northbound 280, highway 101 to cupertino. 11 minutes. the "empire" actor accused of staging his own hate crime is out on bail and has returned to the set of his show. jussie smollett reported apologized to cast mates and denied accusations that he orchestrated the attack in chicago. on thursday, the santa rosa native faced a judge for the first time on charges he filed a false police report. chicago's police superintendent has some blistering words for the actor. >> smollett attempted to gain attention by sending a false letter that relied on racial, homophobic and political language. when that didn't work, smollett paid $3500 to stage this attack and drag chicago's reputation through the mud in the process. >> picayhe obtaed information from uber on the movements of the two brothers at the center of the case. you see them in the surveillance video. investigators say they were paid

$3500 by smollett to carry out the attack. more coverage on the smollett case, including a timeline of events online at abc7news.com. breaking news out of south america. a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck ecuador near the border with peru. the usgs says the powerful quake hit near the town of monday tal voe. a video taken around the quake. it was felt in parts of colombia as well. it registered two aftershocks of 6.0 as well. we're waiting for more information on possible injuries or damage. >> happening today, the survivors network of those abused by police will release the names of 135 -- priests will release the names of 135 people. the names were compiled by snap. the oakland diocese released the names of 45 priests accused of abuse underage boys and girls.

snap has been sharply critical of the diocese handling of the clergy scandal. challenging the notion that religious confessions should be kept confidential. especially when it comes to suspected cases of child abuse. jerry hill of san mateo introduced legislation of reporting suspected case of abuse regardless of how they learn about it. that includes during confession. under current law, clergy are exempt from reporting what they learn through confession. >> i can't see a justification for that exception. there are ten other states in the united states that do not have that exception. and they have -- they are mandated reporters. >> hill expects opposition from faith leaders. the bill will be up for discussionnext month. robert mueller's investigation into russian meddling in the u.s. election has come to annnnnnn

check out the snow in southern california. isn't that absolutely gorgeous. drivers down interstate 5 through the grapevine, they hit a little bit of snag yesterday afternoon with the snow sticking. to i-5. you can see the white covering it. people actually driving a little slower. the ice and snow at some point actually closed the freeway. now, snowplows finally cleared the roads. cal trans opened everything at 3:00 and chp escorted drivers at a blister 25 miles per hour. thankfully, there was no accidents. right now, it's clear and 28. there could be some black ice on

the grapevine. by the time you get there, the sun will be up and most of it melted. here's a look at the temperatures. mid to upper 50s for most of us. yur even a 52. increasing clouds. we've got 40 in yosemite today. if you're headed to the sierra today and tomorrow, great day. flurries sunday and heavier snow on monday. it will be windy. so monday is a no go. tuesday will be harder with moderate to heavy snow. rain will mix in wednesday. snow flurs flurries on thursday. mike, thank you. in the south bay, one man's effort to build a better bay area is creating quite the buzz. brian godfrey is trying to remop late the honeybee population: time is running out. >> brian godfrey's beehive is ready for the upcoming swarm season. >> i've sat here with my chair

and just watched. it's legreally cool. >> godfrey is feeling the sting of declining bee population. you won't hear buzzing right now. but godfrey tells me 60,000 bees normally make up this colony. 60,000 down to zero during our visit. there are reasons why. experts say there is a real cause for concern. >> not just the insects. not just the pathogens. it's not just the habitat. it's everything that's causing the synergistic effect causing this decline in bees. >> from san jose state, they say the impact could be catastrophic. honeybees function as a driving force behind all agriculture. >> those numbers decline, we'll have serious problems with having all of our fruits and vegetables. >> it's the main reason godfrey is attempting to build a better bay area. raise enough money to get at least ten hives in backyards

cass tan yoe road exit. roadwork is scheduled to end at 6:00 a.m. if your commute takes you that way, you probably know about this. heads up, that's going on until 6:00 a.m. not impacting traffic right now. the drive times in the green, 101, 580, 101 on the board, all green. google says it will no longer require employees to settle claims in private. this is months where google employees including at mountain view headquarters staged a global walkout. one demand was for them to end the force arbitration policy. the change will go into effect for current and future employees as of march 21st. google says it will not reopen claims. they can litigate past claims

i know they'll start lining up by 4:00 when it's 54 degrees. dress accordingly. mike, thank you. golden state warriors forward draymond green will be at the downtown oakland ymca today. he will be see awe any refurbished basketball court that will be named in his honor. the draymond green court is newly named and newly redone. the warriors pg&e and the good tiedings foundation helped with the effort. the new court features new hardwood flooring, backboards and hoops. it also sports a new color scheme, complete with the city of oakland skyline and the city's tree logo. pretty cool. the wait is almost over. california pacific medical center will move into the new -- they will transfer 250 patients by ambulance. abc 7 news was at the old hospital on california street for a practice move.

they've spent years preparing for this moment. about 200 medical personnel will transfer patients to the new van ness campus that includes nurses, emts and therapists. >> every single detail we have thought of from how we handle patients' individual needs to do they need a wheelchair, an interpreter. do they need someone next to them. >> the police will help with traffic along california street. looks like we could have a soaking storm come at us monday. especially in the north bay. we wake up in the morning, there's light rain in the north bay at 4:00. notice how it slides south into the heart of bay during the evening. even touching the south bay a little bit. overnight, into tuesday morning, it's going to bow back up to the north keeping the north bay in constant rain for 24 to 48 hours. then it stays there. it gets moderate at times as you look at 9:00 tuesday evening with that yellow.

by wednesday a slides down to the south and leaves us finally cleari how much rain will it leave? the potential is quite a difference between where you are. already by tuesday, nearly 2 inches in the north bay to a tenth of an inch in the south bay. by the time we get to wednesday, near a half inch in the south bay. near an inch in san francisco and oakland. this is pretty impressive. this comes to fruition, we're going to have flooding problems in the north bay tuesday and wednesday. let's look at the traffic now. camera from san mateo bridge. there are no crashes there and traffic is starting to fill in a bit. the drive times, we're still all in the green. i should mention as far as mass transit goes this morning, there are some service changes on ac transit if that's the way you go to and from home and work. make sure you look that up. that's because of the oakland teachers strike. everything else is going just fine this morning. you're most likely to live longer inawai california.
