welcome back. we continue to track breaking news of the storm damage. this is in sausalito where a mudslide destroyed a home. we are tracking the situation there where 50 homes have been evacuated because of this overnight mudslide. sergeant mike rah develop i from the marin county sheriff's department is joining us on the phone right now. >> sserg, uestn for you.
6:17 am
we spoke to someone from the marin county fire department. it was a little unclear if there was a person inside the home at the time that slid down the hill or if that person rescued was in the house that got hit. >> yes. the person that was inside the home was inside the home on sausalito boulevard which slid down on to crescent. >> so that person was in the home that slid and then did that person need to be rescued from that home? >> yes. so the house slid off of sausalito boulevard on to crescent. and then it hit another house which was vacant and the deputies were able to make verbal contact with the person and then the fire department responded and was able to remove the person from the house. >> i can't even imagine how scary that must to be in that home as it was sliding down and then crashing into another home.
6:18 am
do we know how she's doing this morning? >> the deputy told me that when the fire department was able to get her and remove her from the house that she was talking to them. so i'm unclear if she sustained any injuries. >> sergeant, have you heard of any other injuries nearby? >> no. not at this time. >> we heard about 50 homes being evacuated. can you describe what that process is and do we know if everyone in that area is out of their home? >> well, the process was just based on the severity of the mudslide and not knowing if other houses would come down and the safety of all the other residents. the area was evacuated. i'm not sure if everybody was evacuated from the area at this time. you know, it's still ongoing. this happened around 3:00 a.m.
6:19 am
when we received the initial call. then around 3:20 deputies made contact with the woman inside the house. around 4:00, 4:00 a.m., the fire department was able to remove her from the house. >> which streets have been evacuated and do you foresee additional evacuations? >> in sausalito, i'm not sure exactly what streets were evacuated. i saw the -- it's just that we were assisting them with the mudslide investigation. > just to be clear sergeant, when this happened this morning, how did this call come in? was it someone who was a neighbor who heard or saw this happen? >> yeah. it was my understanding that a neighbor called at approximately 3:00 a.m. and then law enforcement of sausalito and the marin county sheriff's office responded and was able to make contact with the woman inside the house that slid down on crescent at
6:20 am
approximately 3:20 a.m. >> got it. we're concerning about the stability of the other homes in the area. what's being done now to check on those? >> i know that -- i've been told that power lines were down and possibly gas leaks. i'm sure that pg&e is either on scene now or en route to determine the severiy of that as well. >> how many deputies are out there currently? >> right now, just one. >> sergeant, we appreciate that. that cleared up how this happened this morning. there's been a little confusion and understandably because this is a stunning story and images that we're seeing. we're glad that it sound like the one person trapped in the home is out and hopefully doing better. we appreciate the information. thank you, sergeant. >> absolutely. my pleasure. thank you. just to know that that person was inside the actual home that slid and to know that that person is alive right now, again, we'll continue to look for updates there on that situation in sausalito.

we're hearing reports of a tree down in the slow lanes. emergency crews on the way to check that out. yep, i'm definitely seeing traffic backing up in the area as well. we have a sig-alert on northbound 880 at davis just before davis. semi lost control, went off the roadway off an embankment. two right lanes are closed. a massive pothole connector southbound to 680. traffic barely moving. at least ten drivers have gotten flat tires. avoid that area if possible. >> alexis, thank you. we want to go to abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield who is live in sausalito this morning for us. where that mudslide happened overnight. >> amy, what's the newest information? >> reporter: what was interesting. we got briefed by the fire chief. what i found interesting is what he didn't know. he said that's because it's hard to make sense of what they're looking at. it's auch such a huge pile of d. it's hard to figure out which one landed on the other. it's just been -- it's such a

mangled mess out here. what we have pieced together and what they believe happened but don't know 100% sure came crashing down on a hill. they believe there was a woman inside the first home. when i double clicked on that to make sure, he said we aren't sure which house he was in. one house came down the hill. hit another home. one of those homes was vacant. that is the good news. but there was a woman inside one of these houses. she was crying out for help. her neighbors heard her. they called 9-1-1. she was trapped. rescue crews were able to get to her and pull her out. they have took her to the hospital but they tell me as a precaution. they do believe that she is okay. they did evacuate the on doors and got people out here. they're worried about what else the hillside can do. we asked if they're sure everyone is out.
6:33 am
they think so. they're not 100% sure. working in the dark has been difficult. >> having the daylight would be beneficial. when the morning sunrise happens, we'll have a better handle on the extent of the damage. >> do you feel confident that everyone is out? >> at this time the incident commander believes that we have. but, again, until we have light, we can't confirm for sure. >> reporter: they have evacuated the neighborhood and told people they're welcome to go to the emergency operation's center where it's dry and safe. they don't want anyone walking or driving through here. they're worried that the hillside could continue to give. it did keep raining on us for hours. so much water in here. they're also worried about the utility situation. there is a gas leak. pg&e has -- they have called crews to get here to try to get that capped. but that's still an issue. and the power is out.
6:34 am
again, they'daylight so they ca a handle on what they're dealing with and what their next steps should be. interesting note. the mayor of sausalito is out here. he's also a realtor. he knows all of the homes in the area very well. he can't figure out which homes these are. he's been looking for any distinguishing featur to remember which home these are that came crashing down. he says you can't see anything that would trigger his memory into which homes these are. they're such a pile of rubble at this point. reggie and jessica, back to you. >> it was obliterated and it's hard to imagine someone was able to survive that. amy hollyfield, we appreciate your reporting. we'll continue to check in with you. >> we want to show you a map where this is happening in sausalito where there's been a mudslide. what this was, was a home situated on sausalito boulevard and then slid down as far as we have confirmed. slid down on to crescent avenue

before? >> we did have slides issues during the last atmospheric storm that we had. it was taken care of by our public works department. again, very tenuous areas up there. >> are we here before the red cross? this is very fresh. they're taking -- what happens to the people inside this building now? where do they go next? how much do they leave behind? are they going to be able to get back to their homes to grab anything they need? >> that's a good question. all those things will be determined. some of the folks live very close to the incident building. other folks were just within the neighborhood that was evacuated. so we really do have to consider all the structural issues before we can let them back in. >> what are they saying? what have they said about their experience this morning? were you banging on doors getting them out or did they

just flee? >> i believe they fleed. i believe they heard a very loud similar it an explosion, a bang, those are the descriptions we're hearing. a tractor driving off the street. neighbs rallied to each other. and evacuated. >> reporter: and this structure slid several hundred feet or several hundred yards? >> i'm not sure. but i would bet it would be close to yards. >> reporter: what about traffic going through sausalito this morning? i know a lot of people will take bridgeway. will that remain open? will the town remain open? i know you're doing evacuations. do we know the ex at the present time yet? >> we really don't. we're trying to keep the main routes open. i would think we're going to try the best we can to keep bridgeway open. the command post is near there. staging areas near there. it really depends. we're going to try to keep it open. >> reporter: it would seem the one area is questionable.
6:49 am
what about the rest of the hillside? >> i'm sure. >> reporter: so you have 25 people inside and a child? >> yes. an infant. >> reporter: we don't know when they'll be able to get back to hair homes? >> we don't. >> reporter: one woman was rescued from a house and we don't know her condition. was she awake, conscious? >> i don't know. >> reporter: you don't know. it's all in flux. >> yes. >> reporter: mike, i thank you very much. the man who knows. we'll come back once again this morning at 3:00 a.m. up on sausalito boulevard. a house appears to be a duplex, slid several hundred feet or several hundred yards. we don't know what -- the residents of that neighborhood over here have been evacuated and at the fire station. they're awaiting word, everyone is awaiting words. the fire department is here, the red cross is here. the police are here. the sun is coming up. finally, we'll get a better sense of what's happening.
