live. >> and this is a popular ear yar no dog walkers and hand gliders and other activities. this cliffside here is going right down to the base of the ocean here where the waves are coming in. our crews confronted with a group of individuals who were frantically and aggressively digging out what they said was a person trapped under an estimated four to five cubic tons of dirt that was result of the landslide from the cliff. bystanders were telling us that they observed two female adults with a canine walking along the cliffside. they were articulating they had their hand up against the wall, and the cliff gave way over those two individuals. we have a bi-stander who is being treated with nonlife threatening injuries at the time, and also a canine who
5:01 pm
been found. we have one female adult trapped underneath the dirt who we are aggressively working to get out from underneath the dirt. we have 65 firefighters using their hands and carefully using shovels to sift through all of the dirt in an attempt to locate the individual, and we have two live body search canine team, and one is from san francisco fire and one is from south san francisco fire that are currently on the scene working, and the benefits to that is that the canine teams are able to give us a location based off of their indicators for us to actually search. we are also aggressively looking at the option that this individual may have been pushed into the ocean. at 2:38 the tide was out and we had a large gap between where this is occurring and where the shoreline was at. we are confident at this point that she did not go into the water, however, we did look at
5:02 pm
that and we did have rescue resources searching that area as well. we are currently still treating this as a rescue operation. however, we are projecting forward and we do have cadaver dogs en route from hollister, and should be here wherein the hour. we are hoping not the use that, but in the future this could be a prolonged operation, and we want to have the resources available if needed. >> do we -- >> yes, currently members from the san francisco fire department and san francisco's canine rescue team, and san francisco police department and san francisco marine unit and the golden gate national service and park rangers and u.s. park ranger police department on hand as well as the emergency management for the city of san francisco to address this. >> and sir, you said that time is of the essence, but how much time do you have to rescue this
5:03 pm
time is so crucial that we need to find the person and find that person right now. so again, down, there i am seeing the firefighters on their hands and knees digging through the dirt to where the canines are indicating and the bystanders are stating they believe they saw the person going into the dirt. we are using shovels to sift through the dirt in an effort to locate the individual. we did mark out that this occurred at 2:38, and we are being optimistic about our efforts and not giving up hope at this time, but we are thinking that methodically, and that is why we have the other options moving forward in case we have to utilize them. >> giving a sense of how large this search area is. >> the best way is if you are looking behind you, and truck 15, that is the same amount of dirt down on the actual sand level or the base of the beach that we are sifting through, so
5:04 pm
it is the equivalent of a large big rig truck and trailer dirt below, and that is my visual estimate, and it is not a factual estimate. >> do we know anything about the victim? maybe how old they are or anything that can give us some sort of information of their condition at this moment? >>, so, again, all of the information with the exception of the canine rescue and the adult female rescued are based on the bystander witness accounts and looking at the adult female, and seen accompanying the other individual who is transported to the other hospital. >> and also, do you know if this person has a cell phone and if we tried that. >> that is great question, and we are pinging the cell phones and looking for that, and met al detectors en route to facilitate with the efforts. we don't know where it is, but we are looking at all of the potential efforts and options available to us to assist us in locating this individual. >> and prior to this incident, any sense that this portion of
5:05 pm
the beach was precarious? >> that is for me to remark on that would be speculative at this time, and that is something that the agencies involved will be looking at. in this area, we do a lot of public education to stay on the trail, and don't go off of the trail, and stay off of the cliffs and know the limits and the barriers and i am not saying that is the incident in this case, but those are issues that we have seen before. >> and lieutenant johnathan baxter, thank you so much. and so, can you speak about the two ladies on the cliff, too close to the cliff or any information on that? >> well, for me to comment on that is speculative, because we are going off of the accounts of witnesses who again observed two female adults with a canine walking along the cliffside with their hands up along the cliff, and the cliff did slide. >> and how far away they were from each other from this one person who did get out? >> i do not have that information and the dynamics of
5:06 pm
you and i and the velocity of all of that dirt going down, you can be spread far apart which is why we have a wide search pattern going on, and 60-plus firefighters working diligently and effortlessly to work on this, and the search canine teams doing the same. >> and this person is -- >> yes. >> and do we know how much time they might have? >> again, we are being optimistic at this time, and considering it to be a rescue operation, however the chances are at this time that, you know, if we do locate her, there is going to be a lot of efforts that are going to be required to revive this person, and it is not a live body find, but a find that we are going to have to aggressively work with our paramedics to revive or become a body recovery, and we are not to the point where it is a body recovery at this time, but we are attempting to make it a rescue operation. >> lieutenant, sorry answered this, but how far down? >> the cliffside is probably 75 to 80 feet tall from the actual
5:07 pm
base of the dirt that we are looking at and roughly around that parameters, and they were apparently about halfway up from that point, and again, that is all based off of witness accounts. >> okay. yes. so we could be dealing with the situation where the person was buried by the sand may have broken bones and other injuries? >> yes, multiple paramedics and supervising paramedics on scene and standby, and all waiting to do special procedures that would be indicative of this kind of emergency. we have crush syndrome, and trauma considerations, and all of those are specific care modalities that the paramedics are trained in, in addition to their day-to-day operations, and that is what we have currently set up, and so if and when we do locate this individual, we will be able to immediately start attending to what types of efforts they would potentially need. >> and are you using any thermal images to find this victim? >> at this time, we don't have a
5:08 pm
drone, but there is a call out for, that and we are looking at that option as well, but currently, we don't have that. >> so the cadaver dogs and firefighters and bystanders are what you are using to find this person? >> yes. >> and are there any microphones used at all? >> again, at this point, we do not have those items here for this, and we are using canine teams and the actual search victims and microphones would be great in a collapse zone where we have rubble and void spaces and items like that, and this is basically a land, a plot of land on top of this individual, and so the likelihood of them being able to speak or talk is going to be very unlikely, and however, it is something that we have looked at and at this point, we were focusing on the search dogs as well as the hands on team. >> and do you know the height of
5:09 pm
the cliff -- >> i do not have that information. do you have any questions for the lieu tenant at the moment? >> can you clarify that they were on the shoreline and had their hands, and they were like touching the side? we want to make sure -- >> or were they on the cliff, itself, because that is what we are curious about. >> and so, they want to know where the two victims were located and how close the victims were right on the side or how close were they? >> again, our accounts are all based off of witness accounts and bystander accounts, and the information is two adults with a canine walking midway up on the cliff. they had their hands against what we are told is a shear cliff which is a face, and that gave way and the two adults went down with the group of dirt. the bystanders pulled one adult out, and not able to locate the second adult in that group of dirt which is massive. if you are looking at the truck
5:10 pm
behind me, it is a massive amount of dirt down there, and for me to speculate, it is exactly that, speculation, and we don't have that information. >> all right. sounds good, and also the bystanders were able to rescue the one victim and were they close to the shore when they got her out? >> more no the land side of the cliff and instead of the shore. >> so maybe that sin sigis insi how close this person is? >> and this is a distance of far away and where the water was out in relation to where the fall is at is not an indication of what we are using as indicators and looking at as the slide collapse area as well as witness accounts as to where they physically saw the victims and where we can speculate where they would come down with that grouping, and putting a lot of faith in the canine search teams to give us pointers and indicators as to where to search for the victims. >> how many search dogs at the
5:11 pm
scene. >> two, one from south san francisco fire and one from san francisco fire and we have a third canine team en route, and i don't know where that team is coming from. >> and are they use anything sort of, and any sort of, you know, like a shirt or something from the victim in order to find this person? >> the search canines are amazing resource. they are amazing to watch and what they do for the community is to be seen. these canines will basically go out and be able to scent the human, live human odor and then be able to indicate on that, and they don't need a secondary item such as a tracking dog or the trailing dog would need to go look for somebody who is stuck in the woods or lost in the woods. it is different parameters, and these dogs are tested and tested and trained and train and through the rigorous procedures. all of the dogs including south san francisco were all trained at the fema level, and all of
5:12 pm
these dogs are complete faith on my part with the ability too help us with this search. >> okay. going back to you guys, do you have any questions for lieutenant baxter? >> well, one thing, it is dark soon, and have they begun to bring the lights down to continue the search after dark? >> yeah, so, one of the questions that dan has is that it is getting dark and are you planning to bring some lights to have more visibility at the face? >> so that is a great question, dan. we have the light units that are on standby and as we get closer to nighttime, we will be more than likely dispatching those if we still need them at that point. >> okay. great. thank you so much. we are here live with the latest things that we heard right now is that basically still one person trapped underneath this dirt and still trying to find the victim, and they are saying between the 20s and 30s and they have not revealed much information about the person. and we thought they were walking on the beach, but no, they were on the cliff, and the dirt gave
5:13 pm
way and they fell, and so they are looking for the one person stuck in there, and time is of the essence now, and they are trying to figure out where to find this woman. they have no idea, and this is why they are using search dogs at the moment. back to you guys live. >> and that is a good clarification, because we were thinking that they were on the beach. >> thank you, luce. they were apparently halfway up on the cliff side. >> and if you are looking at the picture from sky 7, you can see literally tons and tons of dirt came down, and you can imagine two people in that mess, and just because one was found in one spot does not mean that one person would be near that person, because so much dirt and mud came down. >> but they are confident that the person did not end up in the water, because the water was higher at the time it happened. >> and they are trying to be optimistic but with each passing minute this search looks a little bit more grim.
5:15 pm
our coverage continues on this terrible breaking news situation at ft. funston with a person buried in a ton of sand on the beach. >> yes, a woman out there walking with a dog, and dan, you go to ft. funston, and familiar with that area. >> i have been going through for 20 years and i have been at that exact same spot with my dog and boy when he was about 2 years old and i remember that. and being out there, it is a great place. there is so many different paths through the brush up at the top. tere's a little outlet that takes you down to the beach. i have to say that you are aware that the land is always moving. it is constant erosion. >> yes, when you are up top of the cliffs you are going to be away from the cliffs because they are loose, but down there on sand walking you know to stay away, because there are clearly
5:16 pm
signs that it does slide every now and then, and so it is something that people are aware of, and the other thing is that this is a great place for dogs. and on our air over the past months and years you will see the people with their dogs stuck on the side of the cliffs. >> we showed the rescues before. >> they call in the firefighters and the helicopters the try to help out. and i mean, it is a precarious place, and you know that there is a risk there. it is something that you should really be aware of. >> and dogs can run off leash there? >> yes. and it is one of the few places that dogs can run off leash, and the circle there, dan, that we have been talking about and ft. funston opened in the early 1900s and world war ii they installed 16 inch guns at battery davis and that is what the circles are, and they were the foundations for the 16 inch guns, and the foundations were up at the top of the cliff, so you can tell the erosion that happens there at ft. funston, because those circles fell off of the cliff and clearly, you can see how much more the
5:17 pm
hillside has eroded since the circles fell, and i'm told that it is about 40 years ago. >> it even looks like you could watch it erode as we are watching it live. it is moving constantly. >> and yes, you can walk along the beach, and it is a wonderful beach, and it is constantly shifting and aware of it. and the surfer aware of it, and that is battery davis, the platform there where the 16 inch guns were installed. i checked with the surf forecast as spencer has told us earlier the low tide is happening at 6:51 tonight, and the searchers there are not going to be threatened by the water coming in until 1:33 a.m. this morning when the high tide is coming in. so, they have good conditions. >> and some time. >> and as the spokesman said, it is now a difficult job that they are doing, and they don't expect someone to have survived that slide. >> and it is different than say
5:18 pm
an avalanche where there is at least an opportunity to create a pocket, but with the sand and the mud, i don't know if it is possible. >> and we will see more of the dirt is falling down after they worked on that spot. >> and i just want to say though that i have just gotten a text from one of my law enforcement sources that it is their understanding that the victim was near the top of the cliff. her weight may have caused the hillside to go. >> oh, really? >> that is the word from the police department involved in this search right now. >> so that is what i wanted the ask you, because we knew that they were up partially on the cliff and how far up could you be? >> well, it is a hard thing to say, because you never want to blame a victim, but that is what the police sources are telling me right now. >> and obviously from the camera from this angle two-dimension, it is tough to tell, but dan, how steep is that? if you were to walk up on that, is that a difficult climb? >> yes, it is, and you would never actually walk in that area where the slide has come down,
5:19 pm
because you can see it is steep. but 100 yards to the left, there is a "v" in the hillside to walk down and it is a nice steep path full of deep sand, but you can walk down gently the sand, but they are steep, and the dogs are unpredictable. >> and who knows if they went up after the dog or what the circumstances were. dan, great perspective. >> yes, and we will continue to monitor this and this is a live look and the person will need some sort of reviving at some point if and when they find this person, and so we will be cognizant of that as we take live pictures of this. >> good point, alma. we will be careful, and the forecast, and meteorologist sanisa sandhya patel is here, and they have very good conditions there. >> yes, and looking at this video, dan and alma, we are continuing to watch the sky 7,
5:20 pm
and the land is so saturated from all of the recent storms and the north bay and san francisco and everyone is running above average with a few exceptions, and obviously the storms have loosened the ground quite a bit, and here are the conditions near ft. funston and 54 and the relative humidity is 54 degrees and the winds are not an issue. it is calm and coming up on the low tide of 7:58 of 1.4 feet, and high tide tomorrow morning and hopefully they can get this person out before the high tide comes in. a look at the winds. they are not going to be an issue at all as we take you right on through the next 12 hours or so, and excuse me, so you will see that the winds are changing direction and that is the only thing that i can foresee, and possibly being a problem for the rescuers. live doppler 7, and we don't have rain to speak of, but this is going to be different next week when a wet pattern unfolds and the temperatures in the 40s

5:26 pm
is when the slide actually happened. they have brought in actually two dogs to help with the search. these are two dogs that are trained to find people who are still alive. so, they have been searching and going up and down this hill, and the san francisco fire department says that it did rescue one person earlier, and that victim's injuries not life threatening and also found the dog that the two women are walking. >> and two cadaver dogs will be on the way within the hour, because there is real we want to update you on the
