it is tough to get that equipment to the hillside to dig. >> it is hard to get to that dirt, and no word on what could trigger this landslide and as you can see they are trying to get more of the earth falling back down, and it is a tough situation for them right now, and i saw somebody who was out there in the water helping out anybody, who was trying to help this woman who may be inside, and presumably a woman, and obviously, the time is the factor here, because if you are buried with limited or no oxygen at this time, you can see how hard these guys are working, and you can also see fatigue is setting in, and some digging with their hands right there, and trying to pull out the brush. they don't really know where to be searching to be honest from what our information s and spencer, you have something to add? >> yes, i was checking the
4:01 pm
latest winds, and in the last hour, the winds in that area have been light like 8 to 12 miles per hour, and that is not a big factor, and the ground around the bay area is fairly well saturate and even though we have not had rain in the last couple of days and the rain on the previous two days and the weekend and so sometimes that can be a contributing factor and not going out on the limb for that reason, but we have saturated soil around the area. >> and this off of the top of your head, but given the rainfall in last week or so, how much of this area southwest san francisco by lake merced and how much water would have come down and been contained in that area. >> and larry, that is a good question, because this area would be one of the more heavily impacted areas, and close to the coastline and around the golden gate, there and that is an area that is tending to be the higher rainfall totals, and earlier in the storm, we had a area that
4:02 pm
was significant and this is one of the areas that got high rain totals so it is a fairlyai w do that is what caused it, but as we are out and about on our daily lives on a couple of sunny days, you have to be aware of that as well, because you don't know what is changing and shifting and now the rescuers are trying to find somebody who is presumably underneath all of that dirt at ft. funston. >> and because of the geography, this is a windy area, and you don't know if that contributed at all with the saturation that spencer was talking about, but we must have 20 or 30 rescue members, and there is what looks like somebody is coming out of the water on the green wet suit there out of the water, a random citizen coming up to try to help. >> and we are talking to a photographer who was up higher where they have people arriving to try to get some shovels down to the crews, and he said that
4:03 pm
apparently two women were walking a dog along the shoreline, and then landslide came down, and one woman was partially covered. they could still see her partway and able to get her out, and apparently nonlife threatening injuries for that woman. the dog was also found, bun person unaccounted for, and that is what we are hearing at this point. this is a partial slide near the cliff there. so, might be an adult female they are looking for in the ft. funston area here as they continue to dig. >> they have formed a line and making quite a bit of progress to getting the sand behind them towards the shoreline, and the problem is that we don't know how much of the slide they really have to clear to get to whoever is under there. >> okay. >> there, they have been wondering if the tides are a factor, but the high tide occurred around three hours ago at 1:20, so the tide is receding and approaching low tide which
4:04 pm
is good news, but still, as we said earlier, the soil is pretty well saturated. well below the surface and around the bay area, and this is one of the heavily impacted areas for the recent rain. >> we have tallmidge? >> i am here. >> what can you tell us about the situation. >> i don't know if you are taking a look at it, but we have about 50 firefighters out there trying to locate the missing individual. they are digging out with shovels at the moment. we do have a search and rescue animal, and couple of animals on the way to try to help us to pinpoint more specific area. >> what time did you get the call? when you believe that this slide happened? >> this call came at, oh, gosh,
4:05 pm
it has been about, let me just double-check that for you, and you can go ahead to ask other questions while i get that. >> as best we know, one person is what you are looking for? >> yes. there were two people walking along the beach, and one of them was able to get out of the landslide, and okay, so the call came in at 2:52. and so, she stated that there was another individual with her. >> what we are looking at is a feverish effort, and i am guessing it is a 50, 60 feet that you have firefighters stretched out here in a line, and there is really no idea, and now they are walking back, and so i am wondering if they have new information. we are look agent a live picture of sky 7 by the way. >> yes. >> and they seem to be getting a message from some other rescue
4:06 pm
personnel. >> and coming away from the digging at this point, and they have essentially stopped. >> and you know, it is not a very stable situation for our crews to be in at the moment either. and then of course they have to keep their eye on the tide as that should be coming in soon. it is low tide now. >> and i know it is early, so no word on what triggered this, and they may have pulled back so that the search dog can now go to work, because we can see the dog running around there. >> and yes, the search, and so, that should be interesting that hopefully the dog is going to be able to give us a more specific area to concentrate on. >> well, this is so difficult, because obviously your crews don't have a specific spot to go search. all they know is that there is a huge mound of sand that has come from above, and there could be a person anywhere in that line.
4:07 pm
we can see the dog now going off towards the water, and so, it is hard to know exactly where they are going to resume digging. >> well, we will see what the dog has to say, because these animals are pretty good. >> oh, the dog has stopped. >> i mean, i think that they have, you know, that the general area where they were, and i mean, there's, you can see that there is sand sliding down going on the other side of the jetty there. so, it was good that we had, recovered that first woman and able to get her out, too. >> she is fine? i mean for the most part in terms of physically speaking, she is going to be okay? >> yes, i mean, they walked her up to where the paramedics were.
4:08 pm
so, yeah. >> what more can your crews do besides dig with shovel, because like you said, it is an unstable situation, and you can't have all of the firefighters getting injured either. >> right, right. and not a whole lot. i mean, there are not going to be a doze r out there at any point. >> any history with this location in terms of the slides that we should know about? >> is am sorry, any other location of slides out there that we can see zooming out that we can see more of the cliff and the shoreline and is this a precarious area towith? >> you know, i'm not sure what the slide history is here, and probably the national park service would be able to tell you, but one thing i should note about this animal is that it is
4:09 pm
searching for live, you know, people who are still alive. >> not a cadaver dog. >> it is not a cadaver dog. >> correct. >> and so as we pulled out there and it is hard to tell, because we didn't know what this area looked like before the slide, but it almost appears that there is new sand in a triangular formation. >> yes. >> and that is where they were concentrating the digging, but now the dog is going up and down the cliff trying to detect a scent, i suppose. >> right. one of our, and i believe this is one of our search animals, and we have another one coming from another agency, too, south city. so, and i'm not sure if that is the cadaver dog or not. this is live search, yes. >> what is the procedure at this point? hope that the dog finds a scent
4:10 pm
and then dig in that area? >> yes, hopefully the dog is going to make a notification that they have hit a scent. but there is a lot of, and it is not looking great at the moment. but we'll see. >> and you said that the call came in around 2:52, so it has been more than an hour that the person has been buried. >> yes, right. >> and so the other woman who was rescued, what was her situation? were they believed to be nearby in terms of where they might have ended up after the slide? >> i don't know. i don't know. but i imagine that she probably gave them some direction as to where to begin. >> right. >> it is up to kind of the dog to try to let the fire crews know where the dog believes somebody might be buried underneath the slide. >> right, right.
4:11 pm
>> so for anyone just tuning in, talmadge who responded to enant a call in the ft. funston area about 2:52 when a slide came down, and one woman was partially covered. she was rescued and walked back out, and she is going to be okay physically, and the other dog is found as well. they are still searching for the other woman, and the crews have been digging and digging, and the dog who is trained to find people who are alive is searching to find a scent in this area. >> wendy, how often do you have slides such as this one where people are bury or impacted? >> well, i mean, we have had some slides as you are aware of in the baby, hillsides, but i
4:12 pm
can't recall the last time that we had a slide along the beach like this. >> okay. and we are pulling out now so that you can take another look, and i believe we have sky map 7 features that we can show for you as well the distance of the top of the cliff and looking at about 159 feet from top-to-bottom and this is a general area so that you can see where this is happening, and ft. funston, and the skyline boulevard is off to the right, and you can see all of the earth on the side, and this is where the slide happened. >> and mindy, this is a poplar do anj tshorele.t >> yes, it is a beautiful area, and we do respond out here for people who get trapped in the surf. and you know, to conduct some cliff res kus and animal rescues out here, and pretty frequently.
4:13 pm
>> and we saw someone actually in a wet suit, and we assume that is a random person who was out there in helping and not necessarily with the fire department? >> well, it could be an off-duty member. i don't know who that is, but it could be an off duty member. surfing. >> and it is a little bit troubling that the dog has not identified a specific spot, and right now, the crew at the bottom of the hill has stopped digging and sort of waiting for, and okay, dig here, or go here, and some sort of instruction, because they were feverishly digging for quite a while really trying to clear any brush or rocks and guessing and hoping they would find the other woman who was believed to be buried underneath there. but you could see as they were digging, more earth would start sliding down. so it is a touchy situation. >> exactly, yeah. >> but there are cadaver dogs on
4:14 pm
the way or -- >> i am not sure if that is a cadaver dog coming from south city. ours is a live search animal. so i am not seeing much progress being made here unfortunately. >> we are going to show some ground video. i am presuming that this is the other person who was rescued. this is at the top of the hill. >> just to be clear, were they together, and like walking together? >> yes, yes. >> oh, goodness. you can see them coming with more shovels, and this is video that we had taken and there's the woman in a blanket, and keeping her warm and making sure she is okay, but apparently, nonlife threatening injuries for that woman, and very fortunate for her. >> and we are definitely going make sure that we have some safety officers out there, too, to keep an eye on the welfare of the crews. >> yes, also for anybody else
4:15 pm
who might be thinking of going for a stroll in that area, obviously, this is dangerous situation given the slide that we have just seen, so probably keeping people away. >> right. >> and have there been a lot of people in the area, do you know or just kind of stragglers today? >> well, i really don't know. i really don't know. >> it is a nice day and people want to get outside. >> it is a beautiful day, and we have had some rain. mindy, thank you for your time. we will stay on this and keep the chopper up so we can keep an eye on the rescue, but we do appreciate your time. >> all right. okay. take care. >> mindy talmage hoping that her crews can get a clue as to where to dig next. we will stay on this and continue with

sleep number. proven, quality sleep. we get back to our breaking news now, and this is happening at ft. funston in san francisco, and this is a live picture from sky 7. you can see the earth there, and there were some people walking and sort of to the right of your screen, bottom right corner is where the firefighters were digging, because there were two women walking with a dog and there was a landslide. this happened around 2:52 this afternoon, and you can see more crews coming to help. you can see the photographer there, and more fire crews that are still trying to find one woman. one woman was recover and taken away by an ambulance and nonlife threatening injuries and a dog recovered, but still one person they are looking for and a search and rescue dog trained to find people who are still alive,
4:19 pm
and as far as we know it was still looking and had not located anyone yet. we are keeping a tab on this, and we will bring you details onair and online. and we have other news to cover this afternoon. >> and yes, day two of the oakland teachers strike, and we have team coverage with abc 7 news anchor coming with us, as is leeann melendez coming live from the union head quarters. leann? >> well, it is after 4:00 on a friday and we don't have an agreement, and both sides spent the day negotiating in an undisclosed location, and i should know more at 5:00, and definitely 5:30 when the union usually has their press conference, but it seems like it will be a long weekend. >> get up, get down, oakland is a union town.
4:20 pm
>> reporter: it is the same drill as yesterday, but today, teach aers and the students seemed more defiant. >> we are the teachers, too. >> reporter: an oakland teacher said they will continue to demand a higher compensation package than the 8.5% offered by the oakland unified school district. >> we don't need a counter proposal, and we know what we want, and we have to fight for what we want. >> reporter: today, the union addressed the issue of possible school closures in oakland which is tied to the bargaining negotiations. >> that conversation will happen between oea and the school district. >> reporter: but the school district said it has not and will never be part of these negotiations, and it is for the school board to decide. >> there are too many student, and if you compare us to other districts with the same schools, we have far too many schools. >> reporter: it is a long day of rallies and marches. >> my body is tired, and seeing everybody out here and the
4:21 pm
community and other educators and my school counselors and the nurses is really uplifting and motivating. >> reporter: cynthia came to the rally with her three children, and with the of them dtwo of th school today. >> it is the right resolution and time is of the essence. >> and i am here for my teachers and students. >> reporter: and this is from a go profit which is calling on them to fix their equity issues. now, why this nonprofit? well, some people are claiming they tend to favor charter schools, but go public school has adamantly denied that. and now, unfortunately, this morning we received this press release from this nonprofit. it said a group of people carrying cameras banged on the door of a leader of local nonprofit go public

schools, awakening his family and frightening his children. now, i asked the union if they had a reaction to this, and they, the union said, we have told people to be respectful, but people have to also understand that emotions are running very high at the moment. i'm live in oakland, leeann melendez, abc 7 news. >> thank you. and now, rec centers and libraries are not the only places that oakland parents are sending their children. >> and some parents are taking kids into their own homes, and we talked to a couple of those moms with eric there at the leadership academy in oakland. eric? >> yes, some of the schools are taking in a few students whose parents don't have any options of where to drop them off. we understand here at the leadership academy 10 or fewer kids came to school, but there are moms here who did some double duty here taking care of
4:23 pm
their own kids and some from their fellow parents. >> can you bring this here. >> it is lunchtime at jen howser's home which is converted into what she is desperately hoping is a temporary day care. >> if you can hear me clap your hands. >> reporter: in addition to her own two kids, she is watching ten others whose parents have to work, and all of them are students at the oakland unified school district melrose leadership academy. and jen says she is willing and able to help where she can. >> we are lucky to have a big backyard and flexible work schedule, and so we knew that there was no other alternative. >> the kids are in 1st through 3rd grade and most would rather be in school, and all of them support the striking teachers. >> because the teachers work very hard and we want them to get paid enough. because the school says they don't have the money, but they do. >> and sometimes we don't have
4:24 pm
the nicest teachers, but at least we get to learn things. >> reporter: in this home, video stations were one of the stations that one of the six kids she was watching could take advantage of, and math and reading and they took a hike today. here, the kids admitted that school is important, but they did not mind having a friday off. >> i want the teachers to get better pay, but also, some part of my brain says it is fun not to go to school. >> and i actually enjoy spending time with the kids. but i appreciate the teachers and all of the energy that it takes to do that. >> reporter: and the moms of the kids that we talked to said that after experiencing today, the teachers really don't make enough money. now, tara says she is in it for the long haul, and jen is going out of town next week, and her husband is going to be taking care of all of those kids. guys, back to you. >> all right. eric thomas is reporting live on the teachers strike. we are following the breaking news out of san
4:25 pm
francisco, and this is the landslide at ft. funston, and one person rescued and another person believed to be underneath all of that sand. >> it is a different dog. >> it is a different dog, and the shoveling has resumed, and so it is kind of the needle in a haystack here to find a woman believed to be underneath all of the rubble here since 2:52 this afternoon. we will stay on the details, and
4:27 pm
and we are following the breaking news out of san francisco. we are staying on top of this landslide at ft. funston and checking on any new breaking details, but they are looking for a woman who is believed to be underneath that rubble that you can see there in the middle of the screen. >> yeah, if you have joined us late, at 2:52 there was a landslide, sandslide at ft.
4:28 pm
funston, and two women were walking, apparently with a dog, and one woman was pulled out by rescue crews, and we saw a shot of her presumably going to the hospital, and she was shaken up, but she looked to be otherwise okay, and the search continues for the other woman, and the problem is that they don't know where to dig. that is why you can see a line of firefighters there. and this is all manual work, because it is difficult if not impossible to get any sort of equipment down there other than shovels, and so it is a frantic race against time, and looking for a needle in a haystack, and we believe in a triangular orange portion of the rock and sand that you can see on the right side of the screen is where the slide occurred. so they could have to go well up the mountainside in order to clear that slide away, and right now, it is -- >> it is unstable, too. >> yes, and what is dangerous for them is that what is part of
4:29 pm
this is that we have had one landslide already, and 50 or 60 firefighters on the scene, and they don't want to be in jeopardy at the bottom of the next slide if one occurs. >> yeah, a couple of dogs out there searching as well hoping t give them any clue as to where specifically to dig, but no sign of that woman yet, so we are keeping on top of this, and we continue to monitor this breaking news. >> all right. in the meantime, we'll move on and look at the forecast as spencer joins us. we were talking about the rain that may have contributed to this earlier in the week. >> yes, so much rain earlier in week, and no doubt that the soil is saturated there, and especially in that area with the golden gate and the north gate tend to get the heaviest totals from storms like the recent ones. here is a live look at the doppler7, and we have in terms of the atmosphere dry conditions and sunny skies and a fairly pleasant day here on the live doppler 7, and you know, if you go back to see if this thing is bearing with me here, but maybe

the graphic system is not set up to play forward, and it should be, and here we go. there you go. this is a live view from tower. and mid-50s, and you can see san francisco, oakland and mountain view. and you can see out near the san rafael, it is mid to upper 50s. and the view from mt. tam looking down at the bay, the blue skies and these are the mainly dry weekend coming our way but with increasing clouds. the rain arrives early monday and a wet pattern for next week and overnight tonight much like the previous two weeks and low temperatures would be dropping down to freezing in the north bay, and others in the inland bay, and around the shoreline, and tomorrow's highs are pretty much the same range that we saw
4:31 pm
today and mid-50s in the coast, and upper 50s and almost 60s in some of the inland areas. and the chinese parade is taking place tomorrow in chinatown, and the parade is going to be about 5:15 and people will gather around 4:00 or earlier, and partly to mostly sunny skies i should say early in the afternoon, and then later into the evening hours, a little increase of the clouds with the temperatures in low to mid-50s, and dry, but not dry for long. the rain chances in seven days ahead will increase to seven days ahead, and 80% on tuesday and wednesday, and the strong impact scale is to be a moderate one, and produce some substantial rainfall. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast after increasing forecast on oscar sunday, we expect some dry conditions, but four consecutive days of rainfall, and the heaviest will be late monday through tuesday and into early wednesday. early to midweek, be prepared
4:32 pm
for more wet weather and again saturated ground which could pose some problems. >> yes, especially for any of the other wind gusts and a couple of windy days. >> and the storm on tuesday is >> and the storm on tuesday is likely to be you know when you're at ross and... wow! ...you realize you can totally eat out more? that's yes for less. get the latest spring trends for your home at 20 to 60 percent off specialty store prices. at ross. yes for less.

news coverage here. the fire crews are feverishly digging into the hillside and landslide that occurred just before 3:00 this afternoon and two women and a dog were walking in this area of ft. funston and not far from lake merced to give you the orientation, and the man at the right side of the screen, and walking up there at the top, and you can see how high this is. about 200, and at various spots it varies, but up to 200 feet to the bottom. the women were at the bottom, and the rock slide or the landslide occurred and one woman trapped and then rescue and they could see a part of the body, and she was pulled out and we saw her presumably off to the hospital at this point, but we don't know where that other woman or the dog is. and you will see the dog, but that is a rescue dog. >> the photographer that we spoke to said that the dog was found. so i think it is the woman that they are looking for right now, and presumed bury and yes, two dogs and the one right here, you
4:36 pm
will see in the middle of the screen, that one is a trained to find people who are still alive and going up and down the hill, and the slide, and trying to find any sign of that woman. >> let's bring in dan noyes who takes your own dogs? >> i have experience at that place for about 20 years of taking the dogs and the kids there, and it is a great place to take the animals and your dog there, and the path along the cliffs and you can go up along the cliffs and work your way down to the beach. i have walked on that same beach with my dogs and the kids along the years, and i have to say that you can sometimes see some slides, and you know, some smaller slides of course, and so at least in my mind, i am cautious about being closer to the cliffs coming off like that, and it is a wonderful place to take dogs and people out there, and it is a shame to see what is happening today. >> and who knows how familiar those women were with the area, and like you said, you have seen things coming down, and if you
4:37 pm
not familiar with this beach as not know to be worried about it. >> i know that you have talked to spencer about this, and the surfer in the area, and it is good news that the tide is going down, and the low tide at 7:00 today, and so you don't have the water coming up and affecting where the searchers are, and the high tide is past midnight, and they have a very good window of opportunity. it looked to me like it is not the light sand that you will typically see out there. when you are walking along the paths, the sand is very light, but the sand where the incident is and it is where they are digging is conpact ee ee eed thd fingers crossed for the best. >> and we are still fortunate to believe that it is only one person there, and obviously a beautiful stretch of san francisco because of the views, and any number of people, and we are told that they are looking for one woman in particular.
4:38 pm
>> and the other thing they want to bring up is that we constantly, and i mean most every month we will see one or two rescues out there at ft. funston, and maybe a dog going off of the side of the cliff, and so you will have search and rescue out there, and these fire crews know very well this spot and this location, but i don't recall seeing a slide of this magnitude in the last 20 years at least in my experience. >> i wanted to show you a picture, and that circle there in the middle of the top of the screen, and that is an old world war ii gun turret, and coming back live, that has dropped down, because of the emotion, nd now you see where it has landed, and we are zooming in here, but the top left of the screen there, and so we are illustrating that because erosion is such a difficult situation in that area, and it is so prevalent, and so you have that big concrete mass which many, many years ago was at the top of the cliff, and hait has
4:39 pm
fallpho phonen to the bottom, a erosion is something that people have contended with for many years. >> and >> yes, alma. we are one mile away from where the partial landslide took place. i wanted to show you to my left that there are several officials staging in area, and not able to go higher. we were told in order to go up, we have to hike up, and it is not actually viable for us to go higher. we know that two people are walking on the beach with the dog, and they like to place it out of nowhere, and one is able to get out, and we have video of some of the victims and it is a woman 20, 30 years old and inside of the fire truck and evaluated by the medics for nonlife threatening injuries. we believe that there is still one person trapped under a huge
4:40 pm
pile of sand, and we know it is not a stable situation for crews, and they are searching with shovels and hands and people coming out of the ocean to help. there are search and rescue animals coming on the way, and they don't know where to search, and time is of the essence at the moment. they are still here trying to figure out where to look from the victim that is still stuck. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you on the scene there. and it has to be frustrated for the firefighters, because they are working so hard, and this is going on for probably close to an hour and maybe longer than an hour, and there is only so long that you have to dig before you are physically exhausted. and coupled with the fact that you don't know where to dig. and so, just a very frustrating afternoon, and unfortunately one woman was rescued and somewhere
4:41 pm
underneath that pile of rock, and you can see how easily it comes down when they put the shovels to it, and so, they are literally putting their own lives in danger, because we don't know about the stability at the top. >> and larry, do we know the women were walking up above the beach or along the cliff? do we know that? >> i think that they were on the beach. but. >> we believe, but we are not sure. judging from, you know, your knowledge of the area, does it look like that one triangular area that, and would that be the slide? >> yes. >> that is all of the new sand that came from the top, and so think ouanou would have to dig through, and i mean, it is -- >> it is a massive slide. >> huge. >> and the sad thing to say is that the firefighters are really digging blind. they don't know where they are going, and they don't know how deep in that, and the slide is so deep. >> and they are obviously moving on it, and they are pulling off
4:42 pm
of that one area again, and now they are moving over. oh. >> we will keep whareliable wifi with coverage, throughout your home? how about having internet that can help you save on wireless phone service? xfinity gives you the fastest speeds for all your devices. plus, now that xfinity mobile is included, you can switch your wireless carrier and save hundreds of dollars a year. talk and text as much as you want and only pay for data.
4:44 pm
4:45 pm
the two women, and one of them was recover and taken presumably no the hospital, and now firefighters are digging and digging and trying to find the other woman. there are a couple of dogs out there, and you can see the one on the left-hand side, and they are trying to find that person. >> let's bring in denise sanders who is with the search dog foundation, and denise, i don't know if you can see the pictures that we are looking at, but we have seen one dog running around up and down the ill hside, hills obviously looking for scent, but how does the dog go about trying to find somebody who if it is a random person if they don't have any clothing beforehand? is denise there? >> and in a tracking capacity, they are searching for the any scent of a live human being and it does not matter who it is. they know they can see the crews there on the ground digging, and so they are not searching for those folks, but what they are hoping is that if they can catch the scent of someone they can't
4:46 pm
