recovery operation. what this means at this time is we will be having cadaver dogs ask other equipment. that will be working to throughout the night. and if needed suspended and carried to tomorrow morning. this is due to the prolonged duration of the incident that started around 2:30 this afternoon. and the factors we have the tide come in onto the operational area. so again we are suspending this as rescue effort. and moving into recovery and operation. you will have a number of u.s. police on scene securing the area. they have stated that the park is going to remain open. with the exception of the general area that we have this incident that's going to be occurring. probably throughout the night and into tomorrow morning. again there's a likelihood they will suspend the recovery operation tonight. that will be based on parameters with the ocean and the weather

we have. we have a lot of questions that you gave us in regard to how did this occur and what are the efforts moving forward. those will be directed to the united states pio. able to answer though moving forward. this is their jurisdiction and property. again san francisco fire department working with the agencies with this rescue effort. and due to the hazards coming up with it becoming dark and tide coming in and the fact this is going on over three hours, we have seized a rescue operation and moved into recovery mode. >> this is someone's sister, daughter. why do we theestthe bt thiov onto rescue. why not keep looking for this person? this person is stuck in there. >> great question that you posed. we have asked that a number of times. we have a number of individuals here from all the agencies.

who are very detailed oriented to the type of rescue operations. and the likelihood that is going to be a survivalable inciden is unlikely. due to the hazards we're weighing we have again collectively ceased this as a rescue operation. >> do you not have lights that can help? >> we have lights. those are not an issue. resources and equipment is not a resource. it based on the time frame we have been here. and the likelihood of this being an actual recovery for a victim that we would be able to save is at a point we're it's not likely. we are moving to a recovery position. >> what are you basing this information on? we don't know where the person might be located. how do you know there's no chance of finding them alive. >> the rescue crews dozens of

rescue crews. the canines and equipment that we have. we haven't been able to locate a victim. that would lead us to believe to continue on. weighing ou the hazards we have coming in. and this is more than likely a recovery incident. >> do you have anyone out there now? >> we have a number of firefighters out there. again this is moving to u.s. park police operation. those agencies who are on scene. will be taking this from this point on with the recovery operation. >> now you are moving onto rescuing the body of the person. exactly where are yo looking? you have people out there. >> that's correct. we are still looking within the area that we have been aggressively looking currently. and in the past.

but again, the fact is we're not seeing this as a potential salvageable rescue operation. >> are you going to have the 60 firefighters at the scene? >> no. we will reduce the number that we have on the scene. in addition to the firefighters we have a number of park police employees and police officers. and park rangers assisting. securing the scene and moving the operation forward. that includes the cadaver dogs. who are going fob assisting with this tonight and tomorrow. >> do we know anything about the victim? >> we got further information on this. as a young female adult in her 20s. they were out here at the beach. from a reliable source. they were walking close to the cliff. if you have an aerial shot you can see it goes up to a sheer area. they were around the base. when the slide came down.

again lots of questions are coming in as to the welfare of the victims we saved. reported again standing strong on this was not life threatening injuries and she's doing well. the canine involved we have animal care and control. here to take custody of the canine. and we have family members who have been contacted that will be taking custody of the canine. >> has there been any consideration as to maybe using other types of equipment that make easier to get this victim. >> we have looked at a numb of options available to us. for this specific incident. and we instill the claims we believe will be most effective. we didn't discount anything. >> the victim is believed to be in the 20s. >> that's correct. >> do you think maybe you would have brought equipment sooner you would have had had a better shot of finding this person hours ago. >> the fire department and the

partners with the public safety teams we were very aggressive at rescuing people. that's our job. and make sure we give our full effort to give you the best chance of survive. for a number of disasters and incidents and accidents. we arrived on scene we immediately went to work. we immediate will put into play a number of efforts to address the potential incident. and to our knowledge we had no delays in any type of resources coming in. again, i believe we exhausted the tools and the uppers we have available. with the time frame that we had. again we decided to move this from a ror ri. >> is it not uncommon dogs would not locate someone? >> it is not uncommon. there's a number of factors into ply. the odors and scents there. it's my understanding that the dog did key in the dogs keyed in

on a numb of sites. you have to remember there were two individuals there. our crews were looking within the areas and were not able to locate any type of actual viable individual or any signs of an individual within the location. >> is there a possibility the victim is so deep in there it's hard for the dogs to find her? >> for me to say that again will be speculation. my heart is with all of you with this. full heartedly. we want to see that person safe and being alive. but unfortunately the facts this incident is tragic and led to the point it's recovery faze. and will continue to move forward. >> did you try a cell phone? >> we did try all type of options available. including metal detecter and krn. none has been working. it has been confirmed nobody has

heard from the individual since this incident. and was also confirmed they were a good distance from the water. it's likely that the individual is somewhere within the large amount of dirt. that occurred with the slide. >> when you spoke to the other victim. and you were able to rescue. has that other woman said anything about what her friend or family member, how close was she to the cliff side? >> i haven't had the opportunity to talk to you. i don't have the information. >> does this recovery begin now? >> this begins now. we don't have any lap time. we continue to move forward with the efforts. the difference is we're recalling the rescue workers and again for rescue worker to be called off. if you saw the workers coming down. the long faces. they're sad there's an effort to make sure we're addressing rescue workers as well. this is an emotional state. it's not in our dna to give up.

i don't believe we have given up. we looked at what we have in front of us. and based on the facts we have the hazards we have. we have had to leave this from a recovery operation. >> the first victim buried waist deep, how deep was she? >> third party accounts by the individuals who were digging her out of the dirt. she was buried in the dirt. >> if you were to rescue this body in the next hour, what do you plan to do? >> that's going to be a question for u.s. park police. what they would do at the recovery point. when they locate it. typically what happens is you take a lot of dig inty and care in that body recovery. this is a sad event. the family would be notified. i know that the family has been

>> the ground is saturated from heavy rain. at the moment we have temperatures on location there. of about 50 degrees. humidity 43%. wind is calm. about 8 miles per hour. we don't have any gusts right now. the low tide will occur at 7:28 p.m. which is about an hour 16 minutes from now. the tide is reseeding. that shouldn't be a problem. high tide over night at 2:16 a.m. tide won't be rising again until later this evening. and as for the gusts, once again wind gusts not more than five miles per hour. over the next several hours. and into the over night hours. so what we have darkness falling. sunset occurred at 5:56. there's a bit of evening light out there. it's getting darker. and probably be dark in about the next half hour. >> all right.

and we are taking a live look from sky 7. we see one of the search and rescue dogs still on the landslide that happened around 2:30 this afternoon. presumably one woman still

buried under all that sand and dirt. >> sadly after three hours now, they have come to the conclusion that she will not be found alive. from a rescue effort that was frantic to a recovery operation. which is much more pain staking and not nearly as hurried. one person fts rescued following this slide. a woman being put in the ambulance. she was clearly and understandably shaken. >> yeah. tonight she is at the hospital. paramedics who treated her sat the scene say the j j not life threatening. >> 60 firefighters were working this scene. and two rescue dogs. those firefighters were using shovels and hands. to try to find the woman under that sand and dirt. >> dan here. you spent a will the of time there. >> it's a great location.

trails up above the cliffs. which i have done over 20 years. you can make your way down to the sand as well. and enjoy the beach. i want to point out spencer said the low tide 7:28 tonight. rite now the search is off. the rescue is off. it's recovery. and right now is an urgent time. with low tide it's not going to get any better than this for the crews there on the scene. my law enforcement sources say you should be seeing heavy equipment coming in. they will no longer use the shovels. they should use a bulldozer to recover the body. i'm sorry to say. before the tides come up. there's a small window now. the water will start coming back in. >> they want to get the equipment in now. >> exactly. >> do the digging. >> because as of 7:28 the water

the tides turn around. and the water -- a few hours. you should be seeing the lights come on. the bulldozers arrive. there is a question as to exactly where the women were when this happened. i believe we have some sound here. of the spokesman talking about exactly where they were as the slide came down. >> these two adults with a canine were walking midway up on the cliff. they had their hands against a face cliff. that gave way. and the two adults went down with the dirt. the bystanders pulled one adult out. and not able to locate the second. within that group of dirt. >> my law enforcement sources tell me the growing opinion the belief is perhaps the women's weight caused the land slip. there's a difficult thing to say. you never want to blame the victim. that is what law enforcement

and we continue to monitor breaking news. this is a live look from sky 7. where a woman was buried in that landslide. right about in the middle of the screen. one woman was rescued. one woman is still in there. >> tons and tons of sand and mud came down. today as the two were up on the hillside. and happened in an instant. this afternoon. and for a couple hours the search was frantic to find her alive. that has been stopped and it is a recovery operation. and they were expecting to see heavy equipment brought in.

fairly soon. low tide reaches its peek. they can get the equipment in and work quickly during low tide. with the heavy equipment to find her body. >> sky map 7 measured the distance from the top of the cliff to the beach. it's 159 feet. which gives you an idea of how big the slide is. and what the crews are facing. >> very dangerous. slides and erosion there all the time. two people caught in it today. spencer has been watching the conditions there. in terms of how much daylight they'll have. and also what the tides situation is. >> fading quickly. it will be dark soon. and the tides are still reseeding. we have about an hour before the tides reach the lowest point. here's a look clear skies over the bay area. you can see in the view. we have the after glow of sunset. current techs 50 degrees in san francisco. mountain view and san jose.

here's a view at the golden gate. skies are clear. traffic is moving freely. cool 47 in napa. 49 livermore. and the view from the rooftop camera here looking over. the forecast features. mainly dry over the week. there's a chance of light rain in the north bay. late sunday. we'll have widespread rain for much of next week. likely to fall in the north bay. which is not uncommon. over night lows drop into the upper 20s and low 30s in the north bay. main will mid-30s. upper 30s to about 40 around thn hitomo in tup0s. and at conditions for the chi chinese new year parade. starting in the afternoon. 5:15. close to evening. we'll see mainly sunny skies during the day. with a few clouds moving in in the evening. temperatures low to mid-50s.

the san francisco. fire and police crews were digging to recover a woman's body from a landslide. >> the fire department says the call came in at 2:52 this afternoon. they learned two women were walking on the cliff side when it gave way. one of the women was rescued. another was trapped. >> we saw firefighters digging at the side of the cliff. we saw rescue dog being led along the cliff side. >> 6:00 we came on the air here. the fire department announced the rescue is a recovery mission. and cadaver dogs would be brought in. >> we put together a map to give you an idea of where the slide took place. >> now, a large portion of the cliff came down onto the beach. our technology on sky 7 measured the distance from the top of the cliff to the bottom. about 160 feet.

to be precise. >> we have seen some rescue dogs helping with the search. turned recovery tonight. >> joining us on the telephone. fire district chief. three dogs from his task force are headed there. what are they going to be doing? can you give us a sense of the job at hand immediately. >> the three dogs currently one that's already there, belong to san fan fire. and mountain view fire department. all three of the dogs are on the urban search and rescue team. all three of the dogs and handlers have been involved with the hurricane responses and the campfire. and the remains recovery search of the last year that we have seen north part of the state. the two dogs that are currently there, they're proficient in

live search. the dog coming out of mountain view. george. is handle tim, that dog specifically is trained in certified for what's called human remains discovery. that dog is able to find if there's a deceased person. it's able to clue in or queue in on that area. where the body could be found. until they have three dogs that are requested. we're very aware of all three dogs what they're capable of. they're trying to hone in on where they need to be. versus spending how big this area is, that they would get through the entire area. that would take a long time. i don't know if they ordered heavy equipment. it may or may not be possible to get it there. you want to narrow down where yu need to be and don't waste resources to get to the person.

that is still in the pile. >> it's gotten dark quickly. we're racing against the clock with the tide turning. the two dogs that were the urban rescue, do they not do anything at this point? >> they'll still search. i won't say they cannot find someone. it will be scent. that's the key here. what makes is difficult is wet soil is much more difficult to work in. so because it traps the scent. that's part of what probably caused this collapse. the wet soil. it's a difficult situation. remember, on a recovery, i won't say -- they're in a hurry. you may need to stop and restart. make the decision that tonight they don't work at night and start in the morning. and

ri risk. the worst is injuring somebody because a mistake is made. you have to be careful working around the areas that haven't been impacted. because those can fluff off as well. you have to watch where people are working. that's why if you can get heavy equipment it's more safe to do the operation using back hoes and excavators and move more soil. >> chief, the officials on site said they may call it off tonight. depending once they get a handle. this is -- just curious in terms of the training and the dogs. what's the difference between a rescue dog and a cadaver dog in terms of what they are serging and sniffing for? what's the difference in training and operating. >> a basic.

your large breed dogs live up to 12, 14 years. the larger about eight to ten. smaller breeds 12 to 14. somewhere in there. it takes at least two years to train a dog just up to the rescue level. and not every dog passes. so it's a huge investment of time. it's very rigorous. and then to go to the next level of human remains discovery. really it's fine tuned is the senses of the animal. to be able to pick up human scent. there's dogs that can search in water. it's amazing. the dogs that are there are orking against the . conditions that they have. these are fine tunensum all the fire agencies should be commended for the amount of effort, time and involvement to

have the resources. the dogs can only do so much. and again this is probably some of the worst conditions you can have. it's wet, heavy soil. which means scent is already a problem. >> let's hope they can get where they can hone it down to an area. and when one dog hits on an area, we bring in other dogs to confirm or get a second hit hopefully on the area. and confirm that is where you could have somebody. >> all right. chief. thanks very much. >> we continue to follow this. recovery mission.

the courtroom today. these are pictures from last week. outside the courtroom, victims express their displeasure today. almost unanimously they cited his claim to be a man of christian faith. >> when he gets to prison he's going to grab everybody and become the local pastor and in prison and get himself out early. >> they lost $21,000 for a promise. they are owed $14,000. she didn't go to the hearing because she feels she needs to move on with her life. they hired a different contractor to complete the sun room. they say that they barely started. it's hard to let go of the anger. >> i don't feel like it was justice served. it's nice they are told to pay us back. i don't think anybody will get money. >> prosecutor also expressed

when it felt like everybody not only started shooting more threes. but playing faster. they go hand in hand. the three point numbers. attempts have gone way up for everybody across the board. so has pace. so part of the idea is get the ball up the floor. as quickly as possible. and shoot threes in transition. that was never really something that was done when i was playing. if you shot a quick three in transition the coach looks at you. i don't care who it was. like what are yu doing. that's a good shot and you have a whole league full of coaches and players who are implementing systems or practicing looking for those three point shots constantly. and it's been really dramatic. >> big men can shoot. that was one of the demarcus can shoot. kd obviously. is that one of the when you look

>> finally tonight. what really matters. we are reminded tonight life is precious. as you have seen this hour we covered the tragic breaking news. a woman lost her life in the blink of an eye. apparently climbing on the sandy hillside with another woman and dog. tons of sand suddenly gave way and sliding down. more than 100 feet. carrying them along with it. one woman only partially buried and rescued. the dog made it out. sadly, not the other woman. a beautiful friday afternoon. perfect day for a walk and start the weekend. what other plans did they have? a nice dinner tonight maybe. perhaps oscar party on sunday. neither could possibly have known it would end like this. we think about that poor woman buried in that sand. what really matters is to cherish the moments because they can change ever so quickly. i always love to hear from you. follow me on twitter and
