. >> announcer: live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> oakland unified school district is working on contingency plans for classes after teachers announce a strike date today. hello and thank you for joining us, i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. we begin with the developing news on the oakland teachers strike. >> loose pena is live at headquarters in oakland. >> reporter: thank you. that is right. the strike is set for next thursday. around 1:30 the oakland teachers union announced 3000 teachers

will walk out of the classroom next thursday. this could affect 37,000 students here in oakland. now let's go back to how we got here. this decision is after a fact-finding report where a union representative and a district rep and a chairperson for the state went over both sides of the conflict. let's hear from the sides. >> and i've taught in oakland for 20 years, in that time we have seen years of underfunding. the unregulated growth of the charter school industry and district neglect that has starved our schools of necessary resources. >> we asked them to come to the table and we have a comprehensive proposal and we hope they could come to the table and we believe we could head off the strike. just because there is a date doesn't mean that strike has to happen. >> reporter: tensions are high. on thursday they are preparing to offer classes using school

administrators and substitutes. we heard from the spokesperson they are holding out hope to somehow not fall into the strike on february 21st. bringing you the latest will oakland. >> a look at union demands. teachers want smaller class sizes. more counsel and nurses in schools and a 12% raise over three years. the district said it can only afford a 5% raise over three years. oakland unified said it faces a budget shortfall that could reach $56 million by the 2020 school year. there are still widespread problems throughout the bay area caused by this week's stormy weather. and the north bay bore the brunt of the damage today. look at this mess in whit -- whitaker. a large tree came down on a house. it has been red tagged. utility crews were rewiring the lines down. there is a state of emergency because of all of the damage

during the week's relentless storms. >> in marin county, you have so many hills and so many creeks. there are unfortunately events that bring us beyond what our capacities are and we feed -- wd to look to our partners for mutual aid for the state and federal government. >> another tree on fell on lucas and some have been without power for three days. abc news was in mill valley where a tree came crashing down. you could see there it ended up tangled in power lines on richardson way. pg&e has been notified. and take a look westbound lanes of highway 37 are closed southeast of novato because of f water on the road. the road will remain closed for another week and drivers are being rerouted on to 101. our storm coverage continues with abc 7 news reporter

jewelina foertson. >> it is hard to picture by looking at the mess behind me that 75-year-old susan gordon slid 200 yards under all of this debris but she did and she still can't believe it either. susan gordon doesn't look like what she's been through. many wouldn't have expected her to even survive sausalito thursday morning mudslide but to have just scratches and bruises, incredible. it seems like the whole world has questions for her now. what did it sound like? >> a big roar. ke tumbled and tbl and tossed and smashed into things and tumbled and tumbled until it stopped and i was knee deep up to here in mud. >> reporter: gordon was inside of her duplex that slid 200 yards downhill and crashed into another home. a neighbor heard her screams.

>> he found me and said wave your hand and i was waving my hand. >> reporter: the process to get her out was nothing short of painstaking and until she sat down with us she hadn't seen the wreckage. >> oh, my gosh. oh, my gosh. you've gotta be kidding me. i went through that. >> reporter: she lost everything, including her cat peaches. >> my friend that i share the house with said she was the angel that saved you. >> reporter: gordon has plenty of others coming to her rescue now. the work to heal her and sausalito is well underway. eric and dion, we watched the couny step up t help an her $38,000. and on monday the sausalito city council will hold a special meeting at 9:00 to declare a local emergency to allow them to receive funds for all of the clean-up work that needs to be

done here. live in saucealita, abc 7 news. >> amazing. thank you. right now some areas are getting a brief break from the rain. looking live outside from the emeryville camera and you see some clouds out there but also breaks in the clouds. abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma said we are not finished with weekend showers just yet. >> eric, we're seeing sunshine here and there but still widely scattered showers on live doppler 7. so we'll zoom into the action. and we have showers move through san francisco and south along the peninsula. right now rain through burlingame and we'll track this line of light showers as it sinks to the south and to the east. so foster city, you'll see more rain around 5:13 and palo alto likely around 5:32 and sunnyvale through your neck of the wood the at 5:48 this evening. so on the storm impact scale, we do stay unsettled the next 24 hours. so we're going to see scattered showers on and off even into our sunday. and there is the chance that

when the showers pop up we could see hail as well. we definitely saw that earlier today. this video from napa. look at the hail storm that just popped up in the north bay earlier today and you could see those stones just bouncing off the ground right there. kind of accumulating in spots and that is the threat the next 24 hours. we'll go hour by hour and time out the rest of the storm and show you a dry stretch on the seven-day when i see you in a few minutes. >> it is a wild sight. thanks. well white-out conditions have made driving in the high sierra down right treacherous as caltrans crews did avalanche control work. chains are in effect for enterstate 80 and 50 but caltrans is holding traffic because of spinouts and poor visibility. if you are attempting to drive over the mountains, do expect significant delays. snow seekers who wanted to spend this president's weekend

gunfire took the live of a young man in bay point. contra costa responded last night to a report of a medical emergency on lancaster circle and were told someone was shot. investigators will only say the victim is an 18-year-old man and say it is an ongoing investigation. well the show must go on and it did today for "hamilton" at the orpheum theater in san francisco following a terrifying incident that sent the audience running in panic. we look for the first time inside of the theater. >> please exit the theater. [ sirens ] >> well you hear the alarm there. a medical emergency caused chaos and forced an evacuation during the final act last night. police say somebody called for help which caused panic and then

a professional soccer team became superstars to a group in salinas. the earthquakes delivered more than 3000 worth of goals, balls, cones and lights and other equipment to the ac milan youth soccer club in salinas. all of the equipment was stolen from the coach's truck. the league focused on underserved youth. it is free for players and uses volunteer coaches. a mother who lost everything in a fire is feeling the love thanks to her daughter's little league team. a car crashed into shannon blackwell's victorville home and set it on fire and the little league team found out and began fundraising. one 9-year-old boy was saving up his allowance to buy a transformers action figurer and instead he donated it. >> but i just figured that it is a whole -- a whole house and it

is just one single little action figure. so might as well give it up. >> well said, young man. his $20 gesture brought shannon to tears. the team is raised $4,300 so far. and shifting to the weather right now. it is been busy in the weather department. >> yeah. did it rain last week? >> a little bit. >> rain last week, we had inches of rainfall across the region and showers right now and the next 24 hours will be widely scattered as the storm system begins to depart california. out there right now, some of us seeing sunshine. others seeing showers. so we'll zoom into one shower that is kind of slowly sinking along the peninsula. just moved through san mateo and light rain around san carlos but all snow in the sierra. the the past hour still getting hammered with snowfall. that winter storm warning is still in effect until tomorrow morning so still expecting more

accumulating snow but the snow over the past three days has added up in the sierra. look at the snowfall totals. you see the three-day column. look at those numbers. feet of fresh powder and squaw and sierra at tahoe, seeing 70 plus inches of snow in the past three days. north star and heavenly from 60 to about 64 inches of snow even mt. rose, 30 inches of snow over the past three days. and tomorrow they'll likely add on another foot of snow in many of the resorts. just wild winter weather out there right now. temperature-wise, in the 40s and in the 50s. so it is certainly a cool afternoon out there. 48 in fremont. about 50 in san francisco. 51 in mountain view but down to 49 in santa rosa. we still have a high surf advisory until about 9:00 today. wave heights 14 to 17 feet high. so rip currents are strong right now. so stay away from the ocean water as we have that active current. overnight tonight, a lot of cloud cover overhead.

we'll still be tracking some scattered showers here and there. temperatures pretty much mid-30s to lower 40s as it will drop to over the next 12 hours. so here is the bigger picture and with satellite, inundated with scattered showers up and down the california coastline. there is the snow in the sierra. as we widen out the picture, another weak rip offal energy moving on shore between portland and seattle and that is going to slide down the coastline the next 24 hours. and continue that chance of a shower here or there. so on the storm impact scale, it is a level one light system the next 24 hours and scattered showers. hail possible. we've seen that today so likely we'll see that again tomorrow and snow is possible in our higher peaks like mt. hamilton or mt. tam. tonight it is quiet. a brief break in the activity and then tomorrow morning we'll see another wave of energy move on shore by 4:30 in the morning. there you could see showers and it is really just on and off throughout the day. so tomorrow afternoon, if you do have outdoor plans, i wouldn't

weekend in his home town. last night he decides he's going to go see his alma mater play at davidson. so then what happens? well, he decides i'm going to jump into the student section at davidson and enjoy their victory over st. joe's. he's hanging out with a bunch of kids that are wearing their speedos. i mean, you tell me what superstar in any sport is doing that. stef is just loving every minute of this. >> i didn't get to do that when i was playing or jump in the student section so i -- i wanted to get that experience. the kids with the speedos, a. for effort on trying to distract st. joe's from shooting the free throws. but the energy in the building was unbelievable. it was kind of -- it is surreal every time i go back there just in terms of humble beginnings. i try to enjoy it to the fullest
