good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is "abc7 mornings." >> it's sunday, february 24th. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris. good morning to you. plenty of clouds, and with the cloud cover, not quite as cold this morning. maybe you're feeling the change. and as we look at live doppler 7, we are anticipating rain late tonight in the north bay, but temperatures, look at the 40s in castro valley. 42 there. 46 in union city and 47 in oakland with low 40s in santa rosa. so, this does translate into about 13 degrees warmer for you in santa rosa, nine degrees warmer than you were yesterday morning in san jose.

so, lots of clouds, not as cold. low to mid-40s for the coast and the bay, inland about 40 throughout the morning hours. and we're dry today. a one on our storm impact scale tomorrow, then the rain really gets going into tuesday and wednesday, and we'll talk about amounts and timing in a few minutes. chris? >> lisa, thank you. an autopsy on the body of san francisco public defender jeff adanchi is due today or tomorrow, one day after his death. abc7's i-team obtained the police report providing answers about what happened. adachi was just 59 years old. abc7 i-team reporter dan noyes has more on what we've learned from that report. >> reporter: i've spoken with san francisco city and county officials who are saddened and stunned by jeff adachi's death. he leaves behind a wife and a daughter. this police report provides new details of what happened on friday evening. the incident report obtained by the abc7 i-team says a female who identified herself as katerina called 911 from the

home on telegraph place near coit tower at 5:41 p.m. friday, and police responded. but the officers, now en route, were called off. the medical examiner's office telling them they did not have reason to believe it was a crime scene, but the death was still under investigation. officers deemed that to be suspicious, so they continued to the ground-floor apartment, took these pictures and spoke with witnesses. one woman told police she had known adachi for ten years, that he asked to use the apartment and she gave him keys. that same woman said she received a call from catarina, who sounded hysterical and said there was something wrong with jeff. she said she had been at dinner with adachi, where he complained of stomach pains. he was unresponsive and she called for help on his phone. the apartment shows the interior, unmade bed, alcohol, cannabis gummies and two syringes that may have been left by paramedics. a police spokesman told me

tonight "the ocme," the office of the chief medical examiner" is the lead agency in the death investigation. sfp sdnk assisting. this is a death case with cause to be determined. there are no signs of foul play." a police report says paramedics arrived about ten minutes after the 911 call, started cpr and took him to california pacific, e curious picture from the police file is a receipt for two t-shirts from just this past wednesday at a mall in bogota, colombia. no idea exactly what this means, if anything. clearly, more answers to come. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc7 news. >> the death of jeff adachi has surprised many, including neighbors of the north beach residence where investigators were sent. here's abc7 news reporter luiz peña with their reaction. >> i'm really shocked to learn that, you know, they found jeff's body there. such a sad thing. >> reporter: in this quiet neighborhood, neighbors are

searching for answers. >> well, i just came down and kind of looked up the street and i saw the vehicles, but no people. >> reporter: several residents say they saw an ambulance and a fire truck around 6:30 p.m. >> when i came home, just i saw one ambulance stopped there and i didn't see the police cars. >> reporter: one man who lives a block away didn't see the emergency response. he says adachi didn't frequent the area. >> i was setting up on my couch last night dealing with all of the phone calls and texts and e-mails and had no idea. i didn't know until my wife just told me. >> reporter: so you never saw him around here before? >> no. i've -- you know, that's funny, not in the neighborhood. >> reporter: john serves on the san francisco police commission. the police making body for the city's police department. >> jeff was superhuman, meaning that he went from first thing in the morning until late at night working, at the office, in

material or if she was possibly removed by the strong ocean currents. >> yesterday, heavy equipment was brought onto the beach below the ft. fundston bluffs to dig through the dirt and sand in hopes of finding the woman's body. the victim was in her 20s. she had been walking a dog with a friend on friday when the land beneath the two gave way. the friend and the dog survived the collapse. as regs to ft. fundston know, the area is prone to landslides, but friday's was the first human casualty. this video shows land giving way southwest of the great highway. a man visiting from dallas captured the moment on his cell phone. no one was hurt during that incident. the national parks service reminds visitors to be extra cautious when visiting coastal areas. developing news on that amazon prime air cargo plane crash in houston. this morning, federal investigators are trying to figure out why the plane went

down near bush intercontinental airport. the atlas air flight was 30 miles away from the airport when it crashed into trinity bay in chambers county yesterday. video from the scene shows debris scattered across a field. first responders reported seeing bed sheets, women's clothing, and other items consistent with cargo shipments floating in the water. the boeing 767 was headed to houston from miami. >> i've been told there were probably three personnel that were flying and operating the plane. obviously, that ntsb i'm sure will confirm that with the company. but knowing what i saw, i don't believe anybody could survive it. >> last night, ntsb and faa investigators arrived on the scene. crews have recovered one body from the wreckage. two more people on board the plane are feared to be dead. officials in florida say a flight instructor was killed when his single-engine plane crashed into a home in winter haven, florida.

yesterday the plane nose-dived into a house, trapping a 17-year-old girl in her bedroom. she was rescued and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the faa and ntsb are also investigating this plane crash. new this morning, san francisco wants to help neighbors who live near music venues by sound-proofing them. according to "the examiner," a new program called the music venue sound mitigation assistance program, would offer grants of up to $25,000. the money would go to bars, restaurants, and concert halls to sound-proof their establishments. the program is scheduled to start later this year with an initial $150,000 to hand out. sky 7 flew over the annual lunar new year's street fair in san francisco's chinatown. it was a precursor to the chinese new year parade, welcoming the year of the pig. the 161-year-oldasorfr unhesigh. >> this is my favorite parade.

>> reporter: it can only mean one thing, san francisco's massive annual chinese new year parade has arrived. >> it's got lights, it's got noise, it's got community, it's got kids. i think it's a fabulous parade. >> one, two, three! >> happy new year! >> reporter: folks here are extra happy because it's a dry night, but it is very cold. just about everyone is bundled up. they have to be if they want to enjoy the famous nighttime parade. >> this is chinese new year, right? i never saw their culture or anything, so i just wanted to watch the culture, how they perform and everything. >> reporter: others came beyond prepared by making their own themed costumes, equipped with gloves and built-in layers. this couple spent 12 hours making their costumes for this . last year was the year of the dog. and then before that was the year of the rooster. that was fun. >> reporter: while this might be part of their tradition, others are here for the more traditional ones.

shopping center massage parlor in florida. details about the charges against kraft will be released this week. policehey caught more than 200 men in a six-month investigation. owners of the spa allegedly brought women from china as sex workers. negotiations to try to end the teachers' strike in oakland will continue today. teachers began striking on thursday, demanding higher pay and smaller class sizes. they're asking for a 12% pay hike while the district is offering 8.5%. another issue that's being brought up in the talks is school closures. the union is preparing for the strike to last through the week. pg&e will not award $130 million in bonuses to its employees because of its bankruptcy filing. the interim ceo delivered the news in an e-mail on friday, according to the san francisco "chronicle." the president of the union representing 3,700 company workers opposed the decision, saying it's unfair to punish workers who had nothing to do with the wildfires. we're less than 12 hours away from hollywood's biggest

night and the preparations are under way. abc7 news anchor dion lim is in hollywood with all of the excitement on the red carpet. >> reporter: thousands of people are working around the clock to make sure the red carpet is just perfect for the big night. in the meantime, people are preparing their predictions of who's going to win big. >> over the shoulder. >> reporter: sorry, folks, these aren't quite the stars hitting the red carpet, just the stand-ins so the celebs are photographed and recorded just right. there's a lot to do. before hollywood's biggest night. while the preparations are happening, here on the red carpet we wanted to know what the people think! their predictions for best picture, best actor and best actress. >> i have to say, we really are torn. we have two favorites. we're huge, huge bradley cooper/gaga fans. can't help it.lo"a star is born three times. but "bohemian rhapsody" was also amazing, so we can't lose.

he's greatest. yeah, i think he vote. >> reporter: in hollywood, i'm dion lim, abc7 news. >> dion has been reporting from hollywood all weekend long. today's coverage starts at 1:30 p.m. on the red carpet. the opening ceremony begins at 3:30. the awards will be handed out starting at 5:00 p.m., and the post awards show will begin around 8:00. you can catch it all right here on abc7. turning to weather now and the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, we're off to a chilly start. >> we are, chris, but as you notice, we do have a lot of clouds around here, so it's actually mitigating some of that chill that we had yesterday morning, and we'll look at the temperatures in just a moment. but we do have a lot of rain to talk about for the upcoming workweek, really monday night into tuesday. so we're looking at a flash flood watch in effect for marin and sonoma with some very hefty totals. it is a two for tuesday into wednesday. so, the rain gets going on monday in the north bay, and it's going to stay there throughout the day until it pushes to the south monday night into tuesday, and that's when

we're going to see the heaviest rain. now, we're going to update these totals. we're looking at 5 to 9 inches in the north bay mountains with 3 to 5 inches in the valleys and lesser amounts, 1 to 2 inches elsewhere. but today mainly dry. you see a few areas of green to the north, looking at perhaps a few light sprinkles up through sonoma. otherwise, it's a cloudy day, it's slightly milder, but we're adding in the rainfall here right on through thursday morning and looking at some very hefty totals north of the golden gate. 6 to 7 inches for santa rosa and calistoga. so the impact mainly in the north bay, and then it's going to make that push tuesday into wednesday bringing over an inch and a half in san francisco and over an inch pretty much elsewhere. but check out ben lomond, up to 3 inches there. santa cruz mountains could see up to 5 inches. so when it doe yo see perhaps some urban flooding here, but the main focus will be in the north bay. so, as we go through the timeline here, you'll notice

that into monday night we're still looking at the heavy rain in the north bay. and then it's going to take through the day on tuesday. here we are 11:00, still heavy rain north. then we get that push south into wednesday, and then by thursday we do get a break. so, it is a couple days away, but it is going to impact all of us, especially the folks commuting. and then in terms of the temperatures, it's a warm system. so, a winter storm watch in effect monday into wednesday. 10 to 20 inches, about lake level. but you have to go up to about 7,000 feet to get accumulating snow of 1 to 3 feet. the wind gusts, 55 miles an hour. could see ridgetop gusts of 100 miles an hour. so, back to right now. we are cloudy, we are milder. numbers in the upper 40s. 48 san francisco, 46 in hayward. low 40s in santa rosa, so, certainly a big change from yesterday. we're looking at anywhere from 8 to 13 degrees milder. and as we look outside, looks pretty calm looking with -- we'll go with

cloudy skies, not as cold. rain late tonight in the north bay and then rainy and windy for everyone as that system pushes south monday night into tuesday. so, highs today in the low 50s san francisco. cloudy skies. 57 in san jose, 55 in santa rosa. and the accuweather seven-day forecast for oscars sunday, a chance in the north bay today. slightly milder out there. then scattered showers mainly north tomorrow, one on our storm impact scale. and then bringing the rain, heavier rain with gusty winds tuesday into wednesday, and looking at the rain scattering out of the bay area on thursday. so you download our accuweather app, and once again, the russian river, napa river we'll be watching flooding with those two rivers in particular in the north bay. >> and as you said, the forecast can always change, because yesterday when you were predicting rain five straight days, including friday, and now we're seeing some change in the models there. >> that's right, and the shift. we could also see it stall out or shift further south. >> so follow along. >> yeah. >> all right, lisa, thank you. we shared a photo of dozens of old wedding gowns on display

space. virgin galactic tested on friday with three people ab moses, a microgravity research expert. her job is to evaluate the trip and what passengers might go through. more than 600 people have bought tickets to go into space. youtube has pulled ads on antivaccination channels. the san bruno-based company says it has strict policies about which videos the ads are allowed to appear on. youtube says video promoting the antivaccination content violate the policies. buzzfeed news reports at least three channels have been impacted, half a dozen advertisers whose spots appeared in the videos apparently had no knowledge of it. an ebay sale nearly brought a couple to tears. they sold a vcr and got much more than money in returned. >> i watched tapes of my retirement party from 25 years ago, which i had never seen before. geez, were we young. >> matt and his girlfriend sold a vcr on ebay for 40 bucks. a few weeks later, they received a letter in the mail from the

buyer. he was able to play old tapes on the player and relive some heart-warming memories. >> we read it together and were both just on the verge of tears reading it. with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this hour with a look at the weather. tracking t conditions where you live. hi, lisa. >> chris, good morning to you. it is cloudy outside and we're looking at a dry day today for most of us. we could see a few sprinkles in the far north bay, but the main rain event is holding off until monday. it is 40 in napa, 45 in vallejo, 48 san francisco, with 43 in san jose. so, notice absent from the temperature panel are the 30s. so, we are certainly enjoying a boost this morning, anywhere from 14 degrees warmer in parts of the north bay. in the east bay about nine degrees milder. so, we are looking at the clouds to continue to stream in throughout the day today. by 2:00, we're in the mid-50s in concord, 57 mountain view, 52 san francisco. once again, perhaps a few sprinkles far north, but by the evening hours, we still remain dry for the bulk of the bay area into the overnight hours, but we're bringing in our storm impact scale four tomorrow. rain gets heavy into tuesday and wednesday. we're talking flooding and

excessive rain in the north bay. details in a few minutes. hollywood's golden night is almost here. the 91st annual oscars are being held at the dolby theatre tonight. and this year there will be some changes, including no host. abc news reporter danya bacchus is live in hollywood with the preview. you get all the cool assignments. >> reporter: yes, you know what, i love this assignment. every year i'm so glad that i'm able to be here live in hollywood at the dolby theatre. we're actually in the orchid four court. this is where the celebrities will make that final walk up the grand staircase before going inside of the theater. and once inside, many people are wondering how the show's going to go this year, because for the first time in three decades, it's hostless. the countdown is on and the anticipation growing. soon, celebrities will be gracing the red carpet and we'll finally know who will take home oscar gold. >> it's all real, darling. >> reporter: this year, the uncertainties aren't just around who will win awards.

>> i think the idea that nobody really knows what's going to happen once the show begins may actually now work as a kind of level of intrigue. >> reporter: for the first time since what was called a debacle in 1989, the oscars has no host. instead, opting for big performances, including all of the best original song nominees. ♪ ahh >> this is the academy awards. they know how to put on a good show. they have all the a-list celebrities. >> reporter: producers are pushing to keep the show shorter than usual, aiming for it to only be three hours long. >> and the oscar goes to -- >> reporter: since all 24 categories will be announced live oscar sunday, they say the 90-second rule will be in full effect. >> run that clock. >> your clock will begin at the moment that you hear epte winners will have just a minute and a half to get to the stageinhe acceptance . >> you see that podium, go for it. >> reporter: and when it comes to awards, categories like best actor and actress have multiple

from around the world to attend the four-day summit. the focus has been on transparency and dealing with clergy sexual abuse. bishop leaders gathered for a ceremony which included the open confession of sins and asking for forgiveness. they say they will do all they can to bring justice and healing to survivors. north korean leader kim jong-un is on his way to vietnam for his second summit with president trump. two key negotiators are accompanying him. it could take more than two days for the train to travel thousands of miles through china to vietnam. the meeting is scheduled for wednesday in hanoi. the two held their first summit last june in singapore. as former trump attorney michael cohen prepares to testify before congress this week, house intelligence committee chair adam schiff comes to "this week." former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe will also talk about his new book. you can watch the full interviews on "this week with george stephanopoulos" at 8:00 right here on abc7. an autopsy on the body of

san francisco public defender jeff adachi is expected either today or tomorrow. his death has surprised neighbors of the north beach residents where investigators were sent. several of them say they saw an ambulance and a fire truck around 6:30 friday night. san francisco police commissioner john hamasaki lives about a block away and says adachi didn't visit much in the area. >> i was sitting up in my house last night dealing with all the phone calls and texts and e-mails and had had no idea. i didn't know until my wife just told me. >> reporter: so you never saw him around here before? >> no. i've -- you know, that's funny, not in the neighborhood. >> reporter: adachi served in the san francisco public defender's office for 33 years. at the chinese new year parade in chinatown, fellow elected officials mourned the loss of their friend. adachi was supposed to be in yesterday's parade. >> you know, it's really sad that he's not here, but we're going to celebrate. he'd be right here smiling in

his car, you know, giving out hugs and love, and that's the kind of guy he was. and so we're going to be happy today and celebrate his spirit. >> jeff was all about community and he fought for the community, and it's, i think for everybody, it's a little melancholy. >> reporter: friends say adachi loved taking part in a good parade. mayor london breed will appoint adachi's replacement in the next few weeks. her appointment will serve until the november election when the office of public defender will be on the ballot. until then, matt gonzalez, adachi's second in command, is running the office. >> he had so much energy for the fight that we're in. and you know, so, we're going to -- it's a big loss for us. i mean, he's not replaceable in any fashion. >> gonzalez has been the chief attorney for the public defenders office since 2011. the abc7 news i-team got a hold of the police report detailing what happened to

happening today, thousands of people will fill the streets of oakland for the second annual black joy parade. grammy award-winning artist t. pain will perform. parade participants will get a chance to compete for a best in flow award. $10,000 will be divided among four winners who have the best choreography, outfit, ride, such as bikes or floats, and creativity. the parade starts at 12:30 at the corner of 14th and harrison in oakland. a davis man is two days into a run honoring a fallen police officer. ultra runner colin schmidt plans to cover 2,024 miles in 72 hours with just a 30-minute break every 12 hours to grab a shower, fresh clothes, and some food. sleep is not part of the plan. he was inspired after seeing billboards in memory of fallen officer natalie corona. she was gunned down while responding to a traffic accident in downtown davis. the billboards featured corona's badge, which gave schmidt an

this is emeryville. and you'll notice that it looks pretty quiet. we are going to see temperatures or feel them a little warmer today. the action starts tomorrow in the north bay, and we're going to see rain beginning and really staying in the far north bay for a good day before it makes its push to the south. and once it does, everyone on tuesday into wednesday looking at a very soggy afternoon and evening with flooding concerns, gusty winds, the saturated soil, and we also could see some problems, perhaps down in the santa cruz mountains. so, it's not only a north bay event by any means. it's just starting in the north bay, could stall in the north bay. and as we look at our roof camera, winds right now are light and we will continue to see a milder day today, even though with the cloud cover, obviously we're not going to be as warm, but still starting out warmer. the day will end up just a few degrees warmer. here's live doppler 7. you can see all the cloud cover. we're looking at a flash flood watch for marin and sonoma through thursday morning. the heavy rain monday night into

tuesday night, and the russian river and the napa river -- russian river at guerneville we're watching in particular. it's supposed to flood. and we are looking at the heavier rain pushing south out of the north bay overspreading the entire bay area tuesday into wednesday. so, look at these storm totals. it is a two on our storm impact scale. actually, it begins monday. the two will take us into wednesday, and we're looking at 5 to 9 inches in the hills and mountains of the north bay, 3 to 5 inches in the valleys of the north bay. the rest of the bay area 1 to 2. so, the rest of the day today featuring a lot of cloud cover and rain, perhaps well to the north. but as we get into your monday morning, it's a dry commute for everyone. but into the afternoon, the rain is falling in the north bay, still in the north bay into tuesday. for the most part, tuesday night it shifts south into wednesday. then we get a break on thursday and friday, but it looks like more rain is going to come back by the end of the week. so, here are the rainfall estimates, of course, focused in the north bay with 6 to 7 inches
