it's saturday, february 23rd. thanks for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. since we have no rain, we're going to focus on the temperatures. the reason why we're doing that with sunrise less than an hour away is because at that time these temperatures will be getting a little bit warmer. so right now you are just above freezing in castro valley at 33, but down in fremont, a milder 43. the rest of the bay area, boy, it's cold. pleasanton 30 degrees, 32 in los gatos with 30 in santa rosa, 44 on the coast. so we are much colder this morning, the winds are calm. for the chinese new year parade with the clouds increasing, it should be a pretty nice afternoon. mid-50s for you downtown and then dropping through the 50s by about 7:00. so actually not a bad day.

the clouds will be favoring the north bay. we're dry for tomorrow except in the far north bay and then next week, hope you didn't put the rain gear away. we'll talk about it in detail in a few minutes. new this morning, two people are recovering in the hospital after the car they were in slammed into a tree in san jose. it happened just before 10:00 last night on tully and lake cunningham road. the car ended up pinned on its side against the tree. about 40 firefighters worked to get the two people out. it took about 30 minutes to rescue the first person and about an hour to get the second person. crews had to dismantle the car to get access to both of them. they both have significant injuries. san francisco public defender jeff adachi has died. he suffered an apparent heart attack while traveling. he served in the public defender's office for 33 years. he was first elected to lead the office in 2001. adachi was one of the few elected public defenders in the country and the only one in california. he was known as a watchdog for police misconduct and was a

vocal critic of san francisco police during the racist scandal that rocked the department in 2015. adachi was also a vocal advocate for bail reform. he ran for mayor of san francisco in 2011 with the hopes of fixing the city's pension problems. attorney john burris knew him well. >> he was a bulldog and had a real sense of righteousness about his positions and he believed very strongly in the work that he was involved and that the prosecution had to prove it and that everybody was entitled to aggressive representation. >> adachi is survived by his wife and daughter. he was 59 years old. san francisco mayor london breed released this statement saying as one of the few elected public defenders in our country, jeff always stood up for those who didn't have a voice, have been ignored and overlooked and who needed a real champion. man bued aco iano.d.

luz pena has the details. >> reporter: with shovels and even their bare hands, over 60 fire worked for hours to rescue a woman buried under the sand. >> bystanders were telling us that they observed two female adults with a canine walking along the cliff side. they were articulating that they had their hand up against the wall and that cliffside gave way. >> reporter: the first victim was taken to sf general with nn-life threatening injuries. firefighters brought in search dogs in hopes to find the second victim. for several minutes they stayed quiet and waited to see if they heard anything from under the landslide and even tried the victim's cell phone with no w operations and will be moving this to a recovery operation. what this means at this time is we will be having cadaver dogs coming in. >> reporter: javier was on his way home when he got a

notification on his phone about the landslide. he grabbed his shovel and arrived to the scene to help. >> right now it's somebody's family member. we'll try to dig. heartbroken. >> reporter: he says that for hours firefighters worked together and formed a perimeter to dig every inch of the landslide until the very last minute. >> there's a person down there right now. they're trying, you know. they're trying. >> reporter: this is now a u.s. park police incident and the officers will remain at the scene the entire morning. in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. take a look, you can see the outline of the slide area showing a chunk of sand missing from the cliffside leaving a massive pile of debris on the beach at ft. funston. here's a look at this before and after comparison of the landslide. on the left is a google earth image from last year. on the right what the scene looked like from sky 7 yesterday afternoon. you can see a big portion of the

cliff just collapsed onto the beach. this isn't the first slide in the area. an abc 7 viewer sent us this photo of ft. funston just south of the current slide that was closed in 2015 because of a landslide. natural erosion was the cause. it closed the middle trail for several months leaving a 20-foot drop in place limiting access to the beach. we first sent out the alert about this story through the abc 7 news app at 3:54 yesterday afternoon. to receive breaking news updates like this one, download the app and enable push alerts. new this morning, senator dianne feinstein clashed with a group of young children in san francisco over climate change policy. >> i hear what you're saying, but we're the people who voted you. you're supposed to listen to us. >> how old are you? >> i'm 16. >> well, you didn't vote for me. >> sunrise movement, a group that encourages young people to combat climate change posted this video on twitter. they met inside the senator's

san francisco office yesterday. the children asked her to support the green new deal resolution, but says she doesn't agree with the resolution and there's no way to pay for it. the group says the senator's reaction was with, quote, smugness and disrespect and that this is why young people desperately want new leadership in congress. now to the oakland teachers strike. after a second day on the picket lines, there seems to be no end in sight. as negotiations continue, the union is making it clear they are not backing down on their demands that include a raise, smaller class sizes, and an end to school closures. >> the community of oakland, parents, are standing strong for community schools and saying no to school closures. >> we're told if significant progress is not made this weekend, 3,000 ponchos have already been ordered for people to be ready to strike in the rain next week.

the time now is 6:06. rec centers and libraries aren't the only places oakland parents are sending their kids during the strike. some moms are taking students into their own homes. here's abc 7 news anchor eric thomas. >> reporter: at tara stoops' home in the oakland hills, video games were only one of the stations the six kids she was watching could take advantage there was also math and reading. they even took a hike today. here the kids admitted school was important, but they didn't mind having a friday off. >> i want the teachers to get better pay, but also some part of my brain says it's fun not to go to school. >> i actually really enjoy spending time with the kids, but i appreciate the teachers and all of the energy that it takes to do that. >> reporter: it's lunchtime at jen houser's home which has been converted into what she desperately hopes will be a temporary day care. >> if you can hear me, clap your hands. >> reporter: in addition to her own two kids, she's watching ten

others whose parents have to work. all are students at the oakland unified school district's melrose leadership academy. jen says she is ready and willing to help as much as she can. >> i mean we're very lucky to have a big backyard and flexible work schedules, so we knew there was no other alternative. >> reporter: the kids are in first through third grade. most would actually rather be in school today. all of them support the striking teachers. >> the teachers work very hard and we want them to get paid enough. they don't get paid enough because the school district is saying that they don't have the money, but they do. >> sometimes maybe we don't have the nicest teachers but at least we get to learn stuff. >> reporter: both moms say they're in it for as long as it takes for the teachers to get what they want. in oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. the 91st annual academy awards are tomorrow right here on abc 7. one of the biggest movies to

watch, "black panther." it's been nominated for seven oscars. dion lim is in hollywood with the three local men hoping to pick up one of those awards. >> reporter: one of the biggest elements making "black panther" an international blockbuster success is something you may not have even been aware of. but you most definitely felt. >> there's an important message to convey with what this movie is doing and what it means to so many people around the world. but it's also got to be wrapped in the fun package of a marvel movie. >> reporter: steve bodiker, brandon proctor and benjamin bert all bay area natives and residents worked together with a team of about 15 on the sound design and mixing of the film, now nominated for an oscar for best sound editing and mixing, a team effort. >> on this job i was mixing dialogue. steve and i both shared music

"black panther" is up against a tough field in both sound categories, including "bohemian rhapsody," "a star is born" and "first man." the team isn't making any predictions for the big night. >> i have a really good feeling that i'm going to have a good time. i try not to think about it too much. >> you know, to be honest, the nomination already is the win. there's so many amazing sounding films and so many talented people working on this.

6:15 is our time and here's a live look outside at the abc 7 exploratorium camera pointed at the bay bridge this morning. thanks for starting your day with abc 7 news. so we've got a break in the rain this weekend, but some changes are on the way. lisa argen comes back with the full forecast in just a little bit. police in florida issued an arrest warrant for new england patriots owner robert kraft on charges of soliciting prostitution. police say they have videotape of the 77-year-old man paying for a sex act inside a day spa. the arrest came as part of a six-month multi agency prostitution and human trafficking sting operation that ended in multiple arrests. >> yes, sir. he is one of the individuals. h >> tuld be mr. robert >> robert the new england patriots? >> yes, sir.

>> and what is he being charged with? >> he's being charged with the same offenses as the others, and that is soliciting another to commit prostitution. >> kraft will be charged with a misdemeanor and will have to appear in court. the patriots issued a statement. quote, we categorically deny that mr. kraft engaged in any illegal activity. because it is a judicial matter, we will not be commenting further. the trump administration is dealing a blow to planned parenthood. it is stripping money from family planning organizations that refer women to abortion providers. the $286 million program supports family planning for 4 million women. planned parenthood will fight this through every possible avenue. the oakland a's are stepping up their efforts to address potential environmental concerns around their proposed waterfront ballpark. yesterday the team announced a partnership with the west oakland environmental indicators project. the ball club plans to work with the organization to develop

what's called a community benefits agreement for the ndhe area. the a's are hoping to build a 34,000 seat ballpark at howard terminal near jack london square in time for the 2023 recd 50 p single day after last weekend's heavy rains and more is on the way. for repair crews, it's a never-ending job. we learn just now drivers can get action when they encounter potholes. abc 7 news reporter david louie followed a road crew in san jose. >> reporter: this morning, this road crew was in the eastern foothills of san jose. a short time later it hit willow glen and then blossom valley. always on the move, filling holes with asphalt, spending one to three minutes at each location. how many potholes a day? >> we do about 60 to 125 potholes a day. >> repter: tt'a lo ror y keepine >> yes. >> reporter: it's true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. san jose says its pothole repair

priority is based on complaints that are made by phone or on the my san jose mobile app. >> if we know about a pothole, you let us know, we'll send somebody to check it out right ay. t >> reporter: natalie has been running across lots of potholes but didn't know how to report them. she has one street in mind. >> it had a pothole every ten feet and they were deep and it was making my car like swerve and i just couldn't believe that that was in san jose. >> reporter: another driver told us how a car nearly collided into her because of a pothole. >> i was just maybe a few feet like to the side and they almost swerved into my lane trying to avoid a pothole because it was pretty big. >> reporter: with 2400 miles of streets, san jose's transportation department logs 11,000 pothole complaints per year. i needs to hear from the public to remedy the ongoing problem as storms and heavy traffic cause road wear. san jose has a very ambitious goal to try to repair all of the potholes reported to them within 48 hours, so what's their success rate?

currently 95%. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. weatherwise is cold outside. meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast for us. >> hi, chris, good morning to you. with the clear sky and light winds, radiational cooling at its maximum. once again we have a system drop down from the north and one in the pacific that will link up early next week. so from early to the middle of next week we're looking at heavy rain potentially in the north bay. i want to show you a computer model that is way out there in terms of the precip accumulation. that's in just a couple of minutes. right now check out the view from mt. tam. it is beautiful out there. boy, if you can stay inside the next few hours, i would do so. here are the milder numbers, 44 san francisco, 40 in oakland, 39 in mountain view, 37 san jose, 31 morgan hill, 40 half boomoon bay. sunrise about 40 minutes away,

and it is 30 in santa rosa, 34 in napa. look at petaluma at 30. 29 by the delta, 37 in concord, 31 in livermore. so just with a little puff of wind, we do have windchill factors in the mid-20s in some of these outlying areas. you've got that frost on the windshield. if you wait another 30 minutes to an hour, it will be definitely going away because the numbers will be warming up quickly. at least we'll be getting away from some of those frosty numbers as soon as the sun comes up. so you look at the flag blowing there. so in san francisco we are milder. so chilly to start, mainly dry this weekend. the far north bay tomorrow could see a slight chance of showers late and then we're looking at wide spread rain next week. the big question is where the focus of the very heavy rain will be. but first things first. it's the weekend and we're looking at a few increasing clouds making for a cloudier day in the north bay. more sun in the south bay. as we get to your early monday morning commute, unfortunately the rain increases by midday so

we'll bring in our storm impact scale. it's a 2. on this model 3.5 inches to 5 inches. but an inch and a half to 3.5 inches in the valleys of the north bay and anywhere from a half inch to an inch in the south bay. as we look at this system, still the rain begins on monday, continues into tuesday. here is wednesday. a break on thursday. but then more rain is likely as we head into next friday and the weekend. so as we look at the malls, not only does it bring the rain into the north bay, but look at the purples here. 7.5 inches in novato. now, the other model is bringing inen hal moon bay 5 inches. so blending the two of these, we're looking at a pretty good rain event in the early to middle part of next week. unfortunately the snow levels will be at 5,000 to 6,000 feet. we're looking at significant runoff of the snow in the mountains, so a winter storm watch through wednesday. but today it's going to be a nice afternoon in san francisco

that needs to be done on the 63-year-old span. an additional 31 joints on the upper deck will be replaced after work finishes on the failed joint that dumped concrete two weeks ago. the initial issue closed the bridge for hours, snarling traffic. work will continue for several months. later this year caltrans will replace 30 more joints on the lower deck. the time now is 6:26. a san francisco man is fighting back after the dmv rejected his application for a vanity license plate. robert haines wanted the plate to read lthrddy. that's shorthand for leather daddy. the dmv denied his application saying the configuration is a term of lust. he contacted scott weiner. he said to boil the leather community down to lust is backwards thinking. >> it's not just about one vanity plate, it's about a major agency in california sending a signal that one of our communities, the leather community, is simply about sex

up their shields. the situation is all over humanitarian aid. venezuela's current government is blocking that aid, so residents are trying to dismantle the roadblocks so that trucks can come through. we'll keep monitoring this and bring you any updates throughout the morning. r & b singer r. kelly is expected to appear in court in chicago today after turning himself into police on sexual abuse charges. this is the singer's mug shot. three of the four victims were younger than 17 at the time of the alleged incidents. the singer's attorney dismissed the charges and calls the accusers liars. r. kelly has been under investigation in chicago, georgia, and new york. the charges stem from the lifetime documentary series "surviving r. kelly." insurance officials are on the ground combing through areas damaged by the camp fire in butte county. the department of insurance says staff members are helping victims complete insurance claims. nearly 14,000 homes were

destroyed and 86 people were killed in the november inferno. california's insurance commissioner says the agency will do whatever it can to speed up the process, but it's going to take time. >> i'm not kidding myself. this is going to take a long -- it's going to be a long process to recovery, but it's critical that people reach out to us so that we help navigate that for them. >> last month insurance officials reported more than $11.4 billion in insured losses. that number is expected to goup in april when new numbers are released. another important step took place in the eventual reopening of the salesforce transit center in san francisco. the center has now been closed for 151 days since cracks were found on two steel girders over fremont street. the pier review panel overseeing the repair signed off yesterday on the final design to fix the first street section of the structure. any additional repairs should be completed next month. >> methodically going through the process of finding any other

losing by a final of 8-1. that's a wrap on morning sports. have a great weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. turning to weather now, the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. i've heard from a lot of my friends out there saying how cold it is. you're certainly right. in the north bay and in the east bay you are freezing. we have a little wind to go with that, adding a windchill factor. in napa and santa rosa, it takes you down into the 20s. even though it's dry now and will be dry tomorrow, we are still looking at our storm impact scale for next week. late tomorrow, 20% chance of showers in the far north bay but then on monday we bring in our storm impact scale. it's a 1. the rain continues to increase in intensity and winds as well. tuesday looking at a level 2. wednesday and thursday, the verdict still out on how strong these subsequent systems will be, but it looks like it's going to be very wet out there. take a look at lake tahoe.

hills camera. this weekend, rain returns into next week. throughout the weekend you'll notice the increasing clouds, especially today in the north bay. by monday here comes the rain. you may escape the morning commute being wet, but by the afternoon we'll certainly see the increasing showers. so we're bringing in our storm impact scale monday, tuesday. it's a 2. we'll see the rain increase in the north bay first. whether or not it sinks south soon enough to bring you increasing rain throughout the week, that will be what we're watching because the rain looks like it will be everywhere by tuesday and wednesday. a break on thursday and then it av of wet weather friday into next saturday. so the timing on this certainly not set in stone. it wil told you about. above 5,000 feet we're looking at 5 to 12 inches, but we're looking at rain at lake level. with all that snow, 15 feet of snow, we're certainly looking at some runoff and some flooding
