lights flip on. should be 5:20, 5:25. >> thanks, alexis. new overpass a driver crashed through a security gate in san jose. police arrested him on suspicion of dui. this is video of the scene at swift and cunningham avenue. the driver's pickup truck that been towed from the airfield. more than a dozen people waking up after a fire at an apartment building. >> here is the story. >> a chemical explosion, dark smoke. i could see flame in the main window of the house. >> reporter: that's when he called 911 and ran across the street to warn his neighbors that their building was on fire. >> i was screaming, pressing all the buttons on the house and getting people out. >> reporter: fortunately nobody was home in the top astronaut unit where it started.

at 3:00 be in the afternoon on a holiday many others were home including clayton bishop who evacuated when he heard sirens. >> when i was running out, there was glass coming down from the top window. >> this building was passed onto me from my dad. he bought this building 1949. >> eunice owns the building that burned. it's been in her family for 70 years. she said her 15 tenants, including her daughter, are all safe and staying with friends, families, or in hotels since the apartments are now unlivable. >> very, very sad but grateful that everybody is out and no one is hurt. >> reporter: like so many san francisco neighbors the homes butt up against each other. cell phone video shows the fire spreading to the house next door which sustained major damage to the roof and ceiling. he and his tenant who live on

the first floor can stay there while they make repairs. the fire department said it could take several weeks to determine the cause of this fire. in san francisco, i'm kate larson, abc 7 news. here at abc 7 news we're focused on building a better bay area. >> that includes looking at housing and education. the possible open teacher strike set for thursday will impact thousands of families. teachers are asking for a raise. right now open school district salaries range from 46,000 to $84,000 per year. experienced teachers earn about $64,000. compare that to housing costs there is not a lot left over. according to zillow the median rent in oakland is $3,000 a month or $38,000 a year. that is more than 80% of a starting teacher's salary. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live for us in oakland this morning. amy. >> hi, jessica. well, the teacher strike is set to start on thursday. we are here at oakland tech high

school. these students have been very supportive of their teachers during these contract negotiations. the district officials want students to know that classes will be in session when the strike starts, there will be school and they want them to come to school. the teachers union said the district has not brought them a proposal that meets their salary demands or shrinks class sizes like they have asked so they are going to strike. the mayor of oakland said she's hoping this will be a one-day strike. she says if it's longer than that, she will assert herself into this conflict. principals are encouraging students to come to class saying you can still support teachers and still go to school. >> we are very concerned but we're also urging parents to bring their chirp to school as we do support teachers in their efforts to receive a raise, we support that. we also want parents to know they need to have their children come to school because schools

john legend in oakland today. it's part of a two-day event for obama foundation mk rising. aimed at closing opportunity gaps facing young men and boys of color. abc 7 news at martin luther king elementary school in oakland. that is where groups took part in a day of service ahead of today's event. former a's all-star pitcher dave stewart was there. he says it's important for young black men to believe they have opportunities to achieve greatness. >> we're looking out for each other and making sure advancement of youth and minorities in the bay area, making sure we pave a way for them. >> there will be a town hall meeting with president obama today. the event is invitation only. the reason they think the actor jussie smollett staged the attack. all eyes on the

7. up in the north bay, sonoma county coast, slight chance of showers there. as we head through the morning right along the coast and north bay you have the best chance. as we head in the afternoon hours, some start to spread our way. it's going to be light. less than .1" of rain if you bump into showers. breezy thursday, colder, dry air rolls en. a chance, just a chance. thanks, mike. taking a look at roads this morning, we did start off with trouble spots. one in fairfield. serious collision major injuries state route 12 at beck avenue. that means that intersection is closed both eastbound and westbound while police conduct an investigation. looks like we're starting to see a little back-up on the westbound side for folks trying to get to interstate 80. so you'll have to use other surface streets to get through that area. a quick check of oakland. we do have a crash reported westbound 580 past high street. i'm not seeing much of a
