tornado. oh, my god. >> reporter: one with wind speeds 170 miles per hour carving a path of destruction 24 miles long. at least three children are dead including fourth grader taylor thornton. families had very little time to take cover. abc's david muir is on the scene. >> this tornado came in so quickly, it was so powerful, even for families who had safe places in parts of their home or places to run to if a tornado were to hit, it simply was not enough. >> reporter: beginning sunday afternoon, several dozen tornadoes ripped across four states. homes smashed to pieces. vehicles overturned. and the roof of this local bar ripped right off. >> the window of this front of the store building blew out on the hood of my truck, yeah, and it was scary. >> reporter: in ft. benning, georgia, people sheltering in place including this bowling alley. >> i thank the lord. you tell god thank you. >> reporter: one woman and her family huddled together in their bathtub.

>> that's when my husband asked me what was wrong, and i said, i think it's a tornado. >> just amazing images. the tornado in beauregard is the deadliest to hit in the past six years. now rescuers working with temperatures in the 20s. we'll have a closer look at the forecast in just minutes. turning to washington where president trump is accusing democrats of conducting a fishing expedition after they launched a sweeping investigation digging into everything from his administration to his business empire. house lawmakers demanded documents from dozens of people and entities linked to the president. abc's elizabeth hur joins us now with the details and, elizabeth, that includes from his sons and son-in-law. >> reporter: absolutely, janai. good morning to you. and democrats say they are asking for documents and notes and even phone conversations. they say they're just doing their job. the pridcaitrament. overnight the white house blasting democrats calling their latest investigation into allegations of corruption, obstruction and abuse of power a

disgraceful and abusive fishing expedition. white house press secretary sarah sanders writing in a statement, the democrats are not after the truth, they are after the president. >> mr. president, are you going to cooperate with mr. nadler? >> i cooperate all the time with everybody, and you know the beautiful thing, no collusion. it's all a hoax. >> reporter: but beyond the question of collusion, the house judiciary committee wants answers to everything from the firing of former fbi director james comey to the hush money payments to stormy daniels to the president's conversations with vladimir putin and if the trumps are profiting from the presidency. committee chairman jerry nadler on msnbc last night. >> our job is to protect the rule of law in this country. remember, we are talking about a situation where for two years the republican congress did no oversight on the administration. >> reporter: so democrats on the panel are nos om1 op organizations close to the

president including members of his family, sons don junior and eric and son-in-law jared kushner. some of trump's closest former aides and advisers like steve bannon, hope hicks and don mcgahn, former white house counsel, his current campaign manager brad parscale and the trump organization's chief financial officer allen weisselberg. they have two weeks to comply. and if they don't, democrats say they will issue subpoenas and we've learned some of the people on that list have already started handing over some of those documents, janai. >> a lot to look for as they launch those investigations. thank you. for the first time hillary clinton is definitively ruling out a 2020 run for the white house. in her first tv interview since the midterm elections, clinton tells news 12 westchester that she will continue to stand up for what she believes in but she made it clear that there are no plans to join the crowded field of democratic presidential hopefuls. >> i'm not running, but i'm going to keep working and speaking and standing up for what i believe.

i'm not going anywhere. what's at stake in our country, the kinds of things that are haenght now are deeply troubling to me. >> clinton is taking an active role working with democratic candidates. she says she's already met with some of them privately and advised them not to take anything for granted. ben carson says he intends to step down as housing and urban development secretary after president trump's first term. carson, the only black member of the president's cabinet, told news max tv that he's interested in returning to the private sector saying he could have as much or more influence. police in california arrested more than 80 people overnight amid protests over the the shooting of stephon clark. demonstrators marched through east sacramento demanding officers who killed clark be charged. after nearly three hours of protesting, police arrested everyone who refused to leave. police shot and killed clark last year after he was suspected of vandalizing cars. over the weekend prosecutors said the officers wouldn't be charged because it appeared

a driver experienced a very dangerous surprise on a boston highway. snow and ice, you see right there, fell off an overpass near logan airport and cracked his windshield. it's believed a snowplow pushed the snow off the overpass. the massachusetts port authority is investigating now. the driver was not hurt. turning now to a possible medical breakthrough. scientists believe a patient has been effectively cured of hiv. the patient is remaining anonymous, but his case is similar to one more than a decade ago. this morning, a possible breakthrough in the fight against aids. doctors say for only the second

time an hiv positive person is now showing no trace of the virus. it comes 12 years after american timothy brown known as the berlin patient became the first known adult to be cured. both patients underwent stem cell transplants from donors who carried a rare genetic mutation that made them resistant to hiv. doctors say the second successful case shows that brown was not an anomaly. >> we now have reason to believe that the berlin patient was not a one-off case meaning it is possible to nearly or maybe even completely eliminate hiv from the body of an infected person. >> reporter: the patient in this most recent case known as london patient received the bone marrow transplant three years ago and stopped taking medication 18 months ago. while doctors say it's too early to say he's cured, highly sensitive tests are unable to measure any amounts of hiv in his body. experts warned these treatments will likely not cure all hiv patients. the procedure is expensive and risky and finding a match with that genetic mutation is difficult.

>> we're certainly optimistic that the london patient is cured but because we have only one case of confirmed cure so far, amfar scientists are working on not only how to cure hiv but how to confirm that hiv is cured. >> and we expect to learn more about the patient and the procedure at a conference in seattle later today. volvo will be taking steps to control one of the most dangerous things in a car, the driver. the swedish automaker plans to cap the top speeds of its new models at 112 miles an hour and says too many people are seriously injured or killed because of excessive speed. the highest speed limit in the u.s. is 85. but the german autobahn has no speed limit. and hyundai is getting rid of car keys. the automaker has introduced a digital key that lets you unlock and start your car with a smartphone. the system can work with up to four different phones. one goal behind the idea is reducing crime. experts say drivers leaving key fobs in their vehicles has led to an increase in auto thefts.

hollyfield live in novato on highway 37. amy. >> hi, reggie, westbound 37 is an area officials will be watching. it was shut down during the last couple of storms. this last one they had to pump thousands of gallons of water off the roadway so they will be keeping a close eye on this area. also up in geurneville, the people who live there are busy. they are cleaning up from the flooding that happened last week that they experienced when the russian river flooded. that caused an estimated $155 million worth of damages. as they clean up this aftermath, they are not looking forward to more wet weather. >> try to beat the rain. >> we are. i don't want to do this in the rain, you know. i think a lot of us feel that way. >> we are fully prepared. our emergency operations center is still staffed. we've got road crews on the road, lots of deputies and we're ready to face any
