are covered and the snow is wet and it's heavy. we set this cup out about an hour ago, you can see it's filling up. two to three inches has fallen across the area and this is what major cities along the i-95 corridor are going to be dealing with. 35 states from kansas to maine slammed with snow, rain and ice. overnight, slick, icy conditions making for some dangerous commutes, forcing cars in new mexico to spin out of control. kansas resembling a frozen tundra. plows unable to keep up. roads and highways littered with vehicles ending up off road. good samaritans and officers stopping and pushing and pulling. these pickup trucks slipping and sliding as they try to get a tractor trailer back on the road. drivers trying to navigate the winter storm conditions. this school bus sliding right off the road.

luckily no kids on board. the driver not hurt. the extreme weather stretching south. in louisiana, this pickup truck struck by lightning. then exploding into a fireball. the driver escaping unharmed. the snow is falling hard here right now but it will eventually turn into an icy mix and then rain later on this afternoon and that heavier rain is what could cause some flooding across the midsouth. george. >> yeah, stephanie, thanks. we'll get to that. steve osunsami is in nashville, tennessee, and, steve, nashville has been getting drenched by rain all month long. >> by the time this is all over nashville could have its wettest february on record. across the south today up to 3 inches of rain could fall in in the south, flash

george. >> messy day ahead. thanks. now to breaking news overseas. a new threat from russian president vladimir putin. in his state of the union address he promised to target the u.s. with new missiles if america deploys medium-range missiles to europe. this comes on the heels of the u.s. withdrawal from the treaty that banned those missiles in europe and putin also denied the claim that russia violated the treaty and warned he would develop weapons that would hit our decision making centers. now to president trump's campaign to derail the investigation of his campaign. the president is denying "the new york times" report that he asked the acting attorney general if he could replace the prosecutor investigating michael cohen's hush money payments to stormy daniels. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning to you. this report is raising even more questions about possible obstruction of justice, just as the specia from president trump an adamant denial. >> no, not at all. i don't know who gave you that. >> reporter: he's refuting a "new york times" report claiming he asked his former acting

attorney general matthew whitaker to interfere in the investigation into hush money paid to stormy daniels and karen mcdougal. >> a lot of fake news out there. no, i didn't. >> reporter: the paper says as federal prosecutors investigated those payments, the president asked whitaker to appoint a more sympathetic u.s. attorney to lead the probe. according to "the times," the president's pick, jeffrey berman, the u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york who had already recused himself because of his close ties to the president's current lawyer rudy giuliani. the department of justice firing back saying whitaker stands by his testimony to congress. >> at no time has the white house asked for, nor have i provided any promises or commitments concerning the special counsel's investigation or any other investigation. >> reporter: but as for that specific investigation in new york, no denial from whitaker. >> did you ever have any conversations with anybody about reassigning or firing any

personnel including u.s. attorneys with the southern district of new york? >> congresswoman, i sit on top of the department of justice as you mention. >> reporter: in the end president trump ended up praising whitaker saying that he's got a lot of respect for him, but democrats on capitol hill are much more critical. the house judiciary committee is asking whether whitaker lied under oath during that testimony and, george, now want him back for more questioning. >> okay, thanks. let's bring in dan abrams. thanks for joining us. let's talk first this reported phone call from the president to the acting attorney general and says, can i replace the prosecutor? how bad? >> so, it's not just the issue that the department of justice is supposed to be autonomous. right. the department of justice is supposed to be this place where they make the decisions for themselves. the reason this is particularly inappropriate is because this relates to the president himself. it's not just about the president calling the department of justice and trying to affect, impact an investigation. it's an investigation that

impacts him himself. now, with that said, you read this report carefully and it does not say that whitaker was ordered, was directed. >> he was asked. >> he was asked about it so the question becomes when you look at the details, did the president just call him and say how does this thing work? can berman be back in there, or is this the sort of thing that can't be changed? >> that might be inappropriate but not illegal. the question when you look at the entire pattern, the firing of james comey, the threats against the investigation, the threats against robert mueller, the attacks from the president, does that add up to obstruction of justice? what does mueller do about it? >> that's the ultimate question. it means this report rings true. this certainly seems like something president donald trump would do and probably does do. does it rise to the level of obstruction of justice? comes down to the question,

how much power does one think that the president has to do whatever he wants? and if you believe that the president has the authority to call the department of justice, change things in the department of justice -- even if it impacts him -- >> even if it's ill-motivated. >> meaning to protect himself, if you think he has that absolutely power, then it's not obstruction of justice. but there's no question this is an effort if you believe it to obstruct justice. the question is, is that illegal obstruction of justice? >> dan abrams, thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, george. now to that new twist in the jussie smollett case. the fbi is now investigating whether the actor played a role in sending that threatening letter to himself a week before the incident. eva pilgrim is in chicago with the latest, good morning, eva. >> reporter: michael, this morning, growing questions for jussie smollett, this as the two men who say he paid them were seen here at this courthouse. this morning, the jussie

smollett case widening with both the fbi and u.s. postal inspection service now investigating this threatening letter and whether the "empire" star played a role in sending it to himself. the explicit letter which made homophobic and racist threats against the actor was sent to "empire" studios january 22nd and he spoke to abc news about it last week. >> on the letter it had a stick figure hanging from a tree with a gun pointing towards it with the words that said smollett, jussie, you will die. there was no address but it said in big red caps, maga. did i make that up too? >> reporter: sources confirming to abc news it's now being analyzed in an fbi crime lab. about a week after receiving the threat, smollett called police after an alleged racist and homophobic attack. >> "empire" isn't going to spend thousands of dollars on artists who would try to take us down. >> reporter: investigating

whether smollett staged that attack with the attack of these two brothers who not been charged. he's maintained his innocence and says he has been further victimized by claims alleged to these perpetrators that jussie plays a role in his own attack. nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is doing. this coming as 2007 court documents show smollett as what accused of giving false statements to the lapd allegedly impersonating his brother charged with false impersonation, driving under the influence and he reportedly pleaded no contest to reduced charges and completed an alcohol treatment program. smollett's team has reached out to well-known defense attorney mark geragos. he's represented high-profile clients like michael jackson and they asked him to represent the actor. no decision this morning. robin. >> eva, is there any indication

yesterday but at times he did sort of lowered his head when investigators described in horrifying detail how they believe he killed kelsey berreth. accused murderer patrick frazee led into a packed courthouse wearing a ballistic vest and handcuffs as gruesome new testimony comes to light about the role that idaho nurse krystal lee kenney allegedly played in the murder of kelsey berreth. the colorado mom last seen on november 22nd with her 1-year-old daughter kaylee on the surveillance video at safeway. according to an agent for the colorado bureau of investigation, kenney told investigators that frazee called her on november 22nd to say she had a mess to clean up and that kenney said she knew frazee had killed berreth. >> patrick kills kelsey in a horrific manner with a bat in the back of the head as kelsey is sniffing candles with a blindfold over her eyes. kaylee was in the back room of

kelsey's condo when kelsey was murdered. >> reporter: the agent testified that kenney said frazee then went to thanksgiving dinner with his family and that kenney claims she cleaned up the crime scene two days later, then watched frazee burn a black tote bag she believed contained kelsey's body. kenney, frazee's mistress, allegedly told investigators she feared for her children's safety after veiled threats from frazee. so she said she complied but claimed she intentionally left behind evidence of the murder for investigators to find. >> we wouldn't even know where the murder happened in the apartment even, which room or where it happened at all, without her testimony. >> reporter: but it was berreth's parents who investigators say first notified them of blood splatter in their daughter's bathroom nearly two weeks after she disappeared. the agent testified frazee said berreth was an abusive mother despite police saying they have no evidence of that, and that frazee asked her to kill kelsey.

once even suggesting that she poison kelsey's favorite starbucks coffee, a caramel macchiato. >> patrick frazee contacted krystal lee in idaho on three separate occasions, had her come to colorado to murder kelsey. >> reporter: kenney allegedly admitting she did end up bringing the coffee to kelsey posing as a new neighbor but said she didn't poison it. now, krystal has also pleaded guilty to destroying kelsey's cell phone and you have to remember that patrick told investigators the last time he saw kelsey berreth was on thanksgiving. but prosecutors are using cell phone location data to prove patrick and kelsey's phones were together days after that. now, guys, patrick hasn't entered a plea and he'll be arraigned in april. >> so chilling. >> it sure is. thank you, kayna. >> very chilling. now we'll turn to that college student who's facing charges accused of creating an

app that looked like a game but it was actually used to sell drugs. abc's gio benitez is here with the story. good morning, gio. hey, michael, good morning. yeah, we always hear about college students creating the next big thing but a freshman at u.c., santa cruz, is now facing some federal charges after prosecutors say he created an iphone app used to run a campus drug ring. collin howard, just 18 years old, is charged with felony drug charges. detectives say they were able to buy marijuana, cocaine and the party drug known as molly using his app called banana plug. you see it there. the app disguises itself as a game based around the university's banana slug mascot and brands itself with the slogan, we have what you want. now, university police say that howard was advertising the app with fliers on campus which led to that undercover investigation. now, according to prosecutors the student listed cocaine, molly and psychedelic mushrooms for sale, but allegedly offered other drugs upon special request. when howard appeared in court on tuesday he pleaded not guilty. if convicted, he could face more

than 60 years in prison. what a wild story, guys. >> it really is. okay, gio, thank you very much. well look who's back. diane macedo is back. >> good morning, good morning to you all. >> and you have a story, wonderful story, update on a little girl. thankfully she's okay after she was hit by a driver. >> that's right, a big update from police and, again, i want to reiterate that this little girl walked away from this. it's hard to believe when you see the video but now police say they have a new video and that one led them to a suspect. >> reporter: this morning, police in california say they found the man responsible for a horrifying hit-and-run. 28-year-old dominic weaver was taken into custody after police say he slammed into a 7-year-old girl, then sped off. the girl incredibly suffering only bumps and bruises. this surveillance video from a neighbor's house in santa rosa shows hazel and her brother running across the street last weekend. that black sedan hits hazel and launches her into the air. the girl lands several feet away

but then amazingly gets up and runs off. all this as her brother damian rushes to get help. >> i felt like i was going to pass out. >> because you were scared? >> reporter: shortly after, police found surveillance video showing the suspect trying to hide the vehicle. on tuesday, authorities arrested the man charging him with felony hit-and-run. back at home, hazel ann has this message for the driver. >> watch where you're going. >> weaver has now admitted to police that he was involved in the crash but luckily hazel ann is okay and hopefully this reminds all drivers to heed her advice, watch where you're going. i love her little stern voice. >> glad she's doing okay. >> hard to believe from that video but that's the good takeaway. >> good takeaway is having you back here with us. >> good to be back, guys. thank you. coming up, we have mandy moore's candid interview about he faces those sexual misconduct allegations.

thankfully no one hurt but this that we're seeing here is going to eventually turn into rain but it's already caused a major mess across the country. robin. >> it is a mess. all right, stephanie, thank you. ginger, so much of the country being hit hard by this dangerous winter weather. >> they are, and you know, we just watched the salt be spread all over here in times square. we're going to need it. it's going to start here after the noon hour. but this morning, it's already started. look at reagan national airport leading in delays and cancellations already, more than a thousand, by the way, across the nation with this storm so, yes, the snow is flying there. minneapolis, minnesota, also snowy roads this morning. their schools are closed again. they should end up with somewhere between 6 inches and 9 inches. that could make them have their snowiest february on record and we're not to the end yet. you see the winter storm warnings that include washington, d.c. up through parts of pennsylvania. flood watches from nashville to

according to "tatler" magazine serena has been scouting the city for the perfect venue. a glowing meghan markle taking the big apple by storm. attention levels are high with the duchess back in the u.s. to attend her baby shower in the city, dressed in head to toe black and cradling her ever-growing baby bump. >> meghan spent four days in new york totally unnoticed, away from the cameras and prying eyes. of course, it wasn't until the word got out that the baby shower was taking place in the city that everyone swarmed and descended on the hotel, paparazzi, video crews, everyone was waiting for a big glimpse, the first american glimpse of meghan's baby bump. >> reporter: the duchess of sussex completing her daytime look with a neutral carolina herrera tote bag and oversized sunglasses and stepping out for lunch with her "suits" co-star abigail spencer. a more glamorous meghan was escorted to dinner by her friend

>> this is where my son tyler was sitting. >> reporter: officials tell "gma" the fire was an accident caused by a space heater. in just the past few weeks these fires in illinois, pennsylvania, d.c., and yonkers, new york, all associated with space heaters. space heater fires accounting for almost 50% of u.s. home heating fires and 86% of associated deaths. >> it's not because the device or the equipment is unsafe. it's because people aren't using them safely. >> reporter: "gma" teaming up with montgomery county fire and rescue service to demonstrate the potential dangers of space heaters and how to stay safe. first, how hot can they really get? we just turned it on and already it's at 100 degrees. >> and you see it spiking to 300 degrees. if you were to touch that, you could burn yourself. >> reporter: our next demonstration, how quickly a fire can spread when a space heater is too close to combustible items.spe heater plo

the couch and the safety feature an automatic shutdown if the space heater overheats has been turned off. >> you can see smoke already. >> reporter: in just a few seconds that space heater started smoking. >> look at it coming up from underneath the couch now. we're going to step away. >> reporter: the flames build. firefighters in protective gear step in to remove some of our cameras as the fire quickly flashes over. in just minutes that space heater caught fire and has engulfed this entire area. firefighters putting out the blaze in just five minutes. >> you could not survive this. >> reporter: to stay safe, keep space heaters at these three feet away from anything that can burn, never use an extension cord, plug the heater directly into the wall outlet, and never leave a space heater unattended. for "good morning america," stephanie ramos, abc news, gaithersburg, maryland. >> important tips from stephanie.

and grocery baskets for some of his most coveted and quirky designs. >> he always incorporated whatever was going on in the world around him so that he produced collections that were distinctively chanel but always felt like they were connected to the contemporary times. >> reporter: news of the designer's death sparked an outpouring of tributes on instagram. fellow designer marc jacobs calling him an inspiration. diane von furstenberg saying he was a perceptive witness of our times. those alongside heartfelt sentiments from models and mousses like cindy crawford, naomi campbell and kim kardashian who labels him a true legend. "vogue's" longtime editor in chief anna wintour saying, karl was brilliant, he was wicked. he was funny, he was generous beyond measure and he was deeply kind. i will miss him so very much. lagerfeld, who famously lost 90 pounds in 13 months, even authoring a book called the karl

lagerfeld diet, sat down with our diane sawyer on "gma" in 2002. >> and did you ever fall off the wagon? >> no, no. i have lots of discipline and i have a very fascist mind with myself, not with other but myself i'm a fascist. >> reporter: and while the fashion icon clearly adored women, he rarely held his sharp tongue, famously calling adele a little too fat and chiding meryl streep for her cheapness after lagerfeld said she turned down one of his designs. >> fashion has to go with time. if fashion doesn't go with time, fashion would be lost. >> reporter: but lagerfeld did have a softer side and was a master of maxims, collected in a 2013 book, "the world according to karl," where he acknowledges he's very much down to earth, just not of this earth. lagerfeld was 85. wow, what a guy. his loss will be felt in hollywood especially with the oscars just days away. who can forget that he has dressed so many celebrities on the red carpet.

julianne moore won her oscar in 2015 wearing a custom chanel dress. her stylist posting this sketch signed by lagerfeld as part of her tribute to the designer yesterday. lagerfeld never missed a detail or an accessory and as you all mentioned earlier, his most beloved accessory, his cat choupette who worked very near him with items on his desk and of course he loved posing with the cat draped around his neck right there. quite a guy, right? >> such a full life. >> such a full life. >> this is really indicative of his work here, what you're wearing. >> safety pins all around this. i thought, what is this all about? this is about lagerfeld. by. >> you got that. looking good. thank you, deb. thank you so, so much. coming up, speaking of fashion, this lucky mom, i don't know if we have her in chanel. orad sre the
