first fire, now flooding. how one man's bad luck is being met with good intention. >> i'm kate larson here at 4-h in san bruno. how lessons on the farm helped these sisters survive a weekend in the woods. >> it's become a game of beat the clock ahead of a new approaching storm. i'm cornell barnard. abc7 news starts now. >> announcer: now from abc7 news, live breaking news. >> that breaking news is in sacramento where police have arrested 30 protesters following a march demanding officers be charged in the death of stephon caloric. a th >> they refused to clear folsom boulevard. five cars were keyed. marchers protested the decision not to chashlg two officers for kill clark last year.

saturday the district attorney said the officers were justified in shooting clark because they thought he had a gun. president item turned out to be a cell phone a. he you can get break being news updates instantly sent to your mobile device by downloading the abc7 news app and enabling push alerts. >> in the north bay, it's a race against the clock tonight for flood survivors who are trying to clean up tons of flood debris before a new storm hits. >> abc7 news reporter cornell barnard live in guerneville. cornell? >> reporter: definitely a sense of urgency. debris is piling up stretching for miles down river road. folks are doing their best to get rid of it before another storm arrives. anything and everything that got wet in the flood is being tossed out at this debris drop-off-site in forestville. it's been busy and there's no time to waste. you're trying to beat the rain? >> we are. i don't want to do this in the rain, you know?

i think a lot of us feel that way. >> reporter: he is tossing out insulation and sheetrock. flood water was 8 feet deep at his house. >> it's a mess. >> reporter: mary rose has help cleaning up the ground of her resort before more rain makes things worse. >> it's very sobering when you -- when every single square inch is covered with mud. >> more water couldn't hurt us right now. we've already been hit. >> reporter: sonoma county officials say a new atmospheric river should miss them, but no one's taking any chances. >> our emergency operation center is still staffed. we've got road crew still on the rhoda. lots of deputies, and we're ready to face any challenges that come. >> reporter: with so much flood debris piling up in the streets, neighbors have concerns about the unhealthy contaminants it may be covered with. >> it's getting pilkd up. people are breathing it in. it's not great for the lungs. >> reporter: county health officials say people should use caution when working with flood

debris. use eye protection and, of course, use gloves. debris drop off sites are going to be available for the next several weeks along the russian river in several communities. it is free of charge. we're live in guerneville. cornell barnard, abc7 news a. >> cornell, thank you. fiers flyer, now flooding. a man in the north bay has experienced a series of bad luck. amanda del castillo has his story. >> reporter: father and forestville resident scott simpson is one of thousands flooded out of sonoma county. his heavily damaged home sits about a mile from the russian river. >> the structure is still standing in the new house, and the walls are good. but yeah, the whole inside of it is going to need to be gutted. >> reporter: simpson's new home a year and a half after his last one burned to the ground. >> my house was one of the homes that was in coffey park. >> reporter: back when the tubbs fire took out parts of napa, sonoma and lake counties,

simpson was renting. on february 4, they moved into their newly renovated forestville home on sunday, 24th. the russian river reached flood stage that tuesday night. >> so two days in the home, basically every, everything was destroyed. >> reporter: his bad luck is being met with good intention. friends from simpson's rock climbing community are coming together to be a rock for him and his 7-year-old daughter. this gofundme campaign meant to help them after the second disaster. >> if you see the whole community, it's affecting the whole community. schools, public transportation, everything is damaged. simpson admits it's been tough. >> i see a lot of crying, i see a lot of sadness out there. you know, people are hurting. >> reporter: but simpson also says the support is something else. you can find a link to that campaign on abc7news.com. just click on the story. i'm amanda del castillo, abc7

news. >> here are the first signs of the storm on live doppler 7. you can see some moisture off the coast getting picked up by our radar. this storm, as you take a look at the wider picture here, is not aimed towards the north bay so they should get a break. we're not expecting river flooding. the atmospheric river is aimed towards central and southern california. that's where the moisture is going to go. moderate showers in pockets, and it will be breezy at times. this storm will become elevated as we head towards wednesday to a level 2. tomorrow morning you're fine. by 7:00, 8:00 in the morning we are seeing light to moderate showers. that trend continues 10:00 a.m. >> thank you, sandhya. you can always check where you live on the abc7 news app. you can updates sent directly to your mobile device. former beverley hills 90210

luke perry died today from the massive stroke he suffered last week. the publicist said family and friends were with him when he died, including his two children. abc7 news reporter danya backus has a look at his life and the tributes to him. >> i guess i'll see you around. >> i guess. >> reporter: actor lou perry. >> i think we should see other people. >> reporter: dylan from beverley hills 90210 died monday morning in los angeles. the 52-year-old passed away after suffering a massive stroke last week. he had been hospitalized since wednesday after paramedics were called to his sherman oaks home. his publicist said he was surrounded by his two children, fiance and other close family and friends. perry also making his mark on the big screen starring in movies like "buffy

london gave 9 man bone marrow stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists hiv infection. after three years of undergoing the treatment, tests showed no trace of an hiv infection. an american who underwent a similar treatment back in 2007 is still hiv-free. that case will be reported at a medical conference tomorrow in seattle. >> san francisco giant ceo larry bear is taking an immediate leave of absence after an altercation with his wife that was caught on camera. the video obtained by tmz shows bayer reaching across his wife pam trying to grab a cell phone at a park in san francisco last week. pam bayer fell to the ground as her husband appears to wrestle the phone from her hand. a statement on behalf of the giants ownership group, he will take time away beginning today. also, quote, mr. bayer acknowledged his behavior was unacceptable, and is committed to taking steps to make sure

only on 7 tonight, we're hearing from the 4-h instructor who taught two young girls ages 5 and l the life-saving skills they needed to survive a weekend lost in the woods. the sisters live in humboldt county, that's near richardson grove state park. there is an area known for its

majestic red woods as well as bears and mountain lions. abc7 news reporter kate larson tells us they were prepared for the ordeal. >> i knew we needed to find shelter fast. >> reporter: she kicked into ino survival mode. they survived 48 hours with no food or water in cold and rainy conditions in the redwood forest. >> we found shelter, a tree branch close to the ground and we had my sister's rain jacket to keep us warm. >> reporter: she said she's not sure her daughters would have survived if not for their program. >> justin taught them fire making skills. >> they stayed calm. >> reporter: he teaches leah and caroline in their 4-h. he's glad the girls applied the

lessons during their misadventure like drinking water from leaves to stay hydrated. >> versus drinking fro contamin. >> reporter: there are 4-h classes all over including here in san bruno. 9-year-old caroline has been a member of the san bruno south san francisco 4-h program for five years. thanks to 4-h she feels she'd have a shot at surviving in the woods, too. >> if you're ever lost and there's a bunch much herbs around you would know which ones to eat and which ones not to. they teach you how to survive certain stuff and, say there's a pwhat to do.lf, they teach you >> reporter: much of 4-h is about taking care of animals and garden, aimed at teaching kids life skills and critical thinking which is clearly what kept leah and carolina live. kate larson, abc7 news. >> those sisters are amazing. you can hear more of their northern california sister story on our website, abc7news.com.

>> a man from scotland who faces 24 rape charges faked his death in carmel. they are searching for ken gordon. his son reported gordon missing from a beach saying he disappeared when he went for a swim. search crews couldn't find anything. investigators, they grew suspicious. >> it appears as we stand here today, this person never went swimming, and he, in fact, may be using it as a ruse of sorts to try to avoid criminal prosecution to scotland. >> investigators say no one saw gordon go into the water, and his son's story began to fall apart. the teen could also face charges. >> want to get away to hawaii? it's getting cheaper now. southwest airlines just started selling tickets from oakland to honolulu, and within hours. the airline sold out of its introductory $49 one way fares. now other airlines are lowering their fares to match southwest's prices between california and hawaii. southwest also plans to fly to hawaii from snaz, sacramento and

san francisco. beautiful view of the bridge there. showers arrive tomorrow. storm intensifies wednesday morning and daylight saving time begins this weekend, so don't forget to set your clocks forward one hour. tomorrow it's a light level 1 system on our exclusive abc7 news storm impact scale. showers moderate in pockets. it will be breezy. hour by hour, as the commute begins at 5:00 it's dry. as we go into 7:00 a.m. and wet weather develops, it goes to 8:30. taking the kids to school it will be slow going. the showers do move to the north between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., that's when we'll get a break for the rest of us until the evening hours until we see light to moderate showers developing again. that theme carries rightn thugh tomorrow night. tomorrow morning temperatures 40s if you're going to be out and about. make sure you have the umbrella with you. for the afternoon hang onto it. temperatures in the 50s and 60s except for lake port 49 degrees. the showers will be confined to

the north bay. it's a level 3 storm for your wednesday morning. heavy rain, gusts to 45 miles an hour. minor flooding is expected for those small creeks and streams, so keep an eye on them especially if you live or work near a small stream. isolated thunder chance is there as well. hour by hour we go, midnight wednesday going into 4:00 a.m. is when we start to see that rainfall intensifying. reds indicating potential for thunderstorm or two. 5:30 wednesday. this is going to be a tough commute. right now the models want to keep the heaviest of the rain during that commute time. 7:00 a.m. moderate pockets to heavy pockets of rain. by noontime scattered in navy. we'll see brief downpours. by evening lightning up and very scattered in nature for the evening commute on wednesday. rainfall totals taking you through tomorrow through wns, basically half an inch to an inch of rain for many of you. ben lomond in the santa cruz mountains an inch and a half or higher. winter storm warning starts tomorrow afternoon. one to 4 feet expected, additional at a thousand.
