because she wanted a better deal than the original $90,000 she had accepted. the company's lawsuit is a countersuit to one that she sued fiji and its parent company, saying the company was trying to capitalize on her

thomas markle giving "the mail a on sunday" a heart wrenching letter written by his daughter. after markle had given ill-advised interviews in which he had been critical of both meghan and harry. in extracts of the letter meghan reportedly wrote her father, your actions have broken my heart into a million little pieces. >> while the purpose of meghan's letter was very much to repair the relationship with her father, she knew in her heart of hearts that this was going to be released to the papers. thomas has a record of this. this is exactly the man she knows. so many of the things in the letter were written with the public in mind. she very much wanted to set the record straight. >> reporter: the duchess pleaded with her father, if you love me as you tell the press you do, please stop lying. please stop creating so much pain. please stop exploiting my relationship with my husband. markle telling "the mail on

sunday" he wanted the letter published now in order to set the record straight after meghan's inner circle mentioned it in a "people" magazine interview defending the duchess. interview. one of the friends saying, the duchess reached out to her father after the wedding and attempted to mend the rift. i'm so heartbroken. i love you. i have one father. please stop victimizing me through the media so we can repair our relationship. thomas markle said the letter was not so conciliatory, saying, i thought it would be an olive branch. instead, it was a dagger to the heart. he said he felt like it was a final farewell from his daughter who has not returned his call since. >> the letter being out there puts the story with her father very much in the past and she's focused on the present. >> reporter: this was meghan's last known communication with her father. the two have not spoken since the wedding and she's pregnant. so much has happened in her life. he's missing all of the moments. >> sad to see this played out publicly. thank you so much, eva. sglfrjt

good morning. i'm reggie aqui. it's 8:27. a police chase in the east bay ended when the suspect crashed into an antioch home overnight. this happened just before midnight on golden bear drive near hillcrest avenue. the homeowner said he was sleeping at the time he heard a loud boom. the truck was reportedly being chased by police and no one inside the home got hurt. hopefully a little calmer than that on the roadways. >> yeah, but we have some issues.t, southbound 101 just before state route 92, east 3rd avenue. multicar crash has cleared. some residual delays in both directions. a disabled vehicle really slowing you down here, southbound 880 around state route 84. that's blocking the center lane. >>
