and dreware tracking. begin with jobina. >> reporter: more than 20 areas under mandatory evacuation, and resources are available. standing in sonoma county animal services mobile van right now, taking care of pets. cats at top, dogs in the several evacuees, hearing the stories is incredible. trying to get to department where flood evacuees were shuttled to shelters but ran into it ourselves. >> nothing like this. look at mailbox. >> traveled down to farm, horse boarded inside. >> figured couldn't drive in driveway, no idea would be up to the barn. >> reporter: images startling but evacuees from other areas.

running another evacuation center at sonoma county fairgrounds. ac7 news. >> thanks so much. one of the towns hit hard is monte rio. historic buildings like the movie theater now partially under water. believe it or not, it's happened before to that theater. monte rio is cut off, all roads in or out closed. but monty freeman got a ride with emergency crews, talked to people who didn't heed evacuation orders and stayed put. >> you can see where the water is now, another three feet will flood quite a few more houses. >> already there. >> probably not as bad as they look, right? >> or could be worse. >> many people only able to get around by boat. in fact we went for a ride with one man. >> in '86 i was four, river came

up and it was about this high, maybe a little bit higher. >> what is this normally? >> broad river boulevard going south. behind you is highland del, water is probably how deep? deep, eight or nine feet maybe. >> deeper than the length of the paddle and just going around seeing if people need help. >> definitely river boulevard. spencer and drew. what we expect next couple of hours. >> as you pointed out earlier, russian river is still rising. unbelievable as this may sound, flooding is going to get worse in evening hours. look at various levels of flooding. right now major flooding as you have seen, not expected to crest until 9:00 this evening, nearly 46 feet, 14 feet above flood stage.

major flooding will continue overnight into tomorrow morning, perhaps until about noon, then moderate flooding into afternoon hours as river finally begins to recede and minor flooding into tomorrow night. flood warning on the russian river until 3:06 p.m. saturday. live doppler 7, you can see rain has ended in north bay but for sprinkle. light rain over parts of the east bay and inland east bay. still ranks one, light intensity, scattered showers into late night, under 0.2 inches of rain expected. drew tuma with the totals. >> when you look at numbers, you can see why the north bay is having so many issues right now. santa rosa received more than six inches of rainfall. yesterday set all-time record for 24 hour rainfall in santa

rosa. venn atto closing in on two feet of rain. that's why seeing so many issues, hit so hard. rainbow of rainfall on the map. south bay, sharp drop-off, lot of spots saw less than inch of moisture. wide range with the river event. flood warning still in effect and napa river under flood warning and do anticipate good news next couple of hours, looks like will go below flood stage through 9:00 tonight, expect it to recede back into its banks. when spencer christian comes back, there is more rainfall in the forecast, show you full forecast in a few minutes. >> that's last thing anybody needs, especially up north. joining us sergeant with the

sonoma county sheriffs office. yesterday you said mandatory evacuation orders, need people out of the area, obvious why. update? >> mandatory evacuations last night, 20 deputies knocking on doors, telling people who need to leave. those who didn't heed the warning had to get rescued today. us and fire department rescued about 40 people from homes and rooftops, needed to get to higher ground. that's what we spent the day doing today. area's cut off from the rest of sonoma county, on island out there and we're working to get people to higher ground. >> you joined us midday and mentioned weren't getting a lot of emergency assistance calls. has that situation changed as

water continues to rise? >> i would say still not high pace volume from dispatchers. what i'm hearing. but talking to deputies and fire department, checked in at command post, about 40 individuals rescued. not always dispatch but someone yelling for help and able to get to them. >> you mentioned water was getting almost too high for the high water rescue vehicles. are they still able to operate or rescue by boat at this point? >> has been too high all day long, haven't operated. water is too high for that, all rescues done by boat. >> expectation for the next 24 hours, sergeant? >> thinking 7:00 to 10:00 crest

gushing water. can still see residual flooding in the field next to the highway. just within the last hour cal trans and chp reopened the eastbound lanes. westbound is still closed. this is how highway 37 looked today. between atherton avenue and 101 in novato, closed both directions east and west, flooded. this truck loaded with lumber didn't quite make it through. started couple of weeks leavee cracked and sent water over the highway. cal trans repaired the breach. this time happened not far from the former break. >> with the last storm that came

through, sheer amount of water has caused a lot more flooding. >> reporter: novato creek runs underneath, overflowed banks and flooded. >> all the morning commute coming from east to west for us, all detoured down atherton. >> reporter: bumper-to-bumper commuting, two lane road, nightmare for commuters until this highway reopens. elsewhere, typical wet weather day. >> small mud slides, debris and flooding calls. normal wet weather calls. >> reporter: san antonio road not far from highway 101 had flooded but by this afternoon the waters had receded. still the water level in nearby rivers and creeks were dangeroue will y ly high. >> reporter: eastbound now open,

want to see happen. >> reporter: teachers' position is it's highly inappropriate to have school board meeting to talk about millions of dollars in cuts while these folks are still on the picket lines and negotiations still under way. i'm told they started at 12:00 today, went to 3:00 this morning, then took a break and back at it. at this point not hearing of any progress made. live in oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> this strike is proving to be costly for oakland unified school district, according to spokesperson, 6% of students have shown up, equates to million dollars a day in lost revenue to the state. man wanted in connection with danville's first murder in three years has shot himself. mark sypien

of john moore. tonight sheriff deputies found him, when he saw the deputies, shot himself in the head. taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. san francisco city officials will hold candlelight memorial for late jeff adachi who passed away on friday. autopsy was performed sunday but cause of death not released yet. police say no signs of foul play, 11:00, city hall. attention to the weather, river still rising and more rain coming. >> not in north bay, happy to say, but light to moderate in other parts of the bay area. storm is winding down, good news, but impact has been

major flooding has been the case throughout most of the day. river expected to crest at 9:00 p.m., 45.6 feet, 14 feet above flood stage. major flooding through tomorrow morning. then waters recede tomorrow afternoon, flooding downgraded to moderate, still severe, and minor by late tomorrow night. storm impact scale, winding down but still a one. scattered showers mainly in peninsula, south and east bay, light to moderate rainfall, most locations less than 0.2 inches additional from this storm. widely scattered showers, sprinkle maybe in the north bay but no more steady or concentrated rain expected. snow pushing into the sierra. overnight temperatures mid to

rising. >> incredibly flooded. nuts. >> reporter: could only get 7 1/2 miles from guerneville. river road was submerged hour later and so was the road we parked for first live report, then had to move. cars parked here started to disappear. zach was hoping to get to work but realized by 7:00 a.m. had missed chance. >> down here 6:00, probably 1 1/2 feet lower. maybe if i would have tried then, could have got through. >> reporter: authorities pushed back barricade another mile. here's why. water we drove through as we headed further from guerneville. but forestville residents were surprised. cindy was told couldn't go back to her home. >> left 7:00 this morning and it was fine, then heard the river

was cresting, thought i better get home. obviously too late. >> reporter: heard guerneville but expecting forestville to be this impacted? >> not at all. >> driveway at inn flooded this morning. one tried to leave, didn't make it. >> decision to take rental car through waist high water, 2/3 of the way and car stalled. encourage anyone watching, do not try to go through any water over a foot high, you never know. >> reporter: employees carried suitcases through the water as guests walked up and around the property to get out. people allowed in with the national guard or firefighters with boats and jetskis or a county worker with sandbags who could only make it so far. >> never seen the river this high. >> river remains high.

>> reporter: yes, indeed. river that carries water all the way to santa cruz by the boardwalk, area around here got as much as four inches today, not as much as other parts of the bay area but monitored closely to foretell flooding downriver. the san lorenzo has a history of rising several feet in an hour with heavy rainfall, dramatic in boulder creek but not causing alarm. still several feet below flood stage. residents are glad they didn't get hammered as often happens. >> were prepared for more rainfall. thankful it's not as bad but hope those up north are staying safe. we know how it can be. >> reporter: constant concern is highway 17, rain makes slippery, can trigger rock and slides, can

supervise well enough, because some dogs don't play well with others, need to separate the problem dogs out. beyond that, not every kennel rated well. some rated poorly based on the feedback from the pet owners. it does make sense to make sure you check places out in advance, rely on our ratings if nothing else, make sure you can inspect the places to see they're clean and dogs there seem well cared for and people there seem to care about the animals. >> assume they'll let you inspect, in the day could tell you no. >> some places, say it agitates the dogs, stranger walking through, but may be true but for sake of transparency, worth a little disruption. and shop for price, there are big differences. asked for prices for different

dogs and stays. one week, some charge hundreds more than others for same dog and experience. you don't need to -- most people say willing to pay more to put loved dog in great place but don't need to pay a lot more for great care. high priced kennels, some were lousy, some great. some of the low priced kennels, same way. doesn't mean that high price didn't mean better care. >> more than one pet? >> check out pet sitter so dogs can stay in your home. in general charge twice as much as kennels charge but kennels charge per animal, pet sitters per visit. three or more probably come out same or ahead someone coming in to take care of your dogs as opposed to shipping them off. >> great advice. kevin and bay area checklist has put together a report.
