i'm jobina fortson. a woman walked away from all of this with just scratches and bruises. flooding is forcing evacuations. >> and a u.p.s. driver taken hostage. shots fired. what we have learned about the suspect. "abc7 news" starts right now with breaking news. >> now from abc 7, live, breaking news. >> that breaking news is in san jose, where officers are investigating after a deadly standoff. >> our reporter is there live tonight. amanda? >> reporter: this is still a very active scene. friends are identifying the suspect as mark maraski. they say the san jose man was running from the possibility of life in prison. just before 7:00 tonight, the man took off on foot, gun in hand. he was shot and killed. the sheriff's office says one shot took a suspect down at

trimble in san jose. they have identified him as mark moraski, a san jose man in his 30s. >> he was very close to turning the gun over and turning himself in. >> reporter: friends, unable to explain his actions. here's what the sheriff's always told us. at 5:00 p.m., deputies attempted to pull him over and a woman. he took off firing shots, striking a patrol car. he and his passenger were able to get away on foot. they then commandeered a u.p.s.. truck and the driver taken hostage. spike strips were then deployed. >> he was armed with a gun, a shotgun or long gun. he's already shot multiple times at deputies, one of which hit one of the pursuit cars. >> reporter: sky 7 shows the

anxious night for many people living here the russian river. it's flooded in some parts and more rain is coming. our reporter joins us live from guerneville where an evacuation order is in place. lisa? >> reporter: very true. the rain just started up again. and this was a parking lot, believe it or not. the russian river water flooded over, and this is jake's backyard. in fact, he expects that the water will go right into his house. he was told to evacuate, but he says he's not going anywhere. >> i'm getting everything up as high as i can. so it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: jake has dealt with this before but he's not budging. >> it has six feet before it reefs any electricity in the basement. >> reporter: anyone living inside the rv park had no choice but to evacuate. river water forced everyone to pack up and get out.

>> it was like a domino effect. one, two, three, four, five, just pulling right out. >> reporter: the storm forced four school districts and 30 roads in the county to close. >> we rode out, came across the street and realized there's no road here. >> reporter: irvin motta ran through this twice. he was hoping to drive his truck off trenton road before it closed, but the creek rose way too fast. >> it's flooded between here. and flooded behind it, so i can't get in or out. >> reporter: it could be days before he could get through this road. water isn't expected to recede any time soon, and all of those from the evacuated rv park will likely not go home until sunday at the earliest. >> it's not easy for me. >> reporter: power is another problem. it's been going off and on.

main street was completely dark, but it's back on again, and guess what? as far as jake who lives here, he just simply rode it out and brought out the flashlights. >> making due. lisa, thank you. developing news out of marin county. highway 37 will likely be closed in both directions tomorrow from highway 101 to atherton avenue. so time to use a different route. a levy breach is funneling water to a field just south of highway 37. this is exactly where this is happening. water was going over the top of a second levy near the pond. >> another rock slide is impacting traffic. the chp closed the slow lane, and take a look at photos we received. you can see just how large some

of the boulders are. no word on when the slow lane will reopen. a mudslide left a woman trapped, prompting rescues and the evacuation of dozens of people. jobina fortson spoke with the family tonight and is live. jobina? >> reporter: dan, that evacuation order lifted this evening, allowing people to come out here and see the damage for themselves. some doing a double take before realizing that this is a roof. it's amazing the woman trapped underneath all of this debris is physically okay tonight. but her son tells me she is shaken. >> she's fine. >> reporter: we talked to brooks gordon in front of the debris he had to see to believe. >> i've got to be honest, i didn't realize what the magnitude was of what had happened until i watched the video after i had gotten on the phone with my mom, who is in the hospital. >> reporter: his 75-year-old

mother, susan, was sleeping with her cat, peaches, when her home went sliding down into another house and woke up in mud neck deep. this is a photo of susan at the hospital with just cuts and bruises. >> she's a bit frazzled. >> reporter: first responders evacuated dozens of homes near the scene. >> neighbors were trying to get out. >> reporter: as of 5:00 p.m. people were allowed back, but crews red tagged six properties. zach garza lives in one of them. he recorded this video from his balcony as he returned home to grab a few items. he said the mudslide sounded like a freight train. >> right next to our bedroom, almost on top of the house, it felt like something was crashing down. >> reporter: garza is staying at a friend's couch for now. gordon is just simply feeling thankful. work to clear the debris where

this all started will begin tomorrow. we really watched the community step up here for the woman involved, susan gordon. look at this, $20,000 has been raised already just today on her go fund me. for now, jobina fortson, "abc7 news." >> that is incredible. jobina, thank you so much. this isn't the first time they've been hit with a massive mudslide. in 1982, a woman was killed and 600 people were ordered to evacuate for the same reason. the slide ripped a home from its foundation and sent it sliding nearly a block away, directly into another home. so much mud was dumped on 101, emrgency officials shut down the golden gate bridge. >> that rain is not letting up tonight, as we're seeing some downpours around the bay area right now. let's bring in meteorologist sandhya patel with live doppler 7. sandhya? >> we're seeing a drenching across parts of the bay area. let's look at live doppler 7. getting reports on facebook and twitter that it's been coming

down. let's go over to the south bay. north 4th street, you can see street level radar. about three quarters of an inch per hour based on radar. heavy rainfall. santa cruz mountains starting to see that. felton across highway 9, and then as we look at the east bay, fremont area, niles canyon, livermore, moderate to heavy pockets of showers. it is turning to rain and snow. we do have some concerns, a flood advisory remains up for sonoma county and we have the russian river under a flood warning, cresting tomorrow morning. moderate flooding is expected. it's a level two storm. brief downpours, thunder chance, and mixed precipitation for the higher peaks. hour by hour look at your tmeline, including commutes tomorrow coming up. >> thank you, sandhya. in the east bay, a passenger took video when her bus sloshed through a flooded intersection at 7th street at the 880

underpass. water seeped through the doors o and flooded the floor of the bus. a spokesperson said the driver broke the rules by driving through standing water. >> it wasn't just the driver who tried his luck through the standing water. the driver of this bmw got stranded at the same intersection. a big rig came to his rescue to push it out of the water. nearly 14,000 bay area residents are without power tonight. this pg&e map gives us a good idea where those outages are. here's a live look at san francisco international airport, where there was just another round of head ages for travelers tonight. more than 4 hub flights were delayed today. 124 flights canceled all together. blizzard conditions in the sierra have made driving challenging. traffic is being held along 80

new developments tonight in the attack on "empire" actor jussie smollett. chicago police say early reports that the attack was staged are unconfirmed. sources told abc news earlier that detectives are investigating whether the attack was a hoax. the sources say it was planned because the openly gay actor was being written off the show. chicago police say that information is uninformed and inaccurate. today, smollett appeared on "good morning america" doubles down on his claims. >> i respect too much the people who i am now one of those people who have been attacked in any way. you do such a disservice when you lie about things like this. >> smollett said the men yelled

racial and homophobic slurs as they attacked him in chicago. the house has spent to president trump a measure that would fund a border fence and avert another government shutdown. the white house says tonight the president will sign the measure, but president trump has said the measure does not include enough funding. he is preparing to declare a national emergency for a border wall. congressional democrats say they are prepared to take him to court if he does. we need to check on the weather, because that rain seems to keep coming. >> yeah, the hits just keep coming. it's going to happen for a couple more days. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> and the kind of rain we're goingo ing to be different. i'm going to get you into street level radar where we are seeing downpours in the south bay. airport boulevard, jackson street in san jose, seeing heavy rainfall. east foothills as we pan around here, right around parts of the peninsula, saiding into the

santa cruz mountains, it is coming down. pleasanton, foothill road, 680, yeah, it's a little tough to get around. over mt. hamilton, that pink you're seeing is a rain/snow mix. that's the difference. that atmospheric river is now in southern california. we are now seeing a cold storm, which is why we will be looking at snowfall over the highest elevations. speaking of highest, let's talk about the rain totals. these are 48 hour totals. over 12 inches has fallen. marin civic center, that is impressive, with that atmospheric river. 3 1/2 inches in san francisco. three inches open, 2 1/2 concord, a little less than that in livermore. san jose, 1 1/3. now you see why we have had so many storm related problems. any rain that falls on top of saturated ground will cause issues. a flood warning on the russian river at guerneville. temperatures, 30s to 50s.

you can see a few raindrops, slippery out there, turning to snow in the fountains. as a matter of fact, 80 is shut down in some parts. all the other roads are requiring chains right now. so not a good idea to travel up there. winter storm warning until 4:00 a.m. saturday. two to four feet above 3500 feet. up to six feet for those peaks, so travel is not recommended right now. a level two storm for tonight. brief downpours, flooding risk still there, thunder chance, mixed precip. let's look at the hour by hour forecast. between midnight tonight and the wee hours, there will be downpours. by 5:00 a.m., snow showers up to the north. 6:30, activity increases, moderate showers at 8:00 a.m.
