heavy rain continuing into the overnight hours and into the commute tomorrow morning. more details coming up but over to dan and jessica. spencer, thank you. new in the jeff adachi death investigation, the attorney now heading the san francisco public defender's office has serious concerns about how the investigation is being handled. dan noyes has a report you'll see only on 7. >> jessica and dan, he's been the chief attorney in the public defender's office for eight years. he does not like how they searched the scene of adachi's death and who is leading the investigation. >> grief counselors met with employees at the public defender's office today as a memorial to jeff adachi. they're investigating and say there are no signs of foul play. but matt gonzalez is concerned about the investigation into adachi's death. >> you know, i've handled a lot of cases over the years. this is not normal. >> the police report obtained by

the i-team shows the medical director of operations led the investigation friday night questioning witnesses at the scene. but just three weeks before, jeff adachi tried to get him fired for lying in a homicide case about his accreditation with the medical examiner's office. >> they've lost the accreditation with that national organization at least a year earlier, perhaps two years earlier. mr. warwick knew that. >> does he hold a grudge that could affect the investigation should he have recused himself? >> there's insinuations that someone could have had access to the scene and could have changed things. well, maybe mr. he had access to the scene previously. maybe that wasn't the first time he was there that night. >> i called and e-mailed and went to the medical examiner' office and christopher ware wick would only say he's too busy to

talk. gonzalez is concerned that after police took these pictures friday night, they wanted to come back saturday and take more. the building owner refused so police got a search warrant and on sunday broke down the door. >> it feels like, really, like everything we can tell a medical emergency that resulted in death. and there's no evidence that this is a crime scene of some kind. >> gonzalez believes it's clear that his close friend and colleague died of natural causes, some sort of heart attack. late last night i spoke with the realtor and friend of adachi's who gave them the keys to that apartment. she took the call from adachi's friend frantic that he had fallen ill. >> i said what's wrong with him. he said he had stomach pains and heartburn and he said that he's not doing well now. can you please hurry and come here? >> police sources tell me they've been able to speak with a woman with adachi that night. know her only as katerina.

it was always a different case every morning. i said jeff, i'm here to work out. we would laugh. >> gascon spoke all announcing that more than 8,000 marijuana-related convictions were erased or reduced making san francisco the first city in the country to clear all eligible pot convictions. it's a move that gascon said adachi supported. the teachers strike in oakland will enter a fourth day with no end in sight. >> we're taking it to east oakland on a march to demonstrate what the district would be doing for the students if they were forced to go to alliance. >> state superintendent tony thurmond joined the talks in an effort to find some kind of common ground here. the union says negotiations will resume tomorrow morning. abc 7 news reporter lyanne me lenithere stante omheeaer rallied

in front of oakland city hall. from there, they marched, demanding a better contract. negotiations resumed this morning after they broke off yesterday without any kind of meaningful discussion. joining them today was state superintendent of public instruction, tony thurmond. >> this is a positive in many ways. one way it would help us get to an agreement. that's paramount right there. >> hopefully, with the third party in there, there will be more coming to senses of the district who was just saying no. >> the school district's latest offer is an 8.5% compensation package over four years. teachers are staying firm, demanding 12% over three years. >> 20% of the teachers are leaving every year. in addition to that, theil a nu are having to live far from here and commute here and live with roommates and have second jobs. >> robert reich, former

>> barely 24 hours after her brother-in-law john moore was shot and killed behind his danville office, patty rah net i told us he's a man with no enemies. a family man and friend to all. >> he really had no enemies. like i said, he was loved by so many people and it's not just devastating to us, it's devastating to all of his friends and even people that didn't know him. >> the 76-year-old moore was shot multiple times behind the office building he owned sunday afternoon. this is a photo of the suspect. 51-year-old mark sypien. the man police are looking for in connection with moore's death. he was seen driving a ford escape with illinois license plates, 1008122. anyone who sees sippen is asked to contact police immediately. >> right now, we don't believe anyone else is in danger. danville police chief allen

shields told us he knew more personally. >> we've known john for several years. he's a great person he goes back many years in the community and has lots of friends in the community. >> john moore was retired but he kept an office here at the building he owned of the he was actually working in the back on a new rv getting ready for a family vacation when he was shot. >> police confirm they are looking at surveillance video from the cameras around where moore was working on the rv. he leaves behind his wife nancy and three grown children. >> he is going to be really missed by so many people and we just loved him so much. >> in danville, laura anthony, abc 7 news. new at 6:00, police in san mateo have arrested a man for a fatal house fire that investigators call a gang-related arson. 26-year-old fifita tau is being held without bail. he was arrested friday night at a home in palo alto.

they say he's responsible for a fire that killed a grandmother, 85-year-old found unresponsive by firefighters when they pulled her out of her humboldt street home. firefighters performed cpr but to no avail, they could not revive her. other people inside the home did escape safely. police determined that the fire is, in fact, a case of arson. investigators accused tau of setting the home ablaze in a gang-related attack. a landslide killed a woman and her body still not found. sky 7 was overhead as dozens of firefighters frantically shoveled sand with shovels and also by hand hoping to find her. search dogs were unable to locate a scent. pena was on the scene when it happened and stayed with the story to bring you the latest information. >> it's had a history of erosion and according to geologist was a matter of time. >> we've measured rates of erosion there that are two to

four times the average of cliff erosion throughout the state. so it's one of those places that naturally is eroding faster than the rest of california. >> on friday, for more than three hours, over 60 firefighters and bystanders frantically shoveled and searched for the woman buried under the landslide. three days later, she still hasn't been found. >> be nice if they put fences or gates up. i know how dogs are. they like to roam around and venture off. >> they put out a statement. the recovery team will assess the conditions of the beach in the bluff search area when current storms pass and hopes to utilize long boom -- it's closed off to the public as the board of supervisors president norman yee represents his district and said he'll be contacting federal authorities about cliffside safety. >> to clearly mark the pathway

now to storm watch and a look at live doppler 7 as a level 3 storm moves through our bay area. >> we have team coverage on the weather tonight. let's hear from meteorologist drew tuma >> dan and skbres kjessica, we' dealing with this for the next 36 hours. the ground is saturated so flooding is a high concern through tuesday and early into wednesday morning. it's for that fact, we have a flash flood watch in effect for much of the bay area, including san francisco, oakland all the way south into san jose. we expect several inches of rainfall over the next 36 hours.

so flooding is possible on our area roadways and also we could see and very likely will see a rapid rise in our small streams and also our small creeks. in the north bay, though, we have a bigger concern with a flood watch. what we'll be watching very closely are the river levels. especially the napa and the russian river. we're expecting heavy rainfall, not only tonight but also tomorrow. we'll keep our eye on that. we've got rain and wind to deal with through wednesday morning. wind gusts could top at least 50 miles per hour at times. spencer christian has been keeping an eye on live doppler 7. he has more. >> when you look at live doppler 7, j we have the watches and advisories up, because rain is pouring all over the bay area. it's been pouring all day in the north bay and the last few hours, the rain and intensity has shifted southward through the golden gate across san francisco to parts of the east bay and of course, it's going to expand even further during the late-night hours. here's a view from the rooftop

camera. current temperature readings in the mid-50s in san francisco, oakland. san jose, morgan hill and half moon bay. we have a uniform range of temperatures. the view from emeryville, there has been rain there as well. temperatures range from low to mid-50s at santa rosa, napa, petaluma, fairfield, concord and livermore. you can see the pavement is wet on the golden gate. there's more rain on the way. these are the forecast features. periods of heavy rain and gusty winds through tomorrow. a calmer pattern will settle in by friday. only for one day because another wet pattern develops over the weekend. our current storm for most of the bay area ranks 3 on the storm impact scale. a strong storm through tomorrow. bear in mind, we could expect periods of moderate to heavy rain. localized flooding is likely. there's a possibility of wind gusts ranging to 50 miles per hour. here's the forecast animation. notice how concentrated the heaviest will be. a lot of people will be moving

over to the east bay as well. during the overnight hours, we'll see further expansion of that storm system with the rain finally beginning to push down to the peninsula and into parts of the south bay. but even into the early morning hours and overnight into the beginning of the morning commute, although there will be wet pavement, this will be mainly a north bay focused storm with more heavy rain likely to hit other parts of the bay area in the middle of the day. by 9:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see a surge of heavy downpours. drenching, perhaps flooding downpours moving through the central part of the bay area. beginning to push to the east bay. overnight lows generally in the low 50s. not a wide range of temperatures and the stormiest weather will remain in the north bay overnight. let's isolate the north bay for a second. it's getting the heaviest impact of the storm. the storm ranks 4 for the north bay. that means a major storm. the north bay can expect continuing rain, powerful gusts and the high risk of flooding. speaking of the north bay, we're

going to isolate to give you forecast for tomorrow. the heaviest rain in the entire bay area will be in the north bay. the highest risk for flooding in the north bay. landslides are possible with the ground saturated and the rainfall continuing for at least another 24 hours. we project the rainfall totals by the early morning hours wednesday. we'll range from 3 to 6 inches in parts of the north bay. 1 to 2 inches over most of the remainder of the bay area. generally in the upper 50s to 60 degrees. it will be windy in spots and over in the sierra, of course, we have a snowstorm. we have a winter storm warning in effect i should say until 6:00 a.m. thursday. above 4500 feet. look for 3 to 5 feet from the storm in the central sierra. up to ten feet of snow in the peaks and likely with white-out conditions. driving conditions will be hazardous. the accuweather seven-day forecast, level 3 storm for the north bay. on wednesday, the storm loses a

this is abc 7 news. a multinational pharmaceutical company is now did evident in a federal case. one of the first to testify in the high stakes trial is a man from the north bay. a major federal trial began today involving chemicals and cancer. a man from sonoma county was the first of thousands to take the stand in a lawsuit against the manufacturer of roundup weed killer. >> as abc 7 news reporter

melanie woodrow explains, he claims the product gave him cancer. >> sonoma county man, was diagnosed with nonhodgkin's lymphoma at 66 years old according to his attorney who argues he developed cancer as a result of spraying roundup weed killer on his 56 acres of land. it contains glyphosate. the attorney for monsanto argues glyphosate does not cause cancer. the attorney said hardeman has risk factors that increased his chances. including hepatitis a and c and including his age and body weight index. >> we don't believe those are risk factors. in other words, they didn't cause his nonhodgkin's lymphoma. >> in a statement, bayer writes, we have great sympathy for mr. hardem hardeman, the extensive body of

scientific research shows it's not responsible for his illness. >> as long as the company continues to deny that roundup causes nonhodgkin's lymphoma, nothing can be done. >> last year duane lee johnson won a $289 million verdict against bayer. the judge later reduced the award to $78 million. bayer is appealing the verdict. the jury trial under way here in federal court is expected to last a month. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. well, this is something that might make you put town a glass of wine or beer. one of the ingredients in roundup has been found in several brands. glyphosate turned up in 19 of the 20 brands tested by the u.s. public interest research group. weed killer showed up in some organic beverages. how the report says all the levels were below the environmental protection agency's risk. told you three years ago to see if your favorite wine or beer

phone and to redirect your calls and texts to the new phone. they convince by conning a service rep. offering bribes or having an inside accomplice. >> it's a major epidemic. >> aaron west is one of the country's foremost experts on sim swap crimes. a santa clara county deputy district attorney, she's currently prosecuting sim swaps tied to five different teams operating in the u.s. >> i deal with scams every day. i've never heard of this. >> no. it's a new one. back in march 2018. victim called the sheriff's office in santa clara county. >> it has been a wild ride ever crime team found it's not just the crime that's new and unique. so are the defendants. >> they are often very young, have had no jobs before. and all of a sudden a millionaires. they spend it at clubs and on

for tech companies expanding here? apparently not. a new survey of 100 ceos indicates over half of them plan to keep adding jobs over the next five years. >> it's not that growth happens in silicon valley. there are markets in other parts of the country and supplyth a l. growth in austin, growth in nashville, growth from salt lake city can be complimentary to what we do here. the study in the silicon valley foundation implies there's no quick fix for gridlock and affordable housing if more jobs are created. people are moving away because of the headaches at the rate of 165 people per month. that's four times higher than the year before. >> people are sitting in their cars longer and longer. people are paying more for housing. so it's a question of sort of in some cases relative pain. the people are eager for solutions. if you are able to come with a coherent plan, tell folks how their money will be spent, people are willing to say yes.
