jong-un. after hosting a white house dinner for the nation's governors last night. kim is already on his way. he boarded an armored train to vietnam on saturday. terry moran at the white house with more. terry, since the first summit, no concrete progress on north korea getting rid of its nuclear weapons so the administration is lowering expectations a bit this time around. >> reporter: that's right, george, good morning. that is the central challenge for president trump. round two of this donald trump/kim jong-un bromance. and while they have apparently struck up a very warm relationship, president trump actually said they fell in love and he gushes over the letters he gets from kim jong-un. you're absolutely right, there have been no concrete steps, no actual denuclearization. oh, they've stopped testing but they've done that before. the goal here is a modest one, to get them to do something real to take away the threat of these weapons that they pose to the united states. that might mean dismantling a

investigators say they found an operation that relied on asian women being used as sex workers. >> our concern in this investigation centers around our possibility of victims of human trafficking. >> reporter: police also say that kraft was involved in two incidents of soliciting prostitution. the most recent one, allegedly taking place just weeks before the super bowl. >> the question was, does the video contain mr. kraft inside receiving the alleged acts? the answer to that is yes. >> reporter: but kraft's spokesperson maintains, we categorically deny that mr. kraft engaged in any illegal activity. the nfl says they're aware of the ongoing law enforcement matter and they will continue to monitor developments. as for kraft, he could see jail time. these charges carry a maximum of 60 days. but he's most likely looking at a $500 fine. >> all right, paula, thank you. there's netwt in tjussie smolle.

that's coming up. the latest on the jussie smollett case. >> he's maintaining his innocence this morning. the alleged hate crime in chicago. the superintendent of the chicago police department, eddie johnson, is going to join us in just a moment. first, eva pilgrim is in chicago with the latest. good morning, eva. >> reporter: robin, yjussie smollett is out on bond this morning. for the first time, we're getting a look at a key piece of evidence. this morning, jussie smollett digging in, denying he staged a racist and homophobic attack. >> don't act like you know me. >> reporter: his tv dad coming to his defense, as the show they worked on pulled smollett from last two episodes from the season. terrence howard saying, the jussie i know could never conceive of something so ugly.

his innocence or judgment is not anything for us to decide. stay in your lane. smollett, charged with filing a false police report. now the center of a media frenzy. detailing the attack in this interview with abc news. >> he said, this maga country, [ bleep ], punches me right in the face, so i punched his [ bleep ] right back. >> reporter: but police now saying he made the whole thing up, that smollett came up with a plan he planned for weeks. >> when that didn't work, he paid $3500 to stage this attack and drag chicago's reputation through the mud in the process. >> reporter: but overnight, abc news obtaining a copy of a $3500 check appearing to have been written by smollett. on the memo line, five-week nutrition workout plan. sources close to smollett say abel osundairo was training the actor for an upcoming music video.

smollett's representatives saying he's innocent. adding that smollett feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing. now, smollett is due back in court in march. robin? >> all right, eva, thank you. the superintendent of the chicago police department, eddie johnson, joins us live now. thank you for joining us. initially, all accounts fr poliwere treating jusmlett as e. when did it turn from being a possible hate crime to a possible hoax? >> so, let me just put this out still has the presumption of innocence until he has his day in court. so, what happened, at the very

beginning when he explained and gave his version of events, we treated it like a hate crime. one of the things i think is important to recognize is although the two attackers, who were masked, he was able to say he could see around their eyes that they were white-skinned. at least one guy was a white-skinned person. that's how we approached it. the entire time we investigated, he was treated like a victim. as you know, we picked up the two individuals after we identified who they were, we were waiting for them at o'hare airport. when they came back from overseas. we were legally able to hold them for 48 hours. the 47th hour we had those two individuals in custody, things changed. >> what changed in those 48 hours? >> we had gathered up evidence and facts. what changed was they then became cooperating witnesses.

>> was there a reason they decided to do that in the 47th hour? >> we worked closely with their lawyer, and their lawyer talked to them. whatever she said to them got through to them to just tell the truth about what happened, and that's what they decided to do. >> even though you all were saying early on there was no reason not to believe his story, there were a lot of red flags. that a lot of people saw. you all had questions. even though you were not, of course, going to be public about that. >> right. there were questions. there's always question when people are describing incidents to us. so, but we have to maintain the integrity of the investigation. that's what we did. we didn't have the facts to support him being involved until that 47th hour. it's important for people to recognize it's not the chicago police saying he did something. it's the evidence. the facts. and the witnesses that are saying this. so, our job is to investigate it and bring facts and the evidence to the state. >> the brothers have stated that.

>> correct. >> the check that we saw in eva pilgrim's report, the $3500. did the brothers specifically say that was for the attack? >> they said he paid them $3500 with a check -- >> did they say what it was for? >> to carry out this incident. >> your press conference, sir, was so passionate. it seemed quite personal. the words you talked about being angry and offended, and you often referred to the noose. that was a real breaking point for you. >> you know, robin, i grew up in the tail end of the civil rights era. i lived in cabrini green as a kid. it could be categorized as one of the most notorious housing area in chicago. the city of chicago has this issue. the police department has issues with racism. excessive force.

i'm acutely aware of that. but we didn't earn this particular incident. and i just refused to let us have to take that shot if i'm -- if i have evidence to the contrary. so, i just want people to understand that's a damaging thing to do to a city. and, to a police department. you know, so, it's my responsibility to ensure that -- the record gets set straight. >> you were up front about the issues within the chicago police department. when it comes to race relations. and the mistrust from some in the public. how do you address that going forward? >> so, you know, something like this can be really damaging. we made a lot of progress in the last three years since i have been superintendent in terms of race relations. are we where we want to be? of course not. but we're heading in the right direction. but i just hope people don't judge other folks that are victims of these types of crime.

this is just one particular incident. you damage a city's reputation. we don't need help with that. we really don't. first and foremost there are real victims of crimes of that nature. hate crimes. and i just hope that people don't treat them with skepticism. you know, this is one particular incident, and it has to stand on its own merits. >> it's an ongoing investigation? >> correct. >> so, where does it stand as of this morning? >> right now, as i said, he has the presumption of innocence. he'll get his opportunity in court if he chooses to go that route. again, i was very acutel aware of the situation in terms of the chicago police department declaring he was a suspect. there's a lot more evidence that hasn't been presented yet that does not support the version that he gave us. >> there's more, because you presented quite a bit. and legal experts say that's the most they have seen being presented up front. >> but there's still a lot of physical evidence. video evidence. and testimony that just simply

[ cheers and applause ] >> she has really upped her fashion game all awards season. that oscar de la renta dress was so clean and so crisp. i know she had started working with designers months ahead and the one criteria she had was she wanted to look back at this night, her first oscar nomination, and not be dated. she wanted a dress that would be classic 20 years later. >> good move. >> great look. >> she won for "if beale street could talk." it's james baldwin's adaptation and she said she wanted to wear a classic american designer, oscar de la renta. >> bevy, who else do you think crushed it on the red carpet? >> powerful in pink, miss gemma chan. this valentino look is not something you traditionally see on the red carpet because it is covered up. we don't see a slit. we don't see a plunging

neckline. we see a high, gorgeous ruffle but it's a sophisticated look. i love that it's cherry blossom pink. it has a parachute effect. we first saw this coming down the runway. we saw tracee ellis ross do her own version of it. it's really kind of swept the runway. i just love this. it's so new, fresh, innovative. doesn't look like anyone else. >> pink was a big color. cindi, my girl, how about glenn close? >> i loved glenn close. and you know why? i thought she dressed like the 71-year-old superhero she is. she's wearing that great gold dress with a cape no less. there were rules of if you were a woman of a certain age, you had to dress in a boringly respectable mother of the bride way. i think she was like, uh-uh. i have seven oscar nominations and i'm coming for that red carpet. by the way, that dress, which is a carolina herrera dress, weighs 42 pounds. it's 4 million beads.

i'm exhausted thinking about that. >> a workout just to get down the red carpet. we're goi about nde saw a lot of pink on the red carpet. >> pink was the color of the night. who ended it better than the whole evening than julia roberts in that elie saab dress. so beautiful, such a surprise. we saw all shades. from a pale pink on kacey musgraves to helen mirren. we're looking at women from their 30s to their 70s. this trend is just as applicable to them all. >> yes. >> you know what else i really loved about it, joe. pink is usually sort of frilly and feminine and delicate but you know in the early 1900s pink was a color for boys. >> oh. >> and this oscars showed us pink can be very powerful and sexy and bold, as well. >> a history lesson over here. >> we loved hearing what billy porter said about what he was wearing. he was spot on with what he

said about that. >> another trend. gender-bending fashion. i loved that of course. he looked gorgeous in this christian siriano tuxedo/gown moment. look at that bodice. look at that nipped waist, darling. the best thing about billy, he's been doing this, pushing the envelope the entire awards season. he wants to make us question what is feminine? what is masculine? and then of course lots of women made us question that as well. let's look at -- who do we have up? elsie fisher. a tom brown three-piece suit. she had a fun bag to give it that edge. then melissa mccarthy, she had a brandon maxwell. i love it. business on the bottom. the extravaganza on the top. >> and then the cape. >> and the cape. diane warren. she's a rock 'n' roll chick. she had to do that white suit, lots of edgy, lots of sparky and lots of fun.

frivolity going on with the accessories. who is that other one? >> chadwick. >> oh, chadwick boseman. let's have a moment and talk about the fact that chadwick boseman wore a sequinned tuxedo jacket but with a train. those are normally reserved for women but he did it. >> you have to say pantsuits on women have been a big trend this entire awards season. the fact that billy porter showed up in that tuxedo gown and looked so great, that's groundbreaking. >> it's a first. this is groundbreaking. >> what about y'all? >> you don't really need us at all. you said it was an adventurous red carpet. people had fun with accessories. >> totally. first of all, i do think it was adventurous in general. it was sort of the death of fear. celebrities were worried about wearing the wrong thing. now we're seeing confidence

which is really refreshing. diane warren was nominated for writing the song from "rbg." she had a little ruth bader ginsburg action figure poking out of her pocket. awkwafina continued to steal the hearts and minds of people by carrying a tequila flask as a purse and actually drinking out of it on the red carpet which is the thing to do on a nerve racking red carpet. and spike lee did a full-on tribute. you don't see a huge necklace on a man and i thought that was amazing. >> and gold jordans that michael jordan commissioned for him. >> and he had his tailor make the pants high waters. so you could see those shoes. >> i haven't heard the phrase high waters in a long time. we called them ankle whippers. yeah, yeah, the angles. how about lady gaga?

>> oh, my gosh. [ cheers and applause ] i already -- somebody reamed me on twitter for talking about her too much. she's been a fashion force this entire season. i have to say, i think there are two classes of dressing for the oscars. the type that go over the top. it's the climax of the season. and then you have the classic dresser. you thought she would show up and be really crazy. in the end, she toned it down. it's a very chic and fashionable dress by alexander mcqueen. still very subdued for gaga. >> she toned it down. but that tiffany necklace. whoo! couldn't take my eyes off that. oh, my. >> 128 karats. >> 128 karats. >> no big deal. and there were 62 other diamonds on that necklace as well. >> worn by audrey hepburn. >> you are our powerhouses. >> you are. you're our gagas. 5,000 karats right here. thank you three for being here.
