prulss -- pulses of lightning were reported. tsa officers confiscate a variety of items at the airport on a daily basis, but this may be a first. a military rocket propelled grenade launcher was found. tsa stopped a florida man in lehigh valley international airport in pennsylvania after his checked bag triggered an alarm. tsa officers found unassembled parts of a grenade launcher and grenade packed inside. they say it was a replica, but still that can't be brought on to a plane. the tsa officers took the items and the man went on to catch his flight to orlando. >> i thought you could bring anything, as long as you check it, right? >> it's not over 3 ounces. >> right. a nasa jet had trouble getting off the ground. >> it left the field in houston. nobody was hurt. the plane was about to take its takeoff roll when it lost control of its front wheels and veered off. nasa officials are still investigating. a vaccination debate is

this morning on "world news now," sitting on edge. >> new protests over the california attorney's decision not to charge officers who shot and killed stephon clark, an unarmed black man. the investigation is not over. a round of heavy rain is hitting the west coast. with it, the threat of flooding in california. plus, the east is facing a bitter blast of cold stretching into florida. how low will the temps go? accuweather as the forecast. cruise ship chaos. people have been taken to the hospital after this happened. whipping winds rocked the ship. people and furniture flying across the floor. passengers thought they were iofficial one blockbuster left in this whole wide world. the once booming rental store has one location standing. we'll show you where.

it's wednesday, march 6th. announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we have been laughing about funny memories about blockbuster. >> yeah. i had a crusty old card in my wallet until a couple years ago. i had no clue when the last time i used that thing. >> you got rid of it even though -- >> because i was using streaming services and everything else. we'll get to that in a moment. we begin with a tense night in california's capitol city. >> angry residents voiced their concerns with police. it got so heated, it almost had to be recessed for a second time. this stems from the controversial, deadly shooting of an unarmed black man, stephon clark. >> the state attorney general announced no charges will be filed against the officers involved. they will investigate to see if the two officers violated clark's civil rights.

as the city remains on edge, will carr has the latest from there. >> reporter: new protests after a second investigation cleared the police officers who shot and killed stephon clark. >> our investigation has completed. no criminal charges against the officers can be sustained. >> reporter: that decision by california's attorney general comes three days after deciding not to charge the officers in this controversial shooting caught on camera. >> drop your gun! [ gunfire ] >> reporter: almost a year after two police officers shot killed clark, a black man which had been breaking windows, but was unarmed, tension is boiling. >> like an animal. >> reporter: police arrested 84 people in sacramento and detained at least one journalist. the response sparking criticism from the mayor. >> our thanks to will.

turning to the weather. the bitter cold that's been gripping the midwest stretches to florida. >> it feels like negative one in chicago. in new york, a balmy 17. in miami, an overnight low of 57, ten degrees below normal. another system is hitting california. heavy rain and snow in the mountains. flooding and mudslides are in much of the state. >> let's get the from accuweather's paul williams. good morning, paul. >> good morning. a crazy kind of storm for the west. first of all, with the rain concerns for flash flooding, we could get as much as six inches of rain. on top of that, flash flooding, urban flooding. on top of that, 2-4 feet of snow, that's right, i said feet, not inches. in the northwest, a mix of freezing rain, snow and rain throughout the northwest corner of the country. temperatures still 15-25 degrees below where they should be for the north central part of the

country. we are in the mix of that. then, we are watching out for melting snow showers in rapid city, omaha, minneapolis, 3-6 inches in some areas. for the northeast, another round of cold weather with snow squalls pushing across the great lakes region because of lake-effect snow. in the deep south, it is quite chilly. a high pressure system in place for us and allows the temperatures to drop 10-20 degrees below the norm for this time of year. kenneth, janai? >> it is winter. thank you, paul. now to washington and the showdown between president trump and the house democrats as allegations surface about his daughter's security clearance. >> sources tell cnn they pressured his chief of staff to grant ivanka trump security clearance despite their objections. that report comes as the white house is refusing to give congress information kushner's security clearance staging for a possible subpoena fight. >> democrats demand documents related to the president's life, he's calling them stone cold

crazy. here is abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: calling the request overly intrusive, the white house declined to give democrats any information on whether president trump, against the recommendation of intelligence officials ordered his son-in-law, jared kushner be granted top security clearance. when we asked the president, no answer. instead, he lashed out at democrats sweeping allegations of corruption to abuse of power. sir your response to the democrats calling for a criminal investigation into jared kushner's security clearance? >> it's a disgrace. it's a disgrace to our country. people understand when they look at it, they see presidential harassment. that's okay. >> reporter: the house judiciary committee demanding documents from 81 people close to the president, including don jr. and eric. kushner and former aides, like hope hicks and steve bannon. they want to know about everything from the president's

one-on-one meeting with vladimir putin to the trump tower meeting with the russian lawyer and whether president trump and his family are profiting from the presidency. the white house, furious. democrats undaunted. >> there has to be a check on the executive. we have to protect the rule of law. that's what we are doing here. >> reporter: the ball is back on democrats court on capitol hill. they are gearing up to subpoena the white house for information on jared kushner's security clearance. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> thanks to cecilia. president trump will go to alabama friday to see the damage caused by tornadoes. he's also approved a federal disaster declaration for the area. more than two dozen tornadoes touched down sunday in four states, alabama, georgia, florida and south carolina. alabama saw six of them, including a monster ef-4. >> it was on the ground for an hour and 17 minutes and traveled almost 70 miles.

at least 23 people are known dead, eight still missing. dozens of people are homeless. everyone who is able is helping with the recovery efforts. local officials say it will take months to rebuild their communities. federal investigators say the crew of an amazon cargo jet lost control before crashing near houston. the boeing was planning to land at bush airport. all three people on board were killed. ntsb cautions this is a preliminary finding. the audio from the cockpit voice recorder is hard to understand. what investigators have been able to understand indicates a loss of control. the agency doesn't say why they have lost control. raising has been suspended indefinitely at a famous horse track in los angeles. city thoroughbreds died at santa anita since christmas. the most recent yesterday, during training. two of the biggest events are scheduled for saturday, including a preliminary for the kentucky derby. wider than normal track

frantic moments on a fire outside houston. a woman was stuck inside that burning home. deputy roberto martinez had to run to a number of windows to find her. he had to smash a window and push aside a chest of drawers and carry a woman to safety. he did all that of carrying 30 pounds of safety gear. a reminder of how important first responders are. turning to the frightening moments at sea for passengers aboard a cruise liner that was rocked by powerful wind gusts. >> at least eight passengers were taken to hospitals in florida once the ship made it to port. here is abc's dania bacchus.

>> reporter: panic and chaos terrifying passengers onboard a norwegian cruise ship. >> i thought we were going down. i thought at that point, this is it. felt like the boat was turning over. >> reporter: massive wind gusts sent the ship tipping 45 degrees by some accounts. >> it was a pretty steep incline to this boat. it was literally like we were almost walking up an incredibly steep hill to get to the center of the boat. >> reporter: tables sent flying across the floor. the sounds of glass crashing off of shelves as passengers held on to whatever they could. >> they have an art gallery. there was art destroyed everywhere. there was glass everywhere. there was a lot of damage. >> reporter: the norwegian "escape" cruise left new york city on sunday as the storm was hitting the east coast. >> we all just went flying down. >> reporter: winds reaching the equivalent of a category 3 hurricane gust. up to 115 miles per hour.

>> he opened our door to the balcony and just saw a wave coming at us, and he closed it and said we got to get out of here. >> reporter: several passengers and crew members injured, some carried off by a stretcher. ambulances were waiting as the ship arrived in port canaveral, florida. at least eight people were sent to the hospital. >> it was just shear panic. people running around, screaming, and blood coming down peoples' faces and just -- it was truly like a scene out of the "titanic" movie. it was so scary. >> reporter: danya bacchus, abc news, los angeles. >> all passengers who were hospitalized have since been released. there was no damage to the ship and it's scheduled to continue to its final destination, the bahamas. if i was on that cruise, i don't know if i focus on getting to the bahamas at that point. >> i don't. you know, for the people who were sent to the hospital, where the injuries weren't that bad, do they get back on the ship? >> can they make a request not to get back on?

>> that was a scheduled stop. it's just incredible. you see the images of going back and forth and people were traumatized on the ship. >> really just the latest case of things going wrong on a cruise ship. school officials in connecticut are keeping a close eye on an intruder seen near an elementary school. >> it was a bear taking a nap in a tree where kids walk to school. since it was not bothering anybody, they just decided to leave it alone but suggests kids take a different route to school. >> connecticut has thriving black bear population. they are generally less aggressive than grizzly bears and excellent tree climbers. black bears live near people while grizzlies stay away from us. look. there you go, the difference. >> they are so cute, though. you want to walk-up and say hi. >> why isn't the black bear smiling? >> if you come across a grizzly, use pepper spray but don't run and fall to the ground and curl into a fetal position.

we will be on the lookout there. as we mention, it's colder than usual in the deep south overnight. >> a freeze warning in effect in beauregard, alabama. that small town was devastated by a tornado outbreak on sunday. at least 23 people were killed there and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed. >> officials say it will be months before the area recovers. abc's steve osunsami has more. >> reporter: the sheriff of lee county, alabama, says they're still looking for half a dozen people who they hope are with friends or family. what's left of this home belongs to a state trooper that was hospitalized and at one point was in the icu. you can see it from the sky, all of the people who were killed here, all 23 came from this community. in a one square mile area of heart ache and destruction. >> oh, dude, that's a big tornado. >> reporter: the deadly tornado that tore the heart out of alabama was on the ground for more than 68 miles and made carroll dean a widow. >> our son found him. he was done gone before we got

alabama. >> thanks to steve down there. across the world, north korea appears to be rebuilding a long range missile testing site that had been dormant since last summer. experts say satellite images show that key structures were quickly reassembled. they believe the work began just before or shortly after the summit in hanoi between president trump and kim jong-un. the president said kim promised not to resume the nuclear missile tests. british police are investigating three packages containing explosives found at transportation hubs. the three devices were mailed to offices for two london airports and a train station. one of the packages was opened and caught fire but there were no injuries. police say they are, quote, keeping an open mind about the motive. two of the packages had republic of ireland stamps. former white house attorney, ty cobb is defending special counsel robert mueller and the russia investigation. he told abc news he doesn't believe mueller's report will harm the president politically, but disagreed with the
