live breaking news. breaking news at 5:00. disaster in the north bay. a mudslide of a home overnight and a woman having to be rescued. a neighborhood under evacuation right now. we have team coverage. we are, of course, tracking the storm that continues to just wreak havoc across the bay area this morning. including in sausalito where mike has been counting how much rain they've had. they've had, what, 5 inches in the last, what was it, 24 hours? >> 24-hour period. 5 inches. 48 hours, 4.5 inches. you throw in the wind, you have a one-two punch. you can see why the house moved and the ground gave way. that was the result and there could be more of that. even though the heaviest of the rain is behind us, everything is saturated right now. we have our gustiest winds until
5:01 am
10:00. let me show you rain totals. they're ridiculous. more than 12 inches of rain. look at santa rosa. 4.75. more, almost 7 inches in kentfield. almost 4 inches in napa. you go down to san jose where we've got about an inch. so let's talk about what's going on with the winds. we're down to 52 mile per hour gusts at sfo. it was 61 with the last hourly observation which was at 4:00. you still have the winds of 25 to 35. anywhere from san jose, liorrmvep ue,he into the north bay. that's why we'll have some damage. 'saingagain.k at sausalito where as i broaden outut live doppler 7 into a replay mode of the last hour, it's had steady light rain all through the last couple of hours as most of us have. that's going to be the case as we head throughout the morning. by the afternoon hours, we're going to start dealing with more
5:02 am
scattered showers. you can see in the santa cruz mountains, we're waiting for something to kbif way there. it's a ticking time bomb of a mudslide about to happen. we'll keep an eye on that also. today is a 2. rain and showers. potential flooding out of the thunderstorms and downpours. here's a look at san francisco. with my 12-hour planner, temperatures are in the 60s. now it got wormer overnight. once that cold front comes through this morning, kicks off that chance of thunderstorms, temperatures will drop into the low to mid-50s with thunderstorms possible all the way through 7:00. all right. it was like driving on ice this morning alexis. how is it now? >> that was because of of the wind, right, mike? >> yes. >> it was blowing it all over the roadway. unfortunately, it won't be an easy commute. southbound 680 moving along relatively well. we've got the rain we're dealing with, too. road spray is kicking up
5:03 am
reducing your visibility and seriously, you're blowing all over the road. i felt like i would fly off the bay bridge into the water. that's how windy it was. use extreme caution as you head out the door today. drive times, i know i keep saying this. deceivingly good this morning. everyone is slowing it down and taking it easy. a lot of folks deciding not to get on the roads today. if you can work from home, highly recommend that. we are filling in out of the central valley. tracy to dublin, 36 minutes for you. dublin to mission boulevard, okay there. 17. northbound 85. 101 to cupertino in the green at 16 minutes. thanks, alexis. we're going to go back to the breaking news in sausalito where a mudslide took out a home. >> reporter, amy hollyfield is at the scene with a look at the damage. that house is unrecognizable, amy. >> reporter: it is, jessica. it's right behind me. take a look. it is destroyed. came crashing down the hill. they're still worried about the stability of the situation here. it is still raining and it is very windy.
5:04 am
they just aren't sure what to expect. they have evacuated this neighborhood. they say that happened around 3:30. right away. that's why we don't see people on the streets. you were asking me about that earlier. they went door to door and got everyone out of here right away. that was a priority. the house is empty. they say it was vacant. so no one in there or hurt. but it did other homes on crescent avenue near sausalito avenue. a woman whose home was hit with the mudslide, she was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. we haven't heard of anyone else being trapped or hurt. but they are still worried about the area and checking on homes. right now, officials they have maps out and they're cross-checking every single home to make sure that they have checked on it, gotten everyone out of it and no one else needs help. the people evacuated have been taken down to the emergency operations center if they need a
5:05 am
place to stay. that way they're warm, have coffee, food and shelter. they've been told not to expect to come back home. they will not be returning here to get ready for work belon tgi about their day. they have been told this area is cut off for now. another issue they're dealingw utilities. the gas line ruptured. we can smell gas. i just asked the pg&e official here on the scene when they're going to get that cut off. he said they are on their way right now. there's also no power. if about 30 minutes ago i heard a loud pop. i asked him about that. he said it was a transformer blowing. there's no power in the area as well. they are still worried about the stability of this hillside. a lot still here to deal with. a very uncertain situation. they are really wanting to get the word out for people to avoid this area. don't come check on a friend or loved one, they're not here.
5:06 am
they don't want you in here. they're worried as people get up and get going, it's going to get crowded on this narrow road. they don't want anyone up here. back to you. >> just to kind of set the scene. this is an area where there are a lot of homes and it's very steep. it's like terraces going from road to road up the hill. >> reporter: yeah. the roads are very narrow. it's very densely populated. the homes are all very close to each other. you know, there's beautiful hills here in sausalito that grant gorgeous views. it's a lovely wonderful beautiful spot to live. but these hillsides are so soaked right now. they're worried that some of them, more could give. in one obviously already has. >> amy, as we're talking to you live, i can see that wind picking up. it looks like the rain is heavy. describe the conditions. it looks like it's getting worse as you've been out there. >> reporter: the wind is
5:07 am
horrible. brutal gusts coming through here making it difficult to even here you. that's how loud it is. it is still raining. they're very worried about what the storm could do to this area. >> however, you're safe in that area where you are right now? >> reporter: i'm sorry, jessica. i can't hear you. what did you say? >> i was asking if you feel safe and if authorities say you're safe where you are. it's probably impossible to hear me right now. >> reporter: one more time. i can't hear you. >> amy, be safe out there. we'll check in with you shortly. let's let her go and make sure she's okay in that area. that wind really picking up. >> as you heard her say, they've gone through and knocked on doors, they are cross-checking to make sure they have everyone accounted for and they have those immediate neighbors out of the area and they're going to be not returning any time soon until they are able to say that that area is safe for them to live in.
5:08 am
what a scary way to wake up in the morning. can you imagine how loud that probably was as that house was sliding into the other house next door? >> not to mention getting a knock, if you didn't hear that home come crashing down. to get a knock on your door in the middle of the night saying you have to leave immediately. this could happen to your home and initially that was the concern, that people would still be sleeping as we got to the scene. but it's nice to hear that those folks were immediately taken care of and are out of there right now. we heard amy say if there are friend or family in the area, do not help by going to the scene. they want -- authorities want people out of the immediate area. >> there's another problem that we're tracking right now. another evacuation. this time in san jose. >> reporter matt keller is live for us on glacier court near ross creek. so earlier we saw people getting out of their homes. matt, what's going on now? >> reporter: yeah. glacier drive here, they're evacuating homes. we've got somebody from that
5:09 am
area. josh you're a homeowner in this area. you come down to check out the creek. what do you think? >> it looks pretty high. i think i might stay home today and keep an eye on the house. >> reporter: what did the police say? >> they recommended that i evacuate. >> you're walking your dog twinkie here. obviously it's raining. but not so bad right now. you're going to stay home and keep an eye on it just in case. >> that's the plan. >> thank you, josh. >> reporter: thank you to twinkie. we're going to show you the creek here at cherry avenue. you can see where it's at. it's at about 7.5 feet. i talked to a worker from the city of san jose and he saw it over ten feet this morning, which is above the flood stage. once it gets to 10.5 feet, it can flood into the street on cherry avenue. that's the biggest concern for a lot of the area. the good news, he says it's receded a bit. they're concerned about upcreek. if there's rain up there, we're going to get more water down here. that's going to be a major
5:10 am
issue. we talked to another man about what he experienced when police came to his door. >> we're probably going to prepare and get everything ready to go at a moment's notice. but yeah, it's not looking like i'm going to get any work today. >> reporter: you can see we had another person evacuating her animals. she had a couple of cats and a dog. she was evacuating with her husband. it sounded like they were going to go to the willow glen community center where they have an evacuation center set up. we got an alert that residents along the guadalupe river area are being encouraged to evacuate immediately due to a threat of flooding. they do have san jose police officers going to a lot of locations out here. we heard about san jose police officers going to the elk's lodge on alma avenue. they were going to have all those people who have rvs and trucks there leave that parking lot because that parking lot can flood as well. the guadalupe river there can
5:11 am
get up there and it can flood that parking lot. obviously ross creek is the big concern. san jose -- city of san jose workers have been out here all night long monitoring it. we've seen city of san jose workers all across the city here going door to door and knocking on doors making sure people have what they need just in case they evacuated. i saw mayor sam liccardo tweeted out that he was going door to door in the neighborhood that flooded in 2017 over there by happy hollow and municipal stadium there in east san jose and making sure that everybody there was aware that if it does come time to evacuate, what they need to pack and do that. we haven't heard of issues there right now. but, of course, everybody is concerned and they're going to be checking this here and checking the stage. seeing what it's at. they repor. so we'll send it back to you. >> matt, you spoke to ma man, josh, walking his dog this morning. choosing to stay in his home.
5:12 am
we want to clarify that police and authorities recommending that folks get out of that area, right? what is your sense, are people heeding that warning or are most people choosing to stay in their homes? >> reporter: you know, we were listening to it as they were going door to door. some people were choosing to stay at home. it's interesting. because i talked to someone who lived here for 15 years. someone who went through the floods of 2017. during the floods of 2017, they said that they did have street flooding but no water actually made it to their homes. they said there was a lot more rain at thattime so they think that the city of san jose is obviously trying to make sure that they get ahead of this. make sure everybody knows and is prepared. because the last time there was some problems with getting people notified and that they were surprised when the floodwaters ended up inside their homes. now they're trying to get ahead of it in case it floods and that they have their stuff that they need. people make sure they grab
5:13 am
computers, photos, things that can't be replaced. if the home floods, there will be damage inside. they want to make sure they get the personal items out. >> given what happened at happy hollow, coyote creek, that was a disaster a couple of years ago. i can't blame them for being proactive this time. matt keller, thanks for the update. appreciate it. the difference this time and that time. matt touched upon it. the rain is lighter with this particular storm and this particular winter so far. the water was actually backing up because it couldn't fill the reservoirs anymore and they had to let the water out of them. we're not to that stage yet. but we've had .75 inches of rain in the south bay to an inch in downtown san francisco to 3 inches in los gatos. it's that drain anl that will create the flooding we'll be dealing with today. more than 5.5 inches in 4 1/2
5:14 am
hours. the winds are 24 to 45 miles per hour. both of those are destabilizing agents and the reason why the house slid down the hill. potentially could have more as the winds continue to be strong. crystal springs road down to burlingame and california drive there. here's a look. you can see the flags unfurled at the ferry building as the winds continue to come out of the southeast. notice the steady light rain and all the puddles on the embarcadero. if you're going to be out and about, we've got rain, then showers. then we've got thunderstorms possible and we've got that gale warning on the bay as winds could once again hit about 60 or 50 to 60 miles per hour from now. all the way through 3:00. so let's go round-robin and talk about the south bay. steady rain until 2:00. then we get a little bit of a break. there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. the temperatures are dropping.

everyone has been safely evacuat evacuated, they think. they're cross-checking a map to make sure they've checked on every home. it is so dark in the hills and homes so dense, so close to each other and there is wreckage. so they do have a better idea, once the sun comes up that they have thoroughly checked the area. but at this point, they think everyone has gotten out. about 13 people there right now. the police officer was telling me and a couple of pets. >> what a morning for those folks in that neighborhood. amy hollyfield we appreciate the update. thank you so much. we have a new google earth map to show you and give you a better idea of where the mudslide happened and the distance between the two streets that amy was describing. what you see there are the two kind of landmarks. sausalito boulevard and crescent avenue. important to note where 101 is and how close it is to the robin williams tunnel. it gives you an idea of the neighborhood we're talking about. this house was on sausalito
