unit. day i moved out there was a mud slide. right there. across the street. from the unit in the exact same place. >> many neighbors are on edge. especially since the forecast continues to show rain. also a friend of susan gordon. the woman in the duplex that slid down the him. she leased a statement saying quote, mentally i feel like the world has caved in on me. i'm overwhelmed by what people are willing to do for me. please make sure that others are helped too. >> at this moment, four structures are red tagged and officials have not confirmed when people in those properties can return home. lt city is coordinating with the national park service on efforts to stabilize the mud slide area. up slope. >>

yesterday storm battered parts of southern california as well. dozens of people in river side and san bernardino had to be rescued by air and boat. fast moving waters overwhelm river ways. one man was stranded on what happened in island in a dry creek bed. >> during the worst of the storm, several out buildings were washed away. along with a long stretch of block wall. and this street in palm springs was swallowed up by the white water river. travel to the sierra is highly discouraged. you can see why. there's a winter storm warning through sunday. i 80 is a mess. and closed from kol fax to the border. highway 50 is open but slow. crawling through myers. doing avalanche control. >> it is a pretty impressive sight in the mountains. look at this video. this is the river near cisco grove. off interstate 80.

but to help the capture the violent felon. are amazing. ups should be proud of that guy. >> the ups driver who is not identified found himself in a series of violent events thursday. which he was taken hostage by two suspects trying to flee law enforcement. >> they wanted him to drive faster and lied and told him the truck couldn't go over 50 miles per hour. because he didn't want t police to lose the truck. >> it started at the vta light rail station. in san jose. sheriffs approached what they thought was a suspicious black suv parked illegally in the lot. with the suspect inside. sources identified them as 33 year-old and 24 year-old rogers of the san jose. the two took off leading officers on a chase. police say rogers fired zerl round striking the deputy vehicle multiple times. the chase continued and the suspects eventually abandoned the suv and carjacked a ups

bart is a part of building a better bay area. all this week we have been examining some important issues related to the transit system. on sunday i team reporter shoed us what bart could have been the original concept to encircle the bay area. on monday we look at impact of the new early morning schedule. on tuesday we spent the day on bart. reporters riding the train showcasing the daily experience. warts and all. >> what drug was it? crack? >> fentanyl. >> any time i have had the police come up and see me they always say, put that away. or say sometimes they don't make you leave the station. >> on wednesday bart board president came to our newscast.

cleanliness or lack of. crime. why are these happening? and they're worsening. >> systemic. it's a bunch of really complex issues. all impacting transit at the same time. so healthcare, home letsness, housing. for example. we all know people need to go far and wide to find an affordable place to live. we have a jobs, housing and balance. we create more jobs more than new housing units. that also creates competition. and the need to go further out. the result is more people are going further out. and taking long r commutes. and that's stressing the system. especially during peek impact times. >> all right. let's explore solutions. what can be done. the bart board president mentioned to us that they will train janitors. before they didn't have a protocol for that. also ambassadors to reach out to

the homeless at the station. good start? >> great start. there's a number of things bart is doing. to get a start on the quality of life issues. fare evasion. we're proto-typing higher gates harder to leap over. and the size of the rail and alarming the gates for homelessness they're working with the san francisco hot team. which are the homeless out reach teams. trained to approach homeless. and get them the services they need. for cleanliness they are certifying a cleaning program and attendants in bathrooms and elevators. >> those are the most pressing short term problems. what about the long term? to ensure a smooth system. it gets you where you need go. timely service. what needs to be done now. >> long term there's big issues. they're important. one is called train control. that regulates the buffer

between trains. so if you update that system, you can have trains closer together. which is increase capacity in the system. another is upgrading the electrical system. a maintenance facility. and the big one is a new second transbay tube to go across the bay. >> as a parent i tell my kids don't complain do something about it. is there something we can each do as an individual? >> great question. ou knee jerk reaction is blame bart. or ask government to fix it. there's stuff we can do as riders. to make a difference. for example, if you see trash on the ground. pick it up. or throw away your own trash. if you see a cleaning crew in the bathroom. thank them for their service. and if you're in a crowded train possibly give up your seat to someone who needs it. the small acts of kindness and accountable go a long way to building a better bay area on
